India are now into finals to face one of the toughest competitor Australian on their home ground. India have so far won the title twice (Mohammad Kaif, 2000 and Virat Kohli, 2008). Can Unmukt Chand will become the third skipper to bring the trophy? Indian team so far have failed with bat and bowlers have been a saviour in the last 2 encounters. On a pitch seaming friendly captain winning the toss will definitely bowl first. Australia have done it thrice (1988, 2002, 2010). Can they retain the trophy?

Toss: Australia have won the toss and elected to bat

Clarke: We’re going to have a bat. This is concrete. I have not seen a wicket like this. There is not a blade of grass on the track. We have been starting practice as late as five in the evening as preparation. Afghanistan have a strong team. They will be keen to do well. After our recent tour of England we are ready to go as well.

Mangal: If I had won the toss I would have batted as well. The boys did a lot of hard work in Dubai and are ready. It is a big task for Afghanistan. We’re playing against a big team.

Preview: India vs Australia Under-19 World Cup Final 2012

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 06:45 AM PDT

India will face their toughest test in the pursuit of a third ICC Under-19 World Cup Trophy when they take on defending champions Australia in what promises to be an exciting summit clash on Sunday.

Patchy in batting with some of their top order batsmen not showing the desired consistency, the Indians will have to raise their game in conditions that have favoured the bowlers at the Tony Ireland Stadium.

India have not quite hit their straps despite the tournament drawing to a close now with not-too-impressive performances in Group C. The Indians followed up a defeat to the West Indies with expected wins against Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea.

Superb bowling performances saw them defeat Pakistan in quarters and New Zeland in the semis but the side has failed to get consistent efforts from their batsmen, with Vijay Zol (150 runs) being India’s highest run-scorer.

They have been much better with the ball though, with Kamal Passi (10 wickets) and Sandeep Sharma (8 wickets) leading their attack.

The spin duo of Harmeet Singh and Baba Aparajith also proved their worth with economical spells in the nine-run win over New Zealand in the last-four stage.

Batting first is often seen as an advantage in the 50-over format but four countries have pulled off successful run-chases with the side which bats first averaging just 213 runs at the venue.

Only Australia’s Cameron Bancroft and Zimbabwe’s Malcolm Lake have scored centuries at the venue.

But India have a successful history at the event, having won it in 2000 and 2008. A disappointing result in 2010 saw the team finish sixth, losing the quarter-final to Pakistan.

On the other hand, winner of the inaugural event in 1988, played in Australia, the host team has won the World Cup three times.

Australia U19s clinched the trophy in 2002 and then again in 2010, when they beat tournament favourites Pakistan in the final by 25 runs.

The team will be hopeful of defending the title on home soil, and, if they do, they will become only the second country after Pakistan to win back-to-back titles.

Their batting has so far relied on the consistency of opener Bancroft and number four Kurtis Patterson, who missed out on a half century by one run in the narrow win over South Africa in the semifinals.

Bowlers have enjoyed the conditions on offer with pace duo of Gurinder Sandhu (9 wickets) and Mark Steketee (7 wickets) being the key men for the home team.

Teams:

India (probable): Prashant Chopra, Unmukt Chand (C), Baba Aparajith, Hanuma Vihari, Vijay Zol, Akshdeep Nath, Smit Patel (wk) Harmeet Singh, Kamal Passi, Ravikant Singh, Kalaria, Sandeep Sharma, Vikas Mishra

Australia (probable): William Bosisto (C), Cameron Bancroft, Meyrick Buchanan, Travis Head, Joel Paris, Kurtis Patterson, James Peirson, Gurinder Sandhu, Mark Steketee, Ashton Turner, Shane Cassel

Ashwin picks up 6-wickets as rain abandons play on day 3 #IndvNZ

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 03:49 AM PDT

Incessant rain forced the umpires to abandon the day’s play on the third day of the first Test between India and New Zealand at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Scorecard | Day 3 Highlights

Following-on, New Zealand were 41/1 in their second innings when bad light stopped play.

Pragyan Ojha took his first wicket in the second innings when he trapped Martin Guptill plumb in front of the wicket.

Ojha hurled a loopy delivery around off and it straightened a touch after landing, Guptill offered no shot and used his pad to defend it. Umpire Ian Gould raised his finger after a huge appeal, even though that looked to be spinning away and missing the stumps.

Following on, Guptill and Brendon McCullum commenced New Zealand’s second innings after lunch.

Earlier, India enforced the follow-on after R Ashwin took six wickets to bowl out New Zealand for 159 runs in their first innings, with the lead of 279 runs in the pocket.

Indian spinners were too hot to handle for the Kiwis as the duo of Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha took nine wickets between them.

James Franklin (43*) was the only Kiwi batsman who looked at ease but he ran out of partners eventually.

This is Ashwin’s best bowling figures in Test cricket.

Ashwin took his sixth wicket when he clean bowled Chris Martin for a first ball duck.

Martin registered his 34th duck in Test cricket and equalled Shane Warne’s record. Ashwin dished out a simple off-spinner around off, Martin went forward but the ball spun back in a shade to beat the bat and went on to disturb the stumps.

Ashwin registered his third five-wicket haul when he had Trent Boult caught by Gautam Gambhir at short leg.

Ashwin served a nice loopy off-spinner on off, Boult got on the front foot for defense but it took the inside edge. The ball brushed his pads and Gambhir at short leg pouched the simplest of catches.

Ashwin took his fourth wicket when he took a good return catch to dismiss Jeetan Patel.

Ashwin bowled a flighted full delivery outside off, Patel reached out for it and mistimed his drive aerially back to the bowler. Ashwin dived down in time to his left and snapped it inches over the turf. The third umpire had a good look at the replays and ruled it in favour of India.

Pragyan Ojha took his third wicket when he had Doug Bracewell stumped by captain MS Dhoni.

Ojha played on the patience of the batsman and dropped a flighted delivery outside off. Bracewell shimmied down the track for a big shot but it spun away to beat the bat. Dhoni collected the ball and broke the stumps in a jiffy.

Umesh Yadav trapped Kruger van Wyk plumb in front of the wicket in the second over of the day.

van Wyk tried to pull, went through the shot too early as the ball dipped and hit his pads.

Start of play on the third day was delayed by an hour due to rain.

On Day 2, India’s first innings ended on 438 with Cheteshwar Pujara contributing 159 and adding 127 runs for the sixth wicket with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni who chipped in with a useful 73.

In New Zealand innings, Dhoni’s move to bring in the tweakers early on paid off as the Kiwis had no answer to the Indian spinners, who exploited the turn and bounce that the wicket offered, and were reduced to 106/5 by close of play.
