Chennai Super Kings beat Pune Warriors by 13 runs: IPL 2012

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 12:38 PM PDT

Chennai Super Kings defeated Pune Warriors India by 13 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday. Chasing a total of 164 the Pune Warriors India innings got off to a shaky start after they lost their openers within first six overs. Robin Uthappa was the first to go after top-edging to mid-off and Jesse Ryder soon followed with a poor shot. Both wickets were taken by Nuwan Kulasekara.

Pune kept losing wickets at regular intervals though they somehow managed to keep a check on the run-rate with some big hitting in the middle overs.

Right before the strategic time-out before the 17th over Ashwin went for 17 runs which soothed the nerves of the Pune batsmen. A free-hit and four wides ensured the run-rate was kept at 10 runs an over.

With 34 required off the last three overs, the match seemed to be a déjà vu of the previous encounter between the two teams where Pune snatched the victory from MS Dhoni and co.

However the CSK skipper played his cards carefully this time around handing the ball to the experienced Bravo and Bollinger . He wasn't disappointed as the later removed dangerman Steven Smith in the 19th over to leave Pune needing 23 off 10 deliveries with Angelo Mathews the lone recognized batsman on crease.

Pune were further pushed to the wall after 21 was required off six balls with Bravo bowling the last over. There wasn't any surprise stored here as Mathews was bowled off the first delivery tilting the match totally in favor of the defending champions. After 20 overs Pune could manage runs short of the target

Earlier, winning the toss Sourav Ganguly had put CSK into bat. The Chennai openers got off to a solid start with Faf du Plessis and Subramanium Badrinath putting on 116 before both the openers were dismissed in consecutive balls by Marlon Samuels. CSK had a quiet innings till the 18th over before, skipper MS Dhoni hit some big shots to take the team to a competitive total.

Chennai Super Kings vs Pune Warriors Post Match IPL 2012

Kulasekara: We need to get the old ball to swing and get early wickets. I am glad we did that and took early wickets. It was a team effort.

Kulasekara is the Man of the Match for his bowling effort of 2/10

Dhoni: It was a target that was pretty acheivable. There was dew and it was easier to bat on, it was important to be aggressive. Some catches were good and I am glad that they were taken. We went for runs but took some early wickets. We are not worried too much about the heat, we have been playing here for five years.

Ganguly: Shoulder is alright, I landed on the chest. It was that sort of a game, we needed a big over which didn’t happen. MS batted well towards the end. We needed one 15-20 run over to be on par.

du Plessis gets an award for scoring the maximum sixes!

Pietersen ton steers Delhi to 5-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers: IPL 2012

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 10:17 AM PDT

Kevin Pietersen produced a blistering unbeaten 103 to almost single-handedly steer Delhi Daredevils (DD) to a five-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers (DC) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Delhi on Thursday, shifting them to first position in the points table.

The lanky Pietersen unleashed an array of breathtaking shots as he took the responsibility after his team was struggling at 23 for three to overhaul the target of 158 with five balls to spare at the Feroz Shah Kotla here.

During his sustained onslaught that saw him record his first century and highest score in Twenty20 format, Pietersen slammed a staggering nine sixes and six fours in his 64-ball knock.

The star England batsman was, however, dropped thrice and he ensured that Deccan paid the price for their sloppy fielding.

This was the Daredevils’ fourth win from five matches in even as Deccan suffered their fourth defeat on the trot.

Pietersen finished the match in style, smashing Ankit Sharma over his head for six, which also brought up his century, the second of this edition of IPL.

The highlight of Pietersen’s innings was the three successive sixes off Jean-Paul Duminy and the one against leg-spinner Amit Mishra, which was probably the biggest ever at this venue.

Bowling from the Delhi Gate end, Mishra was smashed straight down the ground by Pietersen, with the ball landing on the top tier of the old pavilion. As the ball disappeared, Sehwag, sitting on the dugout with his team-mates, was seen smiling.

Before that, one of the sixes against Duminy went 98 metres. And moments later, Steyn was hit over long-off for a maximum. Pietersen’s onslaught started after Mishra was introduced into the attack, and there was no looking back after that.

In pursuit of 158, Daredevils lost Naman Ojha as the batsman’s poor run of form continued. Skipper Virender Sehwag, after hitting Veer Pratap Singh straight down the wicket for a boundary, was dismissed by Dale Steyn who induced an edge for Dan Christian to take a simple catch at first slip.

Steyn, in fact, could have had one more to his name had Bharat Chipli not dropped Pietersen at mid-wicket. Pietersen was batting on six when he was offered the life.

Duminy then failed to take a difficult caught and bowled chance when Pietersen was on 68. He got one more life towards the end, just before reaching his century.

The Daredevils soon found themselves in a spot of bother at 23 for three in fifth over with the dismissal of normally calm and composed Mahela Jayawardene who, while trying to hit one over the in-field, looped a catch to his Sri Lankan teammate Kumar Sangakkara at wide mid-off, off the bowling of Dan Christian.

More misery was in store for the Daredevils as Ross Taylor, responding to Pietersen’s call for a risky single, was run out by a direct throw from Shikhar Dhawan. At 65 for six in the 10th over, Daredevils needed someone to hold the innings together and they found their man in Pietersen.

The home side needed 87 runs in the last 10 overs, but as long as Pietersen was at the crease, they were very much in with a chance. KP first flicked Steyn for a boundary through mid-wicket. On and off, he hit a few more of those before launching into a brutal assault, which left the Chargers shocked.

Earlier, Parthiv Patel (45) and Dhawan (45) chipped in with useful contributions as the Chargers managed to post a fighting 157 for eight. The two put on 71 runs for the second wicket in little under seven overs to put the Chargers back on track after the early loss of skipper Kumar Sangakkara.

But Shahbaz Nadeem, who triggered a batting collapse against Mumbai in Daredevils’ last match, did a repeat as the Chargers seemed to have lost the plot in the middle overs.

It was thanks to some effective hitting from Bharat Chipli that lifted the Chargers towards the end after Morne Morkel threatened to run through the line-up with two blows.

Chipli hit three fours and a six during his 17-ball 25.

Morkel finished with impressive figures of three for 23 while Nadeem was even better with three for 16 runs.

Opting to bat, the Chargers were dealt an early blow as they lost Sangakkara in the third over off Morne Morkel. But Dhawan and Patel not only steadied the ship, but also maintained a healthy scoring rate, bringing up the team’s 50 in 36 balls.

Both Dhawan and Patel played some effective shots, particularly on the on side — the two left-handers executed the pull and hook shots quite often and to good effect.

A collapse was, however, waiting to happen, and it was Nadeem once again who triggered it. While the 22-year-old left-arm spinner bowled to a good line and length, he must thank Dhawan for his first wicket.

Living up to his reputation of throwing it all after getting a start, Dhawan went for a needless reverse sweep to be trapped in front of the wicket off Nadeem’s first delivery of the match.

At the other end, Patel was living dangerously as he got three reprieves. Lady luck was on his side, but the pint-sized batsman from Gujarat failed to capitalise.

Nadeem had his second wicket as Patel’s sweep was caught at deep square-leg by Jayawardene. Next to go was Duminy as the South African holed out to the mid-wicket fielder, giving Nadeem his third wicket.

Dan Christian tried to hold the innings together but fell after collecting 19 runs from 21 balls. Morkel then sent back Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Steyn to make it 134 for seven in the 18th over. In the end, it took a bit of enterprise from Chipli to take the Chargers past 150.

Ganguly: We have played reasonably well, we are happy with the performance. It has been a balanced performance, we need to be more consistent. These are still early days and we need to play well on this Chennai wicket that looks good for 40 overs of cricket. Dinda is out and Murali Kartik is in.

Dhoni: It has been a tough journey, but we aren’t really disappointed. We haven’t lost in a stretch. Ups and downs are a part of the game. The hospitality is great, so the travel hasn’t been hectic either. Hopefully, we will get better.

Deccan Chargers Vs Delhi Daredevils Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Pietersen: To come from England and play here is very intimidating but this is brilliant. I would love to have England players here, I absolutely love playing in India and play in the IPL. To play with guys like Sehwag and Steyn is an absolutely brilliant experience. Beautiful surface, the curator was brilliant and the spectators were even better.

Kevin Pietersen is the Man of the Match for his 64 ball 103.

Sehwag: We’v strengthened our batting. We can expect an innings like that from KP, he did a fantastic job. We wanted to go with an Indian bowling line up and the other teams will get scared of our batting line up. Nadeem is brilliant, he bowled in the powerplays in the previous games and did well after the powerplays today too. We love to have the Delhi crowd in every game, I know it’s hot there but they’ve still come out for a 4 PM game to support us.

Sangakkara: We had our chances, we had a great chance to get KP out early but this shows that if we hold on to catches, we can win games. KP was fantastic, he batted brilliantly. We got off to a good strat – around 100 in 12 overs was very good – but we couldn’t maintain it.

Pattinson likely to miss rest of WI tour due to injury

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 06:19 AM PDT

Exciting young Australian fast bowler James Pattinson has injured his back and will miss the remainder of the West Indies tour. Pattinson is not likely to bowl on the final day of the second Test here or play the last Test in Dominica, beginning on Monday.

With Pattinson out, Australia are left with just one front-line fast bowler, Ben Hilfenhaus, when they try to push for an unlikely victory in the rain-marred second Test, reports the Telegraph. Australia ended the fourth day at 73 for 3, a lead of 127, and will force the pace in the hope of bowling the hosts in two sessions.

Pattinson, 21, is playing his first Test in almost four months after breaking down with stress fractures of the foot during the New Year’s Test against India in Sydney. In five Tests after making his debut last summer, he has claimed 26 wickets at 19.

Peter Siddle was ruled out of second Test and is in doubt for the series after suffering back problems during Australia’s dramatic first Test victory in Barbados, while Ryan Harris was rested. Australia played two spinners in Trinidad, opening the bowling with recalled left-armer Michael Beer, while off-spinner Nathan Lyon claimed 5 for 68 in the first innings.

Bangladesh High Court orders Pakistan tour delay by 4 weeks

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 06:02 AM PDT

The Bangladesh high court on Thursday ordered the national team’s upcoming tour of Pakistan to be postponed for at least four weeks due to security fears.

Bangladesh were set to play a 50-over game and a Twenty20 international on April 29 and 30 in Lahore, the first international cricket matches in the troubled country for three years.

But Additional Attorney General M.K. Rahman told AFP that the high court in Dhaka had ordered Bangladesh’s cricket authorities to explain why the tour was scheduled to go ahead despite concerns over the team’s safety.

“It asked the cricket board to explain in the next four weeks. During the four weeks, the court imposed an injunction on the cricket team’s tour to Pakistan,” he said.

Bangladesh would be the first team to visit Pakistan since a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus during the Lahore Test in 2009, when eight people died and seven visiting players and an assistant coach were injured.

The high court gave the order following a petition by a lawyer and a university teacher.

Pakistani political leaders, players and fans had welcomed the planned tour, but in Bangladesh concern over the visit has grown since it was announced on Sunday.

“We told the court that the Pakistan tour would risk the lives of our cricketers,” Hassan Azim, lawyer for the two petitioners, told AFP.

“Pakistan is not a safe place for an international sports event. No other international teams are travelling to Pakistan. Why should Bangladesh go? The decision was imposed on the cricketers.”

Anti-Pakistan feelings still run strong in Bangladesh, which was part of Pakistan until 1971 when it won independence in a bloody nine-month war in which Dhaka says an estimated three million people lost their lives.

Bangladesh’s coach Stuart Law, from Australia, this week expressed fears about the team’s schedule.

“It’s got to be made sure by the two associating boards that everyone is 100 percent safe to go,” he said. “I have spent time with the players and everyone is a bit concerned.”

Law declined to confirm if he would go on the tour, while Bangladesh’s cricket authorities said they were seeking clearance from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Foreign teams shunned Pakistan after the 2009 attacks, forcing them to play their home series on neutral venues, mostly in the United Arab Emirates.

Toss: Deccan Chargers have won the toss and elected to bat

Sangakkara: We need to stick to our basics and play well. Hodge and Rohit Sharma outplayed us in the last couple of games, we need to get our acts together. We need to understand that the next game is out there to be won. We will bat first. That’s our strength, even though we have lost the last two games defending. We’ve made one change. Young Veer – the fast bowler – comes in.

Sehwag: At the moment, we are doing well and we’ll look to continue the winning momentum. It is important to win in front of home crowd since they always come out in large numbers. We are going in with the same team. We would have also bowled first, so the toss is irrelevant.

FICA raises red flag over Bangladesh tour of Pakistan

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 01:16 AM PDT

The Federation of International Cricketers Association has described Bangladesh’s decision to tour Pakistan for an ODI and a Twenty20 match as “chaotic and contradictory”, saying players’ safety should not be put at risk to “enhance someone’s political or other aspirations”.

Bangladesh, in the last week of April, would be the first Test-playing team to tour Pakistan after the 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore.

“As the peak body of player associations, of which the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) is a full member, FICA considers the matter of player safety as paramount in the consideration of whether any Event or series should proceed,” May said.

“This decision of whether Bangladesh should tour Pakistan needed to be a concise and transparent process. Unfortunately all we have witnessed is seemingly a complete lack of any process and a series of indecisive and contradictory comments, particularly coming from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Mustafa Kamal,” he added.

“The actions and words of Mr Kamal certainly give the impression of confirming rumors that there has been a deal reached between Pakistan Cricket Board and Mr Kamal, that PCB will nominate Mr Kamal for the position of ICC Vice President if Bangladesh agrees to tour Pakistan.”

Kamal, following the March security delegation visit to Pakistan, confirmed that Bangladesh would send a team there.

After his return to Bangladesh, Kamal retracted and was reported to have stated that it would only send a team to tour Pakistan, if the ICC would send neutral umpires.

Following this PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf stated that “the PCB will review it’s relation with Bangladesh if they refuse to tour Pakistan.”

Later Kamal told the ICC Board that even if there were no neutral umpires, Bangladesh would tour Pakistan. But according to media reports in Dhaka, Kamal has retracted saying that Bangladesh would only send a team if the ICC sent neutral umpires.

“What has resulted since has been a series of actions and comments that rather than reassure everyone of the safety of such a tour, only have created heightened apprehensions and doubts among players re the safety of the tour and the motives of those involved in the decision,” May said.

“The constantly changing positions from Mr Kamal about whether to send a team or not if the ICC decides not to send neutral umpires is hardly a sign of confidence that the BCB actually does believe that it is safe to tour,” he added.

“The players’ safety, and the safety of the people around them, should be all that matters in this issue and the only factor taken into account when deciding whether to tour or not. Players’ safety should not be put at risk to enhance someone’s political or other aspirations.”

May said Kamal should stay out of the decision-making in this case and BCB decide the matter.

“The BCB President has a massive conflict of interest. The matter should not be decided by Mr Kamal alone, it should be a decision of the entire BCB Board, after all the directors of the Board will be exposed to a significant potential liability if issues arise during the tour,” he said.

“One would expect that a person who holds the responsibility of the BCB president and also of an ICC Director would address the conflict of interest and remove himself from any decision in this matter,” he added.

Preview: Chennai Super Kings Vs Pune Warriors, IPL 5, 19 April 2012

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 04:30 PM PDT

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings would look to get over the disappointment of three losses when they take on Pune Warriors on their home turf, aiming to extract revenge on the visitors for defeat in their previous IPL match.

With three defeats from five games so far, including the one against Pune Warriors, the Super Kings have just four points. But they are in a familiar situation as in the previous two editions of the tournament.

In 2010, they were on the brink of elimination before they bounced back and won the competition, similarly in the last edition too, they came from behind to emerge victorious.

Pune, who have six points and better net run-rate than Chennai, would though start as favourites tomorrow.

Given the trend in this edition of the IPL, it requires a dash of recklessness to predict the outcome, but the Super Kings have been in this situation before and the experience should see them past the Warriors.

The Super Kings would be looking towards their skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to provide some spark, like he did in the previous seasons, which had turned their fortunes around.

The hosts would be happy to be playing in front of their home crowd and hope to repeat their performance of the last game here when they snatched a sensational five-wicket victory in the very last ball against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Chennai will also take heart from the fact that the three defeats that they have suffered this season were close matches and the reverses were mainly due to their inability to fire as a unit.

While Murali Vijay hasn’t really done anything of note till now, his opening partner Faf du Plessis has proved his worth. Dhoni also has shown some spark after a quiet start to the tournament. Allrounder Ravindra Jadeja has also done a decent job.

Meanwhile, Pune Warriors skipper Sourav Ganguly has his work cut out, having lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore last night in a thriller at Bangalore. And the onus is on him to regroup his forces and renew their assault that they have displayed in this season.

Pune would depend heavily on their opening pair of Jesse Ryder and Robin Uthappa, to give them a solid start, besides banking on Steven Smith down the order.

Ganguly is yet to play to his potential and the Warriors would hope him to fire against the defending champions.

West Indian allrounder Marlon Samuels has been a key player for the Warriors, who has contributed with both bat and the ball, though he has been held up for “questionable action”.

Ashok Dinda and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar have come good with the ball and would look to stick to their job.

As for the Warriors, their performance has not exactly matched their potential, both in batting and bowling, and yet, in patches, they have shown the sort of explosiveness that can take apart any opponent.

Tomorrow’s battle appears to be between equals with the pressure more on the hosts. (PTI)
