Gambhir, Kallis help Kolkata thrash Bangalore by 47 runs: IPL 2012

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 12:25 PM PDT

Late charge by mercurial Chris Gayle (86 off 58 balls) went in vain as Kolkata Knight Riders thrashed Royal Challengers Bangalore by 47 runs in their return leg Indian Premier League fixture at Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Gayle smacked six maximums and seven boundaries in his another brilliant knock but it turn out to be too little too late. The rising asking rate was too much for the Royal Challengers batsmen as they managed only 143/6 in their 20 overs.

Kolkata spinners had a field day as they didn’t allowed Bangalore to cut loose in the entire match except for Gayle storm in the end. West Indies spinner Sunil Narine was the most miser among the lots as he conceded only 11 runs in his four overs and took the wicket of Mayank Aggarwal.

Yusuf Pathan (1-19) too finished with impressive economy rate of 4.75 in his four overs, whereas Jacques Kallis took two important Bangalore wickets in his 4 overs spell.

Chasing a massive 191-run target, Bangalore lost wickets at crucial junctures and didn’t look in the chase during the entire match.

Rajat Bhatia scalped Saurabh Tiwary (19) in the 13th over to reduce Bangalore to 77/4 in 12.5 overs. Tiwary put on 43 runs for the fourth wicket with Gayle and hit a six and a four in his 22-ball innings before the left-hander mistime Bhatia’s delivery.

Bangalore chase started on the wrong foot as they lost three top-order batsmen inside six overs.

Jacque Kallis struck twice in consecutive deliveries to dismiss in-form AB de Villiers (0) and Virat Kohli (18) in the sixth over as Bangalore struggled in their run chase.

Kohli hit three boundaries in his sedate 19-ball innings.

Spinner Yusuf Pathan gave Kolkata an early breakthrough when he dismissed Tillakaratne Dilshan (2) in the very first over to reduce Bangalore to 2/1 in 0.6 overs.

Electing to bat, skipper Gautam Gambhir smashed 93 off 51 balls to help Knight Riders post massive 191-run target for Royal Challengers.

Gambhir hit five huge sixes and nine boundaries in his whirlwind knock to lead the hosts from the front. The skipper added impressive 95 runs with Brendon McCullum (43) – their highest opening stand for the season – to set a brilliant platform for the latter batsmen.

McCullum played a perfect foil for Gambhir as he smashed eight boundaries in his 37-ball knock.

Veteran Jacques Kallis too came to party in the end as the South African batsman smacked three massive sixes and a four in his quick-fire 27-ball 41 innings.

For Bangalore, pacer Vinay Kumar (2-31) took two Kolkata wickets whereas skipper Daniel Vettori (1-29) and Zaheer Khan (1-48) claim a wicket each.

Kolkata skipper completed his fifty off 28 balls soon after McCullum’s wicket. The left-hander hit a six and eight boundaries in his quick-fire knock.

Riding on Gambhir’s exploits Knight Riders raced to hundred in just 11.3 overs.

Bangalore captain Daniel Vettori clean bowled compatriot McCullum in the 11th over to provide his team a crucial breakthrough. McCullum hit two consecutive fours off Vettori before the latter got better of him.

Gambhir and McCullum started the Kolkata innings aggressively. The openers added 46 runs in the first powerplay overs as Kolkata raced to fifty in 6.2 overs.

Earlier, Knight Riders skipper Gambhir won the toss and decided to bat against Royal Challengers.

Kolkata bring in Iqbal Abdulla in place of half-fit Laxmipathy Balaji in the playing XI.

Daniel Vettori is back to lead the Bangalore side, after his injury concerns in the previous game, as he replaces Andrew McDonald in the squad.

Kolkata vs Bangalore Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 12:13 PM PDT

Gambhir: It was just one of those days where everything went off the middle of my bat. The way Sunil bowled was brilliant, he bowled four overs for almost nothing. We had a lot of discussions over what the Eden wicket is like, it is a decent wicket. It is just the quality we have in our side, the way Brendon and Kallis batted and the way we bowled was very good.

Gautam Gambhir is the Man of the Match.

Vettori: You always look back on those dropped catches as things that could have changed the game. We go home to Bangalore for a week and play on a ground we know really well and enjoy playing on.

Chris Gayle: We are disappointed. 191 was tough and we didn’t start well. We have a long way to go, hopefully we shall pick ourselves up. The new ball was coming onto the bat nicely but in the middle overs the ball was stopping and coming. Their spinners were brilliant. I wanted to hit Billy (says jokingly), no offence but glad it didn’t hit the umpire. We have two home games now, hopefully we can win both.

Gambhir: It is a dream come true to be playing at the Eden Gardens. We want to focus on our game and bring smiles on the faces of these people. I don’t think there is any fear, we have potential players and we have done well until now. Hopefully we can peak at the right time. We would want to put runs on board and hope our spinners can do the job for us. We want to go out and play freely. Iqbal Abdulla comes in place of Balaji.

Vettori: The wicket will assist spinners, hopefully I’ll do well today. It is too difficult to pick the four overseas players. Our batting has been outstanding. This is a huge game. We realise that this is the game we need to win else we will fall back again. We would have batted first as well, the wicket might turn later on. We need to adapt well. We are going in with the same team that played Rajasthan. Dilshan, Gayle and AB have carried our batting in the last few games and all three are playing today.

IPL 2012 Preview: Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 28 April 2012

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 05:30 PM PDT

A cracker of a contest is on the cards when a resurgent Royal Challengers Bangalore take on Kolkata Knight Riders in their return leg Indian Premier League fixture at Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Both the teams’ last fixtures at their respective home grounds were washed out and they would pray that the weather God does not play spoilsport again tomorrow, even as the local Met department has forecast rain and thundershowers in next 48 hours.

The Bangalore outfit might have lost to KKR in the first leg but their campaign was back on track after three wins on the trot and both teams stay equal on league table with nine points from eight matches each at half-way stage of IPL 5.

One man KKR would need to watch out for would be Chris Gayle who has been in ominous form at the top of RCB batting and he would look to blow away the consistent Kolkata attack, something he had done in his last outing at the Eden, smashing a 55-ball 102 not out with seven sixes sent out of the park.

After a quiet start, Gayle has hit form with a 48-ball 81 studded with eight sixes in RCB’s win over Pune Warriors. He followed it up with another sizzling knock of 56-ball 87 in his side’s win over Kings XI Punjab.

Against his former franchise that chose not to retain him after the third season, the explosive Caribbean opener, who has recovered from an upset stomach, would look to prove a point. With A B de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan in equally devastating form, the RCB batting would look to post or chase down a big total.

Skipper Daniel Vettori has recovered from a niggle that had forced him to sit out in their rain-marred last match against Chennai Super Kings.

One area of concern for RCB though was that their foreign recruits have been instrumental in the side’s wins and their domestic players like Virat Kohli, Saurabh Tiwary, Mayank Agarwal and Mohammad Kaif were yet to hit form.

In the bowling department, fresh from his 4/19 against Rajasthan, left-arm spinner K P Apanna would look to relish the slow condition here at the Eden as skipper Daniel Vettori would spearhead the spin attack that also boasts of Muttiah Muralitharan.

Young fast bowler Harshal Patel has impressed all and sundry in the limited outings he has had and is expected to blossom in the company of experienced Zaheer Khan and R Vinay Kumar as the RCB seemed to be one of the most balanced outfits in this season.

KKR, on the other hand, are yet to take full advantage of their tailor-made home conditions, having won only once from three matches played here with one, the last one against Deccan Chargers, being abandoned due to heavy rains.

If the bowlers like Laxmipathy Balaji, Shakib Al Hasan and Sunil Narine have been winning matches for KKR, their batting is yet to click barring one captain’s knock by Gautam Gambhir who scored a 66 not out in their win over Kings XI Punjab at Mohali.

That only two batsmen — the other being Manoj Tiwary — have scored half-centuries may sound alarming especially with their roster boasting some big names, including Jacque Kallis, Brendon McCullum and Yusuf Pathan.

Yusuf, who was instrumental in Rajasthan Royals’ triumph in the inaugural edition, has aggregated 29 runs from seven matches so far this season, averaging a woeful 5.80.

With batting lacking in consistency, KKR management may have a look at their English recruit Eoin Morgan who has not played a single match so far this edition. Known to be a finisher, Morgan should come in handy for the topsy-turvy KKKR batting.

Balaji has recovered from a hamstring injury and so is experienced local all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla who should be back in contention after a recovering from injury. (PTI)

IPL 2012 Preview: Chennai Super Kings Vs Kings XI Punjab, 28 April 2012

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 03:30 PM PDT

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) would look to put behind the disappointment of their dismal performance against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the last game and make amends when they take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Chennai on Saturday.

Punjab would be eager to forget their last match when they were thrashed by the Mumbai Indians as Ambati Rayudu (34) and Robin Peterson (16) creamed leg-spinner Piyush Chawla for 27 runs in the penultimate over to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

But it would be a difficult proposition for the low-on-confidence Punjab outfit to tame the ‘Men in Yellow’ in their own den.

Not just their last match, as it is, Kings XI team’s performance has been cause of worry.

Having lost five of their eight matches so far in the tournament, they are fully aware that they would have to play out of their skins if they intend to topple the hosts.

Their misery is compounded by the absence of skipper Adam Gilchrist, out with a hamstring injury, who is still a doubtful starter for tomorrow’s match.

But KXIP would be banking heavily on stand-in-skipper David Hussey, whose unbeaten 68-run knock in the last match helped Kings XI post a competitive total against Mumbai Indians.

Besides Hussey, another Australian Shaun Marsh has also been amongst runs but the other batsmen require to take the centre stage in order to give some boost to Kings XI’s batting.

They would also be hoping for the bowlers, especially Chawla, to raise their game and deliver.

On the other hand, Super Kings will be riding high on confidence following back-to-back victories over Pune Warriors India and Rajasthan Royals before their last match against Royal Challengers Bangalore was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy rains.

Defending champions though have had mixed fortunes so far in the league with four wins and three losses.

But such a situation is not alien to the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side. In the last IPL also Super Kings fought back brilliantly by winning seven out of their last nine league matches to qualify for the play offs.

South African duo of opener Francois du Plessis and all-rounder Albie Morkel have been key players for the Super Kings with Dhoni himself living up to his reputation of a clinical finisher with the bat.

Du Plessis has been a revelation with the bat.

But the form of Suresh Raina is matter of grave concern.

He has been off colour in this edition till now, scoring just 138 runs from seven innings with a top score of 36. His failure has disappointed Super Kings much in the absence of Michael Hussey, who is away on national duty, making the middle-order little bit shaky.

The Chennai team, however, will approach the match as favourites. But Dhoni would look for a bit more discipline in the bowling department backed by some sharp fielding. (PTI)
