Deccan Chargers beat Pune Warriors to claim first victory in IPL 2012

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 01:28 PM PDT

Cameron White scored a quickfire half century to help Deccan Chargers (DC) register their first win in the tournament, beating Pune Warriors India (PWI) by 18 runs in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Pune on Thursday.

White smashed a strokeful 78 off just 46 balls and together with JP Duminy (26 not out) added crucial 75 runs for the fifth wicket to power Deccan to 177 for four after electing to bat.

And then Deccan bowlers rose to the occasion for the first time in IPL season five as Pune lost wickets at regular intervals to be retstricted to 159 for seven at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium.

Debutant Ashish Reddy (2 for 32) and Rusty Theron (2 for 37) starred with the ball for Deccan, picking up two wickets apiece.

The victory is Deccan first win in this year’s IPL after five straight loses and a wash out game.

Pune’s run chase started on an awry note as they lost both their openers — Jesse Ryder and Manish Pandey — inside the 50-run mark.

While dangerous Ryder fell early with the scoreboard reading just 15, young Pandey showed some sparks in his 21-run knock before being bowled by Theron in his opening over at the team score of 43.

Pune captain Sourav Ganguly (23), who was dropped by Duminy at point in the first delivery of the 10th over by Manpreet Gony, failed to capitalise on the chance as fell three balls later, caught brilliantly by substitude fielder Daniel Harris at short cover.

Reddy then struck twice in the 14th over to derail Pune’s chase.

Reddy first bowled Robin Uthappa as he went for a cheeky shot and then four balls later accounted for a struggling Marlon Samuels, caught by Deccan skipper Kumar Sangakkara.

Steven Smith, however, was in no mood to give up without a fight and stuck a few lusty shots before perishing in the 17th over, caught by Duminy off Theron.

Mithun Manhas played a 22-run cameo towards the end but it proved to be too little too late.

Earlier, opting to bat, openers Parthiv Patel (24) and Shikhar Dhawan (16) ensured a quick start to Deccan innings, smashing Ashish Nehra for three fours to pick up 16 runs off the first over.

They duo stitched 39 runs off four overs for the opening stand before losing Dhawan.

Deccan received another blow 11 runs later when Patel was caught by Mithun Manhas at deep square-leg off Kumar.

White and Sangakkara shared 33 runs for the fourth wicket before the later was cleaned up by Sharma.

White, however, seemed in ominous form as he went about his business in style, notching up his first half century of the tournament in just 35 balls with the help of five boundaries and two huge sixes.

In Duminy, White got an able partner as the duo added massive 75 runs off just 38 deliveries for the fifth wicket to help Deccan post a decent total on the board.

White was the aggressor among the two and clobbered Sharma for a four and two consecutive sixes to pick up 19 runs off the 16th over.

After settling down, it was Duminy’s turn to open up his arms and he did that perfectly, hitting Samules straight back over his head for a towering six.

But a ball later, Samuels got the prized scalp of White, caught by Alfonso Thomas at deep cover boundary as the batsman went for another huge one.

Ishant Jaggi remained unbeaten 10 along with Duminy. (PTI)

Deccan Chargers Vs Pune Warriors Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 12:44 PM PDT

Cameron White: It’s a good feeling to get a win. Hopefully it’s a start of few more wins. It was nice to hit a few in the middle. Was a bit out of form. I was suffering from cramps, but am ok now.

Cameron White is the Man of the Match for his 78(46)

Sangakkara: Finally on the board. Great effort from Cameron and Duminy. Young Reddy was great as well. We got a great total against Rajasthan and threw it away. It’s important to defend a total and not only to get a big one on board. Getting through the first four overs with spin was something that worked in our favor

Ganguly: We gave away 15-20 runs extra. Somebody needed to carry on while batting. We will have to look at Smith’s place in the batting order. White played the spinners really well. We had the game under control till the 13th over. We came back in the last few overs with the ball, but lost it in the middle overs.

Pune Warriors (Playing XI): Jesse Ryder, Manish Pandey, Sourav Ganguly(c), Robin Uthappa(w), Steven Smith, Marlon Samuels, Mithun Manhas, Alfonso Thomas, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, Ashish Nehra

Deccan Chargers (Playing XI): Kumar Sangakkara(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Parthiv Patel(w), Jean-Paul Duminy, Cameron White, Ishank Jaggi, Ankit Sharma, Ashish Reddy, Amit Mishra, Juan Theron, Manpreet Gony

Sangakkara: It has been quite tough. We have come close in some games but not won in important situations. We are chopping and changing at the moment and looking for our best combination. We are really hungry to win a few games now. The luck with the toss has been 50-50 I’d say. We have got to play well and really win and make sure we get a good total on the board. The decision to bat first has got to do with the pitch, it might just turn a little later.

Ganguly: It is good to see Yuvraj here in the dugout. It is very kind of the IPL to let him sit in the dugout. Yes he said he would come with scissors but I got the job done yesterday. We have done well until now, Delhi is a good team and we got the better of them at Delhi but they beat us at home. I would have bowled anyway. It is a good surface, it plays better than it actually looks.

Cricket South Africa turns down Bangladesh series

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 02:12 AM PDT

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has turned down a request from Bangladesh to play three One-day Internationals and five Twenty20 matches ahead of the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in September.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had approached CSA with the request to play a series in May after their tour to Pakistan, which was scheduled for end of April, was postponed by a court order.

“Unfortunately there are too many practical obstacles that prevent us from accepting this commitment,” said CSA Acting CEO Jacques Faul.

“At the moment most of our senior Proteas are spread around the world in England and India (in the IPL) and those who are at home are undergoing rehabilitation from injuries picked up during the past season,” he added.

Faul also said that as it is the South African team is scheduled to play a number of series this season.

“We also have to bear in mind that the Proteas’ squad has a hectic schedule ahead of it with very important tours to England and Australia with the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka sandwiched in between,” he said.

Faul said he had to agree with the decision of the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) that the series against Bangladesh could not be accommodated in an already crowded calendar.

SACA chief executive Tony Irish said that the proposal of Bangladesh series has come in a little too late.

“Unfortunately this request has come through very late in the day by which stage most of the senior players had committed themselves to professional contracts abroad and it would be unfair to ask them to renege on them,” said Irish.

“The Proteas’ team management and players have also put their plans in place in the build-up to their tour of England and it would be impossible to change them at this stage. It is going to be a very tough tour and we will need a fully fresh and fit squad for this engagement,” he added.(PTI)

IPL 2012 Preview: Pune Warriors Vs Deccan Chargers, 26 April 2012

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 03:30 PM PDT

After suffering a comprehensive defeat against Delhi Daredevils in their previous match, Pune Warriors would look to bounce back in the tournament when they take on bottom-placed Deccan Chargers in their Indian Premier League match here tomorrow.

The Warriors lost to Daredevils by eight wickets with four overs to spare yesterday but they start as clear favourites against the winless Chargers tomorrow.

The Sourav Ganguly-led side have done reasonably well in the tournament so far having won four out of eight matches and occupying the fourth spot at the league table. But their inconsistency has been a reason of concern as they have not been able to build a winning momentum.

After defeating table-toppers Daredevils at their own backyard, the Warriors lost the very next game here against the same opponents as they failed to put up a big total against a team which has a strong batting line-up. Warriors bowlers simply did not know how to bowl at a marauding Virender Sehwag who single-handedly won the match.

The Warriors would need Jesse Ryder and Robin Uthappa, who made 60 against Daredevils, to give them a good start tomorrow, which could be capitalised later on by the likes of Ganguly and Steven Smith.

Experienced duo of paceman Ashish Nehra and spinner Murali Kartik would have to take the responsibility against the desperate Deccan Chargers.

Having lost all their five earlier matches, Deccan managed to get a point in their sixth game against Kolkata Knight Riders after the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy rains last night.

They would be desperately looking to register their first win in the current tournament. But for that they would have to play out of their skins.

The Chargers are well aware that they have a tough task in their remaining 10 games to go beyond the league stage and the former IPL champions would be keen to click against the Warriors tomorrow.

They have failed in virtually all departments of the game with their butter-fingered fielders being the reason of their last few losses.

Defending a paltry 127, the Chargers almost had the match in their hands in their last game against Kolkata till the penultimate over when Anand Rajan dropped Debabrata Das and that enabled KKR to score a last over victory.

It would be important for the openers — skipper Kumar Sangakkara and in-form Shikhar Dhawan — to lay a solid platform for a big total if Chargers are to win tomorrow.

Dhawan scored a valuable half-century in the last game against Kolkata and the team would expect him to continue his good work tomorrow as well.

The Chargers would also be hoping that both Parthiv Patel and Jean-Paul Duminy, who have shone with the bat in a few games, would fire in unison to see the team cross the line this time around.

However, the Chargers’ continuous bowling failure has been a major cause of worry and this time there is little option but to rectify the problem.

Despite South African pacer Dale Steyn’s good show, his spells are yet to produce desired result for the team as none of the bowlers at the other end could complement him.

They can only hope that their bowling department consisting of leg-spinner Amit Mishra, Australian all-rounder Dan Christian, slow left-armer Ankit Sharma, besides Steyn, get their act together before its too late. (PTI)

Teams:

PWI (Probable): Jesse Ryder, Robin Uthappa (wk), Sourav Ganguly (c), Luke Wright, Steven Smith, Manish Pandey, Alfonso Thomas, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Murali Kartik, Rahul Sharma, Ashish Nehra

DC (Probable): Shikhar Dhawan, Parthiv Patel, Kumar Sangakkara (c & wk), Jean-Paul Duminy, Cameron White, Ishank Jaggi, Anand Rajan, Ankit Sharma, Amit Mishra, Dale Steyn, Veer Pratap Singh.
