Preview: England vs South Africa 1st ODI, Cardiff, 2012

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 12:32 PM PDT

The game shift from test cricket to one day internationals. South Africa played superb cricket to dethrone England from the no. 1 Test spot. But now its ODI which is a different game all together. England are now ranked no. 1 in ODI’s but will loose that after loosing just one match.

England had a fantastica season so far, winning the 4-0 series against Pakistan, beating West Indies 2-0 and than Australia by 4-0. Alistair Cook, have been moulding the team well in the ODIs and would definitely like to continue throughout the series.

South Africa too has played a good cricket before coming to England. They won the series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka at home. South African bowlers have been in superb form right through the series. They haven’t given England batsman much chances in the series.

South African odi skipper AB de Villiers has hinted his side will target England's batsmen as they look to knock the hosts off the top of the world rankings for the second time this summer. de Villiers think their batsman are on light side and thats where they going to target England.

On the other hand, England skipper is quite happy with the way team has perfomed this year. He said, "To win this series would be a really good effort against a very strong South Africa side. It would cap a really good one-day year for us."

So both captains and team are ready to go for a kill against each other. It going to anither exciting series of ODI to look for.

Stats:

  • In 2008, after South Africa won the Test series 2-1, England took the one-day leg of the tour 4-0. The final match, at Cardiff, was washed out after three overs.
  • If South Africa win this match they will become the first team to hold the No. 1 position in all three formats

South Africa (possible): 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Dean Elgar, 4 AB de Villiers (capt & wk), 5 JP Duminy, 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Robin Petersen, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe

After winning the Test no. 1 team title the focus now shifts to onde-day games. England are no. 1 on the table and have been on a fantastic run in ODI this year. They beat Pakistan 4-0, before beating West Indies 2-0 and another 4-0 against Australia before that. Even though they are performing well loss in one match will take them off the no. 1 spot.

South Africa on the other hand will be high with confidence and momentum after claiming the no 1 test spot. England and South Africa currently hold 1 and 2 spot in ODI rankings. So its rankings going here and there this series. England definitely needs to work a lot to give tough fight in ODI’s.

Sri Lanka announce squad for World Twenty20

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 11:10 AM PDT

Hosts Sri Lanka on Thursday included rank newcomer Akhila Dhananjaya in a 15-man squad for next month’s World Twenty20, while recalling unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis.

Dhananjaya, a 19-year-old offspinner who is yet to play first-class cricket, was selected after taking seven wickets in four matches of the ongoing Sri Lanka Premier League Twenty20 competition.

Mendis, 27, last played for Sri Lanka in South Africa in January, having been sidelined with a back injury for home matches against England, Pakistan and India this year.

Mendis, who bowls leg-spin with a unique finger-flicking action, has taken 40 wickets in 21 Twenty20 internationals. Batsman Dilshan Munaweera and Dhananjaya are the two uncapped players in the squad.

Veteran batsman Kumar Sangakkara and seamer Nuwan Kulasekara, who were injured during last month’s limited-over series against India, were included subject to passing fitness tests, Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.

Sri Lanka are drawn with South Africa and Zimbabwe in group C of the preliminary league, with two teams advancing to the next round. The hosts take on Zimbabwe in the opening match of the tournament in Hambantota on Sept 18.

Sri Lanka’s squad: Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Angelo Mathews, Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lahiru Thirimanne, Jeevan Mendis, Dilshan Munaweera, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Ajantha Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Shaminda Eranga, Akhila Dhananjaya.

Cheteshwar Pujara ton guides India to 307 for 5 on Day 1

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 05:55 AM PDT

Cheteshwar Pujara dominated the Indian batting with an unbeaten 119 as they finished at 307/5 on Day 1 of the first Test against New Zealand at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday.

Scorecard | Watch Day 1 Highlights

Pujara shared an unbeaten 47-run stand with skipper MS Dhoni (29*) to survive the last half an hour of the day after Kiwis took the new ball.

Pujara notched up his maiden Test hundred to lead Indian first innings. Pujara, who played his last Test in January 2011, made a remarkable comeback to Test cricket. Pujara smacked 14 boundaries and a six in his century knock that came in 169 balls.

India suffered another blow in quick succession after losing Virat Kohli when Kiwi spinner Jeetan Patel struck to dismiss Suresh Raina and reduced India to 260/5.

Pujara held the one end after being promoted to number three and added 125 runs with Virat Kohli for the fourth wicket to frustrate the visitors.

Chris Martin broke the crucial century stand by dismissing Kohli to give New Zealand much needed breakthrough soon after the tea.

Kohli complimented his partner by scoring a half-century to consolidate India against the Kiwis. He reached his fourth Test fifty in 79 balls, smashing seven boundaries.

India were 182/3 at tea with Pujara and Kohli going well. Pujara hit a patient half-century to steady the Indian first innings.

Pujara’s second Test fifty came after Trent Boult clean bowled Sachin Tendulkar with a superb delivery.

The delivery came in sharply and stayed a little low to sneak through the gap between bat and pad to uproot the middle stump.

India went to lunch at 97/2 with Pujara and Tendulkar at the crease on 12.

Doug Bracewell gave New Zealand the second breakthrough when he had Virender Sehwag caught by Martin Guptill at second slip.

Sehwag hit 9 fours in his 41-ball 47 before falling to Bracewell.

India lost their first wicket when Trent Boult induced an edge off Gautam Gambhir’s bat.

Gambhir (22) tried to play the ball down to third man without moving his feet and ended up giving a simple catch to keeper Kruger van Wyk.

Earlier, Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat.

The Indian team is returning to Test action after a gap of seven months, which was preceded by two disastrous Test series.

After being drubbed 0-4 in England that stripped India off their No. 1 Test status, an identical rout followed in Australia.

Having slipped to No. 5 in less than a year’s time in Test rankings, Indian youngsters would be keen bring the team back on track during the home stretch before next year’s South Africa tour.

World No. 8 New Zealand are excepted to give a perfect chance to India seniors to get over the England and Australia blues.

But Indians will look to relish the home conditions and would be upbeat to take on the Black Caps, who have come here after demoralising back-to-back defeats against South Africa (0-1 at home) and the West Indies.

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium strip promises to offer something for the spinners, especially after it was criticised when it last hosted the same opponents in November 2010 that saw a drab draw with Harbhajan Singh slamming an unbeaten century.

Dareen Bravo returns in West Indies quad for T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 02:36 AM PDT

The return of left-handed stroke-maker Darren Bravo is the only difference in an otherwise predictable 15-man West Indies squad for next month’s Twenty20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

The stylish 23-year-old, who has not played for West Indies since limping out of the tour of England in June with a groin injury, joins the squad announced Wednesday with older brother Dwayne Bravo as skipper Darren Sammy’s deputy.

Exciting all-rounder Andre Russell has also been recalled after missing the T20 doubleheader against New Zealand in Florida through injury, reports CMC.

The right-armer, however, took ten wickets in the subsequent five-match one-day series and had unbeaten knocks of 59 and 42.

He will partner with Ravi Rampaul and Fidel Edwards to form the pace attack of which Sunil Narine is expected to be the mainstay with his beguiling off-spin.

Narine dominated the Florida T20s with seven wickets and then followed up with 13 in the one-day series against the Black Caps.

Leg-spinner and fellow Trinidadian Samuel Badree, who made his debut in the Florida doubleheader, is the other specialist spinner in the squad.

Meanwhile, flamboyant Chris Gayle will head the batting which also boasts IPL stars Kieron Pollard, Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Smith.

West Indies are in Group B alongside Australia and Ireland, and are tipped to advance to the Super Eight second stage of the tournament, starting Sept 18. The final is on Oct 7.

Squad:

India should also tour Pakistan: Shahid Afridi

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 01:32 AM PDT

He is looking forward to Pakistan touring India later this year, but flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi feels the resumption of bilateral cricket ties between the two countries can be a complete success only if the Indians also visit his nation.

After returning home from Colombo on Wednesday, Afridi said he was very happy to see that bilateral cricket ties between Pakistan and India would finally resume at the end of the year.

“It is good news that bilateral ties will be resumed. It is good that Pakistan will be touring India this year and it should be a big series but I think India must also tour Pakistan as this would only further relations between the two nations,” Afridi said.

The all-rounder returned midway from the Sri Lanka Premier League, where he was playing for the Rahuna Royals, to be with his wife who is reported to be unwell.

“It is very important that Pakistan and India play against each other regularly because our matches also have a profound impact on world cricket,” he explained.

“I say India should also tour Pakistan because this will also help Pakistan in its bid to convince other teams to come and play in our country despite their security concerns,” he added.

Pakistan is scheduled to tour India in late December this year to play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches.

The series will be the first between the two countries since 2007. (PTI)

India U19 beat New Zealand U19 by 9 runs to reach U19 World Cup Finals

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 01:11 AM PDT

India relied on spinners Baba Aparajith and Harmeet Singh to pull off a thrilling 9-run victory over New Zealand and cruise into the final of the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup on Thursday.

Scorecard | Watch Highlights

Defending a modest total of 209, Indian bowlers maintained their consistency throughout as they restricted New Zealand to 200 for nine in their 50 overs to set up a title clash against Australia on Sunday.

Needing 18 off last over, medium pacer Sandeep Sharma kept his cool as he gave away only nine runs as India made it to summit clash quite comfortably in the end at the Tony Ireland stadium.

Young Tamil Nadu lad Aparajith got his second successive man-of-the-match award for his all-round show as he scored 44 before taking the important wicket of Robert O’Donell.

This is India U-19 team’s fourth appearance in the final of the tournament having won the 2000 and 2008 editions while they were runners-up in 2006.

A target of 210 was never a tall-order for the Black Caps colts but all-rounder Aparajith (1/29) and the young sardar from Mumbai Harmeet (2/30) stifled the set New Zealand pair of Cam Fletcher (53) and O’Donell (29) in the middle overs to set it up for the Indians.

The duo gave away only 59 runs in the 20 overs between them and also shared three wickets. The highlight certainly were the Batting Powerplay overs where two of them gave away only 14 runs in the five overs.

While New Zealand lost the first four wickets for 63 runs, Carter-O’Donell duo put on 56 runs for the fifth wicket without much fuss. It looked as if New Zealand were cruising along towards victory before Harmeet-Aparajith applied brakes on scoring. Back to-back maidens in the 34th and 35th overs suddenly increased the pressure on the Kiwis.

As the pressure mounted, O’Donell closed the face of his bat to an off-break from Aparajith to offer a simple return catch as India made decisive inroads.

Indian bowlers have done a good job in the tournament and even on Thursday the pace trio of ‘U-19 veteran’ Sandeep Sharma (2/36), Kamal Passi (1/48) and Ravi Kant Singh (2/49) complemented the effort of their spinners.

The trio bowled well within themselves with Ravi Kant again producing an inspirational delivery. Connor Neynes (14) was yorked by the young Bengal pacer which certainly was the best delivery of the match.

Earlier, India’s middle-order frittered away the good start provided by the top half as the team posted a disappointing 209 for nine.

Opener Prashant Chopra was the top-scorer for the Indians with a patient 104-ball 52, followed by No 3 Aparajith who added 44 runs to the total.

Skipper Unmukt Chand also did his bit with 31 runs off 44 deliveries but the rest of the line-up let the team down against a disciplined bowling effort by the New Zealand team.

For the Kiwis, left-arm spinner Ben Horne was the top wicket-taker, picking up three for 23 in six overs, while medium pacer Matthew Quinn managed a couple of scalps.

It was a decent start to the proceedings for the Indians as Unmukt and Prashant put on 51 runs for the first wicket before the former made his way back after becoming medium pacer Connor Neynens’ only victim of the match.

Unmukt’s knock included five hits to the fence. Next man in, Aparajith took hardly any time to settle down and rotated the strike with ease.

Aparajith and Prashant combined to add 81 runs before the latter departed, caught one-handed by Kiwi skipper Will Young at mid on off Ed Nuttall’s bowling.

Prashant struck five boundaries and a six during his innings. Aparajith departed a couple of overs later, his 61-ball innings ended by Indian-origin spinner Ish Sodhi.

The rest of the Indian line-up failed to make notable contributions as the team were restricted to a disappointing total.

Live 1st Test: India wins toss, elects to bat against New Zealand

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 09:34 PM PDT

Toss: India have won the toss and elected to bat

Dhoni: The wicket will assist spinners later on. The last game we played here was a draw. It’s good to see a wicket like this in the sub-continent. There is something for the batsmen and the bowlers. The break helped us, especially in the fitness aspect. We’ll miss Rahul Dravid and Laxman. They’re legends of the game. Rahane, Ishant, Piyush and Badri are missing this game.

Taylor: The pitch is hard. We have played here in the IPL and seen that the wicket is hard. It was a disappointing tour of the West Indies but we had 1 and a half weeks to get over it. Chris Martin, Jeetan Patel and Franklin come in to the side.

Pitch report: It’s evenly rolled, but it’s very dry, with no grass whatsoever. We expect the pitch to take turn as the Test match progresses. The pitch has a bit of dampness, which will aid faster bowlers initially. With the humidity around, it might swing, but it will be tough conditions for the Kiwis.

Pujara: It has been a long time since I played Tests. I am feeling fresh and ready to go. I do not want to disclose where I will bat but I know which position I will be batting. We need to do well in this match and we have been waiting for it.
