Ganguly: No ground is small for Sehwag so once you get his wicket then it is a big relief. I was relieved when Sehwag got out because until he was there the match could have gone either way. Pietersen’s wicket celebration was an act of relief becuase he was hitting it to the upper tier. My body is alright but I am going to feel it tomorrow.

Sourav Ganguly is the Man of the Match for his allround performance

Sehwag: I think he was behaving like a 33 year old man. I know a lot about him and he knows a lot about me. Still I keep my fingers crossed and hope that Ganguly gets out so that I can use my left arm spinner but I couldn’t at the end.I think I should have stayed on for longer but when you have to chase 190 it becomes difficult. The wicket is good to bat on so I was just trying to hit to my strengths.

Preview: Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab, IPL 5, 22 April 2012

Posted: 21 Apr 2012 11:05 AM PDT

Their campaign stuttering due to continuous batting failures, Mumbai Indians would hope that Sachin Tendulkar comes back and inspires a turnaround when they take on a struggling Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League match on Sunday.

The home team is hoping that Tendulkar, who has seen the action only from the sidelines after getting hit on his finger in the opening game on April 4, returns to the opening slot and gives the top order a much-needed dose of stability.

Mumbai Indians paid the price of reckless batting against Delhi Daredevils as they managed just 92 runs, their second-lowest total in five seasons, to lose their last match comprehensively.

The MI batsmen have to get their act together against a visiting side that itself is placed at the bottom of the points table.

Tendulkar has started practising hard after missing the last four games and his presence, if it comes about, would certainly calm down the jangled nerves of the top order.

Key MI batsmen — Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu and Richard Levi — have all been inconsistent while wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik has been a total failure.

The additional worry for MI is that paceman Lasith Malinga is unlikely to take the field for the second match in succession because of pain in his back.

Whenever MI were in trouble, the team had lobbed the ball to the Sri Lankan sling-arm bowler and he had delivered.

In his absence, the team fielded Australian Clint Mckay without much success against the Daredevils, but the target for the visitors was too small for the bowlers to make any impression.

Munaf Patel has bowled extremely well and is, in fact, the highest wicket taker (10 in four games) for MI this season and he is expected to have Rudra Pratap Singh as back-up in pace for the second game running.

Though Punjab, whose batting has also not clicked in a big way so far, piled on their biggest score (163) of the season, they still ended up losing after getting a few early wickets through Parwinder Awana.

Captain Adam Gilchrist was absent due to hamstring injury and is set to miss tomorrow’s game too.

It was an big blow to Punjab’s campaign as the former Australia keeper had just got among the runs when he made 40 against KKR, and in his absence David Hussey led the side.

The bright spot for Punjab is the fact that Azhar Mahmood, the former Pakistan player but now an England player, was able to join his team after visa-related issues delayed his arrival.

He immediately contributed with the bat in making a quick-fire 33 off 14 balls against Bangalore which aided the team to post their highest score of the season.

Overall, the Punjab batting has not really lived up to the mark and the visitors would be eager to put behind the two back-to-back defeats at home.

Paul Valthaty, the Mumbai-born opener who was a sensation in IPL-4, has been the biggest flop of this season. As compared to the phenomenal 463 runs he had scored in the last season, he has mustered only 34 in six games.

The team has depended mostly on Dmitri Mascarenhas, who was given a break with Azhar available in the previous game, Praveen Kumar, Manmeet Singh and leg spinner Piyush Chawla in the bowling department ? on paper not a formidable attack by any means.

Punjab would need to take early wickets against MI to fancy their chances of halting the losing streak.

The two teams would line up after two days at Mohali to have another go at each other. (PTI)

du Plessis guides Chennai to last ball win over Rajasthan Royals: IPL 2012

Posted: 21 Apr 2012 10:15 AM PDT

Faf du Plessis stroked his way to a 52-ball 73 but Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had to wait till the very last ball before eking out a seven-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Chennai on Saturday, pushing them up to the third position in the IPL points table.

Needing two runs off the last ball of the match, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni clipped Stuart Binny off his pads to help the Super Kings overhaul the target of 147 set by Rajasthan.

Du Plessis was the main scorer as he smashed six fours and two sixes to set the tone for the defending champions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

This was the Super Kings’ fourth win from seven matches while Rajasthan, who had four wins prior to this match, suffered their third defeat in this edition of the cash-rich Twenty20 league.

Chasing a rather modest total, the Super Kings were off to a sedate start, by IPL’s standards, as openers du Plessis and Subramaniam Badrinath (15) added 55 runs in eight overs.

Slow left-arm spinner Brad Hogg gave the visitors their first breakthrough when he had Badrinath stumped by Shreevats Goswami with a ball that had a bit of flight.

The dismissal, though, hardly had any effect on du Plessis as he continued with his attacking game and, along with Suresh Raina, added 61 runs for the second wicket, much to delight of the home crowd.

Raina scored 26 runs in 24 balls and hit three fours.

While he started hitting fours from the second over, du Plessis struck his first six in the seventh over, when Ashok Menaria’s delivery was lofted over the extra-cover region.

The South African struck his second six, against medium pacer Siddharth Trivedi, before Kevon Cooper brought to an end his stay by having the batsman caught by Goswami.

Cooper then sent back Raina, thanks to Ajinkya Rahane’s excellent catch in the deep, but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja denied the visitors any further success while taking Chennai home.

Earlier, the Super Kings rode on a disciplined bowling display to restrict Rajasthan to a modest total despite a half century by Owais Shah on a swealtering day.

Electing to bat on what looked like a slow pitch, the Rajasthan Royals batsmen started off in brilliant fashion, scoring 15 runs off Dwayne Bravo’s first over.

They were 34 for no loss by the fourth over before Ravichandran Ashwin put the brakes on the scoring rate.

Ashwin gave his team a vital breakthrough when he dismissed an in-form Rahane (15) off the third ball of his spell.

Rahane looked in good nick, opening his account with a straight bat cover drive off Nuwan Kulasekara. The batsman then dismissed Bravo thorough mid-off and pulled the second delivery of his over through the vacant square-leg region to stamp his authority on the Chennai bowlers.

He, however, got out while trying to go over mid-off only managing to give a simple catch to Kulasekara.

Rahane’s dismissal brought Shah in the middle — the English recruit took seven balls to open his account before hitting Shadab Jakati over the mid-on fence to bring the second six of the innings.

Rahul Dravid, at the other end, was going nicely, hitting three boundaries and a six before his 26-run inning was cut short by Jakati. (PTI)

Sehwag: Nadeem is a very good young lad and knows what to do. He is a quick learner and he bowls according to the situation. KP and Mahela are giving me advises and it’s an honour to lead the team. Delhi crowd is superb and they came even last year even though we didn’t do well. It’s a good track to bat on but it will remain same. We chased in the last couple of games so we want to bowl first. KP was tremendous in the previous game and hopefully we can continue. Agarkar is out, Negi – a left arm spinner – is in.

Ganguly: It’s been fine. We’ve played well. The los in Bangalore was unfortunate and we played well in Chennai but couldn’t win. It’s a very good crowd, I belive it’s a sell out. It’s always going to be like this in India and it’s good play in front of packed stadiums. I always enjoy beating Viru (smiles). T20 is anybody’s game, we can win this one. We have played well and hopefully we can continue. Alfonso Thomas is in for Marlon Samuels.

du Plessis: We played here a couple of days ago and we knew the conditions. We had to get a good start and we did that. It is important to continue good form. I try to be relaxed. With our batting line up, we knew that we can score big towards the death.

du Plessis is the Man of the Match for his match winning knock.

Dravid: Credit to Chennai’s bowlers, they did really well in the middle overs. The kind of balls Binny bowled in the final over, he was brilliant. There are a lot of positives. Some of our guys are not as experienced as the Chennai players.

Dhoni: Games like this turn your way if you keep your calm. You need to believe in your assets. Kulasekara bowled really well in the death. His overs were crucial. We didn’t really have the game in control in the last ball. And if the game goes into the super over, you need to back yourself. It is really important to win home games. We know the conditions better and we have done well to bounce back

Dravid: When you get a few wins under your belt you want to keep your guys hungry and motivated. When you are up against the big boys you need to keep your cricket smart. I know that I am not going to have a lot of cricket after the IPL so I just try and focus on this and I know I don’t have to think about a Test series after this. Yes Shane and I stay in touch but he just asks me about how its going with the team and wishes us luck. Might as well keep the guys rested later on. It looks like a good wicket so we would like to bat on it and set a good total. Against a side like Chennai you probably need more than the par score. Kevon Cooper comes in for Johan Botha since he is fit now. Stuart Binny gets a game and Goswami too comes in for Dishant Yagnik.

Dhoni: We are doing the right things right. IN the last game the last few overs were very good, the catching was very good and we have been executing our plans well. We were looking to bat as well but the wicket shouldn’t change much so it shouldn’t be much of an issue. Heat is a concern but we are more used to it compared to the visiting teams.

Table-toppers Delhi Daredevils will seek to extend their three-match winning streak when they face Pune Warriors in their Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Saturday.

Daredevils registered their fourth win in the season here Thursday night against Deccan Chargers and are leading the points table with eight points from five matches. Pune Warriors are fourth with six points from six matches.

Daredevils vice-captain Mahela Jayawardene wants to keep the momentum going by winning as many matches as they can. The Sri Lankan said all teams are suffering from fatigue due to the lengthy nature of the tournament.

“We got the momentum now. It’s good to keep it going. We have to play good cricket because we know we will have some pretty tough days on the road. As long we are winning we want to play as many matches as possible,” said Jayawardene.

Jayawardene also indicated that some of the key players could be rested as part of Daredevils’ rotation. He also said that many players are warming the bench and they will also get their chance.

Asked how difficult it will be for the team management to decide the combination of the team when Australian opener David Warner joins the squad, Jayawardene said: “It is a healthy headache to have rather than having not many players to choose from. KP (Kevin Pietersen) is leaving end of the month for his season so Warner will come and join the team. Plus we’ve got many players sitting on the bench. So it’s all about rotation.

“If we feel we need to give a player a couple of days off then we give a break and utilise the bench strength. We have Andre (Russell) on the bench and couple of others. So if Morne (Morkel) requires a break we will give him,” he said.

Daredevils have been the best team in the tournament so far. They have the firepower in both the departments to lift the IPL title for the first time. Barring their only loss in the tournament to Royal Challengers Bangalore, they have won all their matches by big margins.

Skipper Virender Sehwag, Pietersen and Jayawardene form their formidable batting attack. Pietersen’s maiden IPL century here Thursday night bears testimony to the Englishman’s form this season.

Daredevils’ pace attack has been the best in the tournament while young left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem has been phenomenal. Their South African pacer Morne Morkel is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 12 wickets while Nadeem has bowled miserly.

Meanwhile, Pune Warriors will be hoping to end their two-match losing streak. Under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly, Pune Warriors started well with convincing wins against Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab.

They even bounced back well to beat Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets after suffering crushing defeat against Kings XI in the away clash. But losses to Royal Challengers and Super Kings in their last two matches have left Ganguly with more questions to answer.

The loss against Royal Challengers must have hurt Pune Warriors the most as it went down the wire before Saurabh Tiwary hit a six off the last bowl to steal a thriller. Royal Challengers needed 21 runs off the last over but Tiwary and AB De Villiers smashed Ashish Nehra in the last over to take the team home.

Pune Warriors also came under fire Thursday night in Chennai against Super Kings. Their batsmen also got starts but couldn’t convert them into big innings as they fell short by 13 runs while chasing a target of 164.

A captain’s knock from Ganguly is long due while highly rated Manish Pandey, who was the first Indian to hit a century in the IPL, hasn’t lived up to his reputation. The stage is set for Pune Warriors to recover their lost ground. (IANS)

Preview: Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals, IPL 5, 21 April 2012

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 02:30 PM PDT

Chennai Super Kings, pepped up by their 13-run win against Pune Warriors in an Indian Premier League tie on Thursday, will be looking to join the front-running pack when they face Rajasthan Royals on Saturday.

With six points from as many games against Rajasthan’s eight from six, the Super Kings would be pleased as punch at the manner in which they cantered to win against the Pune Warriors while showcasing their all-round strength.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni spoke about the need to sustain the winning momentum if the Super Kings hope to remain on course for a berth in the play-offs, but Rahul Dravid’s Rajasthan Royals may not be as easy picks as the Warriors were.

Since taking charge from the retired Shane Warne, Dravid, who recently quit international and first-class cricket, has proven to be an able leader as the Royals promise to go all the way in the tournament if their early form is anything to go by.

As for Super Kings, it has been a typical run thus far with a series of defeats marking their early outings before they got their campaign back on track with a few solid wins that underlined the team’s collective potential.

The South African duo of opener Francois du Plessis and seamer Albie Morkel have been the key figures in the Super Kings ranks with Dhoni himself living up to his reputation of a clinical finisher with the bat.

On Thursday, the Super Kings were without Morkel who was away in South Africa attending a friend’s funeral, but the team covered up nicely for the all-rounder’s absence. However, Dhoni would be happier with a bit more discipline in the bowling backed by some sharp fielding.

As for Royals, Dravid has been the critical figure around whom the team has performed admirably so far. As well as Dravid batted at the top of the order, it has been Ajinkya Rahane who has been a revelation this season with a series of high scores, including a century while totalling 304 runs from six games.

Also lending steel to the line-up are middle-order batsman Owais Shah and all-rounder Brad Hodge, both of whom have displayed good form while providing the side with so many more options.

On paper, the game appears to be a contest between equals, but the Super Kings, given their home record, should be fancying their chances.
