Preview: Delhi Daredevils Vs Deccan Chargers, IPL 5, 19 April 2012

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 02:30 PM PDT

There is little doubt that Delhi Daredevils are the odds-on favourites but they will need to guard against complacency when they take on bottom-placed Deccan Chargers in an Indian Premier League match.

The Daredevils are in red-hot form having beaten heavyweights, Mumbai Indians, comprehensively at the latter’s backyard, and they would look to continue the momentum and extend the winning run here at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Form and team balance apart, the fact that the Daredevils are playing in front of the home crowd, is likely to make the task even more arduous for the Chargers.

Up against a side that has notched three wins from four matches, the numbers are heavily stacked against the Chargers who are yet to open their account.

The Chargers came close to winning their first game in the fifth season of the IPL, against Rajasthan Royals, but Brad Hodge’s pyrotechnics spoilt their plans yesterday.

Kumar Sangakkara’s men, though, can take heart from the fact that they fought till the end against the Royals.

It will, however, take a little more than that for the Chargers to make a match out of it, when they take the field against Virender Sehwag’s men who have, literally, lived up to their reputation so far in the tournament.

If there is a certain Sehwag at the top of the order to provide the team blistering starts, the middle-order is packed with proven, world class stroke-makers like Kevin Pietersen and Mahela Jayawardene, and the addition of New Zealander Ross Taylor, as expected, has only bolstered the line-up.

Prior to the start of the tournament, their bowling, especially the spin department, was thought to be a weaklink, but young Shabaaz Nadeem has unfailingly delivered the goods for the Daredevils.

The 22-year-old left-arm spinner is coming off a solid performance against a power-packed Mumbai line-up, and the confidence that his skipper has on him, is expected to make him a better bowler in the coming matches.

South African Morne Morkel has spearheaded the pace attack like he ought to have, well complemented by Umesh Yadav, Irfan Pathan and Ajit Agarkar.

The Daredevils’ strength can be gauged from the fact that they have a hard-hitter like Aaron Finch on the bench, and be rest assured, the Australian is surely waiting for an opportunity.

What makes the Daredevils even more dangerous is that, not just one or two, but almost the entire team has been playing as a unit.

If the side’s illustrious batsmen have fired in unison, the bowlers have been equal to the task. Look no further than the scorecard against Mumbai for proof. Pietersen, of course, was an exception.

Barring the reverse against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy stadium, the Daredevils have been clinical in their wins, be it over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, defending champions Chennai Super Kings here, or Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium.

Given the unpredictability factor associated with this form of the game, more so in the case of IPL, it would be a folly to rule out any team, but, in the current scenario, the Chargers are in some spot of bother and it would surely take a great effort from them to disturb the hosts’ momentum.

The only way they can hope to pull it off tomorrow, is by playing out of their skins, and hope luck plays its part.

Sangakkara, who stroked his way to 44 off 32 balls against Rajasthan yesterday, will again shoulder the bulk of the responsibility.

Jean-Paul Duminy will do well to repeat the whirlwind knock he produced against Rajasthan, and Shikhar Dhawan too, would look to carry the momentum of the last match.

Both Duminy and Dhawan slammed brisk half centuries in their last outings, albeit in a losing cause.

As far as bowling is concerned, Dale Steyn took a bit of stick at the Sawai Man Singh track and Kotla is unlikely to offer him anything different, but make no mistake, the South African is still one of the world’s premier fast bowlers.

Legspinner Amit Mishra bowled well in the last match, picking up three wickets, and he can take heart from that performance. Then there is Australian allrounder Daniel Christian, medium pacer Anand Rajan and slow left-arm bowler Ankit Sharma.

But all said and done, a litmus test awaits the Chargers. (PTI)

Gambhir stars in Kolkata comfortable win over Punjab: IPL 2012

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 12:43 PM PDT

Kolkata Knight Riders put up a clinical performance to beat Kings XI Punjab comfortably by eight wickets in an Indian Premier League match at Mohali on Wednesday, with this win KKR shifts to thrid position in the points table.

Riding on a disciplined bowling and fielding display, KKR first restricted Kings XI to 124 for seven after sent into bowl, and then skipper Gautam Gambhir led from the front with a fine unbeaten half century to overwhelm the target with 21 balls in hand.

Gambhir scored an unbeaten 66 off 44 balls with the help of seven fours and a six to hold the chase together and see his side home.

Gambhir was ably supported by Jacques Kallis, who scored an unbetaen 30 off 23 balls. The duo stitched unconquered 53 runs for the third-wicket as KKR scored 127 for two in 16.3 overs.

Earlier, Kings XI batsmen lost wickets at regular intervals to be restricted to the modest total after opting to bat at the PCA stadium.

Captain Adam Gilchrist, who retired hurt in the sixth over with a right hamstring problem only to return later to drag his side out of trouble, top-scored with an unbeaten 40, while Shaun Marsh made a 30-ball 33 with the help of four boundaries.

Kings XI batsmen struggled from the onset against a determined KKR bowling line up and it could be gauged from the fact that only three of their batters could manage double figures.

Wily West Indian off-spinner Sunil Narine (2 for 24) and Brett Lee (2 for 26) starred with the ball for KKR, sharing four wickets between them. Laxmipathy Balaji (1/20) and Rajat Bhatia (1/23) also picked up a wicket each for the visitors.

KKR’s started their run chase on a blistering pace, racing on to their fifty inside the sixth over.

Brendon McCullum (15) was the initial aggressor as he clobbered Praveen Kumar for two boundaries in the first over.

KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir matched his partner stroke by stroke and welcomed Harmeet Singh with a huge six over mid-wicket and a four in the bowler’s opening over.

After the initial burst, McCullum found boundaries hard to come by, which finally led to his dismissal. Struggling to score freely, the Kiwi hit a Piysuh Chawla’s (2/19) short, way down the leg side delivery straight to Dimitri Mascarenhas at short fine-leg, but not before stitching a 53-run opening stand with Gambhir.

Chawla picked up his second wicket four overs later when Manvinder Bisla (11) dragged a delivery on to his stumps.

Gambhir, on the other hand, played a calm and composed innings and notched up his half century in just 36 balls.

In Kallis, Gambhir found a perfect partner as they duo went about their business in style.

Kallis struck little-kwown Bhargav Bhatt for back-to-back four and a six to finish off the run chase in emphatic fashion.

Earlier, Kings XI’s last year’s hero, Paul Valthaty once again disappointed as he fell early, outside edging a Lee delivery to Bisla behind the stumps in the third over.

To make matters worse for Kings XI, Gilchrist had to retired hurt in the sixth over.

Kings XI failed to get a substantial partnership as Mandeep Singh (6), Marsh, David Hussey (10), Paras Dogra (6) and Mascarenhas (9) all departed in quick intervals.

Marsh’s dismissal in the 14th over, however, turned out to be a little controversial.

The left-hander underedged an attempted cut off a Lee delivery which just seemed to have carried to Bisla behind the wicket. But the batsmen was not satisfied and walked away only after checking with the keeper.

The dismissal also brought Kings XI owner Preity Zinta on to the ground as she was not satisfied with the decision. She, however, left the field only after Gilchrist intevened.

Towards the end, Gilchrist and Chawla (9) tried their level best to shoot up the run rate but failed.

Gambhir: We have a quality side and today we played to our potential. I think we have five quality bowlers in our line up. The way Lee Kallis and Rajat bowled was brilliant. We have played an extra game compared to other teams so we need to keep winning. I think the bowling today was the high point. I honestly believe my man of the match is Rajat Bhatia for the way he bowled today.

Gambhir is the Man of the Match

Gilchrist: My injury disturbed the momentum of the innings and took my batting out of the equation for a bit. It was a nice wicket but their bowlers bowled some tight line and restricted us well. You win a couple and lose a couple, it is that sort of a competition. It is important that we bounce back.

Gilchrist: We’ve trained hard and we’re playing the same opponent twice in a row, which is good. Looks like a really nice track at the moment. Nothing is over until the last ball, the last few results have been extraodrindary. It’s an even battle now. More grass on this than the other wickets in India, but it’s not as much as a couple of games back. It’s not a traditional Indian wicket. Valthaty returns for Bipul Sharma.

Gambhir: The last game is history and we have to move on. We have potential in the dressing room. We can’t end up losing such matches as we did recently. We have to be strong at times and have to turn it around. We would have bowled first. Hopefully we do well in the first 6 overs. We’ve not played as a unit. Sometimes the bowlers have done a good job but the batsmen have not complemented them. I thought we should have won the previous game but hope to turn it around. McCullum and Lee replace Shakib and ten DOeschate.

PCB asks BCCI to host Pakistan’s ‘home’ series

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 06:11 AM PDT

In a rather surprising move, the Pakistan Cricket Board has asked the BCCI to play host to a ‘home’ series of the Pakistan cricket team in the future. According to well-informed sources, the chairman of the Pakistan board, Zaka Ashraf, made the offer to his Indian counterpart, N Srinivasan, on the sidelines of the ICC meeting in Dubai last weekend.

“Ashraf told Srinivasan that Pakistan would be willing to play their future home series on Indian soil if the Indian board was ready to play host,” a source said. “Ashraf also told the Indian board president and ICC president Sharad Pawar that if India agreed to host Pakistan’s ‘home’ matches, the PCB would pay for all the expenses involved in the venture. Clearly Ashraf wants resumption of bilateral cricket with India, and believes if India agrees to play host to Pakistan’s home matches, the ice will break between the two boards.”

Pakistan have been forced to play all their ‘home’ series at neutral venues since 2009 as foreign teams have refused to tour the country because of security concerns. Pakistan have played their home matches mostly in the UAE and even in England and New Zealand, in a bid to ensure that the team is not deprived of international cricket. In August, Pakistan will be playing a ‘home’ one-day international series against Australia in Sri Lanka after the Aussies refused to tour the country.

The Indian board has avoided any bilateral cricket relations with Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. “Ashraf has the backing of the Pakistan government in his endeavours and he apparently had a pleasant discussion with the Indians in Dubai,” the source said.

Recently, Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq also called for the resumption of regular bilateral cricket ties with India, insisting this would prove beneficial not only to both countries, but also to the world of cricket.

Their campaign back on track after back-to-back victories, Kings XI Punjab would look to build on the winning momentum when they clash with Kolkata Knight Riders at their home turf in the Indian Premier League on Wednesday.

After two initial losses, KXIP bounced back with two consecutive victories – one at home against Pune Warriors and the other against tomorrow’s opponents at the Eden Gardens just two days back.

Having beaten the same opponents at their home bastion, though with a narrow two-run margin, KXIP would start tomorrow’s match at the PCA Stadium with more confidence while the Knight Riders would look to make it even score.

Both sides have some things in common as each had to taste two losses in as many games at the beginning before bouncing back.

Like Kings XI (four points from four matches), the Knight Riders (four points from five matches) went on to win the next two games before losing their fifth game.

Another thing the two teams share is the inconsistent form of their top-order batsmen. That includes Kings XI skipper Adam Gilchrist, who made five in the previous match, and is yet to hit a big knock.

His Australian compatriot Shaun Marsh also disappointed in the match against KKR, making just one run. The batting hero of last year’s edition Paul Valthaty has failed to impress so far and did not play the last match.

However, Mandeep Singh looked in good form and David Hussey’s presence in the last game has bolstered the batting, with bowlers Piyush Chawla and Bipul Sharma showing they too can play some useful knocks.

Whether former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who according to Gilchrist had been given a visa last week, features against KKR or not remains to be seen.

Kings XI bowling attack has been improving as the tournament progresses. Though Praveen Kumar has not been a wicket-taking bowler, but he has done the job of containing the batsmen well.

Englishman Dimitri Mascarenhas has also been doing a decent job while medium pacer Harmeet Bansal has been bowling quite intelligently and was instrumental in the win his side tasted in the last match. Young Baroda spinner Bhargav Bhatt and all-round abilities of leg-spinner Piyush Chawla will also come handy for the Punjab team.

For the Knight Riders, too much dependence has been put on the top order, including captain Gautam Gambhir and experienced South African campaigner Jacques Kallis and it’s time for others to step up and be counted.

Gambhir had laid the blame on his middle-order batsmen for his side’s loss to Kings XI after restricting them to 134, saying it’s time they shoulder more responsibility.

As against Kings XI who won their lone home match so far, KKR have managed to win only one game out of three they have played so far at their home ground in Kolkata.

Yusuf Pathan, Manoj Tiwary, Manvinder Bisla and Dutch all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate have the capability to trouble Kings XI bowlers and the team will be hoping they turn the tables against Kings XI.

It will be interesting to see how KKR’s young West Indian spinner Sunil Narine and Bangladeshi spinner Shakib Al Hasan bowl on the Mohali track, known for its bouncy nature.

Narine impressed all with his five-wicket haul against Kings XI and it will be interesting to watch how he is treated by the home side batsmen tomorrow.

In the last match played here on April 12 between Kings XI and Pune Warriors, pacers had dominated, with the home side’s Dimitri Mascarenhas claiming five wickets.

The conditions here last week had been rainy and overcast and similar weather continued to prevail till Tuesday and Wednesday’s weather forecast also predicts cloud cover, with possibility of a spell of rain.

Kings XI Punjab: Adam Gilchrist (Captain), Shaun Marsh, Dimitri Mascarenhas, David Hussey, Praveen Kumar, Bipul Sharma, Piyush Chawla, Parvinder Awana, Azhar Mahmood, James Faulkner, Paul Valthaty, Bhargav Bhatt, Kyle Abbott, Love Ablish, Amit Yadav, Siddharth Chitnis, Ben Cutting, Paras Dogra, Gurkeerat Singh, Harmeet Singh, Ryan Harris, Vikramjeet Malik, Mandeep Singh, David Miller, Abhishek Nayar, Ramesh Powar, Nathan Rimmington, Nitin Saini, Shalabh Srivastava, Sunny Singh.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Gautam Gambhir (Captain), Jacques Kallis, Brett Lee, Brendon McCullum (wk), Lakshmipathy Balaji, Rajat Bhatia, Manvinder Bisla, Iqbal Abdulla, Shakib Al Hasan, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Ryan ten Doeschate, Manoj Tiwary, Jaydev Unadkat, Pradeep Sangwan, Sarabjit Ladda, Debabrata Das, Marchant de Lange, Brad Haddin, Chirag Jani, Eoin Morgan, Sunil Narine, Yusuf Pathan, James Pattinson, Sanju Samson, Iresh Saxena, Shami Ahmed.
