Sourav Ganguly disappointed with Tiwary and Dinda exclusion from Indian squad

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 11:15 AM PST

Former team India captain Sourav Ganguly expressed his disappointment at pacer Ashok Dinda and middle order bat Manoj Tiwary not getting selected for the first two Tests of the forthcoming home series against England and said he would have picked both as a selector.

“It is disappointing to find Dinda and Tiwary are not in the squad. Dinda’s selection was important. No player in the country is more deserving than Tiwary and Dinda,” said Ganguly.

“They have always performed well whenever they got the opportunity. But neither of them know when they will get the next chance in spite of doing well,” he said.

In spite of hitting a fine 93 in a practice match against visiting England, Tiwary did not find favour with the new national selection committee headed by Sandip Patil, which Monday announced the Indian team for the first two Tests.

On the other hand, Dinda was the highest wicket taker in last year’s domestic season.

Batting for Dinda, Ganguly said pacers have a short life span and they should get a chance when they are in top form.

“Ishant Sharma has been given a lot of opportunities but has not performed as desired. Dinda was the highest wicket taker last year in the domestic season and has started off well this season. It is disappointing to say the least,” said the southpaw.

“Had I been a selector I would have always played Manoj in all the formats of the game. He is a fine batsman, can bowl and field well. I would have surely picked Dinda and Tiwary in my team,” added the former skipper.

On the selection of Indian cricket board president N. Srinivasan-owned Chennai Super King’s Murli Vijay, Ganguly said the Tamil Nadu willower was perhaps chosen as a replacement for dashing opener Virender Sehwag who has been nursing a thumb injury.

“It is really hard on my part to say that he was chosen because he plays for CSK. He has been selected probably as a replacement for Sehwag who earlier had sustained a thumb injury,” said Ganguly.

Meanwhile, Tiwary took the disappointment positively.

“These are part and parcel of professional life and you have to take them in your stride. I am taking this positively. My next aim is to do well in Ranji Trophy,” Tiwary said.

Suresh Raina dejected on being axed from Indian squad for England series

Uttar Pradesh captain Suresh Raina was so hurt after learning about his ouster from the Test squad, that he decided to skip lunch on the final day of his team’s Ranji Trophy game against Delhi, prompting his state team coach Venkatesh Prasad to term it as “unfortunate.”

A source in the UP dressing room informed that once Raina got the news of his omission, he was not in a mood to have food and literally went into a shell.

“He was very sad and told his teammates that he is not in a mood to eat. He is a very bubbly character in the dressing room and suddenly went very quiet. He also didn’t stay back to collect the mementos presented by the Ghaziabad District Cricket Association and left immediately after UP had won,” the source told PTI.

While batting at number three, he scored 37 that set up UP’s victory.

Prasad also seemed pretty unhappy with the decision.

“I think it’s really unfortunate that Suresh Raina is not there in the Indian team. I think if someone is given a chance at the Test level, he should be given a long rope to prove himself. Also he is a terrific player and had scored a fine half-century against New Zealand.

“He played a very crucial knock today. They were bowling to a 7-2 field yet he played some terrific shots,” Prasad told the reporters after the match.

Mahela Jayawardene slams ICC for new ODI rules

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 10:16 AM PST

Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene said that the new ODI rules which came into force in the ongoing Sri Lanka-New Zealand series were a bowlers’ nightmare.

He was addressing reporters in Kandy ahead of tomorrow’s third ODI against the Kiwis.

“The rule which makes mandatory for five fielders inside the circle has brought in added pressure on bowlers,” Jayawardene said.

He said that sides need to be stronger in batting as in a chase they would have to be on pursuit of bigger targets.

“It is difficult for the bowlers to do well. They come under added pressure as boundaries would be easy to come by with just four fielders permitted outside in the non power play overs,” Jayawardene said.

The ICC made changes in the existing rules, including those in ODI cricket, which came into force in the current Sri Lanka-New Zealand series.

Jayawardene said Sri Lanka need to adjust to the new rules.

The team had experimented a few plans to suit the new rules in the second ODI yesterday which Sri Lanka won to take a 1-0 lead.

Yuvraj Singh returned to India’s Test fold after a year along with senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh in the 15-member squad announced on Monday for the first two Tests against England starting November 15.

Yuvraj, who is on a comeback trail after recovering from a rare germ cell cancer, replaced Suresh Raina in the squad for the series which is a four-match affair.

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who is nursing a thumb injury, has been left out of the squad paving the way for Harbhajan to return to the Test fold after a gap of more than a year.

Pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, whose fitness was under the scanner after he limped off the field during during a Ranji Trophy match on Sunday, has also been retained apparently after getting the physio’s nod.

Vernon Philander named South Africa’s Sportsman of the year

Cricketer Vernon Philander was named South Africa’s ‘Sportsman of the Year’ after losing the top title of ‘Sports Star of the Year’ to Olympic gold-medallist swimmer Chad Le Clos.

Le Clos won gold in the men’s 200m butterfly at the London Olympic Games when he pipped legendary American Michael Phelps, and also notched up a silver in the men’s 100m butterfly.

He bagged a million rands and a luxury BMW car by securing the most votes from the South African public.

Other nominees for the award were Hashim Amla (cricket), Natalie du Toit (swimming), Siyabonga Nomvethe (soccer), Vernon Philander (cricket), Oscar Pistorius (athletics) and Caster Semenya (athletics).

Semenya was named the ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ after her silver medal in the 800m in London.

Pistorius got the ‘Sportsman of the Year with a Disability’ after becoming the first amputee runner to compete at the Olympics, with Du Toit was named Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability.

Cricket South Africa congratulated Philander for the honour he got.

“Vernon has been an inspirational member of the Proteas Castle Lager Test squad during the past year,” said Cricket South Africa Acting CEO Jacques Faul.

“To become the fastest player to take 50 Test match wickets in more than 100 years is a phenomenal achievement on its own. But to do so in his debut year of Test match cricket is truly remarkable.

“To cap it all he was named Man of the Match in South Africa’s Test victory at Lord’s this year when the Proteas claimed the No.1 ranking in Test match cricket,” he added.

Shane Watson ruled out of first test against South Africa

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 12:14 AM PST

Talismanic all-rounder Shane Watson has become Australia’s latest injury scare ahead of next week’s Test against South Africa after pulling up with a sore calf during a Sheffield Shield clash.

Watson left the field after bowling his first over of the day for New South Wales in their match with Queensland in Brisbane on Saturday.

On Friday, former Test skipper Ricky Ponting was withdrawn from Tasmania’s Shield match against South Australia with hamstring soreness, while pace hope Pat Cummins was ruled out for the season with a stress back complaint.

Watson, 31, stopped short after bowling his sixth ball and then held a lengthy conversation with New South Wales and Test captain Michael Clarke.

He stayed on the field for the following over but later left the ground to return to his team’s dressing room.

Medical staff reported Watson suffered calf soreness and would continue to be assessed during the second day’s play.

Australia’s vice-captain has had problems with his troublesome calf in the past five months and was sent home from England during the one-day series loss in July.

Watson was brought home early from the Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa last month amid fears of burnout and a lack of activity in the longer form of the game.

Cricket Australia’s plan was to give Watson a rest and have a four-day Sheffield Shield game for New South Wales, before tackling South Africa in the opening Brisbane Test.

The first Test between Australia and South Africa begins in Brisbane on Friday.
