Ravichandran Ashwin fastest Indian bowler to record 50 wickets in test

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 10:05 AM PST

Ravichandran Ashwin has become the fastest India to record 50 wickets in Test matches as he overhauled the milestone in his ninth game. He achieved it when he dismissed the England opener Nick Compton on the second day of the first Test at Ahmedabad.

The previous record holder for India was Anil Kumble – who took 10 matches to complete the milestone. With this achievement, Ashwin is tied with the likes of Stuart MacGill, Colin Croft and Andy Roberts to name a few on the overall list.

Here is a list of the ten fastest bowlers to 50 Test wickets for India:

  1. Ravichandran Ashwin – 9 matches
  2. Anil Kumble – 10 matches
  3. Narendra Hirwani – 11 matches
  4. Harbhajan Singh – 11 matches
  5. Subhash Gupte – 12 matches
  6. Bhagwat Chandrasekar – 12 matches
  7. Erapalli Prasanna – 12 matches
  8. Venkatesh Prasad – 13 matches
  9. Pragyan Ojha – 13 matches
  10. Ghulam Ahmed – 14 matches

This list makes a very interesting reading as one would realise that it is dominated by spinners. Nine out of the ten are tweakers, while Venkatesh Prasad is the only fast-bowler in this list as he took 13 matches to pick 50 Test wickets.

Ashwin has been very prolific at home since his debut against the West Indies last year. In partnership with Pragyan Ojha, he has been a force to reckon with in Indian conditions and the touring teams would be wary of them.

Jonathan Trott breached the spirit of cricket, feels Sunil Gavaskar

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 09:48 AM PST

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at England’s Jonathan Trott, saying the player “breached the spirit of cricket” by refusing to acknowledge that he had not cleanly taken a catch on the opening day of the first Test.

Fielding at first slip on the first day, Virat Kohli offered a catch which Trott claimed to have taken cleanly but then the TV replays showed otherwise.

“It was quite clear that the spirit of cricket was breached. I think there should have been a sanction against Trott,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar recalled a similar incident that had taken place in the past, during a match between England and Pakistan.

“The way he claimed it, I believe that we have seen in the past when there was a Pakistani wicketkeeper who appealed against Ian Botham. That was a similar situation and the English media tore him (Pakistan player) apart.

“I don’t know what the English media has written now. I do believe if that particular thing needed a sanction (this should also),” he told a news channel on Friday.

Gavaskar further said: “If he (Trott) had said he didn’t know what had happened, it would have been a different situation. But he was actually accepting high-fives from the bowler, the fielders and that means he was quite sure that it was a catch.”

Post-tea, when India were at 259 for three, Kohli, who was on four, went for a cut shot off Graeme Swann’s bowling but edged the ball to Trott at slip.

The ball struck Trott’s forearm and he dived backward to complete the catch. He, however, dropped it on the turf but still appealed and forced the on-field umpires to refer the matter to third umpire Sudhir Asnani.

But TV replays clearly showed that the ball spilled out of his hand as he dived backward and his body covered the ball before he scooped it up and appealed.

Gavaskar was full of praise for Cheteshwar Pujara, who has slammed his maiden double century to put India in the driver’s seat at close on the second day.

“As long as he is performing, he is going to be an asset to the Indian team. He brings calmness to the middle-order. His temperament will tested when he goes out to bat at the fall of an early wicket when the bowler is fresh. But he has got all the ingredients to have a long career.”

You can’t compare Cheteshwar Pujara with Rahul Dravid: Kapil Dev

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST

Former India captain Kapil Dev heaped praises on double centurion Cheteshwar Pujara but said it was too early to say that the Indian team has found Rahul Dravid’s replacement in him.

“He has just started. He has shown great temperament but you cannot compare him with Rahul so early. Let him make his own position in the team and name for himself. It is unfair to put him under pressure and say he is the replacement of so and so,” said the 1983 World Cup winning captain.

“Rahul gave 15 years to cricket and then became what he is,” added Kapil.

Another former skipper, Ajay Jadeja, said he was impressed with Pujara’s hunger for runs.

“What stands out for me is someone who is not content. Pujara even after completing his hundred, worked hard to get to the double century. He is showing he wants to get better, and that’s a good sign,” said Jadeja.

Besides Pujara, Yuvraj Singh, playing his first Test since recovering from a rare germ cell cancer, was the other notable performer on the second day of the opening Test on Friday against England. He scored a fluent 74.

But Kapil felt that the talented left-hander should take care of his health first.

“He is one of the finest cricketers and he has a long way to go but he must look after his health first and then he can go on playing,” said Kapil.

Asked if Yuvraj can sustain this kind of form for long, Jadeja said it was not for anyone else to say or decide but for the player himself.

“Cricket is very simple… you play till you can sustain. You play as long as you are good enough and Yuvraj himself will say whether he is good enough to sustain for whatever number of years.

“Right now Yuvraj is making a statement and it is not important whosoever is saying what,” insisted Jadeja.

On the Ahmedabad pitch, which is tailormade for the Indians, Kapil said the goal is to win the Test.

“You must win a Test match and that is important. India must see what their biggest strength is and they should play to that.

“But in domestic cricket the wickets should improve. That must be monitored,” Kapil said on Friday.

Asked about Andhra Pradesh high court’s decision to uphold BCCI’s life ban imposed on Mohammad Azharuddin, Kapil said, “I am nobody to say anything on that. Law is law. But it would be good if he comes back and shares his cricketing knowledge with the youngsters.”

Preview: Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, 1st Test, Galle, 17-21 Nov 2012

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 07:30 AM PST

Sri Lanka are set to probe New Zealand’s defences against spin in a two-Test series starting in Galle on Saturday as they seek to extend their dominance over the tourists.

The traditionally spin-friendly Galle International Stadium is a happy hunting ground for the hosts, who have won five, drawn one and lost one of their last seven Tests there.

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath and off-spinner Suraj Randiv called the shots in Sri Lanka’s last two Test victories at the venue, when they shared 30 wickets against England and Pakistan this year.

Sri Lanka, fresh from their 3-0 one-day series win over the tourists, have also named a third specialist spinner, 19-year-old Tharindu Kaushal, in the squad along with Herath and Randiv.

New Zealand have already lost much of their bowling strength in the absence of match-winning left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, who was ruled out of the tour after failing to recover from an Achilles strain.

Off-spinner Jeetan Patel is the most experienced specialist slow bowler in the Kiwi squad with 47 wickets in 15 Tests, while leg-spinner Todd Astle has yet to make his Test debut.

Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene said his team were looking forward to the Test series.

“We haven’t played Test cricket for some time now and we’ll try to be as consistent as possible. We still need to improve but we’re working hard,” he said.

New Zealand need to raise their batting performance as they seek to avoid their fourth successive Test series defeat this year, having already lost to South Africa at home and then in the West Indies and India.

The turning ball caused them major problems on their tour of India in August-September. They failed to cope with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha to lose the series 2-0.

But the tourists will be pleased with the performance of their fast bowlers in the recent one-dayers, especially in the fifth and final match when they reduced Sri Lanka to 123-8 before rain marred hopes of a victory.

“We have made some improvements and we need to get better. We need to work on all three facets of the game,” New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor said after the match.

“We’ve got seven or eight guys coming over (for Tests).”

The return of batsmen Martin Guptill and Daniel Flynn, and pacer Doug Bracewell, who were not part of the one-day team, has bolstered New Zealand who will be keen to improve their Test record in Sri Lanka.

New Zealand have won only three of their 13 Tests in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka: Mahela Jayawardene (Capt.), Angelo Mathews, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Kumar Sangakkara, Thilan Samaraweera, Prasanna Jayawardene, Tharindu Kaushal, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Dinesh Chandimal, Nuwan Kulasekara, Chanaka Welegedara, Shaminda Eranga, Dhammika Prasad.

Cheteshwar Pujara, R Ashwin gave India control, Eng 41-3 at stumps Day 2

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 05:49 AM PST

Cheteshwar Pujara showed immense concentration and skill to notch up his maiden Test double century as India put themselves in the driver's seat in the first Test by posting a mammoth first innings total and then compounded England's misery with three early jolts here on Friday.

The 24-year-old Pujara scored an unbeaten 206 and batted for close to nine hours before the hosts declared the first innings at 521 for eight shortly after the tea break on the second day and then reduced the visitors to a precarious 41 for three at stumps.

Captain Alastair Cook (22) and Kevin Pietersen (6) were the two unbeaten batsmen at close with England still needing 281 runs to avoid the follow. Nick Compton (9), James Anderson (2) and Jonathan Trott (0) are the three batsmen back in the pavilion on a Sardar Patel track which has already started taking turn.

It was Pujara who hogged the limelight as he not only recorded his second Test century in his sixth match but showed his class with some glorious shots on both sides of the wicket.

The left-handed Yuvraj Singh, playing his first Test since recovering from a rare germ cell cancer, was the other notable performer with a fluent 74 while captain Mahendra Simgh Dhoni (5) and R Ashwin (23) and Zaheer Khan (7) could not hang around for long.

Off-spinner Graeme Swann was the pick of the English bowlers with figures of 51-8-144-5, recording his 14th five wicket haul in an innings.

Pujara became only the sixth Indian batsman to hit a double century against England. He joined the list of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Gundappa Viswanath, Vinod Kambli and Rahul Dravid.

Pujara batted for a marathon 513 minutes, faced 389 balls and struck 21 fours during his epic unbeaten knock which served as the foundation for India's monumental total.

Off-spinner R Ashwin, who opened the bowling, scalped two wickets and in the process became the fastest Indian to claim 50 Test wickets in his ninth Test, eclipsing Anil Kumble's record of achieving the feat in his tenth match.

Keiron Powell hits ton, late wickets give Bangladesh hopes on Day 4 of 1st Test

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 05:04 AM PST

Opener Kieran Powell smashed a century in each innings before Bangladesh captured late wickets to keep hopes of an unlikely result in the first Test in Dhaka on Friday.

Scorecard | Day 4 Highlights 1st Test

The 22-year-old right-handed batsman scored 110 for his second century of the match to anchor his team to 244-6 at close on the fourth day, leading by 215 runs and setting up an intriguing fifth and final day.

In the morning Bangladesh were dismissed for 556 runs in their first innings, taking a slender 29-run lead over the West Indies first knock of 527-4 declared.

Powell, who made 117 in the first innings, batted with resolve and authority and added 189 runs for the second wicket with Darren Bravo who made 76.

But left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Powell and Denesh Ramdin for five and debutant Sohag Gazi took two wickets to stop the West Indian run flow sparked by Powell and Bravo.

Their stand is a new record for the second wicket against Bangladesh, beating the previous stand of 87 was between Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan at Gros Islet in 2004.

Here Gayle failed again, scoring only 19 before falling to paceman Rubel Hossain.

Bangladesh could have dismissed Powell early but Junaid Siddique dropped a straight-forward catch off paceman Shahadat Hossain. Powell was only 17 then.

He took full advantage of the life and together with Bravo boosted the total to 124-1 at tea, pacing the innings well in the last session.

Powell hit Shakib for a towering six before reaching his hundred with three boundaries in one Rubel over. In all, he hit 12 boundaries off 197 balls.

Earlier, Nasir Hossain missed his maiden hundred by just four runs but still helped Bangladesh overhaul the West Indian total.

The 20-year-old Nasir, playing only his fifth Test, hit four sixes and six boundaries during his fiery 136-ball knock — improving on his previous best of 79 against Pakistan at the same venue last year.

Resuming at 455-6, Bangladesh were guided towards the West Indian total by a solid 121-run stand for the seventh wicket between Nasir and Mohammad Mahmudullah (62) before Sunil Narine took two quick wickets.

Sensing Bangladesh would fell short of the West Indian total, Nasir took the attack to himself by adding 61 for the ninth wicket with Shahadat Hossain (13) and during the stand also took his team into the lead.

Nasir hit two sixes off Veerasammy Permaul and one off Narine to enter 90s but was caught off a miscued lofted shot off paceman Tino Best.

Paceman Ravi Rampaul and Narine finished with three wickets apiece. The second and final Test will start in Khulna from November 21.

Ind vs Eng: Cheteshwar Pujara slams maiden double ton as India declares first innings at 521-8

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 03:15 AM PST

Cheteshwar Pujara reached his maiden Test double century in the second over after tea on the second day of the first Test against England at Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera in Ahmedabad on Friday.

Pujara achieved the landmark when he cut a James Anderson delivery to third man.

India lost their eighth wicket when Zaheer Khan edged a James Anderson delivery to Jonathan Trott at point.

R Ashwin (23) fell in the third over after tea when he edged a Kevin Pietersen delivery to keeper Matt Prior to take the catch.

Pujara and Ashwin took the Indian first innings to 502/6 at tea.

Graeme Swann registered his 14th five-wicket haul when he dismissed Indian captain MS Dhoni.

Swann hurled in a slow loopy off-spinner on the middle stump, Dhoni got down on one knee for a sweep across the line but failed to unfurl it well and it came off his gloves and rolled back onto the stumps.

This is second five-for on the trot for Swann against India.

The dismissal came after Cheteshwar Pujara reached 150 for the second time in his Test career.

This is the ninth time that Pujara has gone over 150 in first class cricket.

Pujara reached the milestone after Yuvraj Singh hit a full toss from Samit Patel straight into the hands of Graeme Swann at long-on.

Displaying excellent temperament on his Test comeback, Yuvraj hit 2 sixes and 6 fours in his 74-run knock.

Making England toil hard, Pujara and Yuvraj took the Indian first innings to 410/4 at lunch.

Playing his first Test after his comeback, Yuvraj Singh hit his 11th half-century.

This is Yuvraj’s fourth fifty against England.

Pujara reached his second Test century in the fourth over of the day.

Pujara reached the milestone by a flicking a Stuart Broad delivery to fine leg and achieved it with the help of 13 fours.

The day’s play started with Pujara and Yuvraj Singh resuming the Indian first innings.

India ended Day 1 at 323/4 with Graeme Swann bagging all the four wickets to fall on the day and the off-spinner also became the most successful England off-spinner with 196 wickets, surpassing Jim Laker (193).

India’s innings was built largely around Virender Sehwag’s 23rd Test hundred (117), Cheteshwar Pujara’s watchful, unbeaten 98 and Gautam Gambhir’s 45.

Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli were unfortunate to get out cheaply for 13 and 19 respectively.

Openers Sehwag and Gambhir gave India a sound start after India elected to bat first, putting on 134 — their first century stand since Centurion in 2010-2011.

This was also the duo’s 11th century partnership, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan’s 10 as openers. Both started cautiously, picking up singles and twos and pushing and punching the odd one to vacant areas.

But Sehwag soon shifted gears, and apart from the occasional troublesome delivery from Stuart Broad or James Anderson seemed in fine fettle.

Dimuth Karunaratne replaces injured Tillakaratne Dilshan for SL-NZ 1st Test

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 02:03 AM PST

Sri Lanka suffered a big blow with opener Tillakaratne Dilshan being ruled out of the first Test against New Zealand starting in Galle on Saturday as he is yet to recover from his back injury.

The same injury had kept the batsman out of the last two ODIs against the Kiwis also.

Dilshan’s unbeaten century in the third one-dayer helped Sri Lanka take a winning lead in the five-match and rain affected series.

Sri Lankan team manager Charith Senanayake said Dimuth Karunaratne would replace Dilshan in the squad and would open the innings with Taranga Paranavithana.

The 24-year-old left handed batsman Karunaratne has earlier represented Sri Lanka in two ODIs, both during Sri Lanka’s tour of England in 2011.

PPL will help PCB to revive international cricket in the country: Haroon Lorgat

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 12:40 AM PST

Former CEO of ICC Haroon Lorgat believes that the proposed Pakistan Premier League T20 event can be a big stepping stone for the return of international teams to Pakistan.

Speaking to the media at the Gaddafi stadium on Thursday, Lorgat felt the key to making the premier league a success was the participation of international players.

“I think it will be a big stepping stone if international players come to play in the league. That will give confidence to players that cricket is played and can be played in a secure venue there is no reason why they can’t convince their boards to tour as national teams,” Lorgat said.

Lorgat’s appearance at the PCB headquarters came as a surprise for the media as like in the case of the former England coach, Peter Moores on Wednesday, the board had made no prior announcements about the former ICC official’s visit.

After meeting with the PCB Chairman, Zaka Ashraf, chief operating officer, Subhan Ahmad, director-general cricket, Javed Miandad and other key officials to discuss the league, Lorgat told the media that he could see the PCB is determined to have it early next year.

“There is lot of planning and detail to be done. Lots of work to be done but I can see there is a lot of energy will and determination to get this league off the ground,” he said.

Lorgat stopped over in Lahore on way to Sri Lanka where the board has signed him on as a advisor and consultant.

Ashraf said that Lorgat had always been a great friend of Pakistan and it was a great day for Pakistan cricket that he had decided to stop in Lahore.

“He has come to Pakistan on our invitation to discuss matters of significance. These days our focus is on organizing premier league in Pakistan we thought that there is no better person than Haroon to guide us on various organizational aspects of the league. We sought his views and advice and are thankful to him for guiding us on number of matters.”

Shane Watson included in Australian squad for Adelaide test against South Africa

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 12:10 AM PST

All-rounder Shane Watson was on Friday included in Australia’s squad for the pivotal second Test against South Africa, despite concerns about his fitness.

Vice-captain Watson sat out the first drawn Gabba Test against the world number one Proteas with a calf strain and his inclusion for next week’s Adelaide clash is the only amendment to the line-up.

Rob Quiney, who was added to the squad when Watson pulled out of Brisbane, remains with the team.

National selector John Inverarity said it was not clear if Watson, who has been prolific with both bat and ball in all formats recently, would recover in time for the Test that starts on November 22.

“Shane Watson is making steady progress from his calf injury, but it is too early to determine if he will be fit to come under consideration for selection,” he said.

The Australians came out of the first of three Tests with an edge over the South Africans in the drawn game, but they must win the series to wrest the world number one ranking from their rivals, making Adelaide pivotal.

Inverarity said he was pleased with the way Australia bounced back in the Brisbane Test after South Africa ran riot with the bat on the opening day.

“The National Selection Panel was very pleased with the strong showing by Michael Clarke’s team after an indifferent opening day in Brisbane,” he said.

“They were put under pressure early, but showed great composure to not only regroup but then put considerable pressure on South Africa.”

The Australian fightback ensured they have now not lost in their last eight Tests under Clarke, while the Proteas, under Graeme Smith, have not lost an away Test match since India at Kolkata in February, 2010.

Australia squad: Michael Clarke (Capt.), Shane Watson, David Warner, Ed Cowan, Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey, Matthew Wade, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Ben Hilfenhaus, Rob Quiney.
