Preview: Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, 2nd Test, Colombo, 25-29 Nov, 2012

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 12:29 PM PST

Sri Lanka will welcome back opener Tillakaratne Dilshan for the second and final Test against New Zealand in Colombo starting on Sunday after he recovered from a back injury. Dilshan, whose last innings was an unbeaten 102 in the third match of the five-game ODI series, missed Sri Lanka’s 10-wicket win inside three days in the first Test in Galle.

“Dilshan is pretty much 100 per cent fit and Dimuth Karunaratne will make way for him,” captain Mahela Jayawardene told reporters on Saturday. “We want to get Dilshan back into things ready for the Australia tour, which is very important for us and we wouldn’t take a risk with him. When he left he was in pretty good form and now he feels ready and comfortable and the physio has given him clearance. He wants to play, he is happy and eager.”

There was also good news for New Zealand with fast bowler Tim Southee likely to play after recovering from a groin injury that prevented him for bowling on the final day in Galle. “He has been having a lot of rehab and participated in training yesterday, did the fitness work and pulled up well so he has been named in the 12 and he is looking good to play,” said New Zealand captain Ross Taylor.

New Zealand have named the same 11 that lost in Galle, plus uncapped leg-spinner Todd Astle, and will make a decision on the final make-up of the side on Sunday morning. “Todd has had a lot of success in New Zealand and is not far from being a genuine allrounder,” said Taylor. “He started off as a batsman and part-time spinner and he has worked hard on his bowling and turned himself into a decent spinner. He has fitted into the group very well, has got a good work ethic, trains hard and has come into the reckoning.”

New Zealand’s problems against spin have dominated the match build-up after Rangana Herath took 11 wickets in Galle, giving him 46 from eight Tests in 2012. Jayawardene said the player’s form gave Sri Lanka a psychological edge.

“Definitely,” he said. “Any bowler who take a 10-wicket haul in a Test match will create problems for the opposition and we will try and ride on that. Rangana gives us that control factor, he has been a steady competitor for us and the way he is bowling right now he will be a big factor for New Zealand, definitely.

“But we can’t rely just on Rangana and I was quite happy with the way the other three bowlers (Shaminda Eranga, Nuwan Kulasekara and Suraj Randiv) bowled at Galle and with the pressure and the opportunities they created.”

New Zealand’s spin phobia has been a key factor in five consecutive test losses against the West Indies, India and now Sri Lanka, their worst run since 1955. “(Spin has) been a factor as conditions have been a lot different to what we get at home but the players need to step up and play better,” said Taylor.

Probable XIs:
Sri Lanka: Tharanga Paranavitana, Tillakratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene (c), Thilan Samaraweera, Angelo Matthews, Prassana Jayawardene (wk), Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Suraj Randiv, Shaminda Eranga

New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor (c), Daniel Flynn, James Franklin, Kruger van Wyk (wk), Doug Bracewell, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel, Trent Boult

This knock is more satisfying: Cheteshwar Pujara #IndvsEng

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 07:45 AM PST

Young Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara on Saturday rated his century in the first innings of the ongoing second Test higher than the unbeaten double hundred he struck in the first Test, saying it has come in a more challenging situation.

Pujara, who is in scorching form, scored 135 to script India’s revival in the second Test.

“I think this innings was better than the Ahmedabad one. This was more satisfying than the double hundred. We were in trouble and the team needed a score on the board. Even the wicket was difficult to bat on. Yes it was satisfying to score a hundred in a difficult situation,” said Pujara, who had scored 206 not out in the series opener at Ahmedabad.

“The first target was to put up 350 on the board. We tried out best and in the end had a decent total.”

Pujara, who has batted for over 1,000 minutes and has been dismissed just once in three innings in the series, conceded that they needed a few more England wickets today but was optimistic it will happen on Sunday morning.

“The wicket (pitch) has eased out a bit. We needed more wickets. A couple of decisions went against us. I feel we bowled decently. It might be a different day tomorrow. It turns a bit more in the first session, we have to utilize that and get some more wickets tomorrow,” he said.

“Initially it was difficult to play spinners. But wicket is slowing down a bit. It’s just two days so far. It might turn later on, but it’s very difficult to predict the wicket now,” he elaborated.

Pujara dismissed comparisons with the player he has replaced in the team – the legendary Rahul Dravid.

“Consistency is the most important point for a batsman and I am happy I am able to perform consistently. That’s what I always try to do. I do the same thing in domestic format and happy to be doing that internationally.

“It’s a wrong comparison as Rahul Dravid has scored more than 10000 runs each in both the formats. I am just starting my career and don’t want to put any extra pressure on myself. I want to play my natural game and continue for Team India,” he said.

Pujara also praised England left-arm spinner Monty Panesar, who took his 11th five-wicket haul in an innings.

“He was quite impressive and I knew he will be bowling well on this kind of wicket, because I faced him in the practice match at the DY Patil Stadium. He knew the areas where he had to bowl He utilised the wicket very well.”

Pujara also dismissed the talks that he was a Test player who cannot adapt to the shorter format of the game.

“I can play ODI format too. I have done the same thing in domestic One day Challenger Trophy, I was very successful. I think I will get my chances in ODI format. Just need to keep improving myself as a batsman,” he said.

Pujara, who was hit on the ribs by a sweep shot from rival skipper Alastair Cook, said he had some soreness in the area but was otherwise fine.

“I got a little bit of soreness on my ribs. But I should be fine,” he said in his post-day comments, adding substitute fielder Ajinkya Rahane, who was also struck on his elbow by one sweep shot, was also fine.

“Ajinkya is fine. A little bit of soreness in his elbow he’s icing it up. Not a major injury,” he said.

Shahid Afridi to lead Karachi Dolphins in the national T20 Championship

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 07:14 AM PST

Pakistan’s flamboyant all-rounder, Shahid Afridi, in a bid to confirm his place in the national squad that will tour India next month, has agreed to lead the Karachi Dolphins side in the upcoming national T20 championship.

Afridi had earlier turned down the offer. “Afridi has agreed to lead the Karachi Dolphins squad after we spoke to him and convinced him that given his seniority he is the automatic choice to lead his home side,” the president of the Karachi City Cricket Association, Siraj-ul-Islam Bukhari said.

After Afridi’s refusal, the KCCA had decided to appoint Test batsman, Asad Shafiq as the captain.

Afridi, who has been struggling for form in one-day internationals and T20 matches, this year dropped a lucrative contract with the Sydney side to play in the Australian Big Bash T20 league so that he could make himself available for the national T20 championship.

Afridi said that he had decided to play in the national T20 event as it would allow him to regain his form and also convince the selectors.

The allrounder has made no bones of the fact that he is desperate to play in the coming series in India, which will be the first bilateral contest between the two countries in five years.

Just how much importance the cricket board and selectors are giving to the national T20 championship can be judged by the fact that the captaincy of most regional teams has gone to senior players.

Younis Khan will be leading the Abbotabad side, Misbah-ul-Haq the Faisalabad side and Mohammad Yousuf will lead the Lahore Lions outfit.

Shakib Al Hasan misses ton, Bangladesh on the verge of series whitewash #BanvsWI

Bangladeshi allrounder Shakib Al Hasan followed his four wickets with a fighting 97 to delay West Indies’ likely win in the second and final Test in Khulna on Saturday.

Scorecard | Day 4 Highlights 2nd Test

The 25-year-old left-hander missed his third Test hundred by a mere three runs but carried the home team from a precarious 82-5 to 262-6 at close on the fourth day, still needing 35 to avoid an innings defeat.

Shakib fell off the first ball of the penultimate over of the day, miscuing a lofted shot off left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and was caught at mid-off for a simple catch to Tino Best.

Shakib added a new Bangladesh versus the West Indies record of 144 for the sixth wicket with Nasir Hossain who supplemented the fight with an aggressive 64 not out.

Paceman Best (3-26) had put the West Indies on course for an innings victory with a triple strike in the post lunch session but Shakib and Nasir ensured Bangladesh do not go down without a fight.

Best had opener Tamim Iqbal (28) with the first ball of his first over, then rattled Naeem Islam’s stump with a sharp incoming delivery with his fourth ball before dismissing Shahriar Nafees (21) in his third over.

Bangladesh were off to a disastrous start when opener Nazimuddin was trapped leg-before for nought off paceman Fidel Edwards’s third ball of the innings.

Iqbal and Nafees took the score to 49 with the help of eight boundaries between them before Best was introduced. Captain Mushfiqur Rahim was bowled for ten by Permaul who took 2-51.

Shakib and Nasir then batted with confidence, improving the previous best sixth wicket stand of 87 against the West Indies, between Rahim and Nasir in the first innings here.

Earlier, Shakib became only the second Bangladeshi bowler to complete 100 wickets in Test cricket as he dismissed four batsmen in the morning session before the tourists declared on 648-9 after resuming at 564-4.

West Indian batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul remained unbeaten on a brilliant 150. The experienced left-hander held the innings, hitting 12 fours and a six off 282 balls. He also hit 203 not out in the first Test.

It was the West Indies’s highest total in a Test against Bangladesh, improving on the 559-4 declared they managed at Kingston eight years ago.

Shakib had Denesh Ramdin caught behind off a wild shot for 31 and then two balls later forced an edge off Darren Sammy which was well caught by Mohammad Mahmudullah in the slips to complete his 100 Test wickets.

He then removed Permaul (13) and Sunil Narine in the last over before lunch to finish with 4-151. Left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique was the only other Bangladeshi bowler to get 100 wickets in Test cricket.

Tillakaratne Dilshan declared fit, returns for 2nd test against New Zealand #SLvsNZ

Jacques Kallis likely to miss 3rd test at Perth #AusvsSA

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 05:28 AM PST

Jacques Kallis is unlikely to play the third and final test against Australia after aggravating his hamstring injury while compiling a fighting half-century in Adelaide on Saturday, South Africa’s team doctor said.

Kallis, who strained his right hamstring early on day one, struck 58 to help South Africa avoid the follow-on on day three of the second test, but was in obvious pain as Australia’s pacemen targeted the bulky all-rounder with short-pitched bowling.

“We knew he would always be able to bat. The challenge was what’s going to happen when he runs,” Mohammed Moosajee told reporters at Adelaide Oval.

“So it’s safe to say he’s probably aggravated his injury by running and batting. He’s still probably going to have to bat the second innings.

“If that happens there’s no guarantee to be fit and ready for the next test, with the three-day turnaround.

“Cricket South Africa’s selection committee back home are looking into possibly sending out someone as cover but they haven’t made a decision as yet.”

Kallis’s loss would be a major blow for the tourists, who face an uphill battle to defeat Australia in the second test.

Kallis, who was ruled out of bowling duties on day one, winced repeatedly as he ducked to avoid bouncers launched by Peter Siddle and the Australian pacemen on Saturday.

After being dismissed for 388, South Africa rattled through Australia’s top order to leave the hosts on 111-5 at the close, leading by 273 runs.

The 37-year-old Kallis scored 149 and 49 in the drawn first test in Brisbane.

Australia and South Africa start the third test in Perth on November 30.

Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen gave England a confident start on Day 2 of 2nd Test #IndvsEng

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 05:01 AM PST

Skipper Alastair Cook continued to torment India with yet another gritty batting display while Kevin Pietersen returned to form with an unbeaten half-century to give England a slight advantage in the second cricket Test in Mumbai on Saturday.

After dismissing India for 327 in the first innings, England moved to a comfortable 178 for two in 65 overs before the stumps were drawn on the second day, with the visitors trailing by 149 runs.

At close, the left-handed Cook, who had scored a big century in the first Test, was unbeaten on 87. The more aggressive Pietersen was batting on 62 after a stay of 127 minutes during which he faced 85 balls and hit nine fours.

Cook batted for 251 minutes and faced 209 balls, striking a six and ten fours in the process

The third wicket duo has so far put on 110 runs in 186 balls. For the record, Cook has batted for 960 minutes in all in the three innings he has batted during the series.

With three more days left in the second game of the four-match series in which India are 1-0 ahead, a result is on the cards on a track that is aiding the spin bowlers.

England, though, looked to have a slight advantage with a settled and experienced pair at the wicket and some more batting to follow.

On a wicket where the spin duo of Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann ran through the star-studded Indian batting line-up in which Cheteshwar Pujara (135) and Ravichandra Ashwin (68) stood out, the trio of home team spinners looked largely clueless against the determined Cook and Pietersen.

Barring the twin strike by left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha in the space of 11 balls just before tea, the home side's spin attack looked far less menacing than both Panesar (five for 129) and Swann, who ran through the tail on Saturday to end up with figures of four for 70

South Africa fightback to reduce Australia to 111-5 on Day 3 #AusvsSA

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 01:54 AM PST

South Africa gave themselves an outside winning chance in the second Adelaide Test with five Australian wickets late on the third day on Saturday.

The Australians, leading by 162 runs after the first innings, were sailing along at 77 without loss before a tumble of wickets gave the Proteas renewed heart with two days left.

At the close, Australia were 111 for five with first innings double centurion Michael Clarke on nine and Mike Hussey not out five. That gave the home side a lead of 273 with five wickets left.

Rory Kleinveldt bowled his team back into the contest with three wickets in 18 balls and Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel grabbed one each to add an edge to the contest.

South Africa had been facing the possibility of a huge run chase. The biggest successful chase at the Adelaide Oval was 315, which Australia achieved to overhaul England in 1902.

Swing bowler Kleinveldt struck with two wickets in three balls, getting David Warner to miscue to Faf du Plessis at cover for 41 and then dismissing Rob Quiney for his second duck, nicking to wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.

Kleinveldt, moving the ball through the air, picked up his third wicket when he bowled Ed Cowan for 29.

Ricky Ponting’s miserable series continued when he chopped Steyn on to his stumps for 16 after scoring four in the first innings and a duck in Brisbane.

Nightwatchman Peter Siddle lasted 16 balls for his solitary run before he was caught behind off Morkel.

South Africa were dismissed for 388 at tea with debutant Du Plessis the last out for a fighting 78 while Jacques Kallis batted in pain for 58 to help his team avoid the follow on.

The world number one ranked Proteas had appeared to have little hope of passing the follow on of 351 runs, struggling at 250 for seven before a 93-run stand between Du Plessis and Kallis revived the South African innings.

Du Plessis faced 159 balls and hit 13 fours and a six before he was caught by Clarke at silly mid on off Ben Hilfenhaus.

Kallis, batting at number nine after spending most of Thursday’s opening day off the field with a hamstring injury, scored a crucial half-century off 93 balls before he was caught behind off left-arm spinner Clarke.

Australia sought a review after an appeal was turned down and replays showed that as Kallis was sweeping the ball struck his pad, then glove before popping in the air for wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

It was Australia’s morning with pacemen Siddle and Hilfenhaus sharing four of the wickets, including the prized scalp of Proteas skipper Graeme Smith for 122.

But the Australians had problems of their own when paceman James Pattinson left the field for scans on a side strain and was unlikely to bowl again for the rest of the game.

The Proteas resumed at 217 for two but quickly unravelled, losing three wickets in four overs.

Offspinner Nathan Lyon enticed Jacques Rudolph to drive only to be caught by Quiney at short cover for 29.

Siddle grabbed Smith’s key wicket in the next over when the Proteas captain was caught behind by Matthew Wade for 122 off 244 balls.

Smith sought a referral which was upheld by the TV umpire much to the Proteas skipper’s disgust after the review’s Hot Spot infra-red imaging system detected a faint edge.

Smith has proved a lucky charm with his tons for South Africa. The Proteas have not lost the match in the previous 25 Tests in which he has scored a century.

Siddle struck again trapping AB de Villiers leg before wicket for one and Steyn (1) and Kleinveldt (0) were knocked over by Hilfenhaus.

Cheteshwar Pujara hits 135 as India all out for 327 on Day 2 #IndvsEng

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 11:08 PM PST

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin continued their partnership on Day 2 and take India to a respectable target of 327 runs in the first runs. India coming to bat on Day 2 lost Ravichandran Ashwin early to Monty Panesar. Ashwin played a superb innings of 68(114) to help Pujara build a good partnership for India.

After Ashwin wickets started to fall at regular intervals. Harbhajan Singh did played some knock and scored 21(35) before being lbw by Graeme Swann. Zaheer Khan then came in to replace Harbhajan Singh. Chetesehwar Pujara continued to play his inning but got stumped by a super delivery by Graeme Swann. Pujara was coming down the wicket trying to adjust and just defend, played inside the line, the ball went past the bat and Prior collected it just above the stumps. It hardly took him any time to remove the bails, Pujara goes for 135.

Zaheer Khan then hit a massive six and four before he was being caught on Graeme Swann delivery by Bairstow. Zaheer Khan contributed 11 runs to the Indian score.

England now have a tough task when India will use there three spinners right from the start of the innings. A score of 327 is good score looking at the pitch which is giving a lot of help to the spinners. So enjoy the England innings on Day 2 on below links:

Pujara (114 not out) and Ashwin (60 not out) took India to a respectable 266 in 90 overs from a precarious 169 for six on a Wankhede pitch that responded to spin on the opening day itself. Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar made his first opportunity of the series count by picking four crucial wickets.

The first session on Day 2 will be crucial where England will look to bowl out India under 300 while India will be looking to add another 100 runs to the score. Crucial day for both the teams and spin again will prevail heavily on Day 2.
