Pune Warriors Vs Kings XI Punjab Post Match | IPL 5 | 8th April 2012

Samuels: The crowd were really good, it has been good playing with Pune. The ball was skidding on and we had got a challenging total on board. We need to play hard cricket, that is what was discussed in the team meeting. We had to play fearless cricket and we did that. First time we’ve had this atmosphere, it can’t get better than this.

Marlon Samuels is the Man of the Match for his all around effort.

Gilchrist: Ten minutes of madness toward the end of our bowling and ten minutes of madness towards the start cost us the game. We need to train hard and turn it around. We can go through a form slump in this kind of long tournament and our task is to arrest it and make a comeback.

Ganguly: We bowled pretty well, we also batted well towards the end and we bowled really well in the first ten overs. The late onslaught took us to 160 odd, it was certainly a 150 wicket. The crowd were fantastic and it has been the case in the IPL. Still a long way to go.

Toss: Pune have won the toss and elected to bat

Gilchrist: This is an amazing stadium and the crowd is filling up very fast. Unfortunately, Shaun Marsh is out with a back injury and Mascarenhas replaces him. I am looking forward to having a good match. I also would have batted first, but we will try to restrict them under 160.

Ganguly: The stadium looks very good, though its not fully complete. I was happy to see a packed crowd in the last match. Still lot of cricket is left, but we will try to put up a consistent performance. We will bat. It will turn as the match progresses. Ryder opens the batting today and Nehra is also back in the side.

Gambhir: It’s just the start of the tournament, we’ve played only 1 12 over game. We have experience and quality so we should do well. I firmly believe that individuals can only contribute but it’s the team that wins. Love playing in Rajasthan, it’s a high scoring venue. We have depth in our batting, hopefully we can restrict them and chase it down. Narine comes in for de Lange.

Dravid: Important to win first and keep the momentum going. Good to see youngsters like Rahane and Cooper do well. We can’t go too far in the tournament with only a couple of contributors, we need a lot of people to do well. It’s a marathon, not a sprint so we have to be ready. Would’ve bowled well as well but it doesn’t make much of a difference in a T20 game. We’re playing the same eleven.

Pune Warriors vs Kings XI Punjab, Match 8, IPL 5: Preview

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 03:30 PM PDT

Buoyed by an upset win over Mumbai Indians in their tournament-opener, Pune Warriors will look to affirm their superiority over Kings XI Punjab when the two teams lock horns in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League at the newly-constructed Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium on Sunday.

The hosts led by Sourav Ganguly, hunted in a pack to defend a small total against Mumbai, but a disappointing show by the batters will particularly be a cause of concern for them.

None of their batsman, except for man-of-the-match Steve Smith and Robin Uthappa, looked comfortable against the likes of Lasith Malinga and Pragyan Ojha. However, they might take heart from the fact that the KXIP doesn’t possess the same quality of attack as the Mumbai Indians did.

The onus will be on the top-order to provide a good start to the Pune innings.

Manish Pandey, who was castled by Malinga without even opening his account, would look to make amends against Kings XI. The opener has not been in great touch off late and would like to see himself back in the runs column.

Ganguly, meanwhile, would like to forget his dismissal against Mumbai in the opening game and bat through the innings.

The other worrying factor for the Warriors would be the indifferent form of Marlon Samuels. Though, he came handy with the ball, his batting is still scratchy.

KXIP, on the other hand, looked rusty in their opening encounter against Rajasthan Royals, with almost all their bowlers struggling to find the line and length against Ajinkya Rahane and co.

Praveen Kumar and James Faulkner went for 83 runs in their eight overs and their spinners too were wayward in their line.

The visitors will be particularly concerned about the form of Praveen, who was clobbered all over the park by the Rajasthan batsmen.

In the batting department, the side will want to see their previous edition’s hero, Paul Valthaty to come good against the likes of Ashok Dinda, who shaped Pune’s win with his four-wicket haul in their first match, and Wayne Parnell.

Although the skipper Adam Gilchrist looked in good nick against the Royals, the team would want him to stay at the crease for a longer duration particularly with Shaun Marsh looking woefully out of form.

In the middle-order, the responsibility will be on the shoulders of another Australian import David Hussey to guide the likes of Abhishek Nayar and Mandeep Singh.

The team, however, would take some positives from the way its tailenders contributed to the chase, helping it reach 160.

Both the sides would though be wary of the nature of the pitch at the newly-built stadium as it remains unchartered territory.

The hosts, however, hold a slight edge over their visiting counterparts with the kind of variety they have in their repertoire. (PTI)

Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Rajasthan Royals, Match 7, IPL 5: Preview

Posted: 07 Apr 2012 02:30 PM PDT

After a rollicking start to their IPL V campaign, Rajasthan Royals will look to continue the winning momentum when they face Kolkata Knight Riders, who would be equally keen to bounce back from a humiliating defeat in their opening match against Delhi Daredevils on Sunday.

Led by the recently-retired Rahul Dravid, Rajasthan beat Kings XI Punjab by 31 runs last night and the former India skipper would hope that his boys would come up with an equally good performance.

Kolkata Knight Riders too would be eager to put their humiliating eight-wicket defeat behind them when they start in the day match tomorrow to be played in the scorching heat at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

The Royals were impressive against Kings XI and Kevon Cooper was the find of the match.

The little-known Caribbean cricketer impressed with his all-round capabilities by adding 11 runs off three balls and then bowling with guile to grab four for 26 apart from displaying his agility on the field.

The batting for the hosts looked solid with Rahul Dravid playing his role as a motivator and sheet anchor to help Ajinkya Rahane play a brisk 98 run innings.

Though the exuberant Ashok Menaria failed to read a wrong one from Piyush Chawla, other batsmen including, Brad Hodge, Owais Shah and Kevon Cooper, accelerated according to the need of the hour.

The bowling department too looked in good touch as they took advantage of the wicket. Cooper was especially outstanding as he learnt fast to mix his slower ones according to the pace of the wicket.

The 23-year-old lad from Trinidad has demonstrated that he is a quick learner and might be a vital cog in Rajasthan Royals’ campaign.

Amit Singh and Siddharth Trivedi have shouldered the responsibility of the pace unit in the first match and the hosts might also bring quickie Shaun Tait to spearhead the attack.

KKR, on the other hand, has a pretty balanced side which would really test the might of the Rajasthan Royals.

The genuinely quick duo of South African youngster Marchant de Lange and seasoned Brett Lee did prove costly against Delhi but they can be a real threat once they get their rythym right.

The wily South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis and Yousuf Pathan, who knows the conditions well here, can be devastating with both bat and ball.

Skipper Gautam Gambhir who was in fine form recently would be eager to be back among runs.

The rest of the batting too has solid names such as Manoj Tiwari and Laxmi Ratan Shukla apart from a tail which consists of Lee, Iqbal Abdulla and Rajat Bhatia — all capable to add a few quick runs.

The scorching heat would be a worrying factor for both the teams but the wicket which was good for batting might again provide a surface for an intriguing clash between the two teams. (PTI)
