Kolkata beat Deccan Chargers by 5-wickets in a low scoring tie: IPL 2012

Posted: 22 Apr 2012 01:53 PM PDT

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Kolkata Knight Riders denied Deccan Chargers their maiden win in the tournament as they reach the 127-run target in the final over, inflicting a 5-wicket defeat on the hosts at the Barabati stadium on Sunday.

Earlier, Pacer Dale Steyn trapped Brendon McCullum in front of the wickets to spoil Kolkata’s start after Deccan Chargers set a modest target.

Amit Mishra dealt Kolkata second blow by bowling out Manvinder Bisla to reduce Kolkata to 44/2 in seven overs.

Though skipper Gautam Gambhir kept Kolkata intact with his gritty show, Anand Rajan ended his challenge in the tenth over.

Gambhir scored 30 before being caught behind the stumps with the scorecard reading 64 in 9.5 overs.

Yusuf Pathan, who is struggling with form, smashed a six off Ankit Sharma to get off the mark but failed to carry the momentum and was bowled out by the spinner in the next delivery.

Quick wickets of Gambhir and Pathan brought back Chargers into the game. However, Jacques Kallis stood firm to steer Kolkata near victory.

In the 17 th over, dale Steyn struck to get rid of Kallis with 22 required to win. However, Kolkata didn’t choke in the death overs as Manoj Tiwary along with Debabrata Das guided their side to an impressive win.

Despite a gritty half-ton by Shikhar Dhawan, Chargers lost wickets at regular intervals in slog over and from 81/1, at one stage, they were restricted 126/7 in 20 overs.

Invited to bat, Chargers openers shared a steady 37-run stand for the first wicket before Lakshmipathy Balaji dealt first blow to the hosts by removing skipper Kumar Sangakkara.

Shikhar Dhawan, however, didn’t let the momentum down and propelled the scorecard along with Parthiv Patel.

At the score of 81, Patel got run out while attempting a double which was never possible. Patel made 23 and shared 44-run stand with Dhawan before getting out.

After addition of eight runs to the board, Brett Lee got Cameron White caught by Debabrata Das near boundary line.

Dhawan, however, scored his maiden half-ton of the tournament and helped the side reach 100-mark before falling to pacer Rajat Bhatia.

Dhawan’s dismissal was followed by quick wickets of Ishank Jaggi, Ankit Sharma and Dale Steyn.

Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to bowl against Deccan Chargers before rain delayed start of their IPL clash at the Barabati Stadium on Sunday.
Chargers captain Kumar Sangakkara said he was thinking of batting first anyway. Cameron White replaced Dan Christian in the Chargers squad.

Deccan Chargers are yet to open their account this season and they find themselves at the bottom of the points table after losing all their four matches.

Deccan Chargers vs Kolkata Knight Riders Post Match Presentaton IPL 2012

Lee: The guys have done a tremendous job as far as the bowling is concerned throughout the tournament. We tried to get the nicks with the new ball and then we took the pace off the ball. We fielded brilliantly and did well to restrict them. We need to make sure that we stay nice and fit.

Brett Lee is the Man of the Match

Sangakkara: We had gotten off to a great start. We batted poorly in the last ten overs. KKR fielded brilliantly and backed up well with their batting. Our bowling was spot on, there was that one odd drop catch too.

Gambhir: The wicket wasn’t too good. It was a low wicket, credit to the Deccan Chargers for the way they bowled. Steyn and Co. bowled well. Points on the board is always important and hopefully we’ll find the right combination and move forward.

Gambhir: I think we have been playing some good cricket and some bad cricket as well. Our record should have been four wins out of the last four games. In this format you can’t take any team lightly. We just try to get the right combination. We try and see who can encash on those first 6 overs and we think Brendon can do that well while Kallis gives us stability in the middle order. Cuttack is always a good wicket so we are going to bowl well and chase down the target. We have the same overseas players as last time.

Sangakkara: They have just got to take a hard look at themsevles. They need to take pride in playing for the franchise. I think its strange when we have put on a low score our bowling has been exceptional but we haven’t put together a complete all round performance. We were thinking of batting first anyway. We will make sure we get a good total on the board, as Gambhir said this is a good wicket. Cameron White comes in for Christian

Shaun Marsh leads Kings XI Punjab to 6-wicket win over Mumbai Indians: IPL 2012

Posted: 22 Apr 2012 08:21 AM PDT

Shaun Marsh led the charge for Kings XI Punjab as the visitors defeated Mumbai Indians by 6 wickets with ease in their Indian Premier League match at Mumbai.

Punjab needed 164 to win after Mumbai's James Franklin's impressive innings of 79 from 51 balls.

Openers Nitin Saini and Mandeep Singh started well for Punjab as they put up 48 runs partnership to keep the run-rate in control.

Later on, David Hussey and Shaun Marsh put up a partnership of 58 runs to keep the Punjab team in control of the run chase.

Earlier, Franklin got back to form with a 51-ball-79 to power Mumbai Indians (MI) to a competitive 163 for 6 against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in an Indian Premier League match at Mumbai on Sunday.

The lanky left-hander opened the innings with Sachin Tendulkar (23 in 23 balls) who was playing only his second game of the tournament after being ruled out to due to finger injury.

They put on a half-century stand for the first wicket and then added a quick-fire 75 runs in just 36 balls with Dinesh Karthik (35 in 20 balls) to pave the way for a fighting score.

Franklin, in his 13th game for MI, bettered his previous highest score of 45 not out scored against the Kolkata Knight Riders last season, struck four huge sixes and six fours after a nervous start.

The home team, seeking their fourth win in six games after having lost the earlier one at this venue comprehensively to the Delhi Daredevils, added only 34 runs in the last five overs after having added 71 between overs 11 and 15 when Frankling and Karthik went after the bowling.

MI got off to a sedate start before stepping up the pace in the rest the power play period of six overs to make 39 for no loss.

The first over from Praveen Kumar was a maiden to James Franklin, promoted in the order to accompany Sachin Tendulkar after the flop show by the other combinations tried out in the previous four games. Kumar also beat the tall left-handed batsman five times in six balls.

At the half-way stage of the innings, MI had advanced to 58 for two before Franklin and new batsman Dinesh karthik increased the scoring tempo.

Karthik’s wicket slowed down the scoring rate and MI also lost the big-hitting Kieron Pollard to a catch on the boundary line in a further blow to their hopes of making 170-plus.

Franklin and skipper Harbhajan Singh were dismissed off successive balls by Kumar, the former getting out to a full toss in the penultimate over, to arrest MI’s progress further.

Kumar picked up 2 for 36, while Awana, who got the wickets of Rohit and Pollard, had impressive figures of 2 for 23.

Hussey: Terrific performance. Our fielding set the tone. 164 was par, the bowlers did a great job. The stadium was hot and very loud, the boys wanted to do well. We have a big return game in our home-ground and we have to be ready. Marsh went from strength to strength

Harbhajan: We got the runs on board but the fielding was the difference. If we had fielded like them, we would have won. The wicket was good to bat on, good cricketing wicket. We need to sit and regroup again and make sure that we get runs on the board. Fielding needs to be lifted, hopefully we’ll be fine by the next game.

Marsh: We played really well, at one stage they were looking at 180-190 but we pulled things back. I’ve felt good in the last few innings and it was nice to kick on. It was a great win for us, hopefully we can kick on and do well in the tournament. I was just looking to hit the balls that were in my zone. We have a game in a few days’ time so we need to do well.

Shaun Marsh is the Man of the Match for his 68 off 40 balls.

Ganguly inspires Pune Warriors to victory over Delhi Daredevils: IPL 2012

Posted: 21 Apr 2012 03:07 PM PDT

A superb knock by Jesse Ryder and all-round show from skipper Sourav Ganguly helped Pune Warriors India (PWI) register a comfortable 20-run win over Delhi Daredevils (DD) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2012 match on Saturday. PWI are placed at No 3 position in the Points Table.

Put into bat, Pune scored 192 for three courtesy 86 from Ryder, 41 from Ganguly and a cameo of 34 not out from Steven Smith.

Pune then successfully defended the total, restricting the Daredevils to 172 for seven. Credit should be given to Ganguly who bowled at a critical juncture and ended with impressive figures of two for 27, including the wicket of dangerman Kevin Pietersen.

Seamer Alfonso Thomas, playing his first match, did a fine job with figures of three for 22. This was Pune’s fourth win from seven games.

Delhi skipper Virender Sehwag hit 57 from only 32 balls but once he was out, the chances of victory were as good as gone. The 18th over in the Pune innings bowled by Shahbaz Nadeem that yielded 23 runs turned out to be the game-changing over.

Delhi, however, were in the match till the halfway stage. In the fifth over, India discard Murali Kartik was hit for a six and four by Sehwag.

Pietersen seemed to start from where he had left in the last match against Deccan Chargers as he hit three sixes off Angelo Mathews in the very next over as Daredevils were well and truly off the blocks.

There was no stopping Sehwag as he hit Jesse Ryder for a couple of sixes over extra cover and a four that fetched 18 runs in the eighth over. The fourth six from Sehwag was off Rahul Sharma that was hit straight into the sightscreen. His 50 came off 27 balls.

Sensing danger and with all his bowlers getting a bit of stick, Ganguly brought himself on and his gentle seam-up stuff yielded rich dividends.

First, it was a wicket-to-wicket delivery that cleaned up Pietersen (32, 23 balls, 1×4, 3×6) and in the very next over got Irfan Pathan (15, 11 balls, 1×6), caught at the deep mid-wicket boundary by Ryder.

Kartik then got into the act to remove Sehwag who offered a simple return catch as Pune were back in the match with Daredevils in a spot at 115 for four. Pawan Negi (8) was needlessly run-out.

Earlier, Ryder’s 86 off only 58 balls, along with useful contributions from Ganguly and Smith, helped Warriors post 192 for three. The Ryder-Ganguly second wicket partnership of 93 was the foundation on which Pune scored a commendable total.

Ryder hit seven fours and four sixes in his innings. Not to forget young Smith’s cameo 34 from only 13 deliveries (4×4, 2×6) towards the end helped in beefing up the total.

Smith hit two fours and two sixes in the 18th over from Shahbaz Nadeem (0/44 from 4 overs) that yielded 23 runs.

At the start, the first few scoring shots from Ryder were all mishits but did give him desired results. The first six that he hit off Morne Morkel was over third-man when he wanted to hit over extra-cover.

That was followed by a ‘Chinese-cut’ that went past wicketkeeper to the fine leg fence. The second six was a mistimed hook that went for a six. The first boundary he got off the middle of the bat was boundary over mid-wicket off Morkel.

Ryder continued to play his shots in company of Ganguly, who finally found some form after failing in six consecutive matches.

Pune reached their 50 in the sixth over which was not bad considering they scored their first runs off the ninth ball.

With two left-handers in Ryder and Ganguly, Daredevils skipper Virender Sehwag decided not use his two frontline left-arm spinners and bring himself and Kevin Pietersen to bowl off-breaks.

Sehwag, who was bowling for the first time in IPL was swept for three boundaries — one from Ryder and a couple from Ganguly who slowly got into the groove. In Pietersen’s second over, Ganguly stepped out to hit a six over extra-cover.

Ryder completed his second half century playing only 33 deliveries and a reversal of roles happened suddenly. It was Ganguly who started hitting the spinners.

First, a bowler’s back-drive off Shahbaz Nadeem that threatened to knock umpire’s head-off and then he muscled one through square leg region off Yogesh Nagar to get into the 40s.

Ganguly finally holed out in the long-on region when he failed to get required elevation trying to hit Morkel in the stands. His 41 came off 35 balls with five fours and a six.

However, Ryder and Smith ensured that Pune got to a defendable total. (PTI)

Preview: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Deccan Chargers, IPL 5, 22 April 2012

The bottom-placed Deccan Chargers will continue their quest for an elusive victory when they take on an inconsistent Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League match here tomorrow.

The Chargers, yet to open their account, would draw inspiration from the fact that they had won both their matches in 2010 here at the Barabati Stadium when the venue played host to two out of seven of their home games.

But having lost all four of their matches so far this season, they will have to get their act together against a side high on confidence after defeating Kings XI Punjab comprehensively in their last match.

Although the Knight Riders have only 50 per cent win ratio till now — three victories from six matches so far — the Kolkata outfit certainly starts as favourite tomorrow.

Given the unpredictability factor associated with this format of the game, it would be a folly to rule out any team, but, in the current scenario, the Chargers are in a real spot of bother and it would certainly take a great effort from them to get the better of the Knight Riders.

The only way they can hope to pull it off tomorrow, is by playing out of their skins, and hoping that the luck sides with them.

It would be important for the openers — skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Shikhar Dhawan — to lay a solid platform for a competitive total.

The in-form Dhawan and one-down batsman Parthiv Patel did well in the previous match, scoring quickfire 44 and 45, respectively, and the Chargers would once again hope that the top-order sticks to its job.

Jean-Paul Duminy, who failed in the last game but played a whirlwind knock against Rajasthan Royals, would also look to get back among runs.

However, the Chargers’ continuous bowling failure has been a major cause of worry for them and they would be desperate to rectify the problems when they take the field tomorrow at their lucky venue.

Despite South African pacer Dale Steyn’s good show, his spells are yet to result in the team’s victory as none of the bowlers at the other end could compliment him.

The Chargers can only hope that their bowling department consisting of legspinner Amit Mishra, Aussie allrounder Dan Christian, slow left-armer Ankit Sharma, besides Steyn, will fire in unison.

For the Knight Riders, too much pressure has been put on the top order, including captain Gautam Gambhir and experienced South African campaigner Jacques Kallis and it’s time for others to step up and be counted.

And there could be no better opponents than the Chargers for the likes of Brendon McCullum, Yusuf Pathan, Manoj Tiwary, Manvinder Bisla and Dutch all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate to come back to form.

Kolkata would depend heavily on veteran Australian Brett Lee and West Indies’ Sunil Narine, who has impressed with his performance so far, as far as bowling is concerned.

Laxmipathy Balaji and Rajat Bhatia have also been impressive so far but Yusuf Pathan and Jacques Kallis would be looking to bring his bowling campaign back on track tomorrow.

While it would be interesting to watch if the Chargers are able to break the jinx, the Knight Riders are not expected to spare an inch. (PTI)
