IPL 2012: Delhi Daredevils thrash Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 01:41 PM PDT

Irfan Pathan scored a brisk unbeaten 42 to guide Delhi Daredevils to a comfortable eight-wicket win over hosts Kolkata Knight Riders in a rain-curtailed 12-overs-a-side IPL 5 match on Thursday.

Irfan struck three sixes and two boundaries to help Delhi reach 100 with five balls to spare and make a winning start to their IPL 5 campaign.

Earlier, Morne Morkel scalped three wickets 3 for 18 runs, while Umesh Yadav and Roelof van der Merwe bagged two wickets apiece to restrict the Knight Riders to 97 for nine after they were put into bat following a two-and-half hours rain delay.

Chasing the small total, Aaron Finch (30 from 27 balls) and Virender Sehwag (20 off 13) gave the Daredevils a solid start putting on 49 for the opening wicket.

The duo did not seem to be in any trouble against the Knight Riders attack as Finch made the bulk of the scoring during the partnership, while Sehwag was content in rotating the strike.

But two quick wickets, after Kallis gave the breakthrough in the form of Finch, brought the crowd back on its feet with the match tentalisingly poised as Daredevils needed 41 runs off 28 balls to win.

But Irfan and Glenn Maxwell (3 not out) had other ideas as the Indian southpaw paced his innings beautifully to complete a clinical chase.

As the asking rate began to rise with 35 needed from 20 balls, Irfan hit Kallis over long on for a six to bring relief for the visitors.

In the next over, Irfan smashed Marchant de Lange for two sixes to make the chase a routine affair for Delhi.

It was the duo of Yusuf versus Irfan in the very next over, as the younger brother lifted one over extra cover boundary to make the equation two runs from the last over.

Earlier, the Daredevils came up with a fine bowling display to restrict Knight Riders to 97 for nine.

Put into bat after a two-and-half hours of rain delay, the Knight Riders batsmen struggled to get off the blocks against Delhi’s bowling attack led by South African speedster Morkel.

Indian pace sensation Yadav and Van der Merwe also did fine jobs from the other, picked up two wickets apiece.

Laxmi Ratan Shukla top-scored for the home team with a 17-ball 26, which was studded with two sixes and a lone boundary. He resurrected Kolkata’s innings after they were reduced to 54 for five in 6.4 overs.

On a day when their star batsmen including skipper Gautam Gambhir (16), Jacques Kallis (4) and Yusuf (0) flopped, Bengal youngster Debabrata Das impressed with a quick 18 from nine balls that included a huge six off Morkel.

The Knight Riders found themselves in alien conditions even at home as Delhi pace duo of Morkel and Yadav rattled their batting line-up after Van der Merwe gave the visitors their first breakthrough.

Van der Merwe, who shared the new ball with Irfan, gave Delhi the breakthrough in his very first over when he cut short a dangerous-looking Brendon McCullum’s (9) trapping him plumb in front of the wicket.

But there after Morkel and Yadav reduced Delhi to 31 for four by the fourth over.

The South African pacer rattled his compatriot Kallis’ middle stump with a toe-crushing yorker and followed it up with Manoj Tiwary’s wicket in similar fashion in the very next ball.

Yadav then took the prize scalp of Yusuf for a duck to reduce the Knight Riders to 31 for four.

In dire need of a partnership, Debabrata broke the shackles with two sixes — first off Maxwell and then Morkel.

He made his intentions clear hitting the South African speedster over long on boundary, but his fine innings came to an end because of a misunderstanding with Shukla.

Irfan Pathan: It was not a good feeling hitting my brother for a boundary. Don’t want my family to be angry with me. The fast bowler’s pace helped me with the timing. I am looking forward to taking more wickets in this tournament and helping with the batting as well.

Irfan Pathan is the Man of the Match for his 42*(20)

Gambhir: Morkel bowled really well. 96 was a par score and Das and Laxmi’s batting was a positive from this match. Irfan batted really well and his innings took the match away from us.

Sehwag: Boys did really well. We bowled first after winning the toss and that decision proved to be the correct one. Very impressed with our fielding effort. Finch was playing really well at the start

Mumbai Indians vs Pune Warriors, Match 3, IPL 5 – Preview

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 12:45 PM PDT

Buoyed by a comprehensive eight-wicket win over defending champions Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians would be eager to continue their winning momentum when they take on a new-look Pune Warriors in their IPL match at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.

The season opener could always be tricky and the Super Kings found that out at their home venue yesterday, even as Mumbai Indians started on a very confident note and that should give the Mumbai outfit a clear edge in the match against the Sourav Ganguly-led Warriors.

Their bowling and fielding were top class against two-time champions Chennai and it is difficult to visualise a victory for the Warriors if Mumbai can repeat the show.

Harbhajan Singh, who took over the mantle of the Mumbai outfit from Sachin Tendulkar after the latter relinquished it ahead of the start of the tournament, led the team in an aggressive style and that also turned out to be a big bonus.

Team’s new recruit South African Richard Levi also started impressively with a 35-ball 50 on his IPL debut to clinch the man-of-the-match award.

Two other foreigners, who are expected to play all the games — Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga and West Indian Kieron Pollard — were also in the thick of things with the ball.

The only worry ahead of tomorrow’s game is the finger injury sustained by Tendulkar when he fended at a lifter from leftarm pacer Doug Bollinger and retired hurt.

“It was good toss to win, wicket was quite unpredictable, not the same wicket that we played earlier, all the boys played well and Levi played terrific,” said Harbhajan.

Harbhajan also noted the outstanding work on the field by his team, effecting three run-outs to halt Chennai’s progress.

The Warriors, on the other hand, have a tough task on hands as their key player and last year’s skipper Yuvraj Singh, will be missing, recovering from the treatment for a rare form of cancer.

The man-of-the-tournament in India’s World Cup victory in 2011, Yuvraj had brought the much-needed balance to the outfit with his power-packed batting (343 runs in 14 games) and effective left-arm spin (nine wickets) last season.

Even Australia captain Michael Clarke will also be available only after his country’s campaign ends in the Caribbean on April 27. Also unavailable is Sri Lanka allrounder Angelo Mathews, who is busy representing the island nation in the Test series at home against England.

The wily customer that he is, Ganguly could play only four games last season after joining the squad as a late injury replacement.

He has one good option to fill in for the absent Yuvraj — West Indian Marlon Samuels — who had recently played in the ODI and T20 series against Australia at home.

Samuels can belt the ball hard, rotate the strike besides bowling a tight spell of off spin when needed, apart from being a very good fielder like Yuvraj.

Samuels, with his vast experience, could be the key player for Warriors this time around along with another new recruit, Ashok Dinda, in the pace department. Dinda is a good addition along with the fit-again Ashish Nehra, who missed the entire 2011 season because of an injury.

Bangladesh pocket dynamo Tamim Iqbal, a temporary replacement, should also be a big boost for the team in launching the innings along with home player Robin Uthappa.

The over-dependence on the South African pace duo of Alphonso Thomas and Wayne Parnell was a setback for Pune last year as they started well before going off the boil.

There are other home players like Manish Pandey, who had a decent last season (246 in 10 games), and young wicketkeeper-batsman Mahesh Rawat.

Murali Karthik struggled to get among the wickets in 2011 and the Warriors would be looking forward to an improved effort from this experienced left arm slow.

Lanky leggie Rahul Sharma, who had caught the national attention through IPL last season and also booked a berth in the Indian 50-over squad, would be a key bowler for Pune. (PTI)

Sehwag: Rain is always frustrating but we have to accept that, we are ready. I wish all (KP, Mahela, Warner) were available but they are not there today. We’ll do our best and hope for the result to come in our favour. Shorter game, so we’ll bowl first. We want to restrict them to under 8 runs per over. Good opportunity for other players to get a game and perform.

Gambhir: Excited about the new season and looking forward to it. We were more or less sure about our eleven so the rain doesn’t change that. 12 over game, we’ll look to put runs on the board and take it from there. T20 is always about excitement and it’s going to be even more entertaining today as it is a 12 over match. I know Sehwag well but he knows a lot of secrets about us as well.
