Kevin Pietersen ton boosts England on Day 3 of 2nd Test against South Africa

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 01:30 PM PDT

Kevin Pietersen hit a spectacular century to break a stranglehold by the South African bowlers and raise England’s hopes on the third day of the second Test at Headingley on Saturday.

Pietersen launched a savage assault after tea, hitting 149 not out as England reached 351 for 5 at the close, 68 behind South Africa’s first innings total of 419. South Africa suffered a further blow shortly before the close when captain Graeme Smith had to be helped from the field after injuring his left knee in chasing a ball to the boundary.

Until Pietersen cut loose, South Africa had been ahead in a battle of attrition as England struggled to 173 for 4 at less than three runs an over. Alastair Cook (24), Andrew Strauss (37) and Jonathan Trott (35) all fell to disciplined bowling after lengthy but not particularly productive stays at the crease. South Africa struck what seemed a crucial blow shortly before the tea interval when Ian Bell was caught at first slip off Jacques Kallis for 11, leaving Pietersen to rebuild the innings together with new cap James Taylor, who scored his first runs in Test cricket when he drove legspinner Imran Tahir past mid-off for four in the final over before tea.

The match changed dramatically after the break. South Africa brought back fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel to put pressure on the diminutive Taylor but it was Pietersen who took charge, slamming 26 runs off 11 balls in a thrilling passage of play. In a continuation of the duel between the two players in the first Test at the Oval, Morkel sent down a series of bouncers, bowling from around the wicket and challenging Pietersen to take on two fielders on the legside boundary.

Pietersen was dropped at short leg by Hashim Amla off Morkel on 52 but then thrashed the next two balls to the midwicket boundary. With Pietersen in such dominant mood, Taylor was able to feel his way into Test cricket in a supporting role and batted soundly as he made 34 in a fifth wicket partnership of 147 before being bowled by Morkel. Pietersen reached a relatively conventional fifty off 90 balls with nine fours – although it was already by far the most aggressive innings played by an England batsman – then raced to his century off another 52 deliveries with eight more boundaries.

When he was on 85 he became the eighth English batsman to score 7000 Test runs. His 21st Test century – his third against South Africa – came in the first over with the second new ball. After a brief period of consolidation he launched another burst of scoring, hitting 22 off 11 balls, including a straight drive which nearly decapitated Steyn and a dismissive swat to midwicket in Steyn’s next over followed by a straight six off the next ball.

Strauss and Cook had to combat some hostile bowling in a morning’s play curtailed by rain, which stopped play for an hour and a half. Philander made the breakthrough when Cook played around a straight delivery and was given out leg before wicket by umpire Steve Davis. Cook unsuccessfully sought a review which showed the ball was hitting his middle stump. Strauss was caught behind off Steyn after a two-and-half hour stay when he pushed at a ball from the fast bowler to edge a straightforward catch.

Trott batted for two hours before losing patience and flashing at Steyn to be caught at first slip. Pietersen showed attacking intent from the start of his innings but when Bell was out to a loose shot South Africa were in control and must have harboured hopes of clinching the three-match series after winning the first Test by an innings and 12 runs. Two hours later the game had changed dramatically.

India rise to 2nd spot in ODI rankings with 4-1 finish against Sri Lanka

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 11:45 AM PDT

Irfan Pathan claimed five wickets and contributed valuable 29 runs as India managed a 20-run win over Sri Lanka in the dead fifth rubber to complete a 4-1 series drubbing, on Saturday.

India posted a challenging 294 for seven after electing to bat and completed the win by bowling out the hosts for 274 in 45.4 overs at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Scorecard | Watch Highlights

India had lost the second ODI in Hambantota by nine wickets but were dominant in all the other matches.

Opener Gautam Gambhir (88), Manoj Tiwary (65) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (58) scored half-centuries while Rohit Sharma (4) failed yet again on Saturday.

Dhoni along with Pathan (29 off 28) plundered 77 runs in just 9.5 overs before falling to Lasith Malinga in the penultimate over of India innings.

Later, the pace trio of Pathan (5-60), Ashok Dinda (2-55) and Zaheer Khan (1-53) ripped apart the Sri Lankan top-order, tilting the scale in favour of India.

Courtesy this win, India have now claimed the second spot in the ODI rankings behind Australia after starting the series in the fourth position. Both India and Australia now have 119 rating points, followed by South Africa (118).

Lahiru Thirimanne, who came to bat at number three after the fall of opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (0), was the top scorer for the hosts with his fighting 81-run knock.

Run-rate was never a problem with Sri Lanka but they struggled to keep wickets in hand as half of the batting line-up was resting in pavilion within 16 overs.

Thirimanne and Jeevan Mendis (72) did stage a fightback for their side with a gritty 102-run partnership for the sixth wicket in 20.4 overs.

Thirimanne’s excellent innings met with a tragic end when he was run out in the 36th over.

Mendis kept fighting and brought his team closer to the target but once Pathan dismissed him and Thisara Perera (18) in the 43rd over, an Indian win looked very much on the cards.

It was Pathan who dealt the first two blows by removing Dilshan and Upul Tharanga (31). Before being caught by Ajinkya Rahane, Tharanga batted superbly in the company of Thirimanne as the duo put on 45 runs for the second wicket.

In a span of 30 balls, Sri Lanka lost Dinesh Chandimal (8), skipper Angelo Mathews (13) and Chamara Kapugedara (9) to be reeling at 102 for five.

Earlier, Dhoni smashed a 38-ball 58 after Gambhir and Tiwary put India on course with a 110-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Dhoni was ruthless against the Lankan bowlers, hitting them all across the park, while bringing up his 50 off just 34 balls with a huge six over midwicket off Thisara Perara.

With his three wickets, Malinga was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, who had rested captain Mahela Jayawardene and Rangana Herath.

Indian openers in the absence of rested Virender Sehwag, started off sedately with the first boundary of the innings coming in the fourth over — Rahane driving Parera through the covers.

Rahane, who was playing in his first match of the series, fell for just nine runs to an incoming delivery from Parera.

Gambhir along with Virat Kohli (23) combined together to add 48 runs for the second wicket before Nuwan Pradeep brought one in to the right-hander to have him trapped.

Sharma’s misery with the bat continued as he became Pradeep’s next victim — the ball angling in and moving out after pitching to take the off stump of the Mumbaikar, who was looking to play towards the leg side.

With the scoreboard reading 87 for three at the end of the 13th over, it was left to Gambhir and Tiwary to resurrect the Indian innings.

Both the batsmen played positively, dispatching anything loose coming their way. Tiwary, who was just playing in his second match of the series, in particular, was aggressive as he regularly stepped out against the Sri Lankan speedsters.

The Bengal batsman was though lucky to complete his half century, as he inside-edged an incoming ball from Perera at 46 to the wicketkeeper, but the umpire ruled him not out.

Tiwary finally brought up his 50 in style flicking Pradeep through the square-leg fence.

The 26-year-old survived another confident shout from the Lankan’s off the bowling of Sachithra Senanayake before falling prey to a short-pitched delivery from Malinga.

Sri Lankan pace spearhead Malinga got Suresh Raina in the next ball to help the hosts make a strong comeback. Gambhir was the next to go with India still having to play 11 overs. But Dhoni utilised the remaining overs to the hilt.

5th ODI : India vs Sri Lanka Post Match Presentation #IndvSL 2012

MS Dhoni: his was a very good wicket to bat on. Gautam batted well, we had a very good platform. The last 10 overs we had to get a fair amount of runs, we knew it will get a bit easy to bat on in the second half. Most of the Sri Lankan fields are quite big, if it’s not needed it is advisable to not go for the big shots. This outfield was quick and we could use the pace of the bowler. If one of me and Irfan got out, we may not have got to that score. So we played safe for a while. We still need to improve, not only in the bowling but also the batting. The guy who was set usually carried it forward but it’s important that we dictate the bowling and score 15 runs more than the par score. If we are playing with part-time bowlers, we need to those 10 to 15 runs. The [limping] is not a major concern, it’s not a big injury. Hopefully I’ll play the next game.

Angelo Mathews: Encouraging to see Thirimanne and Mendis taking on the challenge. Unfortunately we fell short by 20 runs, we gave away some runs on the field. The Indians have a very good batting line-up. But we did too many mistakes on specific days and that was the result of our downfall. Mendis works really hard and is a wonderful asset for us. We’ve got the SLPL before the World T20.

Virat Kohli is the Man of the Series

Irfan Pathan: God’s grace. Was bowling well throughout the series. Had too many bad deliveries today but got five wickets. The batting gave me a lot of confidence, it came at the right time, in Premadasa and here. The ball does swing with the humid conditions, and with the two new balls it does help swing the ball. It’s a great feeling.

Irfan Pathan is the Man of the Match

Pitch report: It’s a sensational track (according to Arun Lal). It looks a bit darker than normal. The sun has not been that intense so there is some moisture on the track. The first ten overs of either innings will be tough, but it’s a good batting track.

Dhoni: Looks like good wicket and the ball will swing in the second half, so the fast bowlers will come into play. Sehwag is not fit. Rahane is in and will open. The rest of the side is same.

Mathews: It’s going to be a new experience and a challenge, hope to enjoy it. I have my own ideas about captaincy but I’ll get some help from Mahela as well. Senanayake and Kapugedera are in, Herath misses out.

Mahela is not playing. Angelo Mathews will lead Sri Lanka.

World XI team tour of Pakistan postponed again

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 02:18 AM PDT

A planned tour by a World XI to Pakistan to play two Twenty20 matches in an effort to revive international cricket in the country has been postponed for the second time this year.

According to the organisers, the World XI was supposed to play the two matches in Karachi on August 5 and 6 at the National Stadium but these matches have now been postponed to October.

Dr Mohammad Ali Shah, the minister for sports in Sindh province and a well known cricket administrator and organiser, who was behind the World XI matches said that the postponement had come because of the unavailability of Pakistani players.

“We want the full Pakistan team to play these two games, which are very important for Pakistan cricket. And the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has informed us that this can only be possible after the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka,” Shah said.

“Intikhab Alam from the PCB called me up and informed me that if we went ahead with the matches as planned on August 5 and 6, some players might not be available to play the two matches,” he explained.

The organisers have invited former stars or recently retired players from Sri Lanka, South Africa and other nations for the matches that include players like Sanath Jayasuriya, Justin Kemp, Nicky Boje, Andre Nel, Tatenda Taibu and others.

Initially the organisers had announced they would be holding the matches in May but the PCB stepped in and refused to give permission to its players for the matches as it said Dr Shah and his organising committee had gone and decided everything without seeking clearance from the board.

But after Shah met with the PCB Chairman, Zaka Ashraf there was a patch up and the board agreed to give permission for the matches and also help Shah organise these games by releasing members of the national team.

But while Shah claimed the matches would be held in October, cricket analysts believed it is highly unlikely any foreign player would want to tour Pakistan at that time because of security concerns.

“The organisers might be able to convince retired players to come and play in T20 matches but how many players they can attract and pay for and how they will provide security is another question,” a former player said. No Test playing nation has visited Pakistan since March 2009 when militants attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore.

New Zealand hold edge after Day 2 of 2nd Test against West Indies

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 10:13 PM PDT

West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels struck a brilliant 123 on Friday but New Zealand’s seamers set up a healthy first innings lead on a gripping second day of the second Test at Sabina Park.

West Indies, 11 for 0 overnight in reply to New Zealand’s first innings total of 260, were bowled out for 209 midway through the final session. The visitors stretched their overall advantage to 110 by the close, reaching 59 for 2 in the second innings.

Martin Guptill top scored with 42 while offspinner Narsingh Deonarine (2 for 3) revived the hosts with two late scalps. Earlier, Samuels’ fourth Test century was decorated with 15 fours and four sixes and spanned 169 balls and 264 minutes.

Captain Darren Sammy was the next best West Indian with 32 off 29 balls. Doug Bracewell claimed 3 for 46 while left-arm seamer Trent Boult (3 for 58) and Neil Wagner (2 for 24) were also magnificent. The fourth member of the seam quartet, Tim Southee, also supported with 2 for 70.

New Zealand started the day brightly as Boult prized out Kieran Powell in the fourth over without addition to the total. Left-hander Powell (10) dangled a tentative defensive stroke and edged straight to Dean Brownlie at third slip.

Assad Fudadin got off the mark with an edge through second slip but didn’t get much further, Boult eventually gaining an lbw verdict via the TV umpire after Marais Erasmus had initially ruled not out.

Fudadin (5) played across the line of on that shaped inwards and was plumb in front at 17 for 2. Chris Gayle, one of the most destructive batsman in the modern game, struggled for fluency. Southee should have claimed the big Jamaican on 5, but wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk left a thick edge and Ross Taylor’s late lunge low to his right at first slip was unsuccessful.

The chance did not prove costly as Wagner struck in his second over, Gayle fending an ugly back foot stroke to backward point after scoring 8 off 55 balls.

Samuels and veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul took lunch at 62 for 3 but the West Indies continued to lose wickets regularly after resumption. Southee claimed Chanderpaul (9) at 82 for 4, the left-hander edging a tentative prod low to first slip.
One run later, Boult further dented the hosts with the scalp of Deonarine for a duck, another edge found and wicketkeeper van Wyk this time snapping up a low catch. Denesh Ramdin helped the West Indies pass three figures, but after scoring 15 off 26 balls, he fended Wagner to gully at 113 for 6.

Samuels played some majestic strokes as he arrived at his half century off 93 balls with his ninth four. Sammy dominated a seventh wicket stand of 49 with Samuels, slamming six boundaries before the skipper was lbw to Southee, umpire Paul Reiffel’s not out verdict overturned on the Decision Review System.

Samuels tried to rally the tail after tea, but the lower order showed little resistance. Sunil Narine (1) sparred at Bracewell and edged to second slip where Guptill claimed an easy catch.

Five runs later, there was a similar result as Kemar Roach, roughed up by some short bowling, fended to Guptill in the same position off the same bowler at 183 for 9. Samuels, on 98 when Roach departed, brought up his century in thrilling style, lashing Southee high over cover for six with last man Tino Best at the other end.

He added two more sixes off successive balls, both sailing over Southee’s head, and another off Bracewell, before he was caught on the deep cover boundary off Bracewell to end the innings. New Zealand, left an hour and a half to bat, got a fine opening stand from Guptill and BJ Watling as they took the lead past 100. But Deonarine removed both in the last 15 minutes to keep the match in the balance. Watling went first, shuffling too far across his stumps and lbw, while Guptill, after hitting seven fours off 59 balls, departed in identical fashion.

Nightwatchman Neil Wagner (2 not out) and Brendon McCullun survived to the close.
