Ashwin’s double 6-for sets up innings win against New Zealand

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 05:27 AM PDT

Ravichandran Ashwin produced a career-best 12-wicket match haul as a merciless India relied on the spinners to crush New Zealand by an innings and 115 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series on Sunday.

Scorecard | Watch Day 4 Highlights

New Zealand batting collapsed yet again as they lost the last seven wickets for 26 runs to get bundled out for a meagre 164 in the second innings, shortly after the tea break to give the hosts an easy victory with more than a day to spare.

Ashwin’s match figures of 12 for 85 is the best by an Indian in a Test match against New Zealand, eclipsing S Venkatraghavan’s 12 for 140.

The Tamil Nadu spinner foxed the inexperienced Kiwi batsmen by extracting a lot of turn and bounce from the strip as he capped 6/54 to follow up his first innings tally of 6/31.

Ojha returned with figures of three for 48 to lend a fine support at the other end as the spin duo shared nine wickets between them exposing the Black Caps’ vulnerability to play spin.

India had a frustrating first session as the overnight duo of Brendon McCullum (42) and Kane Williamson (52) put up a brave front after resuming at 44 for one, following on in the second innings.

But after Umesh Yadav (1/32) broke the 72-run second wicket partnership, New Zealand lost their remaining nine wickets in 34.4 overs with more than a day left for the match.

New Zealand were 146 for six at tea but lost the remaining four wickets in 25 minutes after resumption as the spin duo wreaked havoc in the camp.

It was also India’s first Test win in nine months following a 0-4 spanking in Australia as the batting stalwarts Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman retired in the aftermath of the series.

The two teams will now travel to Bangalore for the second Test to begin from August 31.

After a frustrating first-half, India got their first breakthrough of the day after lunch when a poor decision by Steve Davis ruled McCullum out.

McCullum got an inside edge before the ball hit the pads but umpire Davis ruled the batsman out as the Indian fielders appealed.

Predictably, McCullum was angry as he started trudging back towards pavilion nodding his head in disbelief.

The absence of DRS certainly hurt the New Zealanders as the partnership between McCullum and Kane Williamson was proving to be a thorn in the flesh of the Indians. They had defied the Indian attack for 30.3 overs.

Once the resolute stand was broken, it was a one-way traffic for the Indian spinners who returned to haunt the inexperienced Kiwi line-up.

Ross Taylor (7) followed becoming Ashwin’s first victim of the second innings when the New Zealand skipper was foxed by the turn to see his stumps tumbling.

Flynn and Williamson looked to build on a partnership as the latter, who had scored a century in his debut in Ahmedabad two seasons ago, went on to complete a fine half century.

But soon after he too ran out of patience with Ojha adding a second to his tally when the youngster was caught in the slip by Virender Sehwag.

Ashwin took two wickets in two overs in the form of Flynn and James Franklin as with spin at both ends, it was just a matter of time for the Indians to take an unassailable 1-0 lead.

Sehwag took a diving catch at the first slip to dismiss Franklin off Ashwin’s bowling and it enthralled the 20,000-plus Sunday crowd in the 39,000-capacity stadium.

Ashwin was simply unplayable as the Indian offspinner took his 10th wicket haul in the match in the form of Van Wyk.

Earlier, India straightway began the proceedings with the spin duo of Ojha and Ashwin but there was little assistance in the morning as the Kiwi batsmen played them out sensibly.

The duo of McCullum and Williamson played with patience, waiting for the loose deliveries as India struggled to get the first breakthrough of the day.

There was a setback for India when centurion Cheteshwar Pujara while fielding at short leg in the 33rd over, was hit near his right knee, around the same place he had a surgery last year in London.

Grimacing in pain, Pujara was taken out of the field by the support staff as Ajinkya Rahane came as the replacement.

Pujara did not come back but there was an announcement that he was alright and it was just a minor “bruise”. India brought on the medium-pacers Zaheer and then Yadav at one end hoping for some reverse swing but there was no success with the Kiwi duo keeping their intact.

1st Test: India vs New Zealand Post Match Presentation 2012

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 05:05 AM PDT

R Ashwin: It’s easy to talk before the match, but cricket is a tougher game. I have been working on a lot of things and I’m happy that they have come out well. I repetitively maintain that numbers aren’t key to success. That’s not how you should go about your cricketing career. As an offspinner, it’s easy to lose your line. I have been working on my accuracy. International cricket is very demanding. I don’t think it was an unplayable wicket. The second innings was much more tougher than the first. Credit to Pragyan Ojha. We have been working on our fielding. As a team we have been setting some goals. We all watched the U-19 final together. Unmukt Chand batted well. To get a World Cup victory in Australia is really special.

R Ashwin is the Man of the Match.

MS Dhoni: Congratulations to India U-19, Chand batted really well. As far as this match is concerned, Pujara batted well. It was getting difficult for the bowlers. We were also battling the weather. The bowlers bowled brilliantly. They did not give any loose deliveries. That made the difference. Brilliant catching in this game. ViruPa got a few good catches, so did Virat. We have done well in all the aspects in this game. It was important for Pujara as he was coming back from injury. He has a good temperament. He can bat for a long period and we can play around him.

Ross Taylor: We showed that we could survive. Kane and Brendon batted well. India showed us their mastery. We did not have a practise game, but that is not an excuse. We will try to come back as a better batting unit. To bat a long period of time is an achievement. I think we need to learn how to play Ashwin a lot better. We played when the chips are down and will come back stronger in Bangalore

Under 19 World Cup: BCCI announces cash prizes for Indian players

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 04:13 AM PDT

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh each for members of the Indian team which lifted the third Under-19 World Cup title in Townsville after defeating defending champions Australia.

BCCI President N Srinivasan congratulated the team, which was led superbly by unbeaten centurion skipper Unmukt Chand in the final against the defending champions.

Chand led from the front with a magnificent 111 as the Indian colts beat Australia by six wickets.

“Many congratulations to the Indian team for winning the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. We won the ‘senior’ World Cup last year, and now our boys have triumphed in the junior version of the tournament. This is a great day for Indian cricket. The Board would like to announce a cash prize of Rs 20 lakh to each player, and Rs 15 lakh to each member of the support staff,” Srinivasan said in a statement.

This was India U-19s first triumph after Mohammad Kaif and Virat Kohli led their respective teams to victory in 2000 and 2008 editions respectively.

BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale also extended his wishes to the Indian team and said every member of the squad worked hard towards this victory.

“The Indian cricket team has played some extraordinary cricket in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. The members of the team have worked hard, and deserve the title. Heartiest congratulations to the boys and support staff for winning the World Cup,” he said. (PTI)

India beat Australia to win U-19 World Cup 2012

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 01:46 AM PDT

Captain Unmukt Chand’s unbeaten 111 and Smit Patel’s 58 not out guided India to a comfortable six-wicket victory against Australia in the Under-19 World Cup final at Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville on Sunday.

Scorecard | Watch Final Highlights

Chand’s 126-ball ball century was studded with 5 sixes and 7 fours.

Chand reached his fifty off 67 balls with the help of 2 sixes and 5 fours.

India lost their fourth wicket when Joel Paris had Vijay Zol caught behind by Jimmy Peirson.

India lost their third wicket when Ashton Turner took a simple return catch to dismiss Hanuma Vihari.

Gurinder Sandhu gave Australia the second breakthrough when he had Baba Aparajith caught by Ashton Turner in the covers.

Aparajith hit 5 fours in his 38-ball 33 and added 75 runs with Chand for the second wicket.

Mark Steketee gave Australia the first breakthrough when he had Prashant Chopra caught behind by Jimmy Peirson for a duck.

Earlier, India frittered away the early advantage as defending champions Australia recovered from a shaky start to post a competitive 225/8.

Electing to field after winning the toss amid overcast conditions, the Indians had the Aussies on the mat at 38/4 before host skipper William Bosisto (87 not out) rebuilt the innings with the help of some notable contributions down the order.

Both teams named the same XIs that had got them through the knockouts. While Australia, aiming for a fourth title, entered the final undefeated, India had lost one game in the first group stage to the West Indies.

Sandeep Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for India, grabbing four wickets in his 10 overs that conceded 54 runs and included a couple of maidens.

In conditions that have favoured bowlers all through the tournament, two-time winners India could not have asked for a better start as Sharma struck in his very first over.

He removed both the openers — Cameron Bancroft (2) and Jimmy Peirson (0) — in his first spell itself. The Oz team was looking down the barrel as a couple of more wickets fell in quick succession.

However, Bosisto took charge of the proceedings and gradually steadied the ship sharing a 65-run fifth wicket stand with Travis Head (37) to start with.

But the Indians managed to get back when Harmeet Singh and Baba Aparajith combined to run out Head after a mix-up between the two batsmen.

Head took off for a single from the non-strikers end, but was sent back by Bosisto. Harmeet moved quickly to pick up the ball and threw it to Aparajith, who ran out Head.

Head’s 56-ball knock included five fours. The Indians, however, let slip the advantage once again as Bosisto found another able partner in Ashton Turner (43). Together the duo accelerated the scoring rate and put on 93 runs for the sixth wicket.

Turner was the more aggressive of the two batsmen, sending down three boundaries and a six during his 50-ball knock before becoming Sharma’s third victim of the match.

The Aussie score read 196/6 at that stage and it wasn’t long before the Indians managed to send the tail back to the pavillion.

But Bosisto held fort at one end and his 120-ball patient innings included six boundaries.

More importantly, the skipper managed to take his team past the 200-mark, which gave the Aussies the crucial psychological edge as most of the games so far have been low-scoring thrillers.

U19 World Cup Final: India vs Australia Post Match Presentation

Chand: I don’t have words to express my feelings. I am thankful to god for being able to perform. I scored a century in the last finals as well, they were very good today and deserved more luck. Townsville has been very lucky for us, we have enjoyed our time here. The journey as the Indian camp has been very good, we had 15 players from 15 states, now we are one as a team. We have had many camps together and have won many tournaments. I do not have MSD’s number, but I would like to get his number now. I would like to thank our support staff, they did a great job for us, thanks to the NCA staff, the net bowlers, the people back home and the crowd over here. Thanks a lot for being there for us.

Unmukt Chand is the MoM for his sparkling century

William Bosisto: Everyone is pretty deflated in our camp. We had a great time over the last fortnight. We dropped a few chances, that proved costly in the end. Congrats to the Indians, they were better then us in all the facets of the game. Unmukt is an outstnding cricketer and this is not the first time we suffered at his hands. Hopefully, we will get one back at him the next time we play. Thanks to all those responsible for making this tournament such a pleasure.

Smit Patel: When I went in to bat, the captain appreciated me. I was a bit tentative in the beginning, Chand gave me confidence to get going. We wanted to stick to the basics, the coach told us not to get nervous in tough situations. Chand is a special character, it was awesome to bat with him. We had a century partnership previously as well, we knew we could repeat it today.

U19 World Cup Final: India wins toss, elects to field against Australia

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 05:22 PM PDT

Toss: India U19 have won the toss and elected to field

Unmukt Chand: We will bowl first. We hope to make use of the new ball. There is some clouds around and we might get some help with the new ball. This is a big match, probably the last of our U-19 career. WE want to enjoy the ocassion.

Bosisto: We are pumped up for the bg day. I would have batted had we won the toss. We are looking forward to a good game.

Pitch Report: The pitch looks very good. The sun has been beating down on this track. There is hardly any grass, the wicket looks dry. There will be some movement with the new ball, batting first should be the way to go.

Cameron Bancroft: We have been going very well. We have played some good cricket and have one more game to go. There is some pressure on us, but same with respect to the Indians as well. The facilities here are second to none and the conditions have been tough for the batsmen. The two new balls is good for the game.

Clarke: After our trip to England I think this was a very good performance. Tonight was important considering the fact that we play Pakistan after this. We have some areas to work on but I thought we got off to a good start. I thought the boys handled the heat very well today. Starc bowled really well, I thought all the bowlers did well. I think Maxwell would have liked a few more runs but he will surely get another chance. It was nice to bat at number three but it doesn’t matter much to me where I bat. I’m very happy that we have started off with a win but we will have to be at our best against Pakistan.

Mangal: Thanks a lot, the players played very well. Australia is one of the best sides in the world. Unfortunately the top order didn’t bat well, but we put on a good fight. The toss was important but the way the bowlers performed on the field was really good and it also showed that we can compete with a top side. We have learned a lot from this game and this will prepare us well for the future. The way we played today was better than how we played against Pakistan, I would like to thank Cricket Australia for arranging this. I would like to request the ICC and other nations to have more such fixtures. We are preparing for the World T20, we have learned a lot of lessons from when we played last time. This time we will be a lot better. I want to consider this as a historic game, it was the 200th game at this ground and it was the first time a match was extended over two days.

Starc: It is quite humid out here. I don’t think it was the heat but it was the humidity that affected us a lot. It was tough to grip the ball as it got quite wet late, and there was some dew. I think we all bowled quite well, we just need to get used to the conditions. This is a great match to get under the belt before the Pakistan series. Afghanistan did well to put on a fight.

India are now into finals to face one of the toughest competitor Australian on their home ground. India have so far won the title twice (Mohammad Kaif, 2000 and Virat Kohli, 2008). Can Unmukt Chand will become the third skipper to bring the trophy? Indian team so far have failed with bat and bowlers have been a saviour in the last 2 encounters. On a pitch seaming friendly captain winning the toss will definitely bowl first. Australia have done it thrice (1988, 2002, 2010). Can they retain the trophy?
