Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 3rd ODI Post Match Presentation 2012

Mahela Jaywardene: ‘The conditions were suited to us to be fair. Outstanding innings from Dilshan. He took up the responsibility as the senior player and so did Mathews. We needed a good partnership after the loss of three quick wickets. We had to make sure we put up that stand to get over the line. We tried to bring Mathews up the order and give him more responsibility. If he develops well, it is good for Sri Lanka. It gives the team a lot of balance.’

Ross Taylor: ‘We played a lot poorer than the other day. Credit to Dilshan. He took the game away from us. There was a little bit of dew that did not help the bowlers. Dislhan and Mathews had a very good partnership. It’s pretty frustrating with the rain and when there are only 100 odd people in the ground. I’m getting good with prediction of rain in Sri Lanka.’

Dilshan: ‘Just before the toss, I had some back pain. I wanted to play even if I was 50%. While batting I felt better. Every single run and match is important for the career. The first few overs was difficult. The ground was wet later on also the four fielder rule helped us. In the middle overs it was really helpful.’

India aiming for series win not revenge: Virender Sehwag

Posted: 06 Nov 2012 04:24 AM PST

Explosive India opener Virender Sehwag said here Tuesday that their aim is to win the Test series against England, beginning Nov 15.

“Our aim is to play well and win the series. England are a good side but so are we. I think it will be a tough series for both of us,” said Sehwag on the sidelines of the launch of a cricket bat collection named after him.

Sehwag also declared that they are not here for avenging their humiliating 0-4 washout last year against the same opposition in England.

“We are not here for revenge. All this vengeance etc. is all due to media hype. We are concentrating on playing well and winning for the team and country.”

India will play four Test matches in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata and Nagpur.

The 34-year-old scored a century Monday for Delhi against Uttar Pradesh in a Ranji Trophy tie, in spite of a finger injury.

Commenting on his form and performance, he said: “I am happy to score the century. Whether I am back in form or not, is not for me to decide but I thought I played well enough.”

“And as for the condition of my finger, it is getting better.”

Sehwag will also complete a century of Test matches, currently sitting pretty on 98.

“It was my dream to play for my country. Since the time I achieved that, my next dream has been to perform well and play 100 Tests for India. I am very happy that moment is coming soon.”

He also congratulated batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who is to be conferred the Order of Australia Tuesday in Mumbai.

Shahid Afridi decided to play first class cricket to regain form

Posted: 06 Nov 2012 12:12 AM PST

In a bid to get back into form for the upcoming tours to India and South Africa, Pakistan’s flamboyant allrounder, Shahid Afridi has decided to end a two year break from first class cricket and appear in the country’s premier first class tournament.

A senior official of Habib Bank for whom Afridi plays in domestic cricket said they had been asked by the allrounder to include him in the squad for the first class tournament.

“Initially we had not sent his name in the 20 member squad as he last played first class matches in 2010. But we have now asked the cricket board for special permission to allow us to replace left arm Abdul Rehman with Afridi in the squad,” the official said.

He said Rehman’s name was sent in the squad and it was removed later on after the spinner was suspended from playing any cricket after failing a dope test in England.

Afridi, who now focuses on just playing ODIs and T20 matches, last played a first class match when he captained Pakistan in the first Test against Australia at Lords in mid 2010.

He announced his retirement from the longer version of the game after that Test and since then has only focussed on limited overs cricket.

Afridi struggled with his form in the recent World T20 Cup scoring just 30 runs in six matches. In ODIs this year, he has scored 182 runs in 16 matches.

His bowling has also not been upto the mark as he took four wickets in the World T20 and has taken 15 wickets at an average of 43 in ODIs this year.

Former test players have advised Afridi to play some first class cricket to regain his form and sources said that chief selector, Iqbal Qasim had told him this would be the only way to regain his confidence for the upcoming tours both of which were high profile for Pakistan cricket.

Rain remains the issue as Sri Lanka take on New Zealand in the third ODI at Kandy’s Pallekele International Stadium Tuesday.

After washouts in the one-off T20 and first ODI, Sri Lanka and New Zealand cricket authorities Friday agreed to shift the venue for the second and third one-day internationals from Colombo to Kandy but the move doesn’t seem to have helped much.

In the second ODI on Sunday, rain came twice as Sri Lanka won by 14 runs on the Duckworth Lewis Method. New Zealand, who showed a solid batting performance for 250 for 6 with captain Ross Taylor taking the lead with a brilliant 72, saw their efforts go to pot when the match was called off with Sri Lanka 118 for 3 in 22.5 overs.

Clearly, it's weather that is the primary concern right now. However, Sri Lanka definitely go in as favourites owing to their brilliant home record. But New Zealand have shown in the last match that with a little bit of luck they can get the desired result. Once again they need the coin to fall in their favour, post a total of about 250 and then they can go forward from there.

However, there are a few concerns for the visitors ahead of the match: Taylor and Andrew Ellis apparently have come down with stomach bugs and they may not make it to full fitness in time. With nothing going their way, the Kiwis must be keeping their fingers crossed over the fitness of the two players, especially Taylor. Also, they would want Brendon McCullum to be fit for this match. The star wicketkeeper batsman could not play in the second ODI on account of a stiff lower back.

Probable XIs:

New Zealand: 1 Rob Nicol 2 Tom Latham/Brendon McCullum 3 BJ Watling 4 Ross Taylor 5 James Franklin 6 Nathan McCullum 7 Andrew Ellis 8 Kane Williamson 9 Kyle Mills 10 Tim Southee 11 Trent Boult
