Preview: Bangladesh vs West Indies, 2nd Test, Khulna, 21-25 Nov, 2012

Despite their convincing victory in the opening Test, West Indies captain Darren Sammy believes his side can still improve further, as they face Bangladesh in the second Test starting Wednesday. The West Indies brushed aside Bangladesh by 77 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka but needed a strong bowling effort after they trailed in the first innings and then also batted poorly on their second turn at the crease.

Speaking ahead of the encounter at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium which is hosting its first ever Test, Sammy said his batsmen were still struggling in the second innings and this was an area where they needed to step up. “I would like us to improve our second innings batting. This is something that has affected us in the past, where we only bat well in one innings and don’t back it up in the next,” said Sammy.

“It was a much better effort in this Test, but it’s still something we can improve. The guys who scored runs for us in previous Test series, like Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels and myself, we didn’t get much in the first Test, yet we still got a big total, so its good contributions are coming from different members of the team.”

In Dhaka, the West Indies piled up 527 for 4 declared with veteran left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul getting an unbeaten double century but Bangladesh produced an excellent reply to reach 556 all out. The Windies were then bundled out for 273, leaving the hosts with 245 to get for victory. Fast bowler Tino Best snatched 5 for 24 to cripple Bangladesh late on the final day.

Sammy hailed the Caribbean side’s bowling effort and said tour management was now mulling over including an extra pacer for the second Test. “We took 20 wickets. In order to win Test matches, you have to take 20 wickets, you have to be able to bowl out the opposition twice,” Sammy noted.

“I think it was a good decision to play the extra bowler in the first Test. Veerasammy Permaul created some important breakthroughs for us. Neither [Sunil] Narine nor I bowled as well as we could in the second innings. The way Tino Best bowled and the way they played him, we may be tempted to play Fidel Edwards since he too is quite pacy.”

Saturday’s victory was the third straight Test win for West Indies following their clean sweep of the two-match series against New Zealand during the summer. And with Test wins a rarity for West Indies in recent years, Sammy said capturing the second Test would not be only important in terms of a convincing series win but it would extend a winning streak which was important to building team confidence.

“The previous match was a hard-fought victory for the team. We have seen more of [the Bangladeshis]. We know how competitive they will play, so we can formulate a better plan for them going forward, both batting and bowling,” Sammy added.

The hosts may be forced into making one change to their eleven with the experienced opener Tamim Iqbal nursing an elbow injury. Bangladesh have included the uncapped star under-19 opener Anamul Haque in the squad as cover for Tamim.

Probable XIs:
Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal/Anamul Haque, 2 Junaid Siddique, 3 Shahriar Nafees, 4 Naeem Islam, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk/capt), 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Mahmudullah (vc), 9 Shohag Gazi, 10 Shahadat Hossain, 11 Rubel Hossain

Steve Waugh slams MS Dhoni’s negative approach for cricket

Posted: 20 Nov 2012 11:15 AM PST

Former Australian captain Steve Waugh on Tuesday criticised Mahendra Singh Dhoni for asking the curators to “doctor the pitches” and pointed out that if a side wants to be the best it should be able to negotiate all conditions. “Dhoni’s comments this morning were really negative to the game, when he said Indian curators to doctor the pitches, which I can’t understand,” Waugh said during the India- Australia Innovative Forum here.

The Indian skipper, after winning the first Test against England at Ahmedabad on Monday, expressed his displeasure at the Motera wicket and said that “we wanted the curators to prepare the pitches that will turn from day one”.

“You want to be aggressive and be the best in the world, you got to take all the conditions and not always ask for the conditions that suits your style of play. I was a bit surprised with that. I think if you are looking to be the best in the world you got to learn to play in all conditions.”

The former great said that during his tenure as the head of the Australian team he was never bothered about what sort of wicket they were playing on. “I captained the side for 57 games and never once had a word with the curator about what sort of pitch we are going to play,” Waugh said.

However, the veteran of 168 Tests said that India were the favourites to win the four-match rubber against England. “India are a strong side, always hard to beat in India and some of the young players are coming through, which is great sign for Indian cricket. (Cheteshwar) Pujara getting a double century, Virat Kohli, (Pragyan) Ojha taking wickets, it is great for Indian cricket.

“You got to have to turn out of this, no players are bigger than the game, someone will always step up. Sometimes you get too carried away that experienced players are irreplaceable but the natural thing will happen, someone will step up to play and take that role. India will will win this series, I think they will win it 3-0 because the pitches will suit their team,” the 47-year-old said.

Pragyan Ojha, Cheteshwar Pujara rise in latest ICC Test rankings

Indian left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who starred with a nine-wicket haul in the first Test against England, rose nine places to break into the top-five of the latest ICC rankings issued in Dubai.

The 26-year-old recorded match figures of 77.2-24-165-9 in the game India won by nine wickets in Ahmedabad to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

The other Indian in the top-20 are pace spearhead Zaheer Khan (up one place to 14th and off-spinner R Ashwin (steady at 18th).

Not a single Indian features in the top-20 of ICC’s batting chart but Cheteshwar Pujara, who struck a doubled hundred in the Ahmedabad Test, has rocketed 35 places to the 24th position.

England captain Alastair Cook, who scored a gutsy 176 in his side’s second innings, has returned to the top 10 by rising four places to seventh.

Matt Prior, on the other hand, has become the fifth England batsman inside the top 20 after achieving a career-best ranking of 18th.

Indian opener Virender Sehwag is now in 22nd position after gaining one place following his 23rd Test century.

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal declared fit for second test against West Indies

According to a team official, Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has passed a fitness test ahead of the upcoming second test against West Indies, Reuters reported.

“He felt fine batting in the nets and we think he is fit to play tomorrow,” team physio Vibhav Singh told reporters.

Tamim, who top scored in the first innings of the first test against Bangladesh and helped Bangladesh post 556, injured his elbow in the first Test in Dhaka and underwent the fitness test after a team training session in Khulna ahead of the second test starting on Wednesday.

Uncapped player Anamul Haque, was earlier called up by Bangladesh as a back-up for Tamim for the second test.

Steven Finn ruled out of second test against India

Posted: 20 Nov 2012 09:43 AM PST

England pacer Steven Finn has been ruled out of the second Test against India with the thigh strain he picked up at the start of the tour.

Finn, who was injured during England’s first warm-up match of the tour, was expected to be recalled for the second Test here to bolster the English attack which failed to make an impression in the first Test in Ahmedabad.

He is now, however, expected to undergo a scan on Wednesday to know the extent of the problem.

England are certain to make changes to their bowling attack for the second match with left-arm spinner Monty Panesar likely to come back.

The batting line-up could also be slightly altered as Ian Bell has flown home for the birth of his child.

Skipper Alastair Cook, after the failure in the first Test, urged all his players to chip in.

Cook made a defiant 176 in the second innings but could not avert a nine-wicket defeat.

Saeed Ajmal eagerly waiting for series against India

Posted: 19 Nov 2012 11:50 PM PST

Top Pakistani spinner Saeed Ajmal can’t wait to roll his arm over in the much-anticipated tour of India next month as the late-bloomer has played just once before on the Indian soil.

“I started my International career late and I have got a chance to play just one match against India in their own backyard the 2011 World Cup semi final at Mohali,” Ajmal told PTI.

“That is why I am eagerly looking forward to this tour as it will be a challenge bowling to the Indian batsmen in their own backyard,” he said.

Ajmal, who began his international career at the age of 31, was among the probables when Pakistan last toured India in 2007 but couldn’t make the final squad for any format of the game.

“I was disappointed then because every cricketer wants to play a proper series in India and prove his worth,” he said.

“I didn’t get a chance to play a full series in India because of the suspension of bilateral relations since 2007 but now finally I am getting my chance and it is exciting for me,” he added.
