Mushtaq Ahmed will prepare England well against India, feels Wasim Akram

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 10:02 AM PST

Legendary seamer Wasim Akram feels the presence of former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as a spin bowling coach of England will boost the team and prepare them better to exploit the Indian conditions during the four-Test series starting in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

“The presence of Mushtaq Ahmed will stand England in good stead. Mushy has been with the English team for the last six years and the former Pakistan leg-spinner has built a good bowling unit,” Akram told ESPN-STAR.com.

“He has not only been a mentor to the English spinners but has also taught the seamers the nuances of reverse spin, which will be very handy on Indian pitches.

“So Duncan Fletcher and Mahendra Singh Dhoni will have to chalk out a strategy to counter the reverse swing which comes into effect just after 10 or 15 overs with the SG ball,” he added.

The former Pakistan skipper said England are a formidable side as they have a good bowling and batting attack.

“After a long time this England team looks a formidable lot. So any predication that India will wipe them out 4-nil is being a little overambitious. While I am not willing to predict a scoreline, England will be a difficult team to beat and the visitors have already showed their intentions in the warm-up games in Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

“England have a talented middle-order with Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott being the mainstay. And a quality spinner like Graeme Swann and a hard-working seamer like James Anderson give them the balance they need on Indian wickets,” Akram said.

The 46-year-old former cricketer also feels in the absence of veterans like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, who retired a few months ago, the onus will be on Virat Kohli and comeback man Yuvraj Singh to steer the batting.

MS Dhoni rules out playing three spinner in 1st Test against England

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 05:30 AM PST

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday virtually ruled out the possibility of his side playing with three front-line spinners in the first Test against England on a dry Sardar Patel Stadium wicket on Thursday.

This would mean that senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, recalled to the side after more than one year in the wilderness, will be left out of the playing eleven with R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha getting the nod.

“Maybe, if we get a wicket like the one at Kanpur against South Africa (in 2008), we will go in with four spinners. What we need to see is that if we get a wicket like that the fast bowlers also get a bit of reverse swing. It’s always advisable to have a bowling attack to have people (available) for different scenarios,” said Dhoni at the customary pre-match media conference.

Dhoni also informed that speedster Ishant Sharma will not play in first Test as he is yet to recover while all others, including Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav who did not practice on Wednesday with the rest of the team, were available for selection.

“Ishant has got viral and not recovered fully. All others are available,” said Dhoni.

On Ashok Dinda, called up as back-up for Sharma, Dhoni said it was just an extra precaution that the team has taken.

“He is just a back up. If someone breaks down in the night or tomorrow morning then he comes into the picture,” said the India wicketkeeper.

Explaining the absence of Zaheer and Yadav from practice on Wednesday, Dhoni said it was as per the team’s plans as they wanted to give the two pace bowlers some rest after the long practice sessions over the last few days in Mumbai and here.

“That’s our plan. We had longish sessions in Mumbai when we were there (from November 9-11) and over the last two days here. (These were) long sessions for them. We said it would be good to give them rest (today),” he said.

Dhoni refused to be drawn into a debate on whether or not it was a revenge series for the team for the 4-0 thrashing it had received from England last year in the latter’s backyard.

“I know for a fact that when we go to the field there will be a red ball, two teams that will play. You can name it whatever you want. That does not change the fact that from tomorrow we will go in and play Test cricket,” he said.

Dhoni ruled out breaking up of the opening partnership of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag despite the Delhi pair’s indifferent form in the previous home rubber against New Zealand and the earlier series in Australia.

“Gautam (Gambhir) and Viru pa (Sehwag) will open the innings,” he said, to end any speculation on the issue.

He also praised the complementary roles played by his two frontline spin bowlers R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha.

“They (Ashwin and Ojha) understand each other really well, something that’s very important. Ojha is someone who can keep it tight at one end and Ashwin will always be a more aggressive bowler, someone who has got plenty of variations and loves to use those. One of the important roles of Ojha is to keep it tight while Ashwin can attack from the other end.

“We have seen innings where Ojha got breakthrough while Ashwin did a bit of containing job. Both of them are able to get wickets for us. The best part is, if there is something for them they make sure they come into the game,” he said.

On the role of Harbhajan, Dhoni said the feisty Punjab off-spinner brings in his vast experience from which the other two younger spinners could benefit.

“If you see the top 4-5 spinners, Bhajji definitely features there. The good thing is he was out of the side and is now part of this series which means he can share his experience with some of these youngsters,” said Dhoni.

“Ojha has played with him (Harbhajan) in some matches. He can share things with Ashwin because Ashwin is slightly different to him. I feel he has got a big amount of contribution to make in the coming series. Of course he will work a lot with the team,” he said.

Dhoni praised the fighter in Yuvraj Singh — on and off the field — and said the left-handed batsman has already slipped back into Test cricket after a long gap.

“He looks in good shape. It takes a lot of fitness to score a double hundred; just hoping that he does not have to field for two days. There is no need for the car which is capable of a long haul to be driven the full distance. Our effort will be to make the route shorter.

“He’s an aggressive character. He’s someone who really wants to perform at the top level. The best thing for us is he bats at number five or six and his left-arm spin. It’s a very important role for us as we don’t have a genuine all-rounder and play with four bowlers. His contribution will be very important. He can be quite intimidating the way he bats. He is someone who can really dominate,” Dhoni said.

“Good thing is he’s not starting (international career) from this tour. He was part of the T20 side also. He has got a fair amount of exposure Good thing is his fight, you all know about his fight (against rare germ cell cancer). He’s a strong character. I think he will be up and ready for it.”

He also predicted an entertaining contest between Yuvraj and his bunny, recalled England batsman Kevin Pietersen who calls the Indian pie-chucker for his part-time left-arm spin bowling.

“I never doubted that he (Pietersen) would be part of the squad when the English team comes to India whatever was happening around at that point of time. Of course he is a great batsman who loves to play his shots. You will enjoy the contest between him and the pie-chucker,” he said.

Though Dhoni was not willing to openly say that the wicket at the Motera stadium would crumble at some stage, Dhoni expected it to help the spinners a bit.

“It looks like a good wicket though I am not a great reader of wickets. It may slow down and spinners would get a bit of assistance. (There) may be a bit of reverse swing for the fast bowlers. I will see how it behaves. Definitely it looks to be on the drier side,” Dhoni said.

“I feel they have changed the soil from the last time we have played here. They have used a bit more of clay into the preparation of the wicket. Definitely I feel it will turn. But will have to see the pace of the wicket,” he explained.

Dhoni said the Indian team would never disrespect England though his side are playing at home.

“What is important is you need to respect the opposition. You play 60 to 70 per cent of your cricket in your own country and you are supposed to be good there. Once you go to a different part of the world it’s a fresh challenge for you. Every country feels the same. It’s no different for England.

“When we go out we also face big challenges. That’s why I feel each and every tour is very special. It’s the same for the English side,” Dhoni remarked.

He said it was not under his instruction that England were denied practice in their three-warm-up games against some top Indian spinners, barring a few overs from Amit Mishra in the last game here.

“That’s an administrative decision about which I cannot say. No instructions went sent from my side,” he said.

On the call from retired great Rahul Dravid to give a more hands-on role to coach Duncan Fletcher in selection matters, Dhoni said the coach was already a part of the selection process (though without a vote).

“We (captain and coach) are part of selection process. It’s a new selection committee. We had a very good first meeting. Let’s see how it goes. As of now we are definitely a big part (of the committee),” Dhoni said.

Bangladesh struggle after Chanderpaul slams double ton: Day 2, 1st Test

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 04:57 AM PST

Bangladesh struggled in reply to a huge West Indian total and faced the prospects of following on after Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit a brilliant double century in the first Test here on Wednesday.

Scorecard | Day 2 Highlights 1st Test

The hosts were 164-3 at close on the second day, still needing 164 to avoid follow-on, after West Indies declared their first innings close on a mammoth 527-4 at tea with Chanderpaul equalling his best Test score of 203 not out.

Both Chanderpaul and Denesh Ramdin, who remained unbeaten on 126, piled on the pressure for a clueless home team as they put on 296 for the unbroken fifth wicket stand — a new record in all Bangladesh-West Indies Tests.

When Bangladesh batted, paceman Ravi Rampaul struck as early as in the fifth over when he had Junaid Siddique caught for seven and had Shahriar Nafees (31) caught behind in his seventh.

In between Tamim Iqbal played a fiery 71-ball 72 with the help of ten boundaries and two sixes before he became the third wicket to fall, caught off a miscued drive off paceman Darren Sammy.

Iqbal hit four boundaries off one Tino Best over and then smashed spinner Sunil Narine twice over the boundary, completing his fifty with the first six off just 38 balls.

At close Naeem Islam (27) and Shakib Al Hasan (16) were at the crease on a day dominated by Chanderpaul after the West Indies resumed at 361-4.

The 38-year-old left-hander batted with composure to equal his highest Test score of 203 not out made against South Africa at Georgetown in 2005.

Chanderpaul drove spinner Sohag Gazi towards point for two to complete his double ton. He took his helmet off to acknowledge the cheers from a small crowd and team-mates before bending down to kiss the ground.

In all he batted for 457 minutes, faced 372 balls and hit 22 fours.

Chanderpaul’s stand with Ramdin beat the previous best of 262, incidentally involving him and Ramnaresh Sarwan at Kingston eight years ago.

Ramdin, 52 overnight, looked unperturbed in the company of his illustrious partner, reaching his century with a boundary and a flick for two off spinner Shakib Al Hasan.

He hit 11 boundaries and a six.

Debutant Gazi was the pick of bowlers with 3-145. Paceman Shahdat Hossain took the other wicket.

The second and final Test will be played in Khulna from November 21.

Chris Gayle first player to hit six of first ball in test cricket

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 04:15 AM PST

Flamboyant West Indies opener Chris Gayle became the first player to hit a six from the first ball of a test match when he launched his big-hit against Bangladesh on Tuesday, the International Cricket Council said.

Gayle smashed debutant Sohag Gazi over long-on, taking 18 from the first over but the 21-year-old off-spinner took revenge by having the opener caught for 24.

West Indies declared their first inning at 527-4 during the second day of the first test.

The first officially recognised test match commenced on March 15, 1877 and was contested by England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

India start off the season with the test series against England where they will be looking to avenge the 0-4 humiliating loss in England last year. India will be playing at home after horrific last year and they will be looking to get the most out the conditions. India started off with a win against the New Zealand when India went without Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. India series against England will be opportunity for the youngsters to prove themselves and show their abilities.

For England, the series is a tough task ahead of them. England haven’t been able to win the series in India since 1984 and this will be their test to change the stats. England have been performing and achieved the no. 1 test when they beat India last year. They have chance to get back to the no. 1 spot in the series but for that England need to tackle the spin bowling attack. England batsman aren’t able to play well against spin but can they do well this time?

Key Players:

For India, all eyes will be on senior players Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. This might be the last series for Tendulkar against India and expectations are high from him. Playing for Ranji Trophy have helped Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag to get back in form but can they deliver against England? Besides the batsman, spinners have a lot on their shoulders. Pragyan Ojha, R Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh will be tested out against England. Harbhajan Singh was left out of team for year before he makes a comeback in the T20 world cup. He has performed well in the Ranji Trophy but a lot will depend on how he tackles England batsman. Spinners will be the key for India success against India.

For England, Kevin Pietersen returns have definitely boosted the team. He has been playing in India in IPL and knows the conditions well here now. He got a lot of experience and is a better player of spin alongwith Ian Bell. Pietersen definitely is the key player for England a lot will depend on him the whole series. England have played well in the three warm-up games and the players got ample time to adapt to the conditions as well. Besides batting, another challenge for England will be their fast bowlers to make an impact on Indian tracks.

Trivia

  • James Anderson has dismissed Sachin Tendulkar seven times in 10 Tests, at an average of 1.42 matches per dismissal.
  • MS Dhoni has lost only one Test out of 20 in which he has captained India on home soil. The only defeat came against South Africa at Nagpur in 2009-10.
  • England have played more Tests in India than any other visiting side – 51. West Indies (43) and Australia (42) come next.
  • On 45 occasions – out of 48 – England have batted first after winning the toss. India have done so on 45 out of 55 occasions.

India vs England: Steven Finn ruled out of 1st Test against India

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 02:30 AM PST

England skipper, Alastair Cook confirmed today that Steven Finn has been ruled out of the 1st test due to thigh strain. Finn didn’t attend the tuesday practice, so it was an expected. Cook confirmed the media in a press conference held today.

“Steven will not be available for tomorrow’s Test”, said Cook. “It would be too big a risk.” England are already playing a gamble on Stuart Broad’s fitness since he is suffering from a bruised heel. Though, it is not yet confirmed that who will replace Finn, but most likely Tim Bresnan will feature in the first XI in place of Steve Finn.

England still have other options to go in with. Graeme Swann is back from home to join the team.

“Two long-haul flights in the space of five days is not ideal preparation for the opening match of a huge series for England – but some things are more important than cricket,” said Swann. Swann have missed several days of practice but he is ready for the challenge.

Along with him England have an option of playing Graham Onions and Monty Panesar. England is really pumped up and it will be a test of their batting in the Indian conditions. They haven’t been able to put up a good show in India till now and will be looking to change the things on this outing.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul slams double century as West Indies declare for 527-4 against Bangladesh

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 01:40 AM PST

Shivnarine Chanderpaul slammed a brilliant double hundred and Denesh Ramdin was unbeaten on 126, as the West Indies declared their first innings at 527 for four at tea, on the second day of the first Test.

Chanderpaul faced 372 balls and cracked 22 boundaries to score 203 not out, to put West Indies in a commanding position.

Ramdin remained not out on 126, which came from 236 deliveries, hitting 11 boundaries and a six.

Chanderpaul and Ramdin added 296 runs for the fifth wicket.

Earlier at lunch, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Denesh Ramdin frustrated Bangladesh as they took the West Indies to an imposing score of 437-4.

Resuming at 361-4, the pair added 76 runs in the morning session as Bangladesh’s attack failed to make a breakthrough on a lifeless pitch at the Shere Bangla stadium.

Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 156 and Ramdin, on 84, was approaching his third Test century as the pair extended their fifth wicket partnership to 206.

Debutant off-spinner Sohag Gazi, who took three wickets on the first day, opened the bowling and kept a tight line and length. He forced an edge off Chanderpaul’s bat which fell short of first slip and went for two runs.

Brief Scores: West Indies 527 for 4 dec (Shivnarine Chanderpaul 203*, Denesh Ramdin 126*, Kieran Powell 117, Denesh Ramdin 84; Sohag Gazi 3 for 145) vs Bangladesh

India will go flat out to maintain dominance at home: MS Dhoni

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 01:30 AM PST

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has made it clear that his side will be ‘going flat out' to maintain their domination at home, and win the upcoming Test series against England.

"The forthcoming series promises to be a cracker. We will be going flat out to maintain our dominance at home, while England will be looking to erase the memories of their recent travails in UAE. England have some quality players, and so have we," Dhoni said.

India, who were thrashed by England last year 4-0, will be eyeing for revenge against the tourists who are known to be vulnerable against spin, but the Indian captain is not in the opinion that spinners will play a big role.

Dhoni wrote in his column for bcci.tv, "A lot of people have said a lot of things in the lead-up to the series, one of them being a theory of sorts that our spinners will be the difference between the two sides. I believe that is an unfair comment."

"Make no mistake, the likes of Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar are as capable of exploiting conducive conditions, as our spinners. The team that wins more sessions will win the series," he wrote.

Dhoni admitted that India had a tough time in England in 2011.

"We had a tough time in England last year. We were plagued by injury issues, and we did not bat, bowl and field well enough. England were outstanding in all three departments, and they deserved to win the series," he added.

Dhoni said the absence of star cricketer Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman cannot be fulfilled, but he urged young Indian cricketers to come good against a formidable opponent.

"The series will also provide some youngsters an opportunity to establish themselves in the national squad, after the recent retirements of two of our greatest cricketers. Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman are irreplaceable. I wish most of the youngsters, if not all, make these opportunities count," he wrote.

"They have the talent, and it is now time to display it, against one of the best cricket teams in the world. There is no bigger high in cricket than success against a formidable opponent. Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara, to name just two players, have proved that they belong to the highest level of the sport, and one hopes that others take a cue from them," Dhoni expressed.

“We will be going into the series, fully aware that millions will be watching us and praying for our success. We have a lot to play for, and will do our best to make our supporters smile,” the Indian captain concluded.

The first of the four-match Test series begins on November 15, at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad.

Kevin Pietersen will play key role for England against India: Graeme Swann

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 12:44 AM PST

Graeme Swann has backed the “polarising” figure of Kevin Pietersen to have a major role in what he believes can be a successful England Test side in India.

Star batsman Pietersen is set to make his return to the Test arena in Ahmedabad on Thursday after missing the climax of England’s home series against his native South Africa having been dropped for sending “provocative texts” to Proteas players.

But with then England captain Andrew Strauss having since retired, Pietersen has been welcomed back into a top-order that would otherwise be short on experience not to mention talent.

Pietersen, in an England team now captained by Alastair Cook, showed his class with a typically aggressive 110 against Haryana in the tourists’ final warm-up match.

And Swann said there was no reason why the team, who lost their world number one ranking to South Africa in England earlier this year, would struggle to be united on the field as they go in search of a first Test series win in India since 1984/85.

“Of course we can be a unit again,” Swann told online magazine Wisden EXTRA.

“You don’t have to like everyone you play with for the team to do well. But once you turn up, you have to pull together and be professional about things.

“I don’t think I’ve played in many teams in which everyone gets on with everybody else.

“That is just the way of the world. It is like in business: you don’t always choose who you work with, you just get along. The bottom line is that the dressing-room is fine.”

Swann added: “Pietersen is always going to be a fairly polarising character because of the way he is. But there is no reason why he cannot be part of a very successful England team, and be a very successful part of that team.”

Meanwhile, with Indian pitches known for being spin-friendly surfaces, Swann is set to play a key role with the ball having recently returned to India after a brief break from the tour in order to spend time with his family after his daughter, who is only a few weeks old, was taken ill.

And the Nottinghamshire bowler, on the brink of becoming England’s most successful Test off-spinner, is relishing his chance to shine.

“My motivation has never changed,” said the 33-year-old, a veteran of 46 Tests. “I love playing Test cricket. I love being involved in this team, being the guy that can influence a win.

“My motivation is to be winning games for England. I want to be man-of-the-match, the centre of attention. That’s what keeps driving me on.

“If I didn’t think we could win in India, I wouldn’t be going. The moment I considered that we couldn’t win somewhere would be the day I retired.”

Since making a stunning Test debut in Chennai in 2008, when he took the wickets of Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid in his first over, Swann has collected 192 Test wickets, leaving him one shy of equalling the record by an England off-spinner set by Jim Laker in the 1950s.

“Yes, when you get near a milestone or someone else’s personal record, comparisons are flattering,” Swann said. “But our records are only comparable on a piece of paper, because we played in different eras, and it would be arrogant to claim that you were as good as or better than those who went before you.

India vs England 2012: India aim to reverse the trend at Motera

Posted: 14 Nov 2012 12:05 AM PST

India have not won a single Test in seven years at Sardar Patel Stadium, venue of their series-opener against England and the hosts would aim to reverse the trend and gain early initiative against the tourists.

It was in December 2005 that India tasted their last Test win against Sri Lanka on this ground in Motera, which made its debut as a Test centre in November 1983 when the West Indies under Clive Lloyd visited the country against the Emerald Islanders.

India’s comprehensive 259-run victory against Sri Lanka was followed by a disastrous outing on a seaming track against the South African pace attack spearheaded by Dale Steyn that resulted in a humiliating innings and 90-run defeat for the home team in April 2008.

The hosts’ star-studded batting line-up comprising of Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, V V S Laxman and Sourav Ganguly were bowled out for a meagre 76 in 20 overs leading to many derisive remarks as the Twenty20 World Cup title had been won by India just the previous year and was to be followed by the Indian Premier League’s first edition.

Two more drawn results followed that defeat against the Proteas – Sri Lanka in November 2009 and New Zealand in November 2010. In the latter game, Chris Martin had rocked India with his seam-up bowling in the second innings.

In all, India have won only three out of 11 Tests played at this ground, including back-to-back wins in 1994 and 1996 over Sri Lanka and South Africa respectively. Incidentally, it was pacer Javagal Srinath who emerged hero on a wearing fifth day pitch and blew away the Proteas for 105 with 6 for 21.

Meanwhile, the track for the India-England game is an unknown entity as the entire centre square has been re-laid before the monsoon rains.

The relaying of the wicket has resulted in 20 per cent less clay content in the soil mix, according to Gujarat Cricket Association sources in the know-how of the pitch preparations.

The pitch is being watered but care is taken to see that it’s not in excess as the content of clay component in the mix has been brought down from 75 per cent earlier to round 55 per cent, the sources informed.

They also dismissed fears that the match may not last five days though the pitch looked bone-dry to the naked eye and appears to be loaded in favour of spin bowling. Only two 50-over practice games have been played to test the wicket after it had been relaid.

“It’s a five-day wicket, but ultimately the duration of any game depends on how the teams play on it. There would be some carry and movement in the initial stages,” the GCA sources maintained.

However, the general opinion is that the dry wicket will crumble at some stage of the game and produce a result.

India vs England Series: Ishant Sharma doubtful, Ashok Dinda called up

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 11:34 PM PST

Ishant Sharma has been rendered a doubtful starter for the opening Test against England as the lanky India pacer skipped the practice sessions on Tuesday. The Bengal pacer Ashok Dinda, who is in good form, has been called up as a stand-by.

BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale, when contacted, said there seems to be some “problem” with Sharma, but he did not know the details. “There is some problem, as I got a call from the team management. They are still ascertaining details whether he will be available to play (in the Test),” Jagdale said.

According to team sources, Sharma has picked up a viral infection, but it could not be verified from official sources.
