AB de Villiers will lead South Africa at the ICC World Twenty20 to be held in Sri Lanka next month, while the Proteas women’s team will be captained by Mignon du Preez, CSA announced here on Thursday. The announcement marks the return of De Villiers, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel to the men’s squad after being rested for the triangular T20 series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in June.

“We have had basically the same squad together for the past year and many of them also produced stand-out performances at the Indian Premier League (IPL),” said CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson, adding that they were unable to consider Marchant de Lange because of injury.

“The Proteas will also have an excellent preparation for the World Twenty20 by finishing the England tour with three matches there, even though, they may be playing on a different surface to that they will find in Sri Lanka,” Hudson said.
CSA National Proteas coach for women, Yashin Ebrahim, meanwhile, announced that Preez would lead the 14-member squad in the competition.

“du Preez will be backed by some fine individual performers like vice-captain, Trisha Chetty, who is one of the best wicketkeepers in the world and is also ranked among the top-10 specialist batsmen, Shandre Fritz who is our only player to have scored a century in this format and Sunette Loubser, last year’s SA Women’s Cricketer of the Year,” Ebrahim said.

Men’s squad: AB de Villiers (capt), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Johan Botha, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Jacques Kallis, Richard Levi, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Womens’ squad: Mignon du Preez (capt), Trisha Chetty, Susan Benade, Dinesha Devnarain, Shandre Fritz, Alison Hodgkinson, Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Marcia Letsoalo, Sunette Loubser, Sune Luus, Yolandi van der Westhuizen, Dane van Niekerk.

Rohit Sharma has to transform his potential into performance: Vengsarkar

Struggling batsman Rohit Sharma on Thursday got the backing of former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar for his capabilities but the ex-cricketer said the youngster needed to transform his potential into runs to cement his place in the national team.

“There is no doubt Rohit has tremendous potential but he has to score runs. He has to transform his potential into performance which is not happening,” said Vengsarkar, who is known to be a stern supporter of the 25-year-old Mumbai right-hander.

“He is a fine player and there is no question about his abilities but he has failed for too long,” added the former chief selector.

Despite repeated opportunities, Rohit has not been able to cement his place in Indian team and hit a new low in the just-concluded tour of Sri Lanka where he managed a dismal 13 runs from five ODIs, the least by a recognised Indian batsman in a series of five matches or more.

On the contrary, Tiwary, who just got two games in the series, justified his selection by scoring a half-century in the fifth ODI and also bagged four wickets.

“Tiwary has done extremely well and I think he should get more opportunities,” Vengsarkar said during the unveiling of a survey report — “TenVicks Report: Measuring India’s Cheer Quotient” here.

Vengsarkar refused to be drawn into a debate on whether VVS Laxman should be picked tomorrow by the selection committee at Mumbai for the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand while maintaining that age should not be held against the Hyderabad batsman.

“I am not a selector now, but what I have heard he has scored a 100 recently in some domestic game. I believe in form and fitness. I am not bothered how old a player is,” he added.

The 38-year-old Laxman’s fitness and running between the wickets have come under the scanner time and again. He also failed to put up an impressive display with the bat in the in the last eight Tests, scoring just 337 runs in 16 innings.

Chris Gayle was ruled out of the inaugural Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL) tournament which begins on Saturday.

The West Indies opener was signed by Uva Next franchise but will not participate in this season due to a groin injury.

“Of course it’s a blow to lose Gayle, but we are very happy with the team that we’ve got and we’re still going to win the competition,” said Tushar Bedi, CEO of the Uva Next franchise.

Gayle had been suffering from groin injury and it aggravated further in the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand.

According to reports in a cricket website, West Indies Cricket Board does not want to take any chances with World Cup T20 scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka in September.
