Pune Warriors Vs Kings XI Punjab Post Match Presentation | IPL 5 | 12th April 2012

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 12:14 PM PDT

Mascarenhas: This is the first time I got a surface like this in India. I love playing in the IPL, the crowds are passionate. We had two losses, but hopefully we play really well in the next few matches.

Mascarenhas is the Man of the match for his bowling spell of 5/25

Adam Gilchrist: It’s good to get things started. We managed to have a good couple of days of work-out. We did well in most of the games. Mascarenhas bowled really well. Awana and PK provided him good support. Fielding was really good. There was a really big storm which changed the conditions. The wicket in Mohali helps the bowlers, but it helps the batsmen as well.

Sourav Ganguly: It was an important toss. 140 would have been a good total. We needed to play smart cricket, but got all out in 19 overs. We were disappointed with the score. We have a very good bowling attack, if we score 160, it will be dificult for the opponents. There was seam movement, which is why I kept Sharma till the end, he bowled really well.

Ganguly: I like to keep playing as long as I enjoy. It’s good to take part and have some fun. It has been a good start for us, but it’s a long tournament and anything can happen towards the end. I also would have bowled. But we will try to put up a good score. Mathews comes into the side. We made a tough decision and left out Murali Karthik as we wanted an extra batsmen.

Gilchrist: Two games and 2 loses, not an ideal start, but we have to make a quick turnaround. Couple of days of traning has been good and we are upbeat this time. Batters have to put up a good score at the start. We are bowling first as plenty of grass is there and it is damp also as it rained heavily last night. Marsh comes back into the side.

Vettori: I enjoy bowling in Bangalore but I’ve heard that this will assist the spinners even more. It looks a dry wicket and might break up even more as the game progresses. With Gayle, Kohli and AB at the top of the order, we have class and we need to deliver today. We’re going to have a bat today. Hopefully the wicket will slow down later. We are playing one of the premier teams today and we need to bat well from the start. Bhatkal is in for Harshal Patel.

Dhoni: We have got players who can play big strokes. We have to be careful while taking singles and hopefully with a few more games behind our backs, we should be able to do well. We know how good we are, we need to deliver. We are going in with an unchanged side.

Australia beat West Indies in thriller: 1st Test

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 01:59 AM PDT

Australia drew first blood by beating the West Indies by three wickets in a thrilling finish to the first Test.

Ben Hilfenhaus hit the final run of the 192 run target with the light fading fast to give the tourists victory after the hosts had fought back to keep the game in the balance.

A half-century from Shane Watson and a rapid 32 from Mike Hussey were the key contributions as the visitors got home in the gloom.Fittingly, Man of the Match, Ryan Harris was with Hilfenhaus at the crease at the end.

“I actually said to Mike Hussey before tea that I’d love to be out there at the end of a Test match and hit the winning runs.”I didn’t do that but I was out there. It was a good feeling. “That was one of the hardest Test matches I’ve played in my short career. To win a game like that after they batted for two days it’s pretty amazing.”

It was clear that the defeat had hurt the West Indian skipper Darren Sammy.”We dominated a top side with some good players and the way I heard them celebrating on the balcony means a lot to me,” he said.”We’ll take that to heart and look to come back strong in Trinidad.”

During the morning the West Indies had added 77 more runs to their overnight total of 71-5 to set a relatively tough target of 192.The hosts hadn’t looked like getting anywhere near that when they started the day on 71-5 and promptly lost Narsingh Deonarine lbw to Ryan Harris.Sammy went for 14 as he played a delivery late and it dropped behind him and was heading towards the wicket – he tried to kick the ball away but he only managed to knock the ball against the stumps.

Carlton Baugh was key to the West Indies reaching a competitive total. On 18, he edged a Ben Hilfenhaus delivery straight to first slip. Michael Clarke, who had just taken himself out of that position, crouched down in disbelief.

It wasn’t too costly as with the first ball of his next over Hilfenhaus provoked Baugh into chipping straight to Harris at mid-on.Fidel Edwards was next to go as he holed out to Watson at mid-off off Siddle.West Indies last pair batted long enough for lunch to be delayed but, having added 19 runs, Kemar Roach got an inside edge off a Harris ball and it crashed into his stumps.

When they came out, the West Indies set defensive fields as though a draw was their only hope and succeeded in restricting Ed Cowan and David Warner.Warner, perhaps in frustration, tried to run a Darren Sammy ball to third man but instead he got a thin edge through to Baugh.Watson eventually settled after some narrow escapes and following the tea break both he and Cowan accelerated the scoring.

Sixty-five runs came in the next 14 overs until Watson found the man on the boundary when he top-edged a sweep off Deonarine. It was the first wicket in what proved to be Deonarine’s best spell of Test bowling as he used the rough made by the bowlers’ footmarks.A straight-forward pull shot from Cowan went into the hands of mid-wicket and gave Deonarine his second dismissal and it wasn’t long before he bowled one to Ricky Ponting that stayed low and got under his bat.

In his next over Deonarine had his fourth scalp. Michael Clarke got a leading edge and Deonarine stooped to pick up an easy catch.Australia still required 52 runs to reach their target and were now five down.He thought he had his fifth when Matthew Wade was given out lbw by umpire Ian Gould but the batsman used the DRS which supported his belief that he’d hit the ball.

With the light fading Hussey and Wade moved the score along as quickly as possible but both fell to Roach. Wade was caught in the deep and Hussey fell with three runs still needed, bowled in the poor light.A couple of scampered singles from Harris and Hilfenhaus saw Australia home.

Pune Warriors Vs Kings XI Punjab | IPL 5 | Preview | 12 April 2012

Posted: 11 Apr 2012 02:30 PM PDT

Kings XI Punjab would look to get over the disappointment of back-to-back losses and make a winning start on home turf this IPL season when they take on Pune Warriors on Thursday, aiming to extract revenge on the visitors for defeat in their previous match.

This year and in some previous seasons as well, the Punjab side has failed to gain the initial momentum resulting in them not being able to go too far in the event, barring in the first season when, under Yuvraj Singh, they had reached the semifinals.

The outfit co-owned by Bollywood actress Preity Zinta would be without English pacer Stuart Broad, who has been ruled out due to a calf injury. His presence would have added some much-needed zing to the Kings XI bowling attack.

In their first encounter of IPL V, KXIP were blown away by Rajasthan Royals’ Ajinkya Rahane’s heroics who made 98.

KXIP could muster only 160 in response to the Jaipur team’s mammoth 191.

In the match against Rajasthan, big names in the KXIP side — including skipper Adam Gilchrist, last edition’s hero Paul Valthaty, Aussie import Shaun Marsh, Abhishek Nayar and David Hussey — failed to make big scores which was needed.

In their last match played in Pune against the Warriors, Kings XI, again batting second, could accumulate only 144 losing by 22 runs.

In this match too, Gilchrist (6) and (1) failed to give the team the desired start with both falling to run outs. It was spinner Bipul Sharma (35) who chipped in with some useful runs while some other batsmen including Mandeep Singh (24), Nayar (24) and David Hussey (18) were not able to play long innings.

In the middle-order, the responsibility will be on the shoulders of another Australian import David Hussey to guide the likes of Abhishek Nayar and Mandeep Singh.

The bowling department has let the Punjab side down, with Praveen Kumar failing to impress so far. Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla and Bipul Sharma have also not been able to contain the batsmen.

However, new addition to the team this year, Harmeet Singh has been bowling intelligently and Warriors need to watch out for him. Singh took three wickets in the last encounter against Pune.

Australian import James Faulkner with his left arm pace would also look to bother Sourav Ganguly’s men on Mohali’s bouncy track while English bowler Dimitri Mascarenhas too has the ability to contain the batsmen.

On the other hand, Ganguly’s side is riding high after an upset win over Mumbai Indians in their tournament-opener and will look to affirm their superiority over Kings XI. The Warriors defended a modest total of 129 against Mumbai, who could make just 101.

However, in that encounter, none of the Warriors batsman, except for man-of-the-match Steve Smith and Robin Uthappa, looked comfortable against the likes of Lasith Malinga and Pragyan Ojha.

The onus will be on the top-order to provide a good start to the Pune innings and Ganguly will look to play a big knock.

Kings XI will need to watch out for the likes of Ashok Dinda, who shaped Pune’s win with his four-wicket haul in the first match and gave away just 13 runs in three overs he bowled in the last match.

South African left arm pacer Wayne Parnell and Ashish Nehra may also create trouble for the Kings batsmen, with Mohali track known to favour the pacers.

Squads:

KXIP (probable): Adam Gilchrist (wk & c), Paul Valthaty, Abhishek Nayar, David Hussey, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Mandeep Singh, Bipul Sharma, Piyush Chawla, James Faulkner, Praveen Kumar, Harmeet Singh.

PWI (probable): Sourav Ganguly (c), Jesse Ryder, Manish Pandey, Robin Uthappa (wk), Callum Ferguson, Marlon Samuels, Steven Smith, Murali Kartik, Rahul Sharma, Ashok Dinda, Ashish Nehra, Wayne Parnell.

Time: 20:00 local time (14:30 GMT)
