Hashim Amla, bowlers crush England in 2nd ODI

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 01:53 PM PDT

South Africa made light work of England in the second one-day international in Southampton on Tuesday, defeating the hosts by 80 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after being set up by Hashim Amla’s 150.

Scorecard | 2nd ODI Highlights

England were set a target of 288 to win following Amla’s stellar innings after the Proteas, who now top the world rankings in all three forms of the game, won the toss and elected to bat.

The hosts would have loved to have mirrored outcast Kevin Pietersen’s innings on the same day, after he thrashed a quick-fire 163 for Surrey in the County Championship match against Somerset, but it was not to be as England’s run chase got off to a horrible start before they were bowled out for 207.

In just the second ball of the innings captain Alastair Cook was clean bowled for a duck by left arm opener Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell put on 64 runs to steady the hosts, but the promising partnership came to an end after Trott departed for 23 courtesy of Dean Elgar’s delightful catch in the deep off the bowling of Morne Morkel.

As he approached his half-century, Bell was next to fall for 45, bowled by deceptive spinner Robin Peterson to leave England in the awkward position of 77 for three.

South Africa began to take control of the match when Peterson struck for a second time in his next over, Ravi Bopara was claimed for 16 as he struck a back-foot drive direct to Faf du Plessis at extra cover. England lasted 40.4 overs.

Earlier Amla scored a magnificent 150 to lead South Africa to an imposing total of 287 for five.

Graeme Smith and Amla shared a fluent opening partnership of 89, seeing off the early threat of James Anderson and Steven Finn with ease.

Smith struck five crisp fours in his 52 before skying a catch to wicketkeeper Kieswetter off Tim Bresnan but Amla continued his rich vein of form.

The bearded right-hander lost JP Duminy for 14, run out by Anderson after a mix-up, while Elgar was bowled by Graeme Swann for 15 on his debut.

But Amla, who scored 482 runs in the recent test series win against England including a triple century, moved serenely on, striking 16 fours in his highest one-day international innings.

The first match of the series was washed out. England can reclaim their spot at the top of the ODI world rankings if they beat South Africa in the next match at The Oval on Friday.

Alastair Cook: “We just didn’t play very well, in all three aspects. All credit to the way Amla played, his innings showed us how to play. When we batted we were up with the run rate but we never got our partnerships going. Amla played beautifully, it’s frustrating for a captain. It’s frustrating to drop catches, we’re training really hard but they’re not sticking. There’s no reason why they’re going down. We thought it was gettable but we needed someone to stay in and get big runs. It hasn’t happened today and it’s frustrating but we’ve got three games to come. They’re playing some good cricket, we’ve got to look within ourselves to do it, players have got to stand up and be counted to turn it around.”

AB de Villiers: “Yeah, very happy, though still think there’s a few areas we can work on. I enjoyed the South Africa support out there today. There’s still stuff we can work on to get better, Hashim’s on fire at the moment, he’s breaking all sorts of records and hopefully that can continue well into the future. We were just trying different combinations, left-hand, right-hand combinations against the spinners, we change things [with the order] according to the situation. The wicket played well, we thought it might break up a bit more but the spinners did well. We lost wickets at quick intervals in the middle, fielding wasn’t perfect, so lots to work on. We’re proud [of being No. 1] but there are lost of ODIs played and we’re working towards winning a World Cup and staying No. 1.”

Hashim Amla is named Man of the Match: “Things are falling into place but an element of fortune has to go your way as well and I just try to stick to the basics. The one-day game has its different characteristics and you can play a few more flair shots. The wicket was tough early on and it was tough to score off the spinners, the pace was down but we got our partnerships going. I didn’t think I would be achieving this, it’s just an honour. I’m enjoying the game and the team results have been fantastic and that takes precedence. My circus moment [in the field] just tweaked my back but I’ll rest it and hopefully be okay for The Oval.”

Misbah: I will bat first. It is a typical Sharjah wicket and it will slow down as the game progresses. Whenever we have played here, we have done well. We have a combination of two bowlers, three spinners and Kamran Akmal is in the side.

Clarke: There was a little bit of dew in the night and it was hard to grip the ball. It was hotter than yesterday but it is nice today. Pakistan have wonderful spin bowlers and we have to be on top of our game. Dan Christian replaces Doherty. The batting order is the same and Wade is fit.

Pakistan extra motivated to beat Australia: Misbah-ul-Haq

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 11:11 PM PDT

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq believes his players will be extra motivated to win against Australia who they have not beaten for the last 10 years.

The two teams meet in a three-match one-day series starting at Sharjah on Tuesday, followed by as many Twenty20 internationals.

Misbah said his players will make an extra effort to register a series win which has eluded them since Pakistan’s 2-1 win in Australia in 2002.

“Of course, whenever there is such a thing it charges the team in an extra way, its needs an extra effort to combine and beat an opponent who we have not beaten for some time,” Misbah said Monday.

Pakistan have only two survivors in Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik from the team which beat Australia 10 years ago, but Misbah said all his players are focused against an opponent who are dangerous anywhere in the world.

“Australia are one of the top teams, it’s difficult to beat them because they are a fighting team in any conditions of the world,” said Misbah of the Australian team led by Michael Clarke.

“They have good players who put up the best fight and they are a difficult opponent,” said Misbah, playing down the hype that it will be a series between Pakistani spin bowlers against Australian batsmen.

“I don’t think we will only rely on spinners, we have to bat well and fast bowlers are very important for us because the ball reverse swings in Sharjah,” said Misbah.

Australian pacemen grabbed nine of the 10 wickets during their 66-run win against Afghanistan in the first-ever match between the two countries here on Saturday.

Misbah admitted it will be important for Pakistan to win after losing their last two one-day series, 3-1 in Sri Lanka and 4-1 here against England.

“I think its important for both the teams also for Australia,” said Misbah of his opponents who lost 4-0 to England last month.

“For us it is very important because after this is the World T20, we couldn’t give the kind of performance that we wanted in the last two series, so its a good chance for us to stage a comeback,” said Misbah.

The Pakistan captain said oppressive conditions in United Arab Emirates, with the temperature scaling to 40-plus in the day and 35-plus in the evening, gives Pakistan some edge.

“Definitely, conditions suit us but our players are focused because they know teams can adapt quickly and we have to be at our best to beat Australia,” said Misbah.

“We are going to play against a top team and if we win then we have advantage and it will help us in future. It also helps you improve when you play a top team and you remove your flaws,” said Misbah.

The second match will be played in Abu Dhabi on August 31 followed by the third here on September 3. All three Twenty20 internationals will be played in Dubai on September 5, 7 and 10. (AFP)

Preview: Pakistan vs Australia 1st ODI Sharjah 2012

Australia will be looking to rediscover the form that allowed it to dominate the one-day international format in recent years when the three-match series against Pakistan starts on Tuesday in Sharjah.

The Australians were No. 1 until a 4-0 loss to England and other results demoted the team to fourth in the ICC rankings — its lowest ever position. Pakistan has been struggling lately as well to drop to sixth in the world, losing 3-1 to Sri Lanka and also being beaten 4-0 by England earlier this year.

“I think both teams are keen to get some consistency into the one-day game,” Australia captain Michael Clarke said Sunday. “Pakistan is a lot like Australia in the fact they have a lot of talent. It’s just about performing consistently, getting out on the field and playing some of your best cricket.”

Clarke praised the team’s performance in beating Afghanistan by 66 runs in a one-off ODI on Sunday. Australia can also take some confidence from the fact that it has dominated Pakistan in recent ODIs, winning the last four series and not lost to the opponent since 1989.

“Our cricket in general back in Australia has been a lot more consistent than away from Australia, so it’s certainly a goal of the Australia team that we are performing overseas,” he said. “We started well against Afghanistan, but we will have to be at our best against Pakistan.”

Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore said it will be an “interesting” contest but feels the Australians are vulnerable following a recent string of injuries and player retirements.

“The opposition (is) licking their wounds a little bit from recent performances,” Whatmore said. “They have had some injuries and they have had results not go their way. We are hoping to continue that form, but we are also aware they can come back pretty sharply, pretty hard to try and reverse that trend.”

The hot and humid conditions and late night starts in the United Arab Emirates may play a part in the outcome. However, the performance of the spin bowlers looks likely to be crucial, with Pakistan set to choose a lineup that includes tweakers Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal.

Australia has also included a few spinners, such as Glenn Maxwell, Xavier Doherty and Steve Smith — but none have the reputation of Pakistan’s slow bowlers. Australia’s batsmen has also has even spent time in Darwin to face spin in net sessions ahead of the series.

“To have success in the next three, one day, whoever bowls spin the best and whoever plays spin the best will win the series,” Clarke said. “Pakistan is very good one-day team. Their great strength is spin bowling. They have some really good spinners. Our preparations as a batting group facing spin has been good … We felt we played pretty well last night against a fair bit of spin. “

Whatmore acknowledged spin would be a key factor but noted many of the wickets in the Australia-Afghanistan match were taken by quick bowlers.

“Certainly, the Pakistan team attack I wouldn’t say revolves around spin, but it is a fairly decent component of our attack,” Whatmore said. “We have been bowling more spin than quick (bowlers) in 50-over matches, and that will be important. Whatever they deliver to us, we have to be on our toes to either chase the total or set a decent target.”

Whatmore also downplayed Pakistan’s recent troubles in ODIs, saying his team could have won the two matches it lost against Sri Lanka.

“You could look at the win-loss ratio and you could say we were beaten badly,” Whatmore said. “But those that look closely, we managed to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory. Both games were ours until we nicely handed it back to the opposition. We are painfully aware of the areas the boys need to get better in and, if that can happen, this team will be a lot more consistent.”

Hafeez said they have an advantage by playing in Sharjah, a city where the team holds a 76-33 record dating back to 1984.
“I know the history but we are not keeping anything in our mind,” Hafeez said. “We are playing this series like a fresh series, and hopefully the boys will do something good for Pakistan.”
