Delhi Daredevils crush Mumbai Indians to go on top: IPL 2012

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 12:02 PM PDT

Virender Sehwag scored a fluent innings as Delhi Daredevils (DD) notched up a seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2012 match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday.

Chasing a small total of 93, Delhi overhauled the score with 31 balls to spare.

Skipper Virender Sehwag led the chase with a knock of

Naman Ojha and Kevin Pietersen where the other wickets to fall during the run chase

Earlier, recklessly batting by Mumbai Indians saw them collapse to 92 all-out in 19.2 overs.

Sent in to bat, MI had lost half their side within the first 10 overs, results of either rash shots or poor running between the wickets.

The hosts then recovered somewhat through a belligerent knock of 33 off just 22 balls with five fours and a six from skipper Harbhajan Singh, but the final tally looked well below par for the course.

It was also their second-lowest in IPL history, a shade better than the 87 all out against Kings XI Punjab last year at Mohali.

In the top order, only Rohit Sharma contributed with a chancy 29 in 27 balls with five fours while the others fell for single digit scores, including last match’s man of the match Kieron Pollard who was out for a 3-ball 1.

For the Daredevils, who came here after hammering last year’s winners Chennai Super Kings at home, the wickets were shared by their impressive bowling attack.

Left-arm spinner Shabaz Nadeem struck two blows in his first two overs to draw early blood which was later feasted on by Morne Morkel (2/22), Ajit Agarkar (2/27), Umesh Yadav (2/11) and Irfan Pathan (1/12).

Mumbai Indians got off to a shock start by losing both their South African openers with only 5 on the board.

Davy Jacobs, included for the first match in the season, tried a cross-batted heave against left arm spinner Nadeem and was bowled comprehensively for a duck in the second over.

His compatriot Richard Levi too did not prosper much and was also guilty of trying an audacious pull off Nadeem and under-edged the ball on to the stumps to leave MI reeling in the fourth over after being sent in to bat by Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag.

Rohit Sharma tried to attack from the first ball and played a couple of glorious lofted off drives but was also lucky that three other ambitious shots were top-edged to the boundary, two of those off Morne Morkel.

Even as he was settling down he saw the backs of Ambati Rayudu (4), out to a very poorly judged and attempted single, and key batsman Kieron Pollard.

Rayudu scampered for a non-existent run after being struck on the pads by Ajit Agarkar who was given his first match of the season. Partner Rohit never budged from the non-striker?s spot. The batsman was so far down the pitch that even a misdirected throw by fielder Yogesh Nagar could not help him regain the crease.

Tottering at 30 for 3, things became worse when Pollard was caught trying to cart Umesh Yadav out of the ground and getting a leading edge for the catch to drop into the waiting hands of Ross Taylor.

Dinesh Karthik too played poorly as his attempted pull off Yadav resulted in a simple catch to mid-on fielder Kevin Petersen as the ball hurried on to the batsman and at 44 for 6 in the 11th over, MI?s tail was exposed.

Skipper Harbhajan Singh used the long handle to good effect by slamming Agarkar for two fours and a six in the 12th over that yielded 17 runs to help MI pass the 50 mark.

But for the MI captain and his stand of 34 runs with Clint McKay, who was playing his first game of IPL5, the total would have looked even more pathetic than it did.

Harbhajan played in his usual manner, using his bat with purpose to club blows, and but for his ebullience the story would have been sorrier for MI.

Shahbaz Nadeem : Enjoyed the bowling. It was a lifetime experience for me. The first ball I bowled was slow, it drifted in. Then looked at bowling the arm balls. The wicket wasn’t turning that much, but helped me. This has given me a great experience, Sehwag has backed me. It is coming out really well.

Shahbaz Nadeem is the Man of the Match.

Harbhajan: The shot selection was not good. Hopefully we will play better. 140-150 would have been a good score. There was something in the wicket, which is why I bowled pacers.

Sehwag: I think my bowlers did fantastic job. There was something in the wicket for the bowlers. knew that the foreigh batsmen were not good against spinners. We played according to the situation, would have attacked if we had to chase a bigger score. We are working hard, will try to make the play-offs.

T20 World Cup to feature 16 teams from 2014: ICC

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 03:18 AM PDT

The International Cricket Council’s Executive Board today decided to increase the number of teams in the biennial World T20 Championships from 12 to 16 for the editions commencing 2014.

During a weekend meeting here, the ICC Board received a report of the strategic discussions held at the Chief Executive’s Committee (CEC) in March and confirmed the “increase, from 2014 onwards, the number of teams participating in the ICC World T20 from 12 to 16 men’s teams.

“The event should remain a joint men’s and women’s event,” it said.

“Three additional T20 Internationals may be played in the year in which the ICC World T20 is being staged provided there is a corresponding reduction in the maximum number of permitted ODIs (as per ICC Scheduling guidelines – the current regulations permit a maximum of 12 T20Is for each Full Member in any one year).”

Lorgat said the amount of cricket was discussed before the decision.

“The need to manage volume of cricket was considered when agreeing to allow the additional T20Is to be played in a year,” he said.

The Board confirmed the hosting for the ICC World T20 2014 qualifying tournament in the United Arab Emirates in October 2013 and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 qualifying event in New Zealand in 2014.

Other decisions taken included confirmation to proceed with a high-level evaluation of cricket’s participation in multi-sport games; the necessity for women’s cricket to play at least three ODIs or three T20s in a calendar year in order to retain their ODI and T20 status; and, following an independent study, that the current Reliance ICC Rankings are fit for the purposes of determining qualification to ICC events and for promotion/relegation purposes.

Preview: Mumbai Indians Vs Delhi Daredevils, Match 19, IPL 2012

Posted: 15 Apr 2012 03:30 PM PDT

With Sachin Tendulkar all set to return from injury and bolster the batting department, Mumbai Indians would look to continue with their winning ways when they take on another in-form team Delhi Daredevils in their Indian Premier League match on monday.

The batting maestro sustained a finger injury in his right hand in the IPL season opener against defending champions Chennai Super Kings on April 4 and missed the next three games.

Yesterday he took part in his first batting practice, facing throw-downs for 45 minutes while the rest of the MI team members had a net session at the Wankhede Stadium.

Since the IPL season opener against Chennai, Mumbai Indians have not had a solid start but with Tendulkar expected to take his spot at the top of batting order, MI can hope for a strong opening stand for the likes of Kieron Pollard and Rohit Sharma to feast on later.

Neither T Suman, who opened in two games, nor Ambati Rayudu, who got a chance to launch the innings in the other game, prospered in Tendulkar’s absence.

South African Richard Levi, who debuted in the IPL in style with a man-of-the-match award-winning half century when Tendulkar was at the other end, also has not done anything extraordinary since the opening game.

A victory for MI tomorrow would be their third on the trot and help them shoot their way back to the top while a win for the Daredevils would take them to six points and keep them among the leading teams on the points table.

MI floundered while chasing a small score against Pune Warriors in the only loss they had suffered so far, before Rohit, Pollard and Rayudu struck form in the previous two games to help them chase successfully or post challenging totals.

While skipper Harbhajan Singh has not taken many wickets, he has done well in containing the scoring rate while bowling in the power play periods in the two home games so far.

The off-spinner could, however, be tested tomorrow by rival counterpart Virender Sehwag or Kevin Pietersen, with his switch hits.

The Daredevils have the momentum, and the comprehensive victory over Chennai in their last game on April 10 would have given them enormous confidence. Sufficiently rested after that eight-wicket victory at home, the Daredevils pose a very strong challenge to the might of MI.

The visiting team has a formidable pace battery at its command with the gangling Morne Morkel (7 wickets from 3 games) with the ability to extract bounce and Umesh Yadav giving it the cutting edge.

The side appears a bit weak in the spin department which could be a handicap if the wicket at the Wankhede, which has shown vastly different qualities in the two ties played so far, starts to provide the sort of turn that was on view in the game against Pune Warriors on April 6.

Irfan Pathan can lend good support while there are others like New Zealander Doug Bracewell, who took three wickets in the only game he has played, and West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell waiting to grab a spot in the eleven.

Pietersen was on song with an unbeaten 43 and an unbroken stand of 61 with Jayawardene (20 not out) against the Super Kings after Sehwag had shown glimpses of what he is capable of with a quick-fire 33 off 21 balls.

New Zealand skipper and classy batsman Ross Taylor has recovered from the surgery to the hairline fracture sustained during the Test series against South Africa, and his availability is also a big plus for the Daredevils.

With Sehwag is waiting to explode, the top order looks formidable with Pietersen, Jayawardene and Taylor to choose from in the middle and the talented Pathan to follow in their wake. (PTI)

MI (Probable): Sachin Tendulkar, Richard Levi, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Raydu, James Franklin, Kieron Pollard, Dinesh Kartik (wk), Harbhajan Singh (c), Lasith Malinga, Pragyan Ojha, Munaf Patel
