England dominate on Day 1 of Lords Test against South Africa

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 12:50 PM PDT

JP Duminy and Vernon Philander led South Africa’s recovery from 54 for four to 262 for seven at stumps on the first day of the third Test against England at Lord’s on Thursday.

While the score, particularly the number of wickets lost, would have been uncomfortable for South Africa captain Graeme Smith, who won the toss and batted, the situation could have been so much worse.

Fast bowler Steven Finn (three for 68) rocked the tourists with a pre-lunch burst of three for three in seven legitimate deliveries on his Middlesex home ground while James Anderson took three for 57.

But come the close Philander was 46 not out, having shared a seventh-wicket stand of 72 with Duminy, who gave it away on 61.

South Africa, 1-0 up in this three-match series and needing only to avoid defeat to replace England as the world’s number one Test side, saw their powerful top order all out before lunch.

Opener Smith had made scores of 259 and 107 in his two previous Lord’s Tests.

But a third century eluded him when Anderson, with his first ball from around the wicket, had the left-hander caught behind for 14 by wicket-keeper Matt Prior although England had to review Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena’s initial not out decision.

It was the first time in four innings this series that Smith, who on Thursday broke Australia great Allan Border’s record for most Tests as captain by leading the Proteas for the 94th match, had failed to make a fifty.

First change Finn, who retained his place at the expense of Tim Bresnan after England recalled off-spinner Graeme Swann having opted for an all seam attack during the drawn second Test at Headingley, then took over.

Alviro Petersen, who made a Test-best 182 at Headingley, was next out when he ‘gloved’ the tall Finn, getting good bounce, down the legside to Prior for 22.

It seemed he’d withdrawn his hand from the bat in time, but Petersen did not review the decision.

And 49 for two soon became 54 for four as England, whose build-up to this match had been overshadowed by their decision to drop Kevin Pietersen for sending text messsages to South African players, saw Finn make a quick double strike.

Hashim Amla, who posted a South Africa record 311 not out in their innings victory in the first Test at The Oval, was bowled for 13 by a superb Finn delivery that nipped between bat and pad to clip off-stump.

Jacques Kallis then fell for just three, going the same way as Petersen, although his legside glove needed a lengthy review by Australian third umpire Rod Tucker.

It appeared Kallis’s hand too was off the bat at the moment of impact.

But Tucker felt differently, much to the all-rounder’s visible disbelief, and England captain Andrew Strauss had yet more reason to celebrate his 100th Test and 50th as skipper.

AB de Villiers and Jacques Rudolph put on 51 for the fifth wicket.

But the stand ended when de Villiers (27), edged Anderson to third slip Alastair Cook.

Rudolph, carelessly, was bowled off an inside edge, hitting across the line by Swann for 42 and, three balls into the new ball Duminy, not moving his feet, wafted at an Anderson ball well outside off-stump and was caught behind, having batted for nearly three hours.

There was a bizarre end to the day’s play when a power cut all round Lord’s saw several floodlights fail, with the umpires going off for bad light.

India crush Papua New Guinea, to face Pakistan in U19 World Cup quarter-final

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 04:52 AM PDT

Medium pacer Ravikant Singh returned with a five-for as Indian colts thumped minnows Papua New Guinea by 107 runs to enter the quarter-finals of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup on Thursday.

Ravikant produced a fine seam bowling display to bundle out Papua New Guinea for meagre 97 runs in 32 overs in pursuit of a victory target of 204 set by India.

The 18-year-old pacer from Kolkata first accounted for wicket-keeper batsman Dogodo Bau before dismissing Vagi Oala and Sese Bau in quick succession to leave the opponents tottering at 54 for five in the 19th over.

Ravikant then claimed Chad Sopar and Kabua Vagi Morea on alternate deliveries of his ninth over to finish with impressive figures of five for 21 from his nine overs.

Kamal Passi and Baba Aprajith claimed two wickets each while Vikas Mishra claimed one wicket.

For Papua New Guinea, the only notable contribution came from the blade of Charles Amini (28) and Christopher Kent (27).

India’s batting woes in the tournament, however, continued as they were bundled out for 204 in 46 overs after electing to bat earlier in the day.

Had it not been for a 72-run knock from Vijay Zol and a well constructed 58 from Prashant Chopra, India would have struggled to even cross the 200-run mark.

The only other useful contribution came from wicketkeeper Smit Patel (30).

The Indian colts got an early jolt when skipper Unmukt Chand (4) returned to the hut in the second over.

Aparajith (14) and Hanuma Vihari (6) followed suit without contributing much and with Chopra falling in the 23rd over, it was left to Zol and Patel to take India to a respectability total.

The pair stitched together a partnership of 82-runs for the sixth wicket before Patel perished in the 39th over.

The tail-enders also could not contribute much to the India total.

India will now take on arch rivals Pakistan in the quarter-final of the U-19 World Cup. (PTI)

Brief Scores: India 204 all-out from 45.1 overs (Vijay Zol 72, Prashant Chopra 58, Smit Patel 30; Chad Soper 5 for 32) bt Papua New Guinea 97 all-out from 31.5 overs (Charles Amini 28, Christopher Kent 27; Ravikant Singh 5 for 21) by 107 runs.

Alister McDermott replaces injured McKay for Pakistan series

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 04:43 AM PDT

Alister McDermott will be replacing injured Clint McKay for the One-Day International series against Pakistan in UAE.

McKay suffered a hamstring injury during the practice match at the Player Camp in Darwin organised by Cricket Australia (CA).

"Clint sustained a hamstring strain during the first intra-squad practice match in Darwin and will not recover in time to play in the one-day component of the series in the UAE. He will be reassessed over the week to determine his availability for the T20 component of the UAE tour against Pakistan," Australia’s physiotherapist Alex Kountouris was quoted as saying by www.icc-cricket.com.

"Alister McDermott, the 21-year-old fast-medium bowler from Queensland, has been selected as McKay’s replacement," National Selector John Inverarity said.

"Alister was impressive in all formats last summer and bowled very well for Australia A against Durham last week. He is a very fit and disciplined young man who bowls with good sense and good control," Inverarity concluded.
