Gayle, AB helps Bangalore seal thriller over Pune Warriors: IPL 2012

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 12:40 PM PDT

Phenomenal hitting by Chris Gayle and a brilliant batting at the rear by AB de Villiers and Saurabh Tiwary capped a fantastic chase by Royal Challengers Bangalore as they beat Pune Warriors by six wickets in an IPL match on Tuesday.

Chasing a target of 183, RCB’s Saurabh Tiwary (36 no, 23 balls, 1×4, 2×6) smashed Ashish Nehra for a big straight six while they needed three to win. Not to forget AB de Villiers (33 no, 14 balls, 2×4, 3×6) who smashed Nehra for two innovative sixes — a reverse sweep and a scoop over deep fine leg as the Men in Red needed 21 runs off the last over.

The chase was however started by Chris Gayle who hit eight towering sixes enroute his 48-ball 81.

Nehra who gave away 54 runs in four overs was hit for as many as half a dozen of sixes and could well be his last match in the IPL. The India discard who was one of India’s finest bowler at the death seems to have lost that magic. Nehra completely undid the good work done by Ashok Dinda who gave away only six runs in the penultimate over.

At halfway stage during their chase RCB were 63 for two with Gayle at the crease. Although Gayle hit couple of huge sixes off Ashish Nehra, he wasn’t at his dangerous best as he failed to find the gaps. Kohli too was taking time to get into the groove. Credit should be given to Bhuveneshwar Kumar who bowled three tight overs during the front 10.

It was only after Kohli was dismissed by Angelo Mathews that Gayle decided to play his signature game.

Leg-spinner Rahul Sharma bore the brunt as Gayle launched into him hitting five consecutive sixes as 31 runs came off that over and RCB seemed to be back on track.

Gayle raced to 81 off 47 balls as he hit Ashish Nehra to notch up his eighth six but the veteran seamer bowled a perfect delivery in the blockhole that cleaned up Gayle. The Jamaican had scored 81 off 48 balls with four boundaries and eight sixes.

Earlier, local boy Robin Uthappa’s belligerent knock of 69 along with useful contributions from Jesse Ryder and Marlon Samuels helped Pune Warriors India post a commendable 182 for six after opting to bat first on a flat Chinnaswamy deck.

Pune openers Jesse Ryders and Robin Uthappa got off to a cracking start adding 63 runs for the first wicket in only seven overs.

The Royals introduced offie Tillekaratne Dilshan in the second over where he was hammered for 13 runs which included a six and four.

Ryder started from where he left in the last match against CSK while Uthappa showed why he is so highly rated in this format.

Just when it looked that Ryder-Uthappa duo would murder the bowling, Harshal Patel provided RCB the breakthrough as Kiwi opener tried to pull him over lbackward square leg only to be caught by Mayank Agarwal at the boundary.

Uthappa had a reprieve when he tried to sweep left-arm spinner KP Appanna and TV replays showed that ball jumped off his gloves to be caught by AB de Villiers. The umpire however gave him not out and the next ball was dispatched into the deep mid-wicket stand.

The Karnataka lad quickly raced to his fourth IPL half century reverse sweeping Dilshan past short third-man for his second consecutive boundary.

RCB responded with two quick wickets in two overs. R Vinay Kumar first picked up an woefully out-of-form Sourav Ganguly whose slash was easily caught at sweeper cover by Mayank Agarwal and in the next over Vettori sent back Uthappa 69 (45 balls 4×9 6×2).

Marlon Samuels (34, 20 balls, 1×4, 2×6) and Steven Smith (16) added 47 runs in only 4.5 overs before couple run-outs saw the back of both players. (PTI)

Pune Warriors vs Bangalore (RCB) Post Match | IPL 5 | 17th April 2012

Gayle: I did struggle a bit against Nehra and Dinda. I was in a bit of pressure after Dilshan left. Me and Kohli looked to consolidate and looked for a big over. Unfortunately Kohli got out, but the over from Sharma changed the game. I was under a lot of pressure. I’m a bit sad as one of my sixes broke someone’s nose in the stand. I will be going straight to the hospital now. We have been having a lot of discussions to get it right. Tables have turned today and I am happy. We will be looking for another win.

Gayle is the Man of the Match for his brutal knock.

Ganguly: I thought it was a good score, but one over in the middle from Sharma and the last over proved expensive. ABDV played a brilliant knock, the scoop over fine leg was a brilliant shot. We are playing well, these things happen and we will bounce back.

Vettori: We needed this one. In the circumstances, it is a great momentum shift. Tiwary and ABD did well after Gayle’s knock. We try to maintain the team spirit, talk about fielding. We restricted Pune to a score we could chase. I think everyone knows how good ABD is, he arguably the best batsman in the world. Should be a great night in the dressing room tonight

Hodge powers Royals to 5 wickets win over Deccan Chargers: IPL 2012

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 08:25 AM PDT

Brad Hodge smashed an unbeaten half-century as Rajasthan Royals overcame Deccan Chargers by five wickets in their IPL 2012 match at Jaipur.

Deccan lost their third consecutive match this season and are yet to register points in the points table.

Chasing a mammoth target of 197, the home team overhauled the total with 2 balls to spare.

Rajasthan openers got the team off to a steady start as Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane put in a partnership 62 runs in six overs.

The partnership was finally broken when Dan Christian broke through the defence of Dravid to castle in clean bowled him.

Rahane and Menaria continued with the good work as they smashed the Deccan bowlers to all parts of the park.

Introduction of Amit Mishra seem to be the turning point as he struck to grab three crucial wicket to have Rajasthan reeling at 135 for four.

Hodge and Johan Botha put on a crucial 37 in just 17 balls to help Rajasthan inch closer to victory.

In the end, with 11 runs required off the final over wicket keeper Dishant Yagnik struck to boundaries to help Rajasthan to victory.

Earlier, Jean-Paul Duminy provided the late onslaught with an unbeaten 26-ball 58 after a solid opening stand as Deccan Chargers posted an imposing 196 for two.

After skipper Kumar Sangakkara (44) and Shikhar Dhawan (52) laid the platform with a 94-run opening stand, Duminy took the opposition bowlers to the cleaners, piling up 53 runs in the last three overs.

Duminy, playing his first match in the IPL season-5, struck five sixes, which included two off pacer Pankaj Singh’s penultimate over, and as many off Amit Singh’s last over of the innings. He also hit three fours.

Duminy found an able ally in Australian Daniel Christian, who hit a 19-ball 29, laced with two fours and a six, to propel the visitors to a competitive total.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, Chargers got off to a flying start with Sangakkara hitting five fours, including a six off Brad Hodge over long-on, while Dhawan took 43 balls for his fluent half-century, which contained eight fours.

The mandatory powerplay yielded 57 runs with Dhawan and Sangakkara hitting Rajasthan’s pace and spin trio of Pankaj Singh, Amit Singh and Johan Botha with consummate ease.

It looked like the week’s break from their last game against Chennai Super Kings did wonders for the visitors as the openers batted with purpose to come up with Chargers’ highest opening stand against Rajasthan in any of the IPL seasons so far.

Even Rajasthan’s last-match hero, medium-pacer Siddharth Trivedi failed to provide the team with the much-needed breakthrough. Rajasthan skipper Rahul Dravid used as many as six bowlers inside 10 overs but to no avail.

Sangakkara was looking in ominous form as he resorted to playing his trademark cuts and pulls to keep the run-rate over 8 an over.

Brad Hodge brought the smiles back on gloomy faces of Rajasthan players after the Sri Lankan was caught by wicket-keeper Dishant Yagnik while going for a slog in the 11th over, but not before hitting the Australian for a four and a six in the same over.

Dhawan completed his fifty in the next over with a glance towards fine-leg.

However, the Delhi batsman soon departed after being caught by Hodge at deep square leg off Trivedi.

The loss of two wickets did not put the brakes on Chargers’ scoring rate as Duminy and Christian kept the home side fielders busy with some quick running between the wickets.

While Duminy dispatched a fuller-length delivery from Trivedi for maximum over deep midwicket, Christian made his presence felt with an effortless flat-batted six off Hogg.

Amit Singh came in for some special treatment from Duminy as the South African blasted three fours off the bowler to take Chargers past the 150-run mark.

It seemed like Duminy had saved the best for the last as he dispatched Pankaj for two sixes and a four to accumulate 18 runs off the 19th over and then treated Amit Singh with equal disdain, hitting him for two sixes.

Hodge: I think it’s the role of the Australian to try and attack the fast bowlers. That’s our nature, Indians are good at playing spin and we’re good at playing fast bowlers. I really enjoy my cricket and I love playing, as long as I can perform, I can continue playing. It’s a completely different role here to finish games. Rahul has given a specific role for me and things are working out well. Rahane and Rahul are doing a fine job at the start, and I’m finishing games, so it’s very happy for me.

Hodge is the Man of the Match

Dravid: Nice to get youngsters performing, but it also shows that experience is requires, Who says that experienced guys can’t play this format? Hodge was brilliant towards the end. It’s the only form of the game I know, so I better play it well (smiles when Harsha Bhogle reminds him about his knock) We have a good spirit in the team, we know that we have been lucky today. The bowlers didn’t do well today but the batsmen bailed them out, hopefully the reverse happens sometime.

Sangakkara: 2 games in a row now, we have ourselves to blame but they played very well.We got a great total but we had to back it up with a solid performance with the ball. The track wasn’t one sided for the batsmen – if you hit the good lengths and maintained discipline, there was something for the bowlers.

Duminy, Dhawan powers Deccan Chargers to 196 against Rajasthan Royals: IPL 2012

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 06:15 AM PDT

Siddharth Trivedi struck to give Deccan Chargers another blow as he dismissed Shikhar Dhawan in their IPL 5 match against Deccan Chargers at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

There was a huge sigh of relief for Dhawan after batsman found the form, making the first fifty of the fifth edition of Indian Premier League. Dhawan contributed 52 off 43 balls that included eight fours.

Brad Hodge gave Rajasthan Royals massive breakthrough when he removed Kumar Sangakkara.

Deccan Chargers got off to rollicking start as Sangakkara and Shikhar Dhawan put up highest opening partnership of IPL 5, adding 94 runs in 10.4 overs. Sagakkara played capatin’s knock as he scored 44 off 32 balls, smacking five fours and a six.

Sangakkara and Dhawan took Chargers past fifty runs in 5.2 overs. The pair started hammering the Royals bowlers from the first delivery when Chargers skipper Sangakkara smashed to the fine leg region for four.

Earlier, Deccan skipper Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and opted to bat against Rajasthan Royals.

Cameron White made the way for JP Duminy in Deccan’s playing eleven while Tanmay Mishra and Abhishek Jhunjhunwala have also been included.

The Rajasthan Royals have made just one change, bringing in Rajasthan Ranji wicketkeeper Dishant Yagnik in place of Shreevats Goswami, who pulled up with an injury just 15 minutes before the toss.

Deccan Chargers seems to be a team in disarray as they have lost both their matches and their batsmen have not been able to convert good starts into long innings.

As far as bowling is concerned, South African quickie Dale Steyn has been impressive but others like Manpreet Gony, Daniel Christian as well as spinners Amit Mishra have been unable to stem the run flow at crucial junctures.

On the other hand, Rajasthan outplayed Royal Challengers Bangalore by 59 runs on Sunday to recover from back-to-back losses in Kolkata and Mumbai.

Ajinkya Rahane, the orange cap holder for the moment, has been the pick of the batsmen and has emerged as the only centurion so far in the current edition of the IPL.

Rajasthan’s bowling line-up, which is devoid of any big names, has also been consistent. Medium pacers like Sidhartha Trivedi, Amit Singh, Kevon Cooper and Pankaj Singh have taken their chances.

Cricketers, Fans delighted with resumption of cricket in Pakistan

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 04:49 AM PDT

Delighted Pakistani cricket fans, players and politicians on Monday welcomed Bangladesh’s decision to tour the troubled country and end its three-year exile from hosting international matches.

Bangladesh on Sunday agreed to a short tour during which they will play one 50-over game and a Twenty20 international on April 29 and 30 in Lahore, a move hailed by former captain and current all-rounder Shahid Afridi.

“It’s a major breakthrough and a very good news for the whole nation, for Pakistan team and millions of fans who have been deprived of international game for the last three years,” he said.

No international matches have been played in Pakistan since militants attacked the Sri Lankan team bus during the Lahore Test in March 2009, leaving eight people dead and seven visiting players and an assistant coach injured.

Foreign teams shunned Pakistan as a cricket venue after the attacks, forcing them to play their home series on neutral venues, mostly in the United Arab Emirates.

Pakistan’s foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar praised efforts from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf to revive internationals.

“PCB’s efforts have finally borne fruit and Bangladesh team’s visit will help bring international cricket back to Pakistan and will motivate more teams to come to our country,” Khar said.

Intikhab Alam, the PCB’s director of international cricket and a former national coach and player, said the Bangladesh tour could open the way for other teams to follow.

“PCB in the leadership of (Zaka) Ashraf was endeavouring to bring cricket back in the country and the Bangladesh tour will be the beginning of a bigger thing in the future,” Alam told AFP.

But former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif sounded a note of caution.

“We must not leave any loopholes in security because we cannot afford a minor mistake or any lapse in arrangements,” said Latif. “Other teams will also be motivated after Bangladesh tour but we have to make the best arrangements.”

Interior minister Rehman Malik reiterated a promise to put in place stringent security measures for the Bangladesh team.

“We will leave no stone unturned and put in place the best possible security for the Bangladesh team as per our promise and make this tour an exemplary one so that other teams also tour us,” said Malik.

Fans were ecstatic at the news.

“It will be great to watch international matches on our home ground,” said Hameed Ali, a student in Lahore.

“I cannot forget the dreadful attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus and was due to watch that day’s play.

“It’s too early to say that Bangladesh’s visit will help bring bigger teams, but let’s keep our fingers crossed. I am waiting to get a ticket for the April 30 game.” (AFP)

Toss: Deccan Chargers have won the toss and elected to bat

Teams:
Rajasthan Royals (Playing XI): Rahul Dravid(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Owais Shah, Brad Hodge, Ashok Menaria, Dishant Yagnik(w), Johan Botha, Brad Hogg, Amit Singh, Siddharth Trivedi, Pankaj Singh

Deccan Chargers (Playing XI): Bharat Chipli, Shikhar Dhawan, Tanmay Mishra, Daniel Christian, Kumar Sangakkara(w/c), Jean-Paul Duminy, Abhishek Jhunjunwala, Ankit Sharma, Amit Mishra, Dale Steyn, Anand Rajan

Sangakkara: It is great to have such a long break in the IPL but we have been training quite hard. Rohit Sharma was unbelievable in the previous game against us but we know now how to get into winning positions and this time we would like to finish it off. I don’t want to look at scores that much. But it looks like a good wicket and we want to get some runs on the board and bat well. We are hungry for victory but we can’t get too desperate otherwise we might make some mistakes. Cameron White misses out and Duminy comes in. Tanmay Mishra and Abhishek Jhunjunwala also find a spot in the playing eleven.

Dravid: Rahane has been sensational for us and he has been a fantastic cricketer over the years. he has played for India for a bit and has been left out after that. I’m sure he will get a permanent place in the side. I think he has a lot more talent than I had at his age. The key for him is to keep learning and keep improving. He has a good head on his shoulders. It looks like a good wicket. This should be a good challenge for the boys bowling first. We didn’t bowl too well againt Mumbai and hopefully we can rectify that here. Shreevats Goswami has picked up an injury during the warm up so Dishant Yagnik will take his place.

Preview: Pune Warriors vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 5, 17 April 2012

The middle-order’s tendency to collapse and the lack of fifth bowler are the two areas of concerns for Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of their Indian Premier League match against Pune Warriors on Tuesday.

After the win against Delhi Daredevils, things haven’t been going quite well for RCB skipper Daniel Vettori as his team lost three matches in a row.

The Kiwi is yet to find a pill which could get rid of his headache of filling up the fifth bowler’s slot.

The middle-order, especially the Indian batsmen Virat Kohli, Saurabh Tiwary and Cheteshwar Pujara have not been firing on all cylinders on a consistent basis.

The lack of fifth bowler in the side has been used to the hilt by oppositions.

The RCB fans not only saw this against Chennai Super Kings, but in Sunday’s game against Rajasthan Royals who plundered over 100 runs in the last six overs.

Vettori, however, was hoping Chris Gayle to play a part as a fifth bowler to either take wickets or contain runs. But the West Indian could not live up to his expectations after he conceded 21 runs in his only over last night.

The time is probably ripe for mercurial Sri Lankan opener Tillakratne Dilshan to get a chance against the Warriors on Tuesday.

Even more, Vettori is very much concerned about the middle-order collapse in all the matches, except the opening game against DD in which South African AB de Villiers rescued the team with a flamboyant 60.

The Indian batsmen would like to put their hands up and consolidate upon solid starts.

Virat Kohli has looked good, but has not capitalised on the starts. He would look to reverse the trend against the Warriors.

Vettori, for a change, would like to turn the tables on Pune by opting to bat first — provided he wins the toss — on a strip, which he thinks, would help the batsmen and make life difficult for the team chasing.

On the other hand, though the Warriors are missing the services of key players like Yuvraj Singh and Graeme Smith, the current skipper and former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been inspiring the team in this edition of the IPL.

Under his leadership, they have lost just one match, against Kings XI Punjab, but decimated Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings convincingly. The team is placed second in points table.

Pune would be hoping to continue their winning ways. The Sahara-owned team is capable of finishing on top of the points table as it has quality players at its disposal.

Robin Uthappa, Jesse Ryder, Steven Smith and Marlon Samuels have fared well in this year’s IPL so far. Ganguly must be a very happy man to see Ryders coming into the groove with a magnificent match-winning, unbeaten 73 against CSK on April 4.

Ganguly would be even more satisfied if Manish Pandey, who had played a key role in IPL before for different teams, fires in the next match.

Pune also have a decent bowling attack with pacers like Ashok Dinda, who took four wickets against Mumbai Indians in their first encounter. Wayne Parnel and Ashish Nehra too, have been chipping in with useful contributions.

As far as spin bowling options are concerned, Pune have plenty of variety. Rahul Sharma, who impressed one and all with his good show in last IPL, has done well so far. He is ably supported by Murali Karthik, Samuels and Smith. (PTI)

Preview: Rajasthan Royals Vs Deccan Chargers, IPL 5, 17 April 2012

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 02:30 PM PDT

Back on home turf after a comprehensive victory in their previous match, Rajasthan Royals would start firm favourites when they take on the struggling Deccan Chargers in an IPL match.

Riding on Ajinkya Rahane’s unbeaten hundred and Owais Shah’s blazing fifty, Rajasthan beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 59 runs in Bangalore last night to recover from back-to-back losses in Kolkata and Mumbai.

The biggest positive to be drawn from last night’s win was the cracking form of Rahane and Shah.

Champions of the inaugural IPL, Rajasthan have also benefitted from the experience of their captain Rahul Dravid, who has filled in the void left by Shane Warne quite commendably so far.

Rahane, the orange cap holder for the moment, has been the pick of the batsmen and has emerged as the only centurion so far in the current edition of the IPL.

The 23-year-old impressed with his shot-selection and temperament last night.

Shah, too, has been outstanding and has delivered when the situation has demanded as far as accelerating the run rate is concerned.

Dravid has also been able to forge good opening partnerships with Rahane so far while the rest of the batting comprising Ashok Menaria and Brad Hodge have been Impressive.

Their bowling line-up, which is devoid of any big names, has also been consistent. Medium pacers like Sidhartha Trivedi, Amit Singh, Kevon Cooper and Pankaj Singh have taken their chances.

On the other hand, Deccan Chargers seems to be a team in disarray as they have lost both their matches and their batsmen like Parthiv Patel, skipper Kumar Sangakkara, Cameron White, Darren Bravo and Shikhar Dhawan have not been able to convert good starts into long innings.

As far as bowling is concerned, South African quickie Dale Styen has been impressive but others like Manpreet Gony, Daniel Christian as well as spinners Amit Mishra have been unable to stem the run flow at crucial junctures.

The slight drizzles in past couple of days has made the weather a little humid but while hosts would looking to carry on their winning streak, the visitors who are languishing at the bottom of the table would be aiming to put their act together. (PTI)

Teams:

RR (Probable): Rahul Dravid (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Menaria, Johan Botha, Brad Hogg, Brad Hodge, Pankaj Singh, Owais Shah, Shreevats Goswami (wk), Amit Singh, Siddharth Trivedi.

DC (Probable): Shikhar Dhawan, Parthiv Patel, Kumar Sangakkara (c&wk), Cameron White, Bharat Chipli, Daniel Christian, Dwaraka Ravi Teja, Anand Rajan, Ankit Sharma, Dale Steyn, TP Sudhindra.
