Shahid Afridi ends Big Bash contract despite clearance

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 10:45 AM PST

All-rounder Shahid Afridi has ended his contract with Australian Big Bash side Sydney Thunder despite being cleared to play in the Twenty20 league by Pakistan.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had earlier refused the former captain, along with star spinner Saeed Ajmal and batsman Umar Akmal, permission to play in the league before reversing its decision on Monday following a request from Australian cricket authorities.

But Afridi insisted he would rather play in Pakistan’s domestic league as he struggles to recapture the form that made him one cricket’s best all-rounders in limited overs but which has deserted him in recent times.

“I have ended my contract in the Big Bash league, because I want to play in the national event to improve my form and justify my selection in the team,” he said.

Earlier PCB spokesman said the three players would be allowed to play in the Big Bash following a request from Cricket Australia that said they had already signed their contracts.

“We will allow these players to go to Australia at the end of our Twenty20 tournament around December 8,” Sarwar said, adding that the players will have to return for the national camp for the Indian tour.

Ajmal signed for Adelaide Strikers and Umar Akmal for Sydney Sixers.

Pakistan will play India in two Twenty20 matches and three one-day internationals between December 25 and January 6 — the two countries’ first series since 2007.

MS Dhoni praises Cheteshwar Pujara for match winning performance

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 10:14 AM PST

India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni lauded Cheteshwar Pujara for his match-winning performance in the first Test match against England at the Sardar Patel Stadium.

“Cheteshwar is very calm and cool. He knows his role. He accepts responsibility which is very important. After scoring 200-odd runs he was not shy to stand at short-leg. It would have been easy for him to say he was not feeling 100 per cent to stand at short-leg but he was there,” said Dhoni about Pujara, who won the man-of-the-match award for his unbeaten knocks of 206 and 41 in the two innings.

“He has the temperament to play big innings. He just needs to keep doing the things he’s doing.”

Dhoni also praised pacers Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav for their effort and patience.

“Our fast bowlers bowled really well. Zaheer put in a lot of effort and we have seen Umesh improve, he is bowling real quick. The contribution of the fast bowlers was really important. They gave us the breakthroughs on a track that was not ideal track for fast bowlers,” said the 31-year-old.

Talking about Yuvraj Singh, who scored a healthy 74 in his comeback match, Dhoni said there was no concern about southpaw’s fitness.

“He looks very good. He batted really well. Those 70-odd runs were vital. In the first innings he was not bowling in the areas where he should be but in the second innings he was quite impressive,” said Dhoni.

Pakistan clears Afridi, Ajmal and Umar Akmal for Australia’s Big Bash

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 04:00 AM PST

Pakistan on Monday allowed three players to compete in Australia’s Big Bash Twenty20 competition following a request from Australian cricket authorities.

Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal and Umar Akmal had all signed up to play in the league from next month, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) last week refused permission.

Afridi had been due to play with Sydney Thunder. Ajmal signed for Adelaide Strikers and Umar for Sydney Sixers but the PCB ordered them to feature in a domestic Twenty20 event being used to test players ahead of the matches against arch-rivals India.

But on Monday, PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar said they would be allowed to play in the Big Bash following a request from Cricket Australia that said they had already signed their contracts.

“We will allow these players to go to Australia at the end of our Twenty20 tournament around December 8,” Sarwar told AFP, adding that the players will have to return for the national camp for the Indian tour.

Pakistan will play India in two Twenty20 matches and three one-day internationals between December 25 and January 6 — the two countries’ first series since 2007.

All three players were reportedly concerned about not being signed in the future for the Big Bash if they had not honoured their contracts.

Rangana Herath guides Sri Lanka to 10-wickets win over New Zealand in 1st Test

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:30 AM PST

Sri Lanka crushed New Zealand by 10 wickets on the third day of the opening Test in Galle on Monday to gain a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Scorecard | Day 3 Highlights 1st test

The hosts effortlessly chased down a 93-run target, with debutant Dimuth Karunaratne remaining unbeaten with 60 and Tharanga Paranavitana 31 not out.

New Zealand, trailing by 26 runs on the first innings, were shot out for 118 in their second innings after lunch.

Middle-order batsman Daniel Flynn top-scored for New Zealand with 20, while Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Rangana Herath finished with 6/43.

The second and final Test starts in Colombo on Sunday.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 247 in their first innings on Day 2 in reply to New Zealand’s 221.

New Zealand had collapsed to 96/8 in their second innings at lunch on the third day after failing to cope with Herath’s left-arm spin.

The tourists, trailing by 26 on first innings, were just 70 runs ahead with two wickets in hand. They lost seven wickets in the morning session for 61 runs after resuming on 35/1.

Fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara did the early damage with two wickets in his opening three overs before Herath, who took one wicket on Sunday, struck four times in five overs to have New Zealand reeling at 79/7.

Herath, who took 5/65 in the first innings, was on a hat-trick when he bowled Daniel Flynn (20) and then trapped Doug Bracewell leg-before.

The Sri Lankan spinner started the slide when he had skipper Ross Taylor leg-before for 18 before accounting for James Franklin (two) for his first two wickets.

Kulasekara struck in his second over of the morning when he bowled opener Martin Guptill before dismissing Williamson, caught down the leg-side by a diving wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene.

Guptill fell on his overnight score of 13, while Kane Williamson (10) added just one run in the morning.

Fast bowler Tim Southee took four wickets and off-spinner Jeetan Patel three for New Zealand.

MS Dhoni credits bowlers for 9-wickets win over England

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 03:05 AM PST

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Monday credited the bowlers for his team’s nine-wicket victory over England in the opening Test, saying that the spinners put in a lot of hard work on a wicket that did not offer much turn.

After India scored 521/8 declared in the first innings, it was the bowlers, especially the spinners, who set the stage for the team as they dismissed the English team twice.

“There was something in the wicket to start with but as the game progressed there was low bounce but not much turn. It was hard work for the spinners. They bowled 70-80 overs, even fast bowlers bowled overs 40 overs. So it was a fantastic effort from them,” Dhoni said.

“Even if you misjudged the flight you had time to adjust and not much carried to the slips. So it was important to bowl at the right areas and was also important not to give many runs. Ojha bowled a tight line and took extra responsibility.”

The India skipper also had good things to say about man of the match Cheteshwar Pujara who scored an unbeaten double ton in the first innings and was not out at 41 in the second.

“It was a fantastic game for Pujara. He has the temperament to play big innings and has shown that on the domestic circuit. He makes sure he converts fifties to hundreds. Overall it was a fantastic effort by the team,” he said.

Dismissed for 191 in their first innings, England put up a commendable performance in their second essay, scoring 406 after following on.

India then overhauled the 77-run winning target, scoring 80 for one in 15.3 overs to go one up in the four-match series.

Herath: I enjoy bowling here, I have done well here in the last two years. I just wanted to stick to the basics and I was rewarded for that.

Herath is the MoM for his 11/112

Mahela: Herath has taken over the responsibility of the bowlling unit. He is the leader of the pack, he has had a great time over the last two years. The Test was very competitive for the first two days. Kulasekara got us the big wickets early today. I love to bat over here, it is a great venue and I enjoy batting here. Dilshan will walk straight back into the side, but it was good for the youngster, Karunaratne. We need to give them more chances for them to learn about the game better.

Taylor: We need to learn as fast as possible before the next match. I thought we played Randiv well but need to plan against Herath. We just came off the ODI series, no excuses about not having a practise match. I thought our new ball bowlers bowled exceptionally well. The partnership between Mathews and Mahela took the game away from us. We may make some changes for the next Test, we will sit down and analyse.

Pujara: ‘Being in Gujarat makes me feel at home. It’s a great feeling. Initially the wicket was slow but as the game progressed the ball was coming onto the bat. There was slow turn so it was easy to bat.’

Pujara is the Man of the Match

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: ‘We stuck to our plans. The spinners bowled really well in the first innings. There was low bounce in the second innings but not much turn. The bowlers had to do a lot of work as we asked them to follow on. It was a fantastic effort from the bowlers. Even if you misjudged the flight, you had time to adjust on this slow wicket. The edges were not carrying as well. What’s important is to not give too many runs and we did that well. Fantastic effort from Pujara. He has a good temperament and has scored double centuries in domestic cricket. He knows how to get big scores. Ojha looks to bowl tight and never gives a lot of runs. This game he took the responsibility and did well. Overall, I’m happy with the team’s effort. Everyone supported each other. The batsmen supported Pujara when he was doing well and the other bowlers supported Ojha during the bowling.’

Cook: ’500 was a good score on the wicket but we didn’t do well in the first innings. It was a great fightback from us from a tough situation. There was a slight hope on the final day but it wasn’t to be. We hope to start better in Mumbai. Prior and I knew we had to do a lot of work. It wasn’t meant to be though. But we showed a lot of character in this Test to fight back the way it did. The pitch helped turn but it was slow spin. The runs in the first innings is very crucial in the sub-continent and we have to improve on that.’

Ojha, Pujara helps India beat England in 1st Test, take 1-0 lead in the series

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 02:11 AM PST

India won the first cricket Test against England by nine wickets at Motera here Monday to take the lead in the four-match series.

Virender Sehwag (25) and Cheteswar Pujara (41 not out) helped India chase down the 77-run target in 15.3 overs. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 11.

Earlier, India took control of the match after packing England off for 406 in their second innings at lunch, which left the home team with a paltry victory target of 77 on the fifth and final day here today.

Pragyan Ojha dealt two severe blows on England in the space of only 12 balls, by breaking the stubborn sixth wicket stand between rival captain Alastair Cook and wicketkeeper Matt Prior, to provide the spark for India's renewed quest of winning the Test.

Umesh Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin and Zaheer Khan polished off the tail in style to leave the hosts a small target to chase in the last two sessions and take a 1—0 lead in the four—match series.

Ojha finished with 4 for 120 after a fine morning spell of 2 for 18 in 11 overs, which included the wickets of Cook (176) and Prior (91).

England trailed India by 330 runs after making 191 in their first innings in reply to India's mammoth for 521 for 8 declared and then avoided the innings defeat yesterday by reaching 340 for five.

The visitors lost their last five wickets for the addition of 66 runs in 26.3 overs and the final wicket — that of Tim Bresnan — fell seven minutes before the scheduled lunch forcing an early break.

After being frustrated by Cook and Prior since the afternoon session yesterday, Ojha dismissed the two in superb fashion by deceiving both with his turn off the bowlers' rough to prise open the doors of victory for India before lunch.

Yadav then packed off England vice captain Stuart Broad for 3 to leave the visitors tottering at 378 for 8 in their second innings, in effect 48 for 8 having conceded a 330—run first innings lead to the hosts.

Zaheer Khan ended the England innings by having Bresnan (20 in 75 minutes) caught at short extra cover by substitute fielder Ajinkya Rahane, fielding for the absent Gautam Gambhir who was yet to return from Delhi where he had gone yesterday.
