MS Dhoni not invited to Laxman’s party

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 11:51 AM PDT

VVS Laxman, who retired from the game in controversial fashion just ahead of the series against New Zealand even though he was selected for the two Tests, threw a party yesterday for senior members Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Zaheer Khan at his residence in Manikonda in the suburbs of the city.

He, however, chose to ignore Dhoni for the bash.

When Dhoni was asked at the pre-match press conference if he was invited by Laxman, he replied in a clear “No”.

The skipper also chose to pay little attention to the fact that Laxman could not get through to him to inform him about his immediate retirement plans ahead of the series.

“You think it’s a controversy but people who know me always complained that I’m someone who is quite difficult to get hold of. That was one of the reasons why Laxmanbhai could not get hold of me,” Dhoni told reporters ahead of the first cricket Test against New Zealand starting here tomorrow.

“That’s not something new. I have tried to improve but it seems I have not really improved,” he said.

Asked about Laxman’s sudden retirement, pat came Dhoni’s reply: “You need to ask Laxman about it.”

Laxman, who trained hard at the NCA for about four months and also played in two local matches keeping in mind the fresh season ahead, suddenly announced his retirement last week, fuelling speculation that all was not well in the Indian camp.

According to unconfirmed reports, Laxman was handed a two-match ultimatum by one of the selectors. The elegant middle-order batsman, known for his second innings heroics including an epic 281 against Australia in Kolkata, was unhappy about the ultimatum which is believed to be the reason behind his sudden retirement.

Laxman’s retirement came after Dravid bid adieu to the game in March in the aftermath of India’s 0-8 rout in England and Australia. Dhoni said the team would miss the duo but felt that their absence would provide opportunity to youngsters to prove their mettle.

“Definitely these are our two great players and we will miss them on the field. But that’s how it is,” he said on the eve of series opener.

“It’s an opportunity for the youngsters to take up the responsibility in the longer format. We are hoping that the youngsters would grab the opportunity and do well,” he added.

The duo’s absence would mean that India would have to fill in the void at the slip cordon, of which Laxman and Dravid were integral part. But Dhoni hoped that Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli would take up the responsibility.

“We are hoping that we won’t miss them in the slip cordon. When it comes to scoring runs and the experience they had, it would be quite difficult. That’s one area where we will definitely miss them,” the skipper said.

“But we don’t think we will be short of fielders. We have players like Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag who are already fielding at the slips. We have seen the youngsters catch the ball really well. Sehwag most likely will stand at the first slip.”

“With the spinners, there might be a bit of issue. It’s challenging when there’s bounce. We will miss Rahul over there. But let’s look ahead and hope one of the youngsters take this opportunity and take a few good catches there,” he added.

Their confidence at an all time high after the narrow win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the quarter-finals, India would look to carry on the good show against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup on Thursday.

Having started on a poor note, losing their lung opener against the West Indies, India managed bring its campaign back on track with back-to-back victories against Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea before registering a narrow one-wicket win over Pakistan in the last eight round.

However, the batting department remains a major cause of concern for the Indian going into the crucial game. Leaving aside the match against Zimbabwe, where the top-order clicked in unison, the Indian batsmen have been inconsistent so far in the tournament.

Skipper Unmukt Chand has amassed 104 runs from his four outings in the tournament with 78 against Zimbabwe being his best, while Baba Aprajith, before his match-winning half-century against Pakistan, could manage a meagre 43 from three outings.

Opener Prashant Chopra though scored a duck in the last match, has been the most consistent batsman for India with two half-centuries against his name.

Vijay Zol and wicketkeeper-batsman Samit Patel have been pretty decent with the willow in the middle order, but they certainly would need to do better against the Kiwis tomorrow.

India, meanwhile, can boast of a reliable bowling attack, which has been consistent in the tournament so far.

The team is likely to rely heavily on the likes of Kamal Passi, Sandeep Sharma and Ravikant Singh to deliver the the goods once again.

Fielding is another strong point of the Indians and they would definitely try to keep up the good work.

“Sandeep bowled well and Ravikant and Passi were equally good. Fielding was also top notch,” skipper Chand had said after the match against Pakistan.

Like India, New Zealand also managed to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat against in-form West Indies in the quarters.

New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi hit 12 off the last three balls, with a boundary off the last delivery, to see his side home by three wickets against the West Indies.

And the onus would be on Sodhi to come up with yet another magical knock against the Indians.

The Black Caps though will be missing the services of all-rounder Henry Walsh against India after the Wellington-based player had returned home yesterday with an ankle injury. Northern District’s batsman Ben Hyde has joined the team as his replacement.

New Zealand captain Will Young, on the eve of the match, said that India would be a tough side to beat.

“The victory over the West Indies has given the team a lot of belief ahead of the semi-final and the whole group is excited by what lies in front of us,” Young said.

“India is a strong side and it will be a tough match, but at the same time we feel confident that if we play to our potential we can beat them,” he added.

Teams:

India (probable): Prashant Chopra, Unmukt Chand (C), Baba Aparajith, Hanuma Vihari, Vijay Zol, Akshdeep Nath, Smit Patel (wk) Harmeet Singh, Kamal Passi, Ravikant Singh, Kalaria, Sandeep Sharma, Vikas Mishra

New Zealand (probable): Michael Davidson, Joe Carter, Ben Horne, Will Young (C), Robert O’Donnell, Cameron Fletcher, Connor Neynens, Ish Sodhi, Jacob Duffy, Sean Davey, Matthew Quinn,

India were gearing for life without retired batting stars Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman as they begin a two-Test series against New Zealand in Hyderabad on Thursday.

Dravid bid farewell in March and Laxman called it quits last Saturday, leaving Sachin Tendulkar the only surviving veteran of the golden generation of Indian batsman that included Sourav Ganguly.

The main task for India in the busy home season that also features four Tests each against England and Australia is to find replacements for Dravid and Laxman, who had a combined tally of 22,069 Test runs in 298 matches.

The batsmen in contention for the two vacant slots, Cheteshwar Pujara, Suresh Raina and Subramaniam Badrinath, have a combined tally of just 20 Tests. Ajinkya Rahane has yet to debut in the five-day game.

India will also miss Dravid and Laxman in the slips. Both were gifted with safe hands with Dravid taking a Test record 210 catches and Laxman 135.

“It will be tough to replace Rahul and Laxman not only as batsmen, but also as slip catchers,” Tendulkar said ahead of the first Test.

“They were great in that region and to replace them we are going to need someone to be there for an equally long period of time.”

The series against eighth-ranked New Zealand provides the hosts an opportunity to return to winning ways ahead of tougher assignments against England and Australia.

India lost much of their reputation in the past 12 months — and the number one ranking — when they crashed to eight successive overseas Test defeats, four each in England and Australia.

But they remain a force at home because conditions are not as seamer-friendly as in England or Australia and spinners usually call the shots on low, slow pitches.

India will be delighted that New Zealand are without their match-winning spinner Daniel Vettori for the two Tests due to an injury.

The Black Caps need to regroup and put in an improved showing to avoid a second successive Test series defeat, having recently lost both Tests in the West Indies.

“We didn’t play as well as we would have liked (in the West Indies),” Kiwi skipper Ross Taylor said. “India is a familiar place for our batsmen. We have played well here and we are looking forward to this series.

“It is a huge challenge to face the Indians on their home grounds. They are a very tough side in home conditions. We need to have plans in place to counter all possible challenges.”

India have the resources to start the season on a winning note, with openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, and middle-order batsmen Tendulkar and Virat Kohli all capable of putting pressure on the opposition.

Tendulkar, the world’s leading scorer in both Tests and one-dayers with an unprecedented 100 international centuries, was in April nominated to the upper house of parliament, the Rajya Sabha, for his contribution to the nation.

In-form Kohli, who has played only eight Tests, has been growing in confidence since hammering his maiden Test century against Australia at Adelaide this January.

India have effective spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha to test the touring batsmen, the duo having played major roles in their team’s victory in the last home series against the West Indies in November, 2011.

Teams (from):

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt.), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Subramaniam Badrinath, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Pragyan Ojha, Umesh Yadav, Ajinkya Rahane, Piyush Chawla, Ishant Sharma, Suresh Raina.

New Zealand: Ross Taylor (Capt.), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Daniel Flynn, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Tarun Nethula, Jeetan Patel, Tim Southee, Kruger van Wyk, Neil Wagner, Bradley-John Watling, Kane Williamson.
