Preview: England vs Australia 2nd ODI Southampton 2012

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:40 AM PDT

With only 33 deliveries being bowled in the washed out first ODI in Cardiff, England and South Africa will once again be head to head in the second of the five matches in Southampton on Tuesday.

The absence of Kevin Pietersen has come as a new lease of life for Ian Bell, who is trying to resurrect his limited-overs career. His fast-paced 26 on Friday has come on the back a series of good scores (4, 69, 75, 41) in England’s 4-0 whitewash over Australia recently. He has blended his sound technique with attacking instincts so that he can be as good in the shorter versions as he is in Test cricket. With captain Alastair Cook anchoring the innings at one end, the onus will be on Bell to get his side off to a flying start.

Barring Jonathan Trott, who takes a little longer to get his eye in than his peers, the middle order, comprising Ravi Bopara, Eoin Morgan and Craig Kieswetter, is capable of changing gears when required. England also bat deep, with Tim Bresnan, Chris Woakes and Graeme Swann capable of using the long handle.

Dean Elgar, the 25-year-old South Africa batsman, will be watched closely as he could hardly show his skills in his debut game in Cardiff. The left-hander is said to be good technically as his List A record, 2653 runs in 88 matches with a modest average of 39, suggests that he could be a grinder at No. 3.

Like England, South Africa’s middle order too has stroke-makers in the form of captain AB de Villiers, JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis. And just like the hosts, the presence of bowling allrounders – Ryan McLaren, Wayne Parnell and Robin Peterson – gives more depth to the visitors' batting.

With dark clouds once again expected to hover over the Rose Bowl Stadium for the most part on Tuesday, pacers on both the sides are bound to get plenty of assistance. The hosts have had a good run at this venue in the last few matches, winning four of their last five encounters here.

After losing the No. 1 status in Tests, England's numero uno position in ODIs too is on the line if South Africa inflict defeats on the hosts in the upcoming matches. And with weather permitting, a win here will give the visitors headway for the rest of the series.

Probable XIs:
South Africa: Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Dean Elgar, AB de Villiers (capt & wk), JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Ryan McLaren, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Morne Morkel, Lonwabo Tsotsobe

England: Alastair Cook (capt), Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Ravi Bopara, Eoin Morgan, Craig Kieswetter (wk), Tim Bresnan, Chris Woakes, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Steven Finn

Sincere effort will help us beat Australia: Afridi

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:07 AM PDT

Flamboyant Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi has left for the United Arab Emirates with a plea to his team-mates to play as a united outfit against Australia during the one-day series starting on Tuesday.

Insisting that though the conditions in UAE would suit Pakistan more than the Australians, Afridi said still they would have to play well to beat the Australians who are always competitive at any level of cricket.

Afridi, who returned midway from the Sri Lankan Premier League to be with his ailing wife and then left for the UAE to join the national team, told reporters that Pakistan had a good chance of beating the Australians.

“They are a world class side. But we have a good chance as we know the conditions better. All we need is to use our experience there to our advantage. We have a good Twenty20 side as well, and if we play with sincerity, we can win the series,” he said.

The former skipper also said that the players’ participation in SLPL will also prove to be helpful. “It’s a different series but the participation kept the players in the loop. We just need to gel as a team.”

The allrounder, however, admitted he was concerned about his own form and wanted to contribute with both bat and ball against Australia. “I’m aware that my performance is important and I’ll hopefully live up to the expectations, because I know I have an important role to play as a senior member of the side.”

The Pakistan squad, which has already assembled in the UAE, had so far avoided the morning and afternoon practice sessions due to the heat. Pakistan team manager Naved Akram Cheema said it was decided to avoid the day practice. “The heat is unbearable but the temperature gets better in the evening after which we start our practice.”

Mohammad Akram, who was appointed as the national team bowling coach, has also joined the team in Sharjah in time for the first one-dayer.

Interestingly, while the Pakistani players reached Sharjah in batches after appearing in the SLPL, the Aussies have already been in the UAE since August 22nd getting used to the hot weather conditions and the late starts to the matches. They played a late-start match against Afghanistan on Saturday which they won comfortably.

A PCB official said that despite the hot weather and late start, they were expecting good crowds for the one-day and T20 matches. “The late starts were designed to make the weather bearable not only for the players but also for the spectators,” he said.

SLPL will give Sri Lanka advantage in T20 World Cup: Malinga

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 04:50 AM PDT

Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga feels that his side will have a distinct advantage over other countries during next month’s World Twenty20 as most of the island nation’s players have prepared well by competing in the Sri Lanka Premier League.

“SLPL is a good preparation for the Twenty20 World Cup. All the Sri Lankan players know the conditions very well and we have a chance to win the Twenty20 World Cup,” Malinga, who captained Ruhuna Royals in the SLPL, told reporters after his side’s match against Wayamba United.

“It is advantage for us and we are ready for the Twenty20 World Cup,” he added. Ruhuna crashed out of the SLPL after losing to table toppers Wayamba by 12 runs and Malinga said that his players were their best as many youngsters have are not used to such T20 leagues.

“It’s the first year of SLPL and the local players are yet to adjust to T20 leagues. They don’t know how to play T20 cricket. They will learn and get better in future. It’s a good thing for Sri Lanka,” he said. Malinga was not satisfied with his own performance in the SLPL but said that he hoped to do well in the Twenty20 World Cup.

“Definitely, my performance was not up to the mark. But I am hoping that I will do well in the Twenty20 World Cup,” said Malinga who took seven wickets from six matches. Malinga’s side lost four matches out of the six in the league phase of SLPL to end the tournament at fifth spot.

Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene also backed Malinga’s views. “In a way it was a good preparation but I was a bit worried that injuries might happen to the players just so near the Twenty20 World Cup.

“We had some injuries to players but fortunately they will be OK for the T20 World Cup. In all, there were more positives from the SLPL than the negatives,” he said.

Virat Kohli refuses comparison with Sachin Tendulkar

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Sachin Tendulkar sees a shadow of himself in Virat Kohli but the young Indian batsman says he literally worships the iconic cricketer and matching his feats would be nothing short of “mission impossible” for him.

Kohli is the fastest to score 1000 and then 3000 ODI runs and has been India’s most prolific scorer this year with five centuries which led to many comparing him with Tendulkar.

Tendulkar himself considers Kohli a worthy challenger to his incredible record of 100 international centuries.

However, Kohli said there is no comparison between him and his idol.

“I feel really blessed when people start comparing me with Sachin, but I keep myself focused on my performance, and not on such comparisons. I literally worship him, so, I don’t see too much in this comparison,” Kohli said.

“No cricketer has been able to score one hundred centuries like Sachin. It will be a big achievement. I don’t think at all about this, because it increases pressure on you. I keep myself focused on my performance,” he said.

About his selection as vice-captain, Kohli said, it was a pleasant surprise for him and refuted suggestions that he would be eventually replacing Mahendra Singh Dhoni as skipper.

“No, I don’t think so. As captain, he has done a lot for Team India. I learnt a lot as a vice-captain,” he said.

The Delhi batsman disagreed with Sourav Ganguly, who felt that the selectors had taken an emotional decision by rushing Yuvraj Singh into international cricket after illness.

Yuvraj, who has recovered from a rare germ cell cancer, has been included in Indian squad for the World Twenty20 beginning next month in Sri Lanka.

“I don’t think it is an emotional decision. If he says he is confident and fit, then he should be given the chance. It should be a perfect comeback for him,” Kohli said.

“The first match after comeback always makes one nervous. If he performs well in the World Cup, it will be a big boost for Team India. For us, the World Cup is an important tournament,” he added.

Talking about his aggressive attitude on the field, Kohli said it is part of his nature.

“I had this habit from childhood. I never liked being out, whether I am out on zero or I score a ton. I get angry. Occasionally, I shout abuses, but, of late, I am trying to control my aggression, so that my behaviour doesn’t go over the top. I have broken too many bats in my childhood,” he said.

Kohli was also candid enough to admit that he got distracted after playing in the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“Yes, there was a bit of distraction. We had just come from the Under-19 World Cup win. We were playing with foreign (star) players, I did not handle it (attention) well.

“I was even thrown out of the team but my coach advised me concentrate on the game and I got my focus back.”

VVS Laxman finest players of our times: Jayawardene

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 01:30 AM PDT

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene paid tribute to Indian veteran VVS Laxman, who recently retired from international cricket, saying that the game will be poorer without one of the finest players of this generation.

“Laxman was one of the finest players of our times and world cricket will miss him. He has contributed a lot to the game and to his country’s success,” Jayawardene said in a media interaction here at the sidelines of Sri Lanka Premier League.

“I don’t know under what circumstances he retired but every international cricketer will have to take a call finally and he must have thought it was time for him to go. Rahul (Dravid) surprised people when he decided to quit. VVS must also have some plan for his future.

“But you cannot take away his achievements as a cricketer. As a person also he is a fantastic guy,” added the Wayamba United skipper.

Laxman announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, even though he was selected for India’s home Test series against New Zealand, before the first match at his home town Hyderabad.

Shifting to SLPL, Jayawardene was happy with Wayamba’s performance as the team currently tops the points table with five wins from six league matches.

“We knew that SLPL will start small and grow in future. I am happy with the way things have gone this inaugural year.

Some good domestic players are coming out of this tournament.

Young Indian players came through from IPL and I think this will happen in the SLPL also,” he said.

Jayawardene was all praise for young off-spin sensation Akila Dananjaya, who he felt should be fast-tracked into the national team.

“I was surprised by his performance in the SLPL. He is a raw talent and will have to be handled carefully,” said Jayawardene about Dananjaya, who was included in Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 World Cup squad on the strength of his fine bowling performance in the SLPL.

The spinner had so far taken eight wickets from five matches for Wayamba.

Jayawardene, however, indicated that Dananjaya will not be straightway included in the Sri Lankan playing eleven.

“It’s early days for him. We have to see how things go on. We have to see the right time to introduce him.

Fortunately, we have the options in the national side. We have Ajantha Mendis who played in the SLPL after a six months lay off due to injury,” he said.

Kumar Sangakkara was selected in the Sri Lankan Twenty20 World Cup squad subject to his fitness in time and Jayawardene said the wicketkeeper batsman will be fit.

“Sangakkara will start practice next week. We have three weeks before the start of the T20 World Cup and he will be fit for the tournament. We have a reserve wicketkeeper in Dinesh Chandimal in case Sangakkara is not fit,” Jayawardene said.

He also said that the team management has not decided whether he will open the Sri Lankan innings or not.

“We have not decided as yet whether I bat as opener or not. We will sit and decide. But I love to open innings. My conversion rate has been high and at the top of the order you can score big.”(PTI)
