Preview: Mumbai A vs England, Tour Match, 03-05 Nov, 2012

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 11:54 AM PDT

Special invitees Cheteshwar Pujara and Shikhar Dhawan would be the closely watched by the national selectors when Mumbai A take on the visiting England team in the tourists’ second three-day warm-up game from Saturday.

Pujara, a prolific run-getter in domestic cricket and scorer of a ton in the opening Test against New Zealand in August, looks a certainty for India’s first Test squad to be announced on the last day of this game.

Dhawan is a strong contender to be the reserve opener at Ahmedabad following his big scores in the earlier part of the 2012-13 domestic season.

The Delhi batsman would have played in place of Abhinav Mukund for India A in the opening warm-up game but opted out of the originally announced squad as his wedding date clashed with the match.

Apart from this duo, there are players like captain Suryakumar Yadav, Kshemal Waingankar and Balwinder Singh Sandhu Jr, who will be watched with interest by the selectors.

Medium pacer Waingankar, in fact, had taken a six-wicket haul when England last visited the country and played a warm-up game at Brabourne while Sandhu made an impressive Ranji Trophy debut as a new ball bowler last season.

There are others like batsmen Hiken Shah and Bhavin Thakkar, apart from leg spinner Sagar Gorivale and medium pacer Javed Khan who would be eager to impress against a top visiting side.

The visitors, on the other hand, had a satisfactory outing in their opening drawn game against India A that ended Thursday.

Most pleasing from their point of view was the long stays at the crease of captain and opener Alastair Cook and middle order batsman Samit Patel, both of who scored centuries.

There were attractive half centuries from Jonathan Trott and Matt Prior, the first choice stumper, to further give a boost to their confidence ahead of the tough battles in the four-Test rubber starting on November 15.

Speedsters James Anderson and Tim Bresnan, expected to make the eleven at Ahmedabad, had long spells under the sun and on a wicket that was good for batting.

Anderson claimed four wickets by concentrating on moving the ball and Bresnan used his aggression, pace and the short ball to snap up 4 wickets par for the course.

The third fast bowler who played in the game, Steven Finn, limped off after bowling only four overs due to a right thigh strain and is not likely to take the field in the second game.

Vice-captain Stuart Broad is certain to play along with the fifth pace bowler Graham Onions. The third and final warm-up game against Haryana is scheduled between November 8 and 11 at Ahmedabad.

A small concern for the visitors was that part-time left arm spinner Yuvraj Singh grabbed a career first-class best of 5 for 94, and his victims included Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Patel and Prior.

However, pace spearhead Anderson said after the match that the visitors were not too concerned about Yuvraj getting a fifer.

Lack of match practice against spin could be the undermining factor for the tourists who will be up against off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and left arm Pragyan Ojha in the Test series.

The Indian spin duo has scalped wickets in a heap by bowling together in the last two Test rubbers at home against the West Indies and New Zealand.

But for Sagar Gorivale, a leg break bowler, the Mumbai A squad also lacks a frontline slow bowler, which is seen as a ploy by the Indian selection committee to deny the visiting team good practice against slow bowlers ahead of Tests.

From the visitors’ point of view, they may opt to give a chance to left arm spinner Monty Panesar to get into the groove.

Panesar is fighting for a place in the eleven with Patel who has stolen the first march with a ton and a two-wicket haul in the visitors’ tour-opener.

Teams:

Mumbai A (probable): Suryakumar Yadav (c), Cheteshwar Pujara, Shikhar Dhawan, Hiken Shah, Bhavin Thakkar, Bravish Shetty, Kshemal Waingankar, Balwinder Singh Sandhu (Jr.) , Sagar Gorivale, Javed Khan, Shardul Thakur.

England (probable): Alastair Cook (c), Ian Bell, Tim Bresnan, Nick Compton, Steven Finn, Samit Patel, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior (wk), Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott, James Anderson.

Sachin Tendulkar slams century for Mumbai against Railways: Ranji Trophy 2012

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 05:06 AM PDT

Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar slammed a fluent century for Mumbai against Railways, in the Ranji Trophy 2012 opening match on Friday.

Tendulkar’s century put Mumbai in a strong position on the opening day, as they reached 294 for three against Railways.

Tendulkar raced to 100 off 103 balls, which was studded with 14 boundaries and three hits over the fence.

It is Tendulkar’s 18th century for the Mumbai side and 79th overall, and his only first class century since January 2011.

In this match, Indian top cricketers Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan are representing their home side Mumbai after a long time. This will provide an ideal opportunity for both to get some form ahead of the important Test series against England.

Tendulkar is representing his home association for the first time since the final against UP at Hyderabad in 2009.

Zaheer had played a few away games last season to test his match fitness ahead of getting back into the international arena after an injury lay-off.

Kemar Roach ruled out of Bangladesh tour due to injury

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 01:45 AM PDT

Injury has forced fast bowler Kemar Roach to miss the Test series of the West Indies tour of Bangladesh, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced.

Roach is suffering from a knee injury and could be sidelined for about a month but may heal in time to play the one-day series, reports CMC.

West Indies team physiotherapist C.J. Clark described the injury as “a right medial hamstring tendon tear”, which Roach sustained in a club match three weeks ago in his native Barbados.

“Kemar has not recovered adequately from the injury to join the squad for the tour,” said Clark.

“He has commenced rehabilitation and will undergo further assessment. He is expected to return to action in three to four weeks time.”

Roach has been West Indies’ most successful bowler in Tests this year, snaring 39 wickets at 22.25 runs apiece in seven Tests.

He is tied with three other players as the second-most successful bowler in Tests this year, along with South African fast-medium bowler Vernon Philander, as well as off-spinners Saeed Ajmal of Pakistan and Graeme Swann of England.

Roach is being replaced by Fidel Edwards, who has taken 158 wickets at 38.37 runs apiece in 54 Tests since his debut nine years ago.

Edwards is scheduled to leave the Caribbean with the remainder of the 15-member squad Saturday.

The West Indies play Bangladesh in the first Test Nov 13-17 at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in that country’s capital of Dhaka, and the sec ond Nov 21-25 at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in the south-western city of Khulna.

The Tests will be followed by five One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 International.

India will miss Dravid and Laxman against England: John Wright

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 01:15 AM PDT

Former India coach and New Zealand cricketer John Wright pointed out that hosts will miss the experience of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in the middle during the upcoming India-England Test series.

Wright also ruled out India’s complete dominance, but insisted that it will be a closely contested series.

“The Test series will be interesting. England are coming off a home series defeat against South Africa (2-0), while India will miss the experience of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

The middle-order is quite new. The series will be a closely-contested one and it won’t be 4-0 to India,” Wright said.

The former Test cricketer added that the first innings of the match will hold the key to success as the team that will put runs on the board or picks up early wickets will enjoy an upper hand.

He also mentioned that it will be a real test for the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha.

However, Wright said that the two have bowled very well in tandem so far.

The first of the four Tests is scheduled to be played at Motera Stadium here on November 15.

India go into the series against the backdrop of eight consecutive away Test defeats. However, they beat bottom placed New Zealand 2-0 at home in September.

Averse to the idea of Day-Night Test matches, Wright said the ICC’s move to introduce D/N Tests is an attempt to bring back spectators but the format should be thoroughly trialled first.

“The idea is good on paper but cricketing realities have to be taken into consideration before it is practically applied,” Wright said, highlighting the difficulties that a cricketer would have to face while playing at night in colder climes such as Wellington.

As an opening batsman, he said, he would be delighted to face bowlers in the afternoon, because at night bowlers will get an unfair advantage in a venue like Durban.

On the battle for No. 1 rank in Tests, Wright said: “The field is quite competitive and currently there is no one side which is dominating both at home and on road.”

South Africa have the best balance, but Wright doesn’t see them dominating the Test arena in the next few years. “Though India climbed the summit of Test cricket and stayed at the top for some time, it was a difficult stay,” he said.

“It is tough for a side to stay at the top consistently, but India has the talent and fight to reclaim the top spot,” Wright said.

On the resurgence of the West Indies, Wright stated that they have got talent to challenge the opposition in shorter formats and are a tough and improving team.

Talking about his native country and their slide in Test format, Wright said: “New Zealand lacks depth as a unit.”

He added that the lack of quality spinner apart from Daniel Vettori was a big handicap for the team.

“The team has promising talent both in batting and fast bowling departments, but their performance has been inconsistent,” Wright pointed.

Regarding Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir’s poor run of form with the bat, the Kiwi said: “They should bide some time at the wicket before going for shots.”

“If they can bat for two hours, the job of the middle-order will be easy,” he insisted.

On having different captains for different formats, Wright said it is easy for a coach to co-ordinate with a single captain, but with the amount of cricket being played, multiple captains might become the order of the day.

Wright, meanwhile, favoured the concept of having a Test Championship, saying that the top Test teams playing together can bring back the glory to the longer version of the game.

India vs Pakistan Cricket Schedule 2012 announced by BCCI

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 12:57 AM PDT

A day after the Home Ministry cleared Pakistan cricket team’s upcoming tour of India, the BCCI on Thursday announced the schedule of the limited-over series that begins with a Twenty20 international on December 25 in Bangalore.

The Pakistan team will touch down at Bangalore on December 22 and will kick-off their campaign against the hosts with a T20 international at the city’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The visitors will then move to Ahmedabad for the second T20 game (December 27) before heading to Chennai for the first of the three-match ODI series on December 30.

The second ODI of the series will be played at Kolkata on January 3, while the third and final one-dayer will be held at Delhi on January 6, a BCCI release stated.

The arch-rivals have not played a bilateral series since Pakistan’s tour of India in 2007. The cricketing ties between the two nations were snapped after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Schedule:

December 25: 1st T20 International at Bengaluru

December 27: 2nd T20 International at Ahmedabad

December 30: 1st ODI at Chennai

January 3 : 2nd ODI at Kolkata
