England is prepared for tough challenge against India: Matt Prior

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 06:15 AM PST

Two days before the commencement of what is billed as the ‘revenge series’ for India, England wicket-keeper Matt Prior on Tuesday said that the tourists are well prepared for the tough challenge of taming the hosts.

“We have given ourselves the best chance, we have prepared as well as we can. It’s now down to performing on the pitch. It’s a tough challenge for all of us,” he said ahead of the opening Test commencing at the Motera here on November 15.

“Coming over here, we had a long preparation. We have been able to play a lot of cricket on these types of wickets.

We are now ready after getting used to the heat, the spinning tracks, the traffic. We are going into the Test match feeling fully prepared,” he declared.

It has been 28 years since any team from Old Blighty had come and bearded India in its own den and Prior said England are well aware of the history.

“It’s always a very challenging place to come and play.

India know their conditions fantastically well as we do when we play in England where we are brought up playing the swinging ball and we play it pretty well. Likewise these guys are brought up playing the spinning ball and they play it pretty well,” he said.

“Cricket is a religion out here and to be able to play in front of people with that mentality is a fantastic opportunity. To come out and win in this environment would be even better. Record speaks for itself how it’s been since England last won over here,” he added.

Incidentally, India were last beaten at home in a Test rubber by Australia in 2004-05 season and since then they have either won the series or drawn them against all other opponents.

Prior conceded that the 3-0 rout against the Pakistan spin duo of Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman in the United Arab Emirates a few months ago, still rankles the England squad.

But the 30-year-old South Africa born stumper also insisted that the team has the ability to move ahead and take on the new challenge head-on as it has a very good batting line-up.

Prior was non-committal when asked about the Test wicket at the Motera Stadium that looked barren.

“My reading of wickets is very poor. We will have to wait and see how the wickets change.

“A lot of times in India you looked at the wicket and felt it’s going to deteriorate and become dust bowls and it plays flat right through. And at other times it looks flat for three days and suddenly ball starts turning and keeping low on the last two days. That’s why we have to keep our mind and options open,” he said.

When the inevitable question on the return to the side of star batsman Kevin Pietersen came up, Prior came out with a straight bat.

“We wouldn’t want KP to change too much because it’s how he is that makes him so special. If KP comes on (as a) shy, introvert character I will be more worried because I want him to go out and express himself like he does.

“You only have to walk round India. These guys who have seen him in IPL can’t wait to see him bat. We certainly can’t either.”

“It’s always in the back of their minds (the debacle against Pakistan). But as an international sportsman you have to move on quickly,” Prior said.

“What I hope we can do is learn from our own experiences, learn from our mistakes and take them forward into these Test matches. Every big batter in our side wants to score big runs in India. We have a very, very good batting team.”

Prior was of the same opinion as his teammate Graeme Swann that the very successful (at home) Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha may not be as mystical as their Pakistan counterparts, but were no less bowlers.

“Probably (they are less mystical). (But) It does not make them any less quality bowlers. And we have to prepare as if against any other spin bowlers. We know their quality. We know their knowledge of their own conditions will certainly help. I reiterate the point that we have given ourselves the best opportunity through our preparations out here,” he said.

“We have done a lot of good work. We had a bad experience (against Pakistan in UAE) and we are learning from that. If you have been here (in the subcontinent) before you know what to expect and it does not change really. What is important is how we use the experience to situations, wickets, crowds and everything else (to perform better),” he added.

Chanderpaul, Powell put West Indies in command on Day 1 of 1st Test

The ever-reliable Shivnarine Chanderpaul and opener Kieran Powell hit stubborn hundreds to give the West Indies a commanding start in the first Test in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Chanderpaul remained unbeaten on 123 for his 26th Test century while Powell notched 117 for his second to help the West Indies to an imposing 361-4 at close on the opening day after Darren Sammy won the toss and opted to bat.

The 38-year-old, who joined Powell at the stroke of lunch on 106-3, not only played a calm knock but also guided his young colleague to reverse Bangladesh’s early advantage on a slow turning Shere Bangla stadium pitch.

Chanderpaul, ranked fifth in the world, added an invaluable 125 runs for the fourth wicket with Powell before strengthening the West Indian position during an unbroken 130-run partnership with Denesh Ramdin who was 52 not out at close.

Bangladesh had looked good in the first hour when debutant off-spinner Sohag Gazi, opening the attack with the new ball, dismissed Chris Gayle (24) and Darren Bravo (14) before paceman Shahadat Hossain knocked Marlon Samuels for 16.

But Powell and Chanderpaul avoided any further loss, taking the West Indies to 223-3 at tea.

Powell reached his century with a sweep off left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan for his 15th boundary before he was bowled by Gazi who finished with 3-97. Powell hit 18 boundaries and a six during his 178-ball stay.

Chanderpaul, playing his 145th Test, was equally resolute as he completed his hundred with a four and single off Nasir Hossain. He has so far hit 17 boundaries off 195 balls.

Earlier, Gayle greeted Gazi with aggression, smashing the first and fourth ball of the match by Gazi for big sixes before clobbering two fours off paceman Shahadat Hossain to threaten Bangladesh’s bowling attack.

But Gazi soon had revenge, having the flamboyant opener caught at long-off in his fifth over.

Darren Bravo added 42 for the second wicket before miscuing a drive off Gazi and was caught at point to leave the West Indies at 74-2.

Like Bangladesh the West Indies handed a debut to a young spinner in the form of 23-year-old left-armer Veerasammy Permaul.

The second and final Test will be played in Khulna from November 21.

South Africa, Australia settle for draw in 1st test

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 03:00 AM PST

South Africa battled through an uncomfortable day at the Gabba to reach 166 for five and earn a draw in the first test against Australia, who declared on 565-5 halfway through Tuesday’s first session to try and force a result.

Scorecard | Day 5 Highlights 1st Test

Australia captain Michael Clarke, who made 259 not out, declared with a first innings lead of 115 over South Africa’s 450, but his bowlers were unable to claim enough wickets to force a result in a test which lost a whole day to rain.

Jacques Rudolph (11) was adjudged lbw to spinner Nathan Lyon despite a television review to give Australia a late glimmer of hope but AB de Villiers (29) and Vernon Philander (one) ushered the tourists to the close of play.

“It was unfortunate not to get a result today,” said Clarke, who was named Man of the Match for his record innings.

“But I think we fought hard with both bat and ball after the first day.”

James Pattinson, the pick of Australia’s bowlers, had given the hosts an early breakthrough by having opener Alviro Petersen caught behind by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade for five to leave South Africa on 6-1.

The 22-year-old seamer also bowled Hashim Amla for seven before lunch but the world’s number one batsman was brought back to the crease for a no ball, the fourth wicket to be saved by the same infraction in the match.

The second wicket also came off Pattinson, who had a fiery exchange with Graeme Smith (23) before tempting the South African captain into an outside edge that Rob Quiney claimed well at gully.

Australia fruitlessly used both of their referrals as they ramped up the pressure on the South Africans and just when Amla and Jacques Kallis looked to be getting on top of the bowlers, they were separated.

CLARKE SPARKLES Amla aimed a loose shot at a Peter Siddle delivery he could have left and the ball went straight to Mike Hussey at short cover.

Jacques Kallis, who backed up his first innings 147 with a 49, looked like he might guide South Africa to safety but fell to spinner Lyon with Clarke taking an excellent low catch in the slips.

By then, however, Australia’s chance of a win was all but gone.

Clarke, who resumed on 218 with his team on 487-4, again sparkled with the bat in the morning sunshine, adding 41 runs to his personal tally and taking the record for the highest individual score at the Gabba.

The 31-year-old shared a partnership of 228 with Hussey, who reached his 17th test century in a quickfire 128 balls with a rushed single before being dismissed on the next delivery he faced.

Morne Morkel claimed the wicket, his third, with substitute fielder Faf du Plessis taking a fine catch at full stretch at short cover.

Clarke was not going to be outshone, however, and he crashed a Dale Steyn delivery back over the bowler’s head to bring up his 250 with his 28th four.

His third double century of the year, which came from 398 deliveries in 582 minutes, eclipsed the 235 England’s Alastair Cook scored at the Gabba in the opening test of the Ashes series two years ago.

It was a remarkable turnaround for Australia, who were reeling at 40-3 when Clarke took the crease on Sunday afternoon.

South Africa’s number one test ranking is on the line in the series, which continues with matches in Adelaide and Perth after Brisbane.
