Kohli, Irfan seal comfortable win over Sri Lanka : T20 Report

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 12:00 PM PDT

After a thumping 4-1 win in the ODI series, India continued their dominance over Sri Lanka as they thrashed the hosts by 39 runs in the one-off T20 match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Chasing a modest 156, Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 116 conceding an easy victory to the visitors.

Scorecard | Watch Highlights

After blazing knock by in-form Virat Kohli guided India to 155/3, left arm pacer Irfan Pathan tore apart Sri Lankan top order while Ashok Dinda got rid of the tailenders to secure win for their team.

Pathan dismissed Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga and Mahela Jayawardene in quick succession to reduce 35/3 in five overs.

Pathan bowled out Dilshan (0) in the first over and then sent back Tharanga (5) in the third to reduce Sri Lanka to 18/2.

Jayawardene tried to rescue his side with some fiery strokes but Pathan struck again in the fifth over to end his challenge.

R Ashwin gave Sri Lanka fourth blow at the score of 68. On the second delivery of the 10th over, Ashwin bowled out Lahiru Thirimanne.

Angelo Mathews tried to rescue his side from the collapse but Ashok Dinda didn’t let him do that. Dinda then wrapped up Sri Lanka tail and finished with a figure of 4/19.

Earlier, Kohli, who is in the form of his life, smashed his way to a 48-ball 68 and shared a couple of crucial partnerships, including 74 runs with Ajinkya Rahane (21) and 48 with Suresh Raina (34 no, 3×4, 1×6) for the second and third wickets respectively.

Kohli’s innings consisted of 11 boundaries and a six. However, India couldn’t accelerate much towards the end, managing only 84 runs in the last 10 overs, with a meagre 35 coming off the last five.

Put in to bat, Gautam Gambhir (6) got a reprieve when his mistimed pull-shot was dropped at deep mid-wicket by Shaminda Eranga. However, the rookie pacer made amends as he bowled the senior opener, who again went for an identical shot only to see his stumps pegged back.

Kohli can do no wrong these days and he put the Lankans on the back foot with a flurry of fours. A couple off Mathews was followed by three in the second over of Eranga.

Among the shots Kohli hit, a cover drive off Mathews and a shot through point region were the stand-out ones.

The Delhi lad was off the blocks in a flash but the same can’t be said about Rahane who was finding it difficult to score runs on a track where the ball was doing a bit.

Rahane finally got something going his way as he hit Thisara Perera over extra cover for a big six before offering a simple return catch to Mendis. Kohli finally completed his maiden T20I half-century off 32 balls when he hit left-arm spinner Rangana Herath over extra-cover for a boundary.

The shot of the innings, however, was a six by Kohli off leggie Mendis’ bowling. Mendis fired it down leg-side as the batsmen came down the track. Kohli maintained perfect balance as he converted it into an overpitched delivery.

He finally holed out in the deep off Eranga’s bowling, when his cross-batted shot failed to clear the deep mid-wicket fielder. Kohli’s departure slowed down things as the Lankan bowlers were successful in bowling a number of dot balls.

Raina, who has been an effective T20 player, hit some crisp shots in between those dot balls, including a lofted six, as India crossed 150 in the final over.

Dhoni: Overall we have performed well. In the middle overs we slowed down a bit. We thought it would be a high scoring game but the ball was swinging in the end, so it made it difficult for us to slog. We got wickets with the new ball, so it helped. When we play with 4 bowlers and the part timers, it’s important for the batsmen to do well. The bowlers may have an off-day, so if the part timers could contribute it will help us. When I came here for my first tour, the tracks were different. One ball used to spin and the next one would go straight. We came after a long break and we did well as a unit. The wickets have been re-laid regularly here and we have adjusted better than them (Sri Lankans).

Mahela: The mistakes that we’re making are bad. It’s tough to compete when we make mistakes like that. We didn’t even bat 20 overs, so we have to try and control those mistakes. It’s not a big worry for us, we’re still playing some good cricket. Obviously when you come against a team like India, it’s going to be tough. Sri Lankan premier league starts next week, we should get our mindset right for that tournament and prepare for the World Cup.

Kohli is the ‘player of the series’. Not sure if it’s just for the T20 or the entire tour, but it’s funny nevertheless!

Pathan: Wickets at the top of the order helps. It brings down the economy rate as well. Mahela was going great guns and it was important to get him out. We concentrated on swinging the new ball – Dhoni said at the break that the ball was moving around and we did just that. We have a good bowling coach and he has been keeping an eye on us in the nets. God has been kind to me, but I don’t want to think too far ahead. I’ll take it one match at a time.

Irfan Pathan is the Man of the Match for his spell of 4-0-27-3

Mahela: We are going to bowl first. It is a good wicket. Not sure what kind of score is good on this track. I enjoyed this break. I got to relax for a change. Everyone looking forward to this game. Great weather and great crowd. We have three changes. Kapugedera is not playing. Sachitra is not playing, Herath is in. Eranga comes in for Pradeep.

Dhoni: It is a good experience for all the boys. I’m not a 100% but you’re never 100%. All the formats are demanding. T20s seem to get over in 3 hours but the demand from the body is the same as a 50 over game. Just that the duration of Tests is much longer compared to the other formats. Zaheer is out and Umesh Yadav comes in. Only the one change for us.

Manoj Tiwary: All the bowlers are dangerous. You want to do well and score against everyone. Our experienced bowlers like Zaheer and everyone bowling quick like Umesh and Dinda, I like playing against them in the nets. The fans help us do well. When we do well they cheer and that increases out confidence. There is some pressure to. I like Muhammad Ali. He was ruthless. On the whole I really like him. I’m getting married this year probably, if everything clicks.

Pitch report: The pitch is a little drier. The grass has been shaved off but it will stay true throughout the game reckons Arun Lal.

BCCI hopeful of Yuvraj Singh’s availability for T20 World Cup

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 06:51 AM PDT

Senior BCCI official and IPL governing council chairman Rajeev Shukla on Tuesday said the BCCI is satisfied with the improvement shown by Yuvraj Singh and is hopeful of his availability during the upcoming World Twenty20 Championship in Sri Lanka.

“We (BCCI) are very happy with Yuvraj’s recovery. He has been practising hard at the National Cricket Academy for the past one month. The physios and the trainers are keeping a close watch on him,” Shukla said at the promotional event regarding Champions League Twenty20.

“We are hopeful about his availability for the World Twenty20 but then again, it will be the prerogative of the selectors. They will take a final call,” he added.

With the Indian team having a choc-a-bloc calendar till the next edition of IPL, there was the inevitable question of fatigue, but Shukla said that the onus would be on players to decide when they want rest.

“I don’t think the question of players’ fatigue arises.

The BCCI’s policy is very clear. If a player feels that he is tired and requires rest, he should intimate the BCCI and would certainly be given time to recover.

“In any case, the support staff of the franchises is in constant touch with the national team’s support staff. The BCCI would never compromise on fitness issues,” the senior official said.

Shukla also didn’t seem too worried about the slotting of Champions League T20 immediately after the World T20 Championship and said popularity of the game is such that viewers’ fatigue won’t be an issue.

“The Champions League T20 is gaining popularity and during IPL-IV, the CLT20 was immediately held after that but it was well received by people.

“So, I don’t think that viewers’ fatigue will be an issue. Also the tournament, when held for the first time in South Africa was well received by people,” he added. (PTI)

Sehwag, Zaheer returns home from Sri Lanka

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 02:52 AM PDT

India’s opening batsman Virender Sehwag and fast bowler Zaheer Khan have returned home from Sri Lanka.

Sehwag, who averaged 37 in the just-concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka with a top score of 94, missed the last One-dayer of the five-match series on Saturday because of injury.

Zaheer, who also did not have an impressive tour with just four wickets to his credit, has been rested so that he can be fresh for the home series against New Zealand, starting on August 23.

India are expected to include Umesh Yadav and Ashok Dinda in the Twenty20 team, along with Ajinkya Rahane for Tuesday’s T20 match.

Next Test may be my last : Kevin Pietersen

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 12:30 AM PDT

England star Kevin Pietersen on Monday dropped a bombshell by suggesting that the third and final Test against South Africa might be his last.

“I can’t rule out that my next Test may be my last,” he said after winning the man of the match award in the drawn second Test at Headingley after a superb innings of 149, which he followed up by taking three wickets.

Pietersen’s future was a major issue before the series against the Proteas began.

He has already announced his retirement from from one-day international cricket, amid speculation he wanted to be available for a full Indian Premier League programme while still playing for England and play in the upcoming World Twenty20 in September.

“That is two of many points,” he said. “But they’re not the main two points. Let’s make that very clear, there are other points I am trying to sort out in the dressing room.

“There are a lot of other issues. It’s absolutely 100 percent not a money issue. You’ll find out soon enough, not tonight. It will be a lot clearer after the next Test match.”

Pietersen said it would be a “huge shame” if his Test career came to an end.

“I love playing Test cricket for England,” he told reporters. “The saddest part for me is that the spectators just love watching me play and I love playing for England but the politics is what I have to deal with personally.

“It’s tough for me playing for England.”

Pietersen also hit out at what he suggested were media leaks about his negotiations with the England and Wales Cricket Board leading into the series.

“It was blamed on me, it was me grabbing the headlines. Did I leak anything to the media about my meetings with the ECB?” he added.

“I never spoke a single word to a single journalist about anything that was spoken about behind closed doors, that I thought were closed doors.”

England captain Andrew Strauss and Pietersen attended separate press conferences.

Strauss said: “I don’t want to comment on what Kevin may or may not have said. I’m happy to talk about how amazingly well he played in this Test match. It was one of the best innings I have seen him play.

“What he may or may not have said is not for me to comment on at this stage.”

South Africa, gunning for England’s world number one Test side position, are currently 1-0 up in the series after Monday’s second Test draw. The third Test starts at Lord’s on August 16. (AFP)

New Zealand announce squad for India tour, Vettori ruled out

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 12:12 AM PDT

New Zealand will be without talismanic skipper Daniel Vettori in their upcoming tour of India due to a groin injury and has been replaced by off-spinner Jeetan Patel in the 15-man Test squad announced on Tuesday.

New Zealand play a two-Test series against India starting August 23 and Ross Taylor will lead the side in the absence of Vettori.

“Unfortunately Daniel Vettori won’t recover in time for the Test series but his injury has created and opportunity for Jeetan Patel to come back into the side. Jeetan has been in great from for Warwickshire and deserves his opportunity,” National Selection Manager Kim Littlejohn said.

All-rounder James Franklin has been included in the squad in place of off-colour batsman Dean Brownlie.

“He brings a lot of experience and knowledge of playing in Indian conditions which will be invaluable,” said Littlejohn.

“Dean Brownlie misses out on selection. We continue to see him as player of the future but at this stage we feel he needs to works on parts of his game. There’s no doubt he will work hard to regain selection,” he added.

Brownlie averaged just 15.75 as New Zealand lost 2-0 in a Test series against the West Indies recently. (PTI)

Squad: Ross Taylor (c), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Daniel Flynn, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Tarun Nethula, Jeetan Patel, Tim Southee, Kruger van Wyk, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.
