Gayle, AB guides RCB to easy victory over KXIP: IPL 2012

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 12:37 PM PDT

Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers guided Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to an easy victory over Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Mohali on Friday, moving them to the seventh position in the points table.

Gayle and de Villiers shared a 131-run partnership after RCB lost wickets at quick succession.

Saurabh Tiwary, who batted brilliantly against Pune Warriors, mistimed his pull shot that went straight to keeper Nitin Saini’s hand.

Parvinder Awana was pick of the bowlers taking four wickets, taking crucial wicket of Gayle and dismissed Mayank Agarwal and Virat Kohli in his first over of the match.

Earlier, David Hussey and debutant Azahar Mahmood guided Kings XI Punjab to a respectable total of 163 against Royal Challengers Bangalore after Bangalore bowlers displayed a disciplined show in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Mohali.

Stand-in captain David Hussey looked well-settled, scoring 41 hitting four boundaries when Harshal Patel bowled him in the end of 15th over.

Mahmood playing his first IPL match, scored a quick knock of 33 off 14-balls.

Zaheer Khan struck early in the match when he scalped Punjab openers Nitin Saini and Paul Valthaty in successive overs.

Andrew McDonald provided the third blow when he dismissed a well-settled Shaun Marsh, who scored 26, consisting of three fours and one six.

McDonald struck again taking the wicket of Miller, who was providing support to Hussey.

Earlier, Bangalore won the toss and put Punjab to bat first. McDonald came in the place of Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan for Bangalore whereas Nitin Saini, Azhar Mahmood and Miller came in place of Paras Dogra, Adam Gilchrist and Dimitri Mascarenhas for Punjab.

Gayle: The wicket was good to bat on. It was a tough job for us after we lost some quick wickets. AB gave me good company and I am happy that Bangalore have won two games on the trot. I am glad that no one got hurt today. I agree with the fact that people and umpires must wear some protective gear so that they suffer no harm. Thanks to Tia (the girl in the crowd whose nose was broken in the match against Pune thanks to one of the sixes hit by Gayle), I got another medal and I hope she is doing well at the hospital. We need not panic and we have to play calmly. Anything can happen in this tournament and I am looking forward to the game against Rajasthan.

Chris Gayle is the MoM for his 87 off 56 balls.

David Hussey: We were 10 runs short. Azhar Mahmood got us back into the game with some good hits. There are a lot of positives in the game. Awana was very good and Mahmood is a good addition to the team.

Vettori: Chris and AB are experienced players and we got a lot of confidence from the previous game. They showed their confidence while batting today. Chris can turn the game around with some big hits and AB can hang in there. We lost three games on the trot, but we are looking to play some good cricket. It is a long tournament and anything can happen.

Vettori: There is some general talk about how many matches to win to make it to the qualifiers but once you are in a schedule where you are playing a match so often then you just tend to think about the next match. It looks like a good pitch. We are going to have a bowl. We want to make the most of the grass on this pitch. Andrew McDonald comes in for Dilshan today, we just think he is more suited to these conditions. Restricting the opposition to anything under 150 would be good.

David Hussey: I feel sorry for Gilchrist since this is the 1st competitive game he has missed in 16 years. It gives an opportunity to debutant players today though, Mahmood and Miller. I would have chased because of the weather. We have a great swing bowler in Praveen Kumar and we hope he does well.

West Indies call up Fudadin for third Test against Australia

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 01:29 AM PDT

Left-hander Assad Fudadin was on Thursday called into the West Indies squad for the third and final Test against Australia which starts at Windsor Park in Dominica on Monday.

He comes in for leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo.

Middle-order batsman Kirk Edwards, who was in the squad for the second Test, has not recovered from a leg injury and is not available for selection.

Fudadin, a 26-year-old from Guyana, is a steady batsman, who was the second highest run-scorer in the recently-concluded Regional 4-Day competition where he made 576 runs at an average of 48 with a top score of 108.

Chairman of the West Indies Cricket Board selection panel, Clyde Butts said: “Fudadin has been a member of the West Indies A Team for a while now and we have seen signs of development and improvement.”

“This year he batted well in the Regional 4-Day Tournament, and made over 500 runs including two centuries. He was very consistent in the middle-order. He can also bowl medium-pace and that is an asset.”

The second Test at Queen’s Park Oval here was abandoned as a draw on Thursday after Australia won the opener in Barbados by three wickets.

West Indies squad for third Test:

Darren Sammy (capt), Adrian Barath, Carlton Baugh (wkt), Kraigg Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Fidel Edwards, Assad Fudadin, Kieran Powell, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Shane Shillingford

Australia-West Indies 2nd Test ends in damp draw

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 03:50 PM PDT

Persistent rain spoiled a West Indies run-chase at 53 for 2 in pursuit of a teasing target of 215 in 61 overs against Australia as the second Test ended in a damp draw on Thursday. Showers arrived 40 minutes before tea and there was no more play possible on the fifth and final day at Queen’s Park Oval. Australia, who had a 1-0 series lead after victory in the first Test, retained the Frank Worrell Trophy as it takes an unassailable lead to the third and final match in Dominica.

Captain Darren Sammy’s unbeaten 30 off 26 balls ignited West Indies’ charge after his counterpart Michael Clarke declared Australia’s second innings on 160 for 8 midway through the second session. Fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus (2 for 22) landed two early blows for Australia with the wickets of both openers. Left-hander Kieran Powell, promoted as the hosts showed aggressive intentions, was plumb leg before to an inswinger while Adrian Barath sparred at one that left him and edged to Clarke at first slip at 13 for 2. Sammy lashed four fours and a six to quickly shift the momentum back to the Caribbean

But steady showers, which had also badly affected day four, returned to have the final say. Darren Bravo was unbeaten on 8 at the end. Earlier, Australia stretched its overnight 73 for 3 to 160 for 8 before the confident declaration by Clarke. Fast bowler Kemar Roach completed his second five-wicket haul of the Test, claiming 5 for 41 to complete match figures of 10 for 146. Roach, who took three wickets on day four, added Michael Hussey (24) and Hilfenhaus (0).

The start of the final day was delayed for 45 minutes due to a wet outfield caused by Wednesday’s deluge, which caused an abbreviated day four. But the home team started strongly on resumption, with Fidel Edwards finally gaining reward for a probing spell. Former captain Ricky Ponting struck three fours off 85 balls in compiling 41 before he pulled an Edwards short ball straight to deep backward square leg at 93 for 4.

Clarke followed two runs later, Sammy plucking a magnificent return catch in his right hand to derail the Aussies. Clarke scored 15 off 51 balls. But Hussey and Matthew Wade gradually calmed Australia’s nerves with a busy stand that took their team to lunch on 123 for 5. The pair was aggressive after the break, showing Australia’s keenness to push for a series-sealing victory. The stand reached 50 before Roach bowled Hussey off the inside edge and plucked out Hilfenhaus’ off-stump three balls later.

When Nathan Lyon top-edged a sweep of Shane Shillingford to be caught by Sammy, the declaration arrived. Hilfenhaus gave Australia a dream start but Sammy tilted the balance before the rain arrived to spoil what may have been an absorbing finish. The third and final Test begins in Dominica on Monday.

Preview: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Kings XI Punjab, IPL 5, 20 April 2012

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 03:30 PM PDT

West Indian swashbuckler Chris Gayle’s devastating form will be a cause of immense worry for the inconsistent Kings XI Punjab when they clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore in an IPL match on Friday.

Punjab slumped to their third defeat, first in their own backyard, when Kolkata Knight Riders beat them comprehensively by eight wickets on Wednesday.

Inconsistent batting has been the chief cause of concern for the Adam Gilchrist-led side, which managed only 124/7 against KKR after electing to bat first.

RCB, on the other hand, displayed sensational batting in the win over Pune Warriors in their previous match.

Gayle’s sensational knock of 81 of 48, studded with eight sixes including five in a single over, helped the franchise snatch a thrilling last ball win over Warriors in Bangalore this week when they chased down a formidable 182.

Kings XI and RCB have so far played five matches each and are placed at number seven and eighth in the points table respectively, but the Bangalore side will go into this match high on confidence.

Punjab suffered two initial losses to start with and then had back-to-back wins under their belt, but slipped against KKR again, whom they had beaten only a few days back.

Inconsistent form of their top order, that includes Gilchrist, who pulled a hamstring in Wednesday’s match, has been the local franchise’s main concern. The skipper is yet to hit a big knock, with Wednesday’s 40 being his top score.

Gilchrist’s Aussie compatriot, Shaun Marsh has also not yet shown his full potential and the batting hero of last year’s edition Paul Valthaty has failed miserably and may face the axe.

Punjab’s batting has been revolving around Gilchrist, Marsh and David Hussey and it’s the inconsistency which worries Gilchrist.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who now has a multi-city visa to play for Punjab, may now be included in the side soon to boost the middle order.

Punjab’s bowling attack comprising English pacer Dimitri Mascarenhas, Praveen Kumar, Harmeet Bansal and Piyush Chawla has been better but has never looked lethal.

For Bangalore, Virat Kohli would be hoping that he comes good as the dashing batsman has made only 109 runs from five games that includes 57 against Chennai Super Kings at Chennai on April 12, which RCB lost despite posting a total of 205 runs on the board.

After his failure in a couple of games, AB de Villiers was back in form in the last match against Warriors making 33. His innovative stroke-playing may come in handy for the RCB.

RCB skipper Daniel Vettori, who may have got only four wickets so far, has been bowling a tight line and has been able to contain the batsmen along with Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan.

However, RCB will look towards Indian strike bowler Zaheer Khan, who has so far earned five scalps, to do a better job on Friday.

Khan’s most impressive performance came in the match against Rajasthan Royals, which the latter won by massive 59 runs, in which Ajinkya Rahane had made 103 not out. The pacer had figures of 4-1-15-1 in that match.

Teams (from):

Kings XI Punjab: Adam Gilchrist (Capt.), Shaun Marsh, Dimitri Mascarenhas, David Hussey, Praveen Kumar, Bipul Sharma, Piyush Chawla, Parvinder Awana, Azhar Mahmood, James Faulkner, Paul Valthaty, Bhargav Bhatt, Kyle Abbott, Love Ablish, Amit Yadav, Siddharth Chitnis, Ben Cutting, Paras Dogra, Gurkeerat Singh, Harmeet Singh, Ryan Harris, Vikramjeet Malik, Mandeep Singh, David Miller, Abhishek Nayar, Ramesh Powar, Nathan Rimmington, Nitin Saini, Shalabh Srivastava, Sunny Singh.

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Daniel Vettori (Capt.), Mayank Agarwal, KP Appanna, Sreenath Aravind, Arun Karthik, Raju Bhatkal, AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Muralidharen Gautam, Chris Gayle, Mohammad Kaif, Abrar Kazi, Zaheer Khan, Virat Kohli, Charl Langeveldt, Andrew McDonald, Abhimanyu Mithun, Muttiah Muralitharan, Karun Nair, Dirk Nannes, Ryan Ninan, Harshal Patel, Asad Pathan, Luke Pomersbach, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rilee Rossouw, Jamaluddin Syed Mohammad, Saurabh Tiwary, Vinay Kumar, Vijay Zol.

Australia Vs West Indies 2nd Test Post Match Presentation 2012

Posted: 19 Apr 2012 02:44 PM PDT

Roach: The wicket was not assisting the pacers a lot. We needed to be accurate and patient. Fidel bowled really well and was unlucky not to have got the rewards, Shillingford was outstanding, he displayed a lot of patience on an unresponsive track. We are looking forward to the Dominica Test on Monday and hope for a better show.

Kemar Roach is the MoM for his 10/146

Sammy: We were positive about the chase. We were going after the target, we lost a couple of early wickets but we still had Shiv and Narsingh to take care. We went in as an ODI match and I felt that by going after the bowling, I could have put pressure on them. I am very happy for Kemar, he has had a tough time last year and it was nice to see him do well here. We know our conditions here pretty well. Kirk is unfortunately out of this series, we will look to square the series in Dominica.

Michael Clarke: I think it was going to be a good Test if not for the rain. Disappointing for both teams and the fans. We will now go to Dominica and will look to seal the series. We will need to do better in Dominica, we have been pretty inconsistent in the series. Lyon copped a fair bit in the media and it was good for him to show up. We will look at the conditions in Dominica and decide upon the combination. The wicket was very slow out here and it hampered our stroke making ability. We will look to do well in Dominica.
