Bangalore (RCB) vs Chennai (CSK) match called-off due to rain: IPL 2012

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 11:50 AM PDT

The return leg match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was called off after heavy downpour ruled out any possibility of having even a curtailed match.

The two on-field umpires Sudhir Asnani and Billy Doctrove called off the match at 11 pm as persistent downpour played a spoilsport.

Both CSK and RCB got a point each from the game and have nine points from eight matches respectively. With points split, CSK moved up to the third spot while Bangalore are placed fourth in the nine-team table.

Earlier, umpires Doctrove and Asnani inspected the pitch twice at &: 45 pm and 8:15 pm and decided to start full quota over match at 9 pm.

RCB’s stand-in captain Virat Kohli opted to field after winning the toss. Just as the match was about to begin, the heavens opened up once again and this time it was fairly consistent drizzle. It only got worse with passage of time as the frustrated spectators at the Chinnaswamy headed back home. (PTI)

IPL 2012: Bangalore (RCB) opts to field against Chennai (CSK)

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 09:06 AM PDT

Toss: Royal Challengers Bangalore have won the toss and elected to field

Kohli: Vettori has a himstring niggle so I am taking over and McDonald also comes in for Dan. We will try our best in this game, Chennai is a really good team and we saw that in our last clash against him. It would be good to make it 4 times in a row though. The grass isn’t going to make much of a difference but I think the wicket might have some moisture on it which should help the bowlers. With McDonald coming in we have an extra batsman at number seven.

Dhoni: The stats just show that we are executing our plans well it doesn’t assure us victory in the future games though so we just have to play well on the day. We want to get wins under our belt now so that we don’t have to play catchup in the tournament later. Our fielding and catching has improved. We need to execute our plans against Gayle. We need to take him out or he will take you out of the game.

Rayudu, Rohit snatch win from Kings XI Punjab: IPL 2012

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 08:42 AM PDT

Ambati Rayudu (34) and Robin Peterson (16) creamed leg-spinner Piyush Chawla for 27 runs in the penultimate over to snatch a stunning four-wicket victory from the jaws of defeat against Kings XI Punjab in an Indian Premier League match.

Mumbai were in a precarious position after 18 overs, as they needed 32 from the last 12 balls but some incredible hitting by Peterson and Rayudu helped the visitors chase the 169-run target with one ball to spare.

Riding on the heroics of David Hussey’s 40-ball 68 and his undefeated 89-run partnership with David Miller (34 off just 17 balls) for the third wicket had helpd Punjab put up a competitve 168 for three after electing to bat.

Peterson smacked a hapless Chawla for two fours and a six in first three balls of the 19th over and then Rayudu hoicked the leg-spinner for two sixes off the last two balls to change the complexion of the game.

The platform for the victory, though was set by Rohit Sharma, who hit a blistering 50 off just 30 balls.

Rohit had provided the Mumbai-chase much needed impetus with his inspiring knock, containing three sixes and as many as fours but his dismissal off Parvinder Awana tilted the game in the favour of the hosts.

Mumbai needed 36 off 17 balls when Rohit was caught at backward point by Azhar Mahmood. Awana removed rival skippper Harbhajan Singh two balls later, loading the dice heavily in favour of his side.

However, Rayudu and Peterson took it on themselves and stole an unlikely victory with tremendous hitting.

Electing to bat, KXIP slumped to 46 for two in the eighth over before Hussey steadied the ship. Hussey found an able ally in David Miller who played a cameo of 17-ball 34 not out as KXIP compensated for a slow start with some big hitting towards the end.

Hussey hit four fours and an equal number of sixes in his knock while Miller smashed three sixes and a four. The duo, who came together in the 13th over, put on 89 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket stand from 7.1 overs.

For Mumbai, James Franklin, R P Singh and Clint McKay grabbed a wicket each. McKay, Harbhajan Singh, Munaf Patel and Kieron Pollard came in for some stick from KXIP batsmen.

Munaf, who had bowled a disciplined line in his first two overs, found himself at the receiving end in the later part of KXIP innings as Hussey and Miller were in full flow.

Miller hit two sixes in the 18th over bowled by Munaf. He repeated it by hitting two sixes of the final two deliveries of the innings bowled by the same bowler.

Earlier, Kings XI openers Nitin Saini (17) and Mandeep Singh (22) gave their side to a good start. Mandeep, in particular was looking in good knick, scoring at a brisk pace. However, both got out while trying to accelerate the scoring rate.

R P Singh gave KXIP the first blow when he had Mandeep, who made 22 of 16 balls including four hits to the fence, caught behind stumps when the batsman tried to give a charge to the bowler.

After Mandeep’s exit in the sixth over at 35 for one, Saini (17) too, did not last long falling to Australian pacer McKay with Munaf in the deep barely holding on to the catch.

Mandeep also hit three boundaries off McKay in the third over.

Australian Shaun Marsh, who played a brilliant innings in the last match against Mumbai, and Hussey steadied KXIP innings after the two openers were back in the pavilion.

Marsh, however, did not look in his prime touch with Mumbai bowlers bothering him on a few occasions.

In contrast to his batting in the previous match, Marsh consumed 26 balls for his 17 runs that included one four.

Trying to break the shackles, the left-hander handed out an easy catch to Harbhajan Singh giving Franklin his first scalp.

MI had brought in Robin Petersen and McKay in their playing eleven, leaving out Pragyan Ojha. Punjab came into the match having beaten Mumbai by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Punjab have so far won three out of their seven games while Mumbai have three wins from six outings.

Kings XI Punjab Vs Mumbai Indians Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 08:23 AM PDT

Hussey: Fantastic game of cricket, they played pretty nicely didn’t they? Anything can happen in T20 cricket and anything did. I’m not sure if Peterson is a left hander or a right hander, that penultimate over changed things. You try and bowl your best bowler in the penultimate over and I though Chawla bowled well before that. Chawla was great for us today and we’ll back him.

Harbhajan: There were too many runs on the board, when I went in, I had to strike from the first ball but it didn’t happen. Rayudu was brilliant, he has been an exceptional player for Mumbai Indians and I have no doubts that he can play for Mumbai. It was great batting by Rayudu and Peterson was terrific. It was a great win for us, we have a team song which we sing when we win games like this.

Rayudu: When I went in, there were 6 overs. I was planning that even if I play 8-9 balls I could take them on in the next 8-9 balls. Rohit was brilliant, everyone knows that. I’m getting used to batting at every number, which is helping us. I’m happy to be fielding, all credit to Sachin sir, he has been helping me out a lot in the last few days.

Rayudu is the Man of the Match

Hussey: We have played pretty consistent cricket over the last two matches. Mumbai is probably the best team in the competition so lets see we can do today. I think we are playing our best cricket when we bat first. It looks like a litte bit two paced this pitch. Yes Awana has been really good for us so hopefully he can restrict Rohit Sharma again. We are going in unchanged for this match.

Harbhajan: One thing good about this competition is you get an opportunity to come back the very next game. I don’t want to blame anyone for our previous loss. At the end of the day we are a very talented side and we just need to be focussed and we can come out on top. It is important to get runs on the board because then it becomes easierfor the bowlers. We have got very talented batsmen in our side and hopefully they will do well today. I trust the talent in my side and I think we can do well in this game. Hopefully Rohit can do well today, he has a lot of talent. Clint McKay and Peterson come in for us. Ojha misses out.

IPL 2012 Preview: Chennai Super Kings Vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 25 April 2012

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 05:30 PM PDT

An intense battle is on the cards as two in-form teams in star-studded Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lock horns in an important Indian Premier League encounter, on Wednesday.

Both RCB and CSK have hit form after a slow start to the tournament. While RCB has registered three back-to-back wins after a few defeats, CSK will be riding high on confidence following victories over Pune Warriors India and Rajsathan Royals in their last two matches.

But Wednesday’s match at the M Chinnaswmay Stadium occupies special significance for RCB as they will be eyeing revenge following their lost to CSK in Chennai earlier this month.

And the hosts, who would be desperate after the last-over loss to CSK in the away match, have the ammunition to dismantle the visitors’ fort at home conditions.

RCB, who lost to CSK and Rajasthan Royals in a row, have improved a lot as the tournament progressed, winning three games on the trot and would be hoping to continue their unbeaten stretch.

RCB would be taking heart from the fact that they pulled off an easy win against Rajasthan Royals in their own backyard last night without much contributions from explosive Chris Gayle (4) and Virat Kohli (16).

To RCB’s delight, Tillakaratne Dilshan and A B de Villiers have regained their lost touch, which should sound warning bells in the opposition camps.

Dilshan returned to form in style, scoring a match-winning unbeaten 76 and together with AB de Villiers, who scored a quickfire unbeaten 59 off just 23 balls, shared an unconquered 122-run fourth wicket partnership to propel RCB to 189 for three against Rajasthan last night.

But Virat Kohli’s dismal form will be the only concern for RCB skipper Daniel Vettori ahead of the CSK tie.

Kohli have so far disappointed in the tournament, scoring just 129 runs from seven games, and the right-hander would be desperate to hit form and silence his critics sooner than later.

After his continuous failures at the number three position, Vettori yesterday promoted Kohli to open the innings with Dilshan instead of Gayle. But the move did not yield any fruitful result as not only Kohli disappointed again, Gayle also turned out to be a failure at the number four position.

So far, RCB’s foreign recruits have been instrumental in the team’s wins, but now it is high time for the domestic Indian players like Mayank Agarwal, Mohammad Kaif and Saurabh Tiwary to hit form and contribute.

On the bowling front, K P Appanna’s four-wicket haul against Rajasthan last night have added arsenal into RCB’s bowling attack, especially the spin department which will be spearheaded by skipper Vettori himself and also has Muttiah Muralitharan.

Young fast bowler Harshal Patel has impressed all and sundry in the limited outings and is expected to blossom in the company of experienced Zaheer Khan.

Title holders CSK, on the other hand, have had mixed fortunes so far in the league with four wins and three losses and are placed fifth on the table.

But such a situation is not alien to the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side. In the last IPL also CSK fought back brilliantly by winning seven out of their last nine league matches to qualify for the play offs.

South African duo of opener Francois du Plessis and all-rounder Albie Morkel have been key players for CSK with Dhoni himself living up to his reputation of a clinical finisher with the bat.

Du Plessis has been a revelation with the bat, but the form of Suresh Raina is matter of grave concern.

Raina has been off colour in the fifth edition, scoring just 138 runs from seven innings with a top score of 36. His failure has disappointed CSK much in the absence of Michael Hussey, who is away on national duty, making the middle-order little bit shaky.

CSK, however, will approach the match as favourites after beating RCB in this year’s highest scoring match, which underlines their batting strength.

But Dhoni would look for a bit more discipline in the bowling department backed by some sharp fielding. (PTI)

Teams:

CSK (Probable): Wriddhiman Saha, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Subramaniam Badrinath, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Dwayne Bravo, Doug Bollinger, Ravichandran Ashwin, Nuwan Kulasekara, Shadab Jakati.

RCB (Probable): Tillakaratne Dilshan, Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers (wk), Saurabh Tiwary, Daniel Vettori (c), Zaheer Khan, R Vinay Kumar, KP Appanna, Harshal Patel.

IPL 2012 Preview: Mumbai Indians Vs Kings XI Punjab, 25 April 2012

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 03:30 PM PDT

Mumbai Indians will be keen to get their IPL campaign back on track when they face an upbeat Kings XI Punjab in an important encounter, on Wednesday.

It will be payback time for Harbhajan Singh-led Mumbai Indians who were shocked by one of the weakest teams in the competition and that too on former’s home turf.

Sachin Tendulkar may have scored just 23 against KXIP on Sunday but his presence at the top order gives the much-needed stability required.

The batting legend, who had missed few games after getting hit on his finger in the opening game on April 4, was involved in a 51-run opening stand with Kiwi left-hander James Franklin before the maestro was run out misjudging a non-existing second run.

Earlier after Tendulkar’s exit, Mumbai had tried different combinations in the four matches, but only 37 runs were produced for the opening wicket.

Despite Franklin’s blistering knock of 79 off 51 balls, MI failed to defend 163, with KXIP’s Aussie batsman Shaun Marsh striking form scoring unbeaten 68 of just 40 ballsnot to forget impressive bowling by Delhi lad Parvinder Awana and India discard Piyush Chawla.

MI’s key batsmen Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu have been inconsistent and in Sunday’s match, Sharma (2) was out caught in 10th over playing an irresponsible shot off Awana when he had faced just five balls and his team needed him to stay on.

Mumbai’s bowling department has been somewhat depleted with the absence of Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga, who suffered back pain. But it’s still better than their batting with Munaf Patel and Pragyan Ojha doing a good job.

MI skipper Harbhajan Singh has bagged just one wicket in six matches in the present competition, conceding 135 runs and that is definitely a cause for worry.

It will also be interesting to see whether the Punjab player will get some support from the crowds at PCA stadium when he comes to bat or bowl. Hoping that they will do better at Mohali, Harbhajan feels it was the fielding that took away the previous game from them.

“We had runs on the board, but fielding was the difference between the two teams. They fielded brilliantly and stopped about 15-20 odd runs. Had we fielded as well as they did, we would have been on the winning side,” said Harbhajan.

He said after the loss the team would regroup again.

“We need to keep our plans simple..fielding needs to be lifted, this is an area where we can do better. Hopefully, we will do well in the next game,” he said.

Aussie pacer Mitchell Johnson is expected to join the squad today. Meanwhile, Sunday’s win should give a psychological boost to Punjab, which will be playing on their home soil tomorrow.

The side is being led by stand-in captain David Hussey after regular skipper Adam Gilchrist suffered a hamstring injury.

The best thing for KXIP has been the return to form of discarded Aussie opener Shaun Marsh.

“The win against Mumbai was a great win for us. We are back in the competition,” Marsh said and expressed satisfaction about the way he has batted in the last two innings.

Punjab, who have won three and lost four our of seven matches played so far, brought their campaign back on track with a win against Mumbai.

Mumbai have won three and lost three out of the six contested so far. Punjab also enjoy slight edge over Mumbai, having won six and lost three out of nine matches played against Mumbai Indians in all editions of the IPL so far. (PTI)

Teams:

MI (Probable): Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Raydu, Kieron Pollard, Dinesh Kathik (wk), James Franklin, Harbhajan Singh (c), Thisara Perara, Pragyan Ojha, Munaf Patel, Rudra Pratap Singh

KXIP (Probable): Nitin Saini (wk), Siddharth Chitnis, Shaun Marsh, David Hussy (c), David Miller, Azar Mahmood, Mandeep Singh, Piyush Chawla, Bhargav Bhatt, Parvinder Awana, Praveen Kumar.
