Preview: Bangladesh vs West Indies, 1st Test, Dhaka, 2012

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 10:16 AM PST

West Indies are going into their first international game since their World T20 triumph last month in Sri Lanka, and it's Bangladesh they are up against at Dhaka on Tuesday. West Indies, though improved in the limited-overs format in the last couple of the years, still have a lot to prove in the longest format of the game.

Star Caribbean batsman Chris Gayle, who has had a successful return since calling it peace with the West Indies Cricket Board, said despite the success in ODIs and T20s it's Test cricket that poses maximum challenges.

"I am happy to be a part of the World Twenty20, it feels good. It’s a milestone. But we have to play well in the longer format of the game, that has been our major challenge. I have made the necessary adjustments from limited overs cricket to Tests and it will be a challenge," Gayle said ahead of the match.

West Indies were deprived of good practice when their three-day side game was called off due to wet ground in Savar, a town 40 kilometers from capital Dhaka. The track at the Shere Bangla National Stadium is expected to be a rank turner and the Caribbean team may find it hard to get going on such a pitch. Gayle also acknowledged that it could get really tough for them. “It's always difficult to play Bangladesh in Bangladesh. But you know guys are good, even though we won the series last time we came here, but they have got good players. They have a captain [Mushfiqur Rahim] who leads from the front."

As for Bangladesh, it's a very important series. They haven't done well against top nations since being given Test status in 2000. Questions have been raised over their capability, so a good show in the two-Test contest is what they must be aiming at. They have some really world-class players in their squad, like Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza and Tamim Iqbal. It's their opportunity to lose. The whole team has got to fire together to get the better of this Windies team high on recent successes.

Probables XI
Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Junaid Siddique, 3 Shahriar Nafees, 4 Naeem Islam, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (Captain & WK), 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Nasir Hossain, 9 Elias Sunny, 10 Shahadat Hossain, 11 Rubel Hossain.

West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Assad Fudadin, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Narsingh Deonarine, 7 Denesh Ramdin (WK), 8 Darren Sammy (CAPTAIN), 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Fidel Edwards, 11 Veerasammy Permaul.

Rahul Dravid backs Mahendra Singh Dhoni as Indian team skipper

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 03:39 AM PST

Former captain Rahul Dravid has backed Mahendra Singh Dhoni to remain in the hot seat but felt the selectors can, in the near future, consider reducing the current India skipper’s workload in one format to get the best out of him.

“From his own personal point of view, you also want to see the best of Dhoni as a player. He has a lot to contribute as a batsman and wicketkeeper and we want to see the best of that,” Dravid said.

“I don’t think we want to lose that and if that means at some stage, maybe the time’s not right now but in the near future, we have to relieve him of the responsibility from one format to get the best out of him as a player then I think the selectors have to take that call,” he added.

Notwithstanding the eight Test defeats last year, Dravid said Dhoni should be given a chance to learn from those reverses.

“Dhoni has every right to survive it, because he’s Dhoni.

He has had a disappointing last year but he has won India a World Cup, we’ve been the No. 1 Test side under Dhoni.

“If you put pressure on him so early in the piece, or if you try to change someone like Dhoni now, I don’t think you’ll get to see what he’s learned from the last year,” Dravid was quoted as saying in ‘Cricinfo’.

Dhoni has captained India in 203 of his 318 matches across all formats.

The Indian great advised Dhoni that he should not just look forward to the upcoming series against England and Australia, but also start thinking about India’s overseas tours next tours.

“He has got to have an eye on some of the challenges he faces in his career, to be seen as a good overseas captain as well. That will be a function of the team he gets, but he’s got to try and have an influence on the kind of team he gets, the kind of personnel he wants and that’s a process that he’s got to start now.

“It’s a process of communication and negotiation with selectors, coaches, working on some of the skill-sets of some of the bowlers and young batsmen coming through on what is required in a year’s time.

“So while he has a micro view of what needs to be done in these (home) series, he needs to discuss with the selectors about the kind of players he wants in South Africa and entrust them with the job of actually finding those players in domestic cricket,” Dravid said.

He also saw Virat Kohli as a future captain, provided he was able to extend the success he has had for another year.

“In the next 12 months, if he has the kind of 12 months he has had and establishes himself in all three formats of the game, people are going to seriously have to look at him.”

Clarke double ton put Aussies ahead of South Africa in 1st Test

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 02:31 AM PST

Majestic Michael Clarke unfurled another double century and opener Ed Cowan scored his first Test hundred as Australia batted frazzled South Africa out of the opening Brisbane Test on Monday.

Scorecard | Day 4 Highlights 1st Test

Clarke produced an imperious captain’s knock with his third huge innings this year to share in a record stand with Cowan and put the Australians ahead on a batting-friendly Gabba pitch.

At the close of the fourth day, Australia were 487/4 in reply to South Africa’s 450, with Clarke unconquered on 218 and Michael Hussey breezing along on 86, giving the home team an outside chance of victory on Tuesday’s final day.

Australia were in some danger at the start of the day at 111 for three and trailing the Proteas by 339 runs. But Clarke and Cowan laid the foundations for their team’s lead with a record 259-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Clarke continued his flourishing batting form as skipper with his 20th Test hundred and his third double century of the year, after his unbeaten 329 and 210 against India at home in January.

He is the highest scorer in Tests this year with 1,000 runs at 111.11 and as Australian captain is averaging over 60 with the bat.

His stand with Cowan was the highest fourth-wicket partnership by Australia at the Gabba, surpassing Clarke and Michael Hussey’s 245-run effort against Sri Lanka in 2007.

It was also the biggest fourth-wicket stand by Australia against South Africa and the fifth biggest overall against the Proteas in Test history.

The partnership was only ended by a freakish run-out of Cowan for 136 shortly before tea. He batted for 388 minutes and hit 18 boundaries.

It was the only wicket South Africa took all day.

The left-hander backed up too far at the non-striker’s end and was out when bowler Dale Steyn got his fingers to a stinging Clarke drive and deflected the ball onto the stumps.

It was Cowan’s first century in his eighth Test match and dispelled doubts about his Test credentials after coming into the series with an average of 29.86.

Cowan was dropped on 123 by Steyn while hooking Rory Kleinveldt to fine leg.

Steyn appeared to be distracted by Jacques Rudolph going for the catch and was not in position when the ball hit his hands.

Hussey maintained the momentum with his lively undefeated 86 off 109 balls, joining in a rollicking 188-run partnership with Clarke to ram home the advantage.

The vaunted South African bowling attack was toothless at times. Skipper Graeme Smith, without the services of incapacitated part-time spinner JP Duminy, brought his own off-spin into the attack to add variety.

Duminy ruptured his Achilles tendon while warming down after Friday’s first day’s play and will be out for six months.

The Proteas bowled 22 no-balls with debutant Rory Kleinveldt (11) and Vernon Philander (8) the main culprits, to blow out extras to 34 in the Australian innings.

New Zealand wins toss, opts to field vs Sri Lanka – 5th ODI 2012

Toss: New Zealand have won the toss and elected to field

Taylor: ‘First time I have won the toss, struggling for words. We have to make use of the conditions and try to put them under pressure. In the last game the batting let us down and we need to step up. We’ve got nothing to lose and hopefully we can send the ODI boys home with a win. Same team.’

Mahela: ‘To be honest wanted to bat first so that some of the guys get an opportunity and we have seen how we go when chasing. Don’t want to be complacent after three wins, want to finish it off with a win. Couple of changes – Kula and Herath are in the test side, they have been rested; Shaminda Eranga and Akhila Dananjaya come in.’

Pitch report: The same pitch is being used again today. There are tufts of grass and the odd crack. The surface has dried out when compared to the last game. There will be plenty of movement for the bowlers and it will be a tough day for the batsmen reckons Craig McMillan

Graeme Swann returns back to India for test series

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 12:48 AM PST

England spinner Graeme Swann is set to return back to India after flying to home to see his sick baby daughter. As a result, Swann missed the third and final warm-up game against Haryana.

English captain Alastair Cook spoke about his return, stating everything is well and he has no doubt about Swann's performance in the upcoming Test series.

"I haven’t spoken to Swanny, but all the reports have been good news – and he is coming back in the morning," Cook said.

“That’s fantastic for us, and fantastic that all’s well at home as well.”

Cook pointed out that even though flying to England back has been tiring; Swann will come out well in the series.

“It’s not ideal. But in 2006, I think someone travelled quite a long way round the world as well – I think I did it even further than Swanny,” he said.

“He knows how to bowl; he’s been here before; he’s an experienced campaigner who knows what he’s doing. I’ve no doubts or concerns about Swanny," Cook was quoted as saying by www.sportinglife.com.

Cook said he isn't worried about controversial cricketer Kevin Pietersen's performance too.

“All of our batters have had some quality time in the middle, and it’s particularly pleasing to see KP got a hundred,” he said.

Stuart Broad, who returned back from injury, spoke about his fitness level

“It felt fine, but we’ll know more in the morning,” he said.

“I’ll need two more bowls before the Test – Tuesday will be the main one. It feels okay, but maybe it was the adrenaline. We’ll know more tomorrow.”

If Broad isn't able to make it throughout the series, we will see Tim Bresnan being accompanied by Stuart Meaker. Cook seems upbeat about Meaker and Graham Onions' performance after their last warm-up match against Haryana.

“I thought all three of them showed really good control in that last session, with the reversing ball,” said Cook.

“It is encouraging that we have that strength in depth. On a tough tour like this, I’m sure we’ll need it.

“Tim’s been an integral part of our attack for the last couple of years, and he’s certainly done himself no harm in this game," he concluded.
