South Africa vs England 3rd Test Post Match Presentation Lord’s 2012

Graeme Smith: Finger nails have been short all series. It was a tough Test match. England played with a lot of freedom. We had to set up the game and work hard. Prior and Swann put us under pressure. I stayed with the belief that we could win. We always knew that we had the new ball. Vernon got it perfectly. I think we were able to post totals and build partnerships which allowed our bowlers to bowl with a bit of freedom. We caught well. It has been a long 2 months to be mentally focused and play in England. There have been quality fast bowlers in South Africa, Kallis adds a key value to the team. (On Smith’s T shirt is written: Will miss u Bouch). This Test win is dedicated to Mark Boucher. We need to have a strong base so that when the wind blows, we are firm. The boys have built a formidable unit. Australia is next and they will be a tough side to tackle.

Strauss: Outstanding Test match played by both teams. The spirit that the guys showed was brilliant. South Africa was the better side in all the games. Closer you go, more pressure you are under. Prior, Bairstow and Swann batted really well. This is how I expected all the games to be. Bairstow played outstandingly well. He displayed a calm exterior. I’d be delighted for him if he could go on to get bigger scores. We have got some tough times. When you are number 1, people try to gun you down. It’d be a shame to give that mace to South Africa, but they deserve it. When you become number 1, you cannot rest on your laurels. You cannot have a bad day. Our batting against a very good bowling attack was not really good. You have to look at the likes of Bairstow and Taylor to understand the talent England cricket has. Hope I can lead England to the number 1 spot again.

Hashim Amla: It was a close game. There were a few emotions running high on the field. Vernon bowled fantastically to win it for us. Moments like this make cricket what it is. It is a great advertisement for Test cricket. The triple hundred is a bit of a blur. Fortunate to start the series so well and I could end it on a good note as well. The wicket was good to bat on. It had its moments when the ball moved about.

South Africa player of the series is Hashim Amla

Matt Prior: It was set out for me to launch. To not get over the line is disappointing. The wicket in Lord’s stays pretty good all the 5 days. Bairstow played well. We tried to carry on and take the game as deep as possible. Strange few emotions (on the dismissal off the no-ball). It wasn’t to be our day today. Boycott came and spoke to me today and told me to leave the balls of Philander. South Africa played brilliantly all series. We all know that we haven’t been up to the standards in the field. We have let slip our catches. We put the vital catches down. We have to go back to the drawing board and get back the number 1 spot. I would love to be in the T20 squad for the World Cup.

England player of the series is Matt Prior

Vernon Philander: We always knew that two balls in the right area would do it for us. We stayed calm. All the hard work and preparation has come through. I enjoyed playing at Somerset. It was a good experience for me.

Vernon Philander is the Man of the Match. He picked up 7 wickets in the match.

South Africa beat England in Lord’s Test to become no. 1 Test team

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 10:52 AM PDT

England fought valiantly to attain the target of 346 on the last day but Philander’s five-wicket haul scuppered their chase as South Africa won the third Test by 51 runs to take series 2-0.

The home team, chasing an improbable 346 to square the series at 1-1 and avoid losing top spot in the world rankings to South Africa, need 66 more runs from 25 overs.

Scorecard | Watch Day 5 Highlights

Jonathan Bairstow inspired an England recovery in a last-gasp effort to prevent South Africa dethroning his team but his doughty efforst came to an end when he was cleaned up by Imran Tahir after lunch on the fifth day of the third Test at Lord’s.

South Africa-born Jonathan Trott, having started Monday on six not out, went on to complete a 126-ball fifty with six fours and compiled a fine partnership with Bairstow. Earlier in the day, Vernon Philander, who had removed England captain Andrew Strauss, in his 100th Test, and fellow left-handed opener Alastair Cook on late Sunday to reduce the hosts to 16 for two at the fourth day’s close, struck again early Monday when he had Ian Bell caught, at the second attempt, for his overnight score of four by South Africa captain Graeme Smith at first slip.

England were 34 for 3 at that point. The last thing England needed then was a run out but confusion between Trott and James Taylor over a fourth run saw the latter dismissed after Hashim Amla’s throw was relayed by Dale Steyn to wicket-keeper AB de Villiers. Trott, having struck two fours in successive balls off Jacques Kallis, almost fell to the pace bowling all-rounder next delivery when, on 33, he edged an attempted cover drive and Jacques Rudolph dropped the tough third slip chance. Bairstow showed his class with several boundaries off fast bowler Steyn, the best a straight drive down the ground. And leg-spinner Imran Tahir also got the Bairstow treatment, lofted straight and swept for two fours in successive deliveries.

South Africa, 1-0 up in this series after an innings win at The Oval was followed by a draw at Headingley, only had to avoid defeat at Lord’s to replace England at the top of the International Cricket Council’s world Test rankings.
History was against England as the most they had ever made in the fourth innings to win a Test was the 332 for seven they posted against Australia at Melbourne back in 1928/29.

Mickey Arthur to miss Australia ODI series against Pakistan

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Australian coach Mickey Arthur will miss the one-day component of their upcoming tour to the United Arab Emirates to focus on preparing for the Twenty20 World Cup.

Australia face emerging cricketing nation Afghanistan in a single one-dayer in Sharjah on August 25 before three matches against Pakistan, with fielding coach Steve Rixon taking the reins.

Arthur will return for the Twenty20 series against the Pakistanis, which follows the one-day matches.

“We have a very important T20 tournament coming up,” Arthur said of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka from September 18.

“I’ll spend the time away from the team to really hone our T20 plans and study the opposition ahead of the World Twenty20.

“We have great experience and harmony within our support staff group now and I know that Steve will do a terrific job in partnership with Justin Langer and Ali de Winter while I’m away,” he added. (AFP)

India beat Pakistan to reach semis of Under-19 World Cup 2012

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 02:13 AM PDT

Baba Aparajith scored a gritty half-century and Vijay Zol scored 36, as India registered a thrilling one-wicket win against Pakistan to qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing Under 19 World Cup in Australia on Monday.

Chasing a modest total of 137 to win, India wobbled during their chase and were staring at defeat before Sandeep Sharma and Harmeet Singh teamed up to get 10 runs for the 10th wicket.

Scorecard | Watch Highlights

India suffered a batting collapse early on as they were reduced to 8-3, before Aparajith and Zol joined forces to bail their side out of trouble.

Aparajith and Zol added 66 runs for the fourth wicket.

For Pakistan, Zia-Ul-Haq bagged three wickets for 23 and Azizullah claimed 3 for 30 off their 10 overs.

Ehsan Adil, too chipped in with the ball and claimed two for 25 off his 10 overs.

Earlier in the first innings, Sandeep nd Ravikant Singh claimed three wickets each as Pakistan were bowled out for 136 in their Under 19 World Cup quarterfinal match against India at the Ireland Stadium in Townsville on Monday.

Babar Azam struck 50 off 109 balls and four boundaries, and Ehsan Adil produced a gritty 35, as the Pakistan batting order stuttered against a disciplined Indian bowling attack.

Sandeep claimed three wickets for 24 runs off his 8.1 overs, while Ravikant once again impressed with the figures of 3 for 43 off his 10 overs.

As many as four Pakistan batsmen were dismissed for a duck, after skipper Azam won the toss and elected to bat first.

Pakistan's 136 came from 45.1 overs.

Kamal Passi, who shone with the figures of 6-23 against Zimbabwe in the previous game, made Pakistan batsmen struggle as they could manage only 19 runs off his 10 overs.

Passi also claimed the wicket of Zafar Gohar.

India U19 vs Pakistan U19 Post Match Presentation Under-19 World Cup 2012

Posted: 20 Aug 2012 01:10 AM PDT

Baba Aparajith: In the team meetings, everyone told us to think that today would be our day. I was batting well and we were setting small targets. We were doing it well and I played a rash shot. Harmeet and Sandeep should have been given the MoM as they took us to victory.

Baba Aparajith is the MoM for his all-round display.

Chand: I was very nervous. I am still shivering. This is one of the best finishes. Sandeep bowled really well. Ravikant and Passi bowled superbly. Our fielding was top notch. It was Aparajith’s day today and he contributed all around. It would have been good if he stayed unbeaten. It is always good to play against Pakistan and I wish them luck.

Babar Azam: I am proud of my team. We put up a low score but I am glad the bowlers put up such a fight. Sandeep bowled well. Our bowlers tried hard. I might have made a mistake in not keeping one pace bowler towards the end.
