The first session on day 4 would be crucial: Pragyan Ojha

Posted: 17 Nov 2012 10:25 AM PST

Having starred with a five-wicket haul, India’s left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha said that the first session of play on Sunday would be crucial to the outcome of the first cricket Test against England.

“The first session would be crucial. It will set the tone for the rest of the game. We need to get quick wickets,” said the 25-year-old, who bagged five for 45 to bowl out England for 191 in the first innings, prompting India to follow-on.

Thanks to Ojha and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s three for 80, India took a huge 330-run first-innings lead.

However, England, following on, fought back strongly by making 111 without losing a wicket in the second essay.

Alastair Cook led the way with an unbeaten 74, though the tourists are still 219 runs behind.

Ojha, who is playing in his 17th Test, said he was pretty pleased to take a five-for — his fourth in this format — against a top team like England.

“I am pretty pleased by taking a five-for against England in the first innings. They are a top side and are no 2 ranked in the world. But this is a long series and a lot of work needs to be done,” he said.

Ojha said the wicket had slowed down a bit and also lacked the bite it had on the first two days.

“The wicket has slowed down and the bite that was there is missing. As I said the first session tomorrow is crucial,” Ojha reiterated.

Ojha, who came to the post-day media conference with his right elbow bandaged, said the injury was not serious. He had banged against the advertisement hoarding on the boundary line while fielding and hurt his joint.

He said he was happy to get the wicket of England’s top batsman Kevin Pietersen, who was clean bowled.

“KP is a very good batsman and has scored lot of runs. I am happy to get him out. The key was to bowl in the right areas and allow the wicket to do the rest,” Ojha remarked.

England still in the game against India: Matt Prior

Posted: 17 Nov 2012 10:00 AM PST

England may have their backs to the wall in the first cricket Test against India, but wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior on Saturday insisted that they were “still in the game”.

After being bowled out out for 191 to give India a huge 330-run first-innings lead, England staged a fightback through skipper Alastair Cook’s unbeaten 74, which took them to 111 for no loss at close on day three.

“It was a shocker to lose wickets quickly and was disappointing. As a professional you have to look ahead and take positives. The way (Nick) Compton and Cookie (Alastair Cook) went about their task this afternoon was fantastic. We are behind but are still in the game,” said Prior.

Prior top-scored with 48 in England’s first innings.

India made 521 for eight declared in their first essay.

“We are honest enough to admit we did not get that right.

We knew the wicket was going to turn a bit. I think we got a little bit ahead of ourselves and panicked a bit.

“(In the) second innings we were a lot more calm, led by Cookie and Compton, the way they batted. May be it’s turning a bit, bouncing a bit, but you can bat with time out (there),” Prior added.

Though the team was shot out for under 200 with Pragyan Ojha taking five wickets, Prior said it was better to look ahead.

“There’s no point in crying over spilled milk, you have to move on. We are still in this game though we are behind as 111 for no loss sums up the turnaround. That’s what we would be looking at,” he insisted.

Prior said that the wicket was behaving differently on different days.

“Wicket is certainly turning, you look at day one wicket and day two wicket – they were different. That’s not an excuse at all. We were prepared for it. We have to execute our plans well.”

Prior came out in defense of England’s top two batsmen — Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell — who were dismissed off successive balls against Ojha.

“Bell is one of the finest batters in hitting the ball over the top. One thing we have talked about is to play your game and back yourself and the team will back you the whole way. I think Bell knew the plan he had and what he wanted to do but it did not come off.

“Had it come on everyone would have said what a fantastic shot it was. You cannot question the quality and class of the batting of Ian Bell. We all know his class, and hopefully, he is going to show it (in the second innings),” he said.

“KP is a fantastic player. He is one of our main batsmen but he is only one (there are others) player. We all have to play our own games. I have watched him batting against Morne Morkel (in the last home series against South Africa). I watched him batting in Colombo getting a 150. That was fantastic.

“May be he did not get runs today. As I said, he is one of 11 players. We all need to hold our hand up and we all need to perform. We have a big second innings coming up,” he added.

Prior said that if England can get something out of what looks like a lost game after the first-innings collapse, it would be great for the rest of the four-match series.

“Who knows what is realistically achievable? The ball is turning, there is a bit of reverse swing. If we get anything from this game it will be a fantastic effort.”

He also came out in support of the Decision Review System, not used in this series as the BCCI and the home side players are against its inaccuracy.

“If there is technology out there which helps and aids in making split-second decisions, then why wouldn’t you use it? We have seen a number of series in which it has worked very well. It’s not about trying to sneak wickets using technology but about eradicating major errors.

“Some decisions went against us, some against India whatever. If there is a technology available and available in every series, I personally think you should have it,” he concluded.

Herath five-for put Sri Lanka in command on Day 1 of 1st Test against New Zealand

Posted: 17 Nov 2012 06:09 AM PST

New Zealand are looking to target Sri Lanka with pace as they attempt to win their first test match in Sri Lanka since 1998.

“I haven’t seen the wicket so far today, but it’s got another day to go and pitches do change,” New Zealand captain Ross Taylor told reporters on the eve of the first test which starts on Saturday.

“Because they cover the whole ground it might look a little bit different in the morning, but that’s probably the side that will go in in this next test match,” he said.

New Zealand’s bowling department, has been boosted by the presence of former Sri Lanka paceman Chaminda Vaas who is assistant fast bowling coach for the series.

“Vaas has given us an insight into how to play in Sri Lankan conditions and we have a couple of left-arm quicks who are learning a lot off him at the moment, he’s been an asset to our group so far,” said Taylor.

Taylor also expressed concern about wet weather which has affected New Zealand throughout the tour and led to three successive matches in the one-day series, which they lost 3-0, being decided using the Duckworth-Lewis method.

“Both teams are in the same boat, and the weather will probably play its part over the next two matches,” said Taylor

“You can prepare to play, and I guess switching on and off is going to be a crucial part of this game.

“Test cricket is great to play and as we’ve been here in Galle, it’s rained everyday so far, and we’ll have to factor that into our preparations and into the match.

“The last time we played here I don’t think there was a lot of spin, there was spin, but not excessive spin,” he added.

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene thought the pitch would only aid spin bowlers in the latter stages of the match.

“The wicket will help spin bowlers only on the last two days and I hope it will be a good track for the fast bowlers too,” he said.

Having played cricket with a white ball for the past four months, Jayawardene said his team needed to adjust to playing with a red one.

“The players have had training for three days or so with the red ball and we look forward to doing well in the test match that begins tomorrow and give our best and come up with a win,” the skipper said.

The second of the two tests is due to begin in Colombo on Nov. 25.

Cook, Compton leads England fightback on Day 3 of 1st Test against India

Posted: 17 Nov 2012 05:29 AM PST

Pragyan Ojha snapped up five wickets to give India a mammoth 330-run lead before England staged a spirited fightback in the second innings to give themselves a slight hope of saving the first cricket Test in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

England were bundled out for 191 in the first innings with Ojha taking five for 45 while Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets, prompting India to enforce the follow-on.

But the script changed remarkably in the second innings as skipper Alastair Cook (74 batting) and Nick Compton (34 batting) steered England to 111 for no loss at close on an eventful third day with the visitors still trailing by 219 runs.

With two full days left in the match, India still hold the advantage of going 1-0 up in the four-match series.

England will have to bat out of their skin to save the game on a Sardar Patel track that appears to be getting slower.

The visitors showed better application in the second innings, after India, who scored a massive 521 for eight declared, asked them to follow-on.

Left-arm spinner Ojha claimed his career's fourth five-wicket haul with figures of five for 45 in 22.2 overs in his 17th Test while Ashwin grabbed three for 80 in 27 overs.

Starting the second innings after an early tea, Cook and debutant Compton, who was out for nine in the first innings, put on an unbeaten century stand to give England a fine start in their quest for avoiding an innings defeat.

Neither Ojha, nor his off-spin partner Ashwin, could pose as many problems to the English openers in the second essay as they did in the first.

The spinners, especially Ashwin, also bowled a lot flatter and did not stick to a consistent line of attack on a wicket that became more and more placid as the game progressed.

Tino Best five-for helps West Indies beat Bangladesh in 1st Test

Posted: 17 Nov 2012 03:42 AM PST

West Indies won the first Test against Bangladesh by 77 runs on the fifth and final day in Dhaka on Saturday, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.

Bangladesh, who were set a 245-run target, were bowled out for 167 in their second innings to lose for the 64th time in their 74 Tests.

Sohag Gazi took 6-74 — the best figures by a Bangladeshi bowler on debut — to raise hopes of a home win as the West Indies were dismissed for 273 in their second innings in the morning.

But the Bangladeshi batsmen floundered against a pace-cum-spin West Indian attack, with Tino Best taking a maiden five-wicket haul with 5-24 and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul finishing with 3-32.

The second and final Test begins in Khulna from November 21.

Match scores: West Indies 527-4 dec and 273; Bangladesh 556 and 167

Powell: After the 1st innings ton, the physio told me you will not get a good chance to score another ton. Sometimes you will be unlucky on the field. I am really happy to be on the list of some great players

Kieron Powell is the Man of the Match for his twin centuries.

Sammy: Bangladesh played really well and their batsmen fought very well, but credit to our bowlers, who did well to take 20 wickets. Best and Rampaul bowled really well today and helped us win the game. It turned out to be a good Test match for us, we capitilised on the bad balls and that helped us. We are not that good in Tests, but last 2 series we have improved and that inspires us to do well in the future.

Rahim: The boys readlly worked hard for the 4-5 days, but we couldn’t end on the winning side, Sohag played well in his debut Test and 2-3 other guys also chipped in. Test cricket is always tough for us, we really did well in the 1st innings, but we didn’t apply ourselves well in the 2nd. The physical fitness was not a concern, but they bowled well and we didn’t get any big partnership. We will come hard in the 2nd Test.

India bowl out England for 191 runs, enforce follow-on, Ojha picks 5 wickets on Day 3 of 1st Test

Posted: 17 Nov 2012 01:37 AM PST

Ojha’s fifth wicket ended England’s innings at 191, still trailing India by 330 runs with more than two days left in the match.

Ojha clean bowled Matt Prior to complete his fourth five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Zaheer Khan trapped Stuart Broad plumb in front of the wicket to reduce England to 187/9.

Ojha’s fourth wicket broke the 47-run stand between Matt Prior and Bresnan. Ojha tossed the ball up in the air and landed it around off. The ball turned away a bit with some extra bounce as Bresnan tried to defend it off his front foot. It took the shoulder of the bat and Kohli took the simplest of catches at second slip.

Indian bowlers continue to rule on the Day 3. The day started with 4 wickets in the first session of Day 3 and then England all out just before the tea. England have a big task ahead when they come in to bat after tea. England trailing by 330 runs need to tackle the Indian spin bowlers. So far England batsman failed to build partnership. With two days left in the game India definitely in string position to win the game.
