Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Delhi Daredevils, Match 2, IPL 2012 – Preview

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 01:30 PM PDT

Underachievers in the last four seasons, both Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils would look to reverse their fortunes when they kickstart their IPL V campaign against each other at the Eden Gardens on Thursday.

Both the teams have the right ingredients, which are needed for a perfect Twenty20 recipe, but the biggest challenge before them would be to make winning a habit this season and pose serious threats to the likes of Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Royals Challengers Bangalore.

For Kolkata skipper Gautam Gambhir, who has been stripped of Indian vice-captaincy, the tournament would mean a lot personally as he would be eager to let his leadership skills do the talking, besides contributing at the top of the order.

The Knight Riders look a far more settled side this time around after roping in former player and New Zealand’s explosive opener Brendon McCullum, and their USD 700,000 catch in West Indian offspinner Sunil Narine, who promises to be the one to look out for.

For Trinidad and Tobago in last season’s Champions League Twenty20, Narine was at his best scalping 10 wickets and gave away a miserly 4.37 runs per over.

Most top batsmen found it difficult to read the off-spinner and in the Indian conditions Narine is expected to revel alongside Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, one of the finest all-rounders in the world at the moment.

To add to it, the return of McCullum, who smashed a 73-ball 158 for the Knight Riders in the very first IPL match of season one four years back, is certain to bring smiles back on the faces of the fans of the Kolkata outfit.

McCullum is expected to partner Jacques Kallis at the top with Gambhir dropping to the No 3 position. The middle-order will have an in-form Manoj Tiwary, who would be desperate to be prove a point to the Indian team management after having denied a single opportunity during the entire tri-series in Australia and the subsequent Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

In Yusuf Pathan, the Knight Riders have one of the most feared hitters and the team would be hoping for his bat to do all the talking this time around after a fairly quiet outing last year.

Apart from Pathan, the Knight Riders also have a host of exciting all-rounders in Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Rajat Bhatia, Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate and Shakib.

The Knight Riders also have balanced bowling attack, which will be led by Australian speedster Brett Lee.

Under Gambhir and former coach Dav Whatmore, the Knight Riders looked a far more settled side last season what if they failed to qualify for the final yet again.

And Whatmore’s successor Trevor Bayliss, who coached Sri Lanka to the World Cup final last year, is regarded as a T20 specialist and he would also look to infuse the winning mantra into the Knight Riders’ camp.

“Trevor Bayliss has immense knowledge of the game (T20).

The side is looking balanced under him. The biggest secret of this side is every member is enjoying each other’s company,” Knight Riders’ bowling consultant Wasim Akram said.

The Daredevils, meanwhile, would be desperate for a turnaround after finishing last in 2011 with just four wins to their credit.

The Daredevils, however, will be without the services of big names like Mahela Jayawardene, Kevin Pietersen and David Warner in tomorrow’s match as they are busy playing for their respective countries. Besides Kiwi Ross Taylor is also unavailable after he broke his hand during the third Test against South Africa recently.

With key players missing for the first half of the event, skipper Virender Sehwag will have to take the extra load in along with Naman Ojha and Venugopal Rao.

A lot of hopes will be pinned on their new signing, West Indies’ Andre Russell who would like to make an impact with the bat at the big stage.

Delhi’s pace battery looks dangerous with Morkel spearheading the attack consisting of comeback man Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron.

The spin line-up, however, looks a bit raw with left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem leading the attack and which will also have Roelf van der Merwe.

Teams:

Kolkata Knight Riders (Probable): Gautam Gambhir (c), Manoj Tiwary, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Yusuf Pathan, Jaidev Unadkat, Laxmipathy Balaji, Manvinder Bisla, Pradeep Sangwan, Brad Haddin (wk), Jacques Kallis, Brendon McCullum.

Delhi Daredevils (Probable): Virender Sehwag (c), Ajit Agarkar, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Naman Ojha (wk), Shahbaz Nadeem,Aaron Finch, Tejashwi Yadav, Doug Bracewell, Morne Morkel, Roelf van der Merwe.

Mumbai Indians thrash Chennai Super Kings by 8-wickets: IPL 2012

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 12:10 PM PDT

Richard Levi smashed 35-ball fifty to help Mumbai Indians thump defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 8 wickets in the opening match of the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Chasing a modest 113-run target, Levi put on 69 runs for the opening wicket with Sachin Tendulkar (16 retired hurt) to set up the run chase perfectly for the Mumbai.

James Franklin (25 not out) and Ambati Rayudu (18 not out) finished off the chase with 19 balls to spare as Mumbai started their new campaign on the right note.

Mumbai’s only worry will be Sachin’s injury as the master blaster left the field with an injured finger as Chennai bounced back with two quick Mumbai Indians wickets but it turned out to be too little too late.

Tendulkar smashed a six and a four in his 15-ball knock before a bouncer from Bollinger hit him on the glove.

Doug Bollinger dismissed Rohit Sharma (0) in the ninth over to reduce Mumbai to 70/2.

Mumbai lost Richard Levi (50) after he added quick 69 runs with Tendulkar. Dwayne Bravo ended Levi’s whirlwind innings, after the batsman slammed three sixes and six boundaries in his 34-ball half century.

Tendulkar and Levi started Mumbai Indians run chase aggressively as they raced to fifty in just six overs.

Electing to field, discipline Mumbai bowlers bowled out defending champions Chennai for paltry 112 in 19.5 overs.

Keiron Pollard (2-15), Lasith Malinga (2-16) and Pragyan Ojha (2-17) took two Chennai wickets each to go with three run-outs.

Asked to bat, Chennai lost wickets at regular intervals and failed to build their innings after losing their three top-order batsmen inside ten overs.

Suresh Raina (36) top-scored for the hosts as he hit a six and two boundaries in his quick-fire 26 balls innings before becoming Ojha’s first victim.

Skipper MS Dhoni’s run out did not favour Chennai as they lost their last seven wickets for 32 runs in the end.

Pollard dismissed Albie Morkel (3) soon after Ojha’s twin-strike. Double-strike by leg-spinner Ojha put Mumbai Indians in front against Chennai in the middle overs. Ojha dismissed Dwayne Bravo (19) in the 12th over to reduce Chennai to 80/4 in 11.2 overs, after he scalped the prized-wicket of Raina (36) in his previous over.

Super Kings lost Murali Vijay (10) and Francois Du Plessis (3) inside six overs. James Franklin dismissed Vijay in the sixth over to reduce Chennai to 38/2 in 5.5 overs. CSK lost opener Du Plessis early in the first over to make a disastrous start to their league campaign.

Earlier, Mumbai skipper Harbhajan Singh won the toss and decided to field against Chennai.

The season’s lung opener at the MA Chidambaram stadium could not have got any better as two of the strongest teams in the tournament will set the tone for the high-octane Twenty20 tournament over the next eight weeks.

Banking on their home advantage which enabled them to win back-to-back titles, the Chennai outfit, led by talismanic Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will be hoping for their third consecutive IPL crown, but for that to happen they will have to pull out all stops to ensure a winning start to their campaign as their rivals — Mumbai Indians — appear to hold a slender edge.

Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings Post Match | IPL 2012 | Match 1

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 12:03 PM PDT

Levi: I am not that stocky, appreciate the comment. The ball was coming onto the bat and I could play my shots. Sachin was very calm and encouraged me to play my shots. The crowd was very friendly and supported good cricket. Sachin seems to be fine for the next match.

Levi is the MoM

Harbhajan: It was a good game for us. It was agood toss to win, the wicket was a bit unpredictable, the fielding was very sharp. Saving runs in the field and creating run-outs were important especially that of MSD.

MS Dhoni: It was not a normal Chennai wicket. We had a rusty start, we did not do well in the last 11 overs. Happy with the bowling though, it was a difficult wicket to bat on. 140-145 would have been great.

IPL T20: Mumbai opts to field against Chennai, Match 1, 2012

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 08:12 AM PDT

Toss: Mumbai have won the toss and elected to field

Harbhajan: I’m always very loose. It is a different challenge and we are ready for it. We have got a young and exciting squad. Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma are back. He did not play in the Champions league. Levi has joined us from South Africa. Chennai has always been a special ground for us. Last year we won the Champions league here. Chennai is always a good team to play. It is a fresh wicket and we would like to bowl first. Levi is playing.

MS Dhoni: It is a very interesting game. It is good to start the first game with home advantage. Some of the boys have been together for a longer time. We came from South Africa and had to shoot a lot of ads for the clients and such things. We would have liked to bowl first too but not too disappointed. I’ve never seen so much grass on this wicket. In the champions league we were a little worried that it was coming on a little slow. Faf and Ravindra Jadeja will be making their debut.

KKR confirms Sunil Narine availability for entire IPL 2012

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 06:45 AM PDT

West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine will be available to play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the entire fifth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), chief executive Venky Mysore said.

ESPN-Cricinfo reported that Narine was free to play for the full tournament.

The 23-year-old Narine was under consideration for the West Indies team to face Australia in a three-Test series, which overlaps with the IPL.

This followed a memorable year for the all-rounder, which included his international debut and being picked up by KKR for $700,000 in the IPL auction.

Narine does not hold a West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) central retainer contract and has not played a Test yet, but his form in the recent One-day and Twenty20 Internationals against the Australians, where he was virtually unplayable, increased the possibility of his selection.

Bench strength and fitness levels will be crucial: Akram

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 06:21 AM PDT

Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram says fitness and bench strength will hold the key in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League, which will see nine teams crisscrossing the country over 54 days and 76 matches.

“With all the travel involved and summer upon us, fitness will be the key. Hence bench strength and fitness levels will be crucial,” Akram, who is a bowling consultant with the Kolkata Knight Riders, said.

“It will be interesting to see how senior Indian players like (Sourav) Ganguly, (Rahul) Dravid, (Sachin) Tendulkar, (Virender) Sehwag and Zaheer (Khan) cope up. They all have major roles to play for their respective teams,” he added.

Akram believed the pressure will be enormous on Ravindra Jadeja who will look to justify the amount Chennai shelled out for him.

“IPL 5 will tell us how much Ravindra Jadeja has evolved as a cricketer. He started promisingly on the Australian tour but faded out. He may have talent but he now has to justify the price that Chennai paid to acquire him. Jadeja really has to get his act together and the pressure will be enormous.

“At the same time, Virat Kohli will be under pressure to continue his good form. He has been a revelation so far for Indian cricket and deserves all the adulation he is getting on and off the field. Kohli now needs to keep his feet firmly grounded and enforce the belief that he is India captaincy material,” Akram said.

Akram backed KKR and Royal Challengers Bangalore to make the qualifiers, besides usual favourites Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

“It is difficult to predict which teams will end up as top four. The IPL has always thrown surprises and it has made or marred reputations.

“But looking at team combinations and back-up staff strength, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Mumbai should go all the way till the qualifiers and eliminators.”

The 45-year-old Akram is hoping to see New Zealander Brendon McCullum deliver the goods for KKR.

“Personally, I will like Brendon McCullum to fire for KKR. I am sure the pugnacious Kiwi will deliver better under Gautam Gambhir. There will be no personality clashes and both Gambhir and McCullum are professional enough to know what’s best for Kolkata.

“Every IPL has had its share of heroes and zeroes. Chris Gayle took IPL 4 by storm. This is a good opportunity for Kevin Pietersen to justify the faith Delhi have in him.”

Talking about his team, Akram said the strength lies in its balance.

“Kolkata has had a change of coach. I believe Trevor Bayliss did extremely well for Sydney Sixers, who won the Big Bash League in Australia. Having coached Sri Lanka in the last World Cup, Bayliss knows the culture of sub-continent teams. He should be a good influence.

“But KKR’s strength lies in its balance. They have a good skipper and the right combination of youth and experience. Manoj Tiwary, Yusuf Pathan and Iqbal Abdulla are extremely capable. Pros like Jacques Kallis, Ryan ten Doeschate, McCullum and Eoin Morgan provide the depth and variety.”

According to Akram, the IPL will provide the Indian fans an opportunity to have some fun, after the disastrous showings of the national team in recent times.

“The IPL has always exposed new players and I am sure this year’s tournament will be no exception. But the focus will always be on the marquee players and the ‘costliest’ ones will be closely monitored by critics and fans alike.

“But there is no substitute for experience and cricket, irrespective of its format, always respects the person who follows its grammar.”
