Nasir Jamshed, Junaid Khan seal six wickets win over India in 1st ODI #IndvsPak

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 05:42 AM PST

Nasir Jamshed, Junaid Khan seal six wickets win over India in 1st ODIIndian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s heroic unbeaten century under pressure went in vain as arch rivals Pakistan held their nerve to clinch the first one-day international with a comfortable six-wicket victory in a low-scoring contest on Sunday.

Scorecard | Highlights India vs Pakistan 1st ODI

India posted 227 for six after recovering from a precarious 29 for five one stage but that turned out to be insufficient for the Pakistanis who rode on Nasir Jamshed’s unbeaten century to overhaul the target with 11 balls to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Dhoni played a captain’s knock with an unbeaten 113, his 8th ODI century, to script a brilliant Indian recovery after left-arm pacer Junaid Khan (4/43) exploited the overcast conditions to rip through the top-order and leave the hosts gasping for breath within the first 10 overs.

The Indian captain found an able ally in Suresh Raina (43) first and then Ravichandran Ashwin (31 not out) to take the score beyond the 200-run mark which looked doubtful at one stage following the top-order collapse.

Dhoni and Ashwin put on a record seventh wicket partnership of 121 runs but the Indian captain’s superlative knock off 125 balls lost much of its value as the Pakistani batsmen went about the task of chasing down the target without taking too many risks.

Younis Khan (58) and Shoaib Malik (34 not out) were the other notable performers for Pakistan.

The Pakistani innings started on a disastrous note as ODI debutant Bhuvneshwar Kumar produced a beauty to get rid of Mohammed Hafeez with the very first delivery of the Pakistan innings.

The ball came back sharply after pitching as Hafeez didn’t offer a stroke only to find his off-stump knocked back.

The youngster got rid of Azhar Ali a few overs later to reduce the visitors to 21 for two. But the experienced Younis Khan and Nasir steadied the Pakistan innings with a solid 112-run third wicket partnership.

Both Jamshed and Younis benefitted due to some horrendous decisions given by the Indian umpire S Ravi. Jamshed was lucky to get a reprieve on 24 when an inside edge was caught by Virender Sehwag in first slip off Ashwin but Ravi turned down the appeal.

Ravi also negated a plumb leg before decision against Younis when the right-hander missed a delivery from Ashwin in his bid to play the sweep shot.

Younis returned to the pavilion when Ashwin latched on to a low catch off Ashok Dinda, a decision which was referred to the TV umpire by on-field umpire Billy Bowden. But by that time, the visitors were already in a good position and just needed to bat sensibly to reach the target.

Jamshed, who grew in confidence as the innings wore on, was dropped by Yuvraj Singh when on 68 off Dinda much to the disappointment of a sizeable holiday crowd at the Chepauk.

Just when Pakistan seemed to be cruising along comfortably, Ishant Sharma enlivened the proceedings to some extent by getting rid of captain Misbah-ul-Haq (16) with a slower ball which knocked down the off stump.

It was Malik, who hit the winning runs with a pull towards deep mid-wicket boundary off the first ball of the penultimate over.

Earlier, put into bat, India plunged into trouble straightaway with Gautam Gambhir (8), Virender Sehwag (4), Virat Kohli (0), Yuvraj Singh (2) and Rohit Sharma (4) returning to the pavilion in quick succession as Junaid got the ball to swing under overcast conditions.

The Pakistani pacers took advantage of the moisture on the track and troubled the top-order batsmen with the new ball. Once the ball got a little older, Dhoni and Raina applied themselves and started rebuilding the Indian innings.

The two teams will now travel to Kolkata for the second ODI to be held on January 3 while the third and final match will be staged at the Ferozeshah stadium in New Delhi on January 6.

Pacer Junaid had justified his captain Misbah-ul-Haq’s decision to bowl first in damp conditions with struggling opener Sehwag becoming Junaid’s first victim.

The Delhi batsman, considered a game-changer for his ability to take the attack to the opposition, swung it Pakistan’s way after slogging for 11 balls to get four runs.

Sehwag was castled by a Junaid delivery that came in a shade after pitching.

The big four of the Indian batting order were all bowled, three of them by Junaid, who seemed unplayable getting the ball to move appreciably both in the air and off the pitch.

The proverbial promising batsman of the side, Rohit added another one to his growing list of failures, becoming Junaid’s fourth victim after scratching around for 14 deliveries for his four runs.

Rohit’s last six ODI innings now read a disappointing 4, 4, 4, 0, 0 and 5. In fact, the top five managed to pull off just two fours for the team.

At 29/5 in a little less than 10 overs, India were staring firmly down the barrel before Raina and Dhoni came together to repair the innings slowly and steadily.

The duo cautiously added 73 runs for the sixth wicket and defied Pakistani bowlers for a good 23 overs.

Dhoni got a life on 16 when in the 26th over rival skipper Misbah-ul Haq dropped him at midwicket of Mohammed Hafeez’s bowling and the Indian, who smashed seven fours and three sixes, made it count.

Dhoni was suffering from dehydration and also battled cramps towards the end of India innings.

Meanwhile, Raina’s patient innings came to an end when he lost his leg stump to Hafeez. But Dhoni was unfazed and, in fact, accelerated from that point, reaching his fifty with a whip over midwicket boundary off Umar Gul.

For a man not exactly known for solid technique, Dhoni was the lone Indian batsman to smash spin ace Saeed Ajmal for a six. A new ball had to be sought to replace the one which went out of the ground.

He also brought up his hundred in style, hoicking Irfan over cover in the 49th over, which produced 21 runs with Dhoni doing most of the scoring. For Pakistan, Junaid was the most successful bowler, grabbing 4/43 in his nine overs.

This was the first match played under the new ICC rules. Under these rules, one new ball was used at each end, bowlers were allowed two bouncers an over, there was no batting Power Play, the bowling Power Play was completed before the 40th over, and at no stage in the innings more than four fielders were allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

MS Dhoni: ‘I think I’ll have a hot shower. It was a long day. Quite satsified with my batting but it was a bad toss to lose. I think there was something for the fast bowlers. They pitched it in the right areas. I think that’s where we lost the plot. It was about getting to a respectable score. We had only Ashwin after us, me and Raina. We delayed the slog a bit. I think 227 was good from where we started but it was not enough. Overall I think we did not have enough runs on the board.’

The Man of the Match is MS Dhoni despite his hundred in a losing cause.

Misbah ul Haq: ‘It was a really good toss to win. The spell of Junaid Khan was excellent. We knew he was capable of doing it. He did it in the Test against Sri Lanka at Pallekele. It was good that they were pitching the balls in the right area. I think there was some change in the nature of the pitch. All credit to MS. He batted superbly and almost single-handedly took the game away but Jamshed batted well to finish it. He finished the game. That is really good to see. Both the teams were struggling with the humidity. From both teams the fast bowlers should get credit.’

After the exciting T20 series game now shifts to 50-50 overs games. India came back strongly in the last T20 to level series. Pakistan have been superb on the series. They have bolwed and batted beautifully so far. Misbah-ul-Haq, ODI skipper for Pakistan will be looking for the same intensity in the ODIs as well. Pakistan have a lot of changes in the ODI squad both in batting and bowling. Shoaib Akhtar and Mohmmad Irfan were retained for ODIs after there superb show in T20s. For India, Virender Sehwag will return to the squad and it will interesting who will open now for India. Ajinkya Rahande gave India a good start in T20s but will he be retained. The same question will be for Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. In bowling department India is expected to bring Amit Mishra in the squad with Chennai pitch assisting the spinner. The only downsite in the first ODI wil be weather. Its been raining for past two days in Chennai and rain has been predicted for tomorrow as well. We hope to see the game even if its a 20 overs a side rather than a wash out. Watch the highlights India-Pakistan 1st ODI game below:

1st ODI : Pakistan wins toss, elects to field vs India – Chennai 2012 #IndvsPak

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 08:08 PM PST

Toss: Pakistan have won the toss and elected to field

Misbah: ‘From the last two days it has been raining and the covers have been on, so we want to utilise the moisture underneath. We are satisfied with the players we have. Our goal is to play good cricket and the team showed it in the T20I series. Azhar Ali, Younis Khan are back. Umar Akmal misses out, so does Sohail Tanvir – Junaid replaces him.’

Dhoni: ‘Definitely there will be something for the fast bowlers, we were looking to field first. The game is changing, we are playing with new ruls and the format is very demanding. We haven’t got a clue what a good score is. One thing is to keep wickets in hand as we have explosive players later on who can capitalise. Sehwag replaces Rahane – that’s the only change from the T20I team.’

Pitch report: There was rain yesterday so there will be moisture on it. Little more grass than normal on the wicket. ‘I have played in Chennai and have never seen grass like this before’, says Wasim Akram. The batting side have to see off the early period to get runs on this pitch. Fielding first is the way to go according to Ravi Shastri.

Teams:
Pakistan (Playing XI): Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal(w), Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan

India (Playing XI): Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Ishant Sharma

New ODI cricket rules for DRS, Over rates, No-balls, Deadballs, Powerplays and bouncers

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 08:06 PM PST

General Rules
DRS (Test and ODIs)
An amendment has been made to the LBW protocols. The margin of uncertainty applicable to the point of impact with the pad has been increased so that it is the same as provided for determining the projected point of impact with the stumps. For example, if the centre of the ball is shown to be impacting in line within an area demarcated by a line drawn down the middle of the outer stumps (and the bottom of the bails), then the decision will always be out.
If the whole of the ball is shown to be impacting outside the line of the stumps, then the decision will always be not out. If there is anything in between, the original on-field decision will stand.
No-balls (All formats)
After every dismissal that is not permitted off a no-ball, and subject to the availability of technology, the third umpire will check for a foot fault and advise the on-field umpire accordingly over a two-way radio.
Dead ball (All formats)
The playing conditions have been altered to include the use of the Spydercam, a camera that moves over the field on suspended cables, by broadcasters. If the ball, while in play, is hit by the batsman onto the camera or its cables, it will be called a dead ball.
Over-rates (All formats)
The allowances given to the fielding team because of time wasting by the batting team will be deducted from the allowances granted to the batting team in the determination of its over-rate.
Only for ODIs...
Powerplays and fielding restrictions
There will be only two blocks of Powerplay overs, instead of three. For uninterrupted innings, the first block will be during the first ten overs and only two fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle. The second block, comprising five overs, will be taken by the batting side and must be completed by the 40th over. Only three fielders will be allowed outside the circle during the second Powerplay.
During non-Powerplay overs, a maximum of four fielders can be placed outside the circle, a reduction from the earlier five.
Short-pitched deliveries
Law 42.6 (a) has been amended to allow the bowler a maximum of two short-pitched deliveries per over in an ODI.

Pakistan is a more balanced team : MS Dhoni #IndvsPak

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 11:20 AM PST

Pakistan is a more balanced team MS DhoniIndia skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni rates the visiting Pakistani side, especially its bowling, quite high but feels the side which remains more consistent has better chances to do well in the One-day series, beginning here on Sunday.

“Overall, Pakistan is a very good team. Its combination is such that they have specialist bowlers and have five bowlers for a match. In a way I feel they have complete bowling attack and they have experienced batsmen who can bat well in any conditions. Specialist spinners are also performing well,” Dhoni said at the pre-match press conference, here.

“When it is compared to Indian team it is a very balanced side with talented players. Overall, which ever the team bats and bowls well for a long period of time will turn out to be well,” Dhoni added.

On Sunday the first ODI match will be played by India post Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement and Dhoni said his immense experience will be missed but youngsters will get a chance to showcase their talent.

“If you look at the last one year or so, he has been picking and choosing ODI matches to play. Yes, We are missing him a lot. He has such experience and he always leaves a solid impact on the minds of the youngsters in the team in the dressing room. We all miss that. Also, when we look at important series afresh, youngsters need to get chances and perform well,” he said.

Dhoni also made it clear that he is not a big fan of the new rules brought in the One-day format.

“I am not very happy with the rules. I feel that lot of changes in ODI has been brought in when lot of people talk about Test cricket and experiments made in T20,” he said. Asked for comment on the new rule that two bouncers could be bowled in a over, he said,” Once we get fast bowlers like Umesh Yadav we will try to use it. As of now we will keep that in our pocket.”

Talking about the media criticism after the Bangalore T20 defeat, Dhoni said, “It is not in our control. It is important that we attend to our job as to what we need to do on field.”

However, he backed his bowlers, when India’s bowling has been considered weak link.

“We have few young bowlers and it is difficult for them to bowl in dew factors and adapt to the changes in rules of the game. All these are to be taken in to account and we will have to back them as at the end of the day they are the ones you see in the future games.”

He said young bowlers such as Parvinder Awana and Bhuvanesh Kumar needed a few more chances before being judged.

“We will have to give them fare amount of chances and see what set of talents that they have got and it will happen once they play few games at international levels. Domestic is quite different from international standards. They require more exposure and spend more time at the top level.”

Asked about Pakistan’s new pace sensation, Mohammad Irfan, he said, “He is a bit different. You can say that he is about one foot different to some of our bowlers. He gets lot of bounce and bowls at decent pace. We have to watch out for him. We have not seen much of him.”

Dhoni also paid tribute to former English cricketer Tony Grieg, who passed away on Saturday fighting lung cancer.

“I did not have much chance to interact with him. I always used to hear to his comments right from the time I started following cricket, not to forget the instances when Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. He always used to make us feel as if we are watching the matches live at the stadium. He was really exciting. We’ll all miss him and that is for sure.

A strong come back for India in the last T20 match with batsman scoring runs and bowlers picking up wickets under pressure. The momentum is with team India and will definitely carry forward in the ODI series that begins from Chennai on 30 Dec 2012. India wouldn’t be making too much changes except that Virender Sehwag will join the team along with a specialist spinner in place of batsman. The pitch at Cheapuk stadium will assist spinners and India will definitely look to get the best out of the conditions. India could reach the no. 1 ODI rankings spot as well if they win the 1st ODI and if they clean sweep series 3-0 then will retain the position as well.

For Pakistan they have completely revamped the ODI team with Misbah-ul-Haq leading the team. Imran Farhat, Azhar Ali begin the top order of the team with Mohammad Hafeez, Younis Khan and skipper himself strengthening the middle order. Pakistan has also retained Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Irfan considering their splendid performance in the T20s. With nine of the 14 matches at Chepauk having been won by sides which batted first after winning the toss, both teams will hope to make good use of the pitch by posting a stiff total for the opposition. But weather may play spoilsport as rain is predicted on Sunday. Both the teams also cancelled their practice sessions on Saturday.

Preview: India vs Pakistan, 1st ODI, Chennai, 2012 #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Honours shared in the T20 series, arch foes India and Pakistan are now set for what is likely to be an exhilarating three-match ODI series showdown but weather gods could prove to be the dampener in the opening clash on Sunday.

If the Twenty20 matches were any indication, the ODI series is bound to leave the fans asking for more but the only concern is the rain that has lashed the city and is not expected to relent even on Sunday.

Preview India vs Pakistan, 1st ODI, Chennai, 2012

It has been raining in the city since Saturday night and the met office has predicted light to heavy showers for Sunday, which raises the possibility of the day match being called off without even a ball being bowled.

But if the weather gods do smile, the two teams could set the temperatures soaring given that their key players seem to be in good form.

For India, the biggest positive to emerge from the two Twenty20 games gone by was Yuvraj Singh’s fantastic form.

The left-hander was nothing short of inspiring with the bat smashing a 36-ball 72, which included seven sixes, in the second T20 and is set to be back in the ODI fold after the Player of the Tournament-winning show in the 2011 World Cup.

But the top-order would be a concern given that both the openers — Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir — have not been in the best of touch in the recent past. Both of them struggled immensely in the demoralising Test series defeat to England.

Virat Kohli, at number three, has also not been in form to an extent and these three would have to get their act together for India to be dominant in the batting department.

In the middle-order, it could be a toss up between Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma while Yuvraj and Suresh Raina are expected to make the rest of the batting line-up.

On the bowling front, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made a dream T20 debut by grabbing 3/9, could be handed an ODI cap as well for his impressive show in the shortest format.

After a decent outing in the T20s, Ishant Sharma would be leading the pace attack with Ashok Dinda and Bhuvneshwar as his likely partners.

The spin department would be spearheaded by local star R Ashwin in all likelihood, even though he has been far from impressive of late.

For Pakistan, it would be a change of leaders as Misbah-ul-Haq would be captaining the ODI side.

The temperamental side, which is exceptional one day and ordinary the other, also has solid performers in the line-up and should prove quite a handful for the hosts.

The openers — Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed — have settled down nicely into their roles. Hafeez, in fact, has been calmness personified in a mercurial team, as was evident from his Man of the Series-winning performance in the T20s against the arch-rivals.

Old warhorse Younis Khan would lend the much-required stability, while the Akmal brother –Umar and Kamran — will provide the spark in a strong middle-order.

Pakistan have the clear edge over India as far as bowling is concerned with Umar Gul being the most potent pacer. Saeed Ajmal’s spin has always troubled the Indians even though the hosts did take him to task in the second T20.

With not much separating the two teams, it promises to be an exhilarating contest but the result could well be decided by the weather gods given the continuing rain in the city.

Teams (from):

India: MS Dhoni (Capt.), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Amit Mishra.

Pakistan: Misbah-ul-Haq (Capt.), Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Haris Sohail, Kamran Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan, Umar Gul, Imran Farhat, Umar Akmal, Anwar Ali, Zulfiqar Babar.

India aim to achieve no. 1 spot in ICC ODI rankings #IndvsPak

Posted: 29 Dec 2012 12:30 AM PST

India aim to achieve no. 1 spot in ICC ODI rankingsIndia will aim to achieve the number one position in the ICC ODI championship table for the first time ever when they square off against Pakistan in a three-match series, commencing in Chennai on December 30.

ICC World Cup 2011 champions, India are ranked third on the table with 120 ratings points, just a rating point behind current No. 1 England and South Africa in second place.

England are fraction of a point ahead of South Africa. If India manage to win the first one-dayer against Pakistan, they will climb to the top of the table with 121 ratings points, which would put them ahead of both England and South Africa by a fraction of a point.

If India, which have only achieved a ranking as high as number two so far in the ODI championship table, win all three matches in the series, they will become the leaders at 123 ratings points, two points ahead of England and South Africa.

But if India lose even one of their three games against Pakistan, they would remain at the third spot.

Pakistan, currently ranked sixth, on the other hand can hope to move up a spot to fifth if they win all three matches against India, gaining six ratings points to move to 110.

Michael Hussey to retire from international cricket post Sydney Test vs Sri LankaThis Australian summer will see another big retirement in the world of cricket as Australia batsman Michael Hussey confirms he will put his feet up by the end of this season.

“Mike Hussey will retire from international cricket this summer. What is your favourite memory from “Mr Cricket’s” career? #mrcricket,” Cricket Australia said on Saturday on the microblogging website Twitter.

Australia coach Mickey Arthur, however, expressed his surprise at Hussey’s decision. “Was shocked when Huss told me of his decision-he will retire a champion,” he tweeted.

Former England skipper and commentator Tony Greig passes awayFormer England captain and celebrated television commentator Tony Greig passed away after losing his battle with lung cancer on Saturday.

Greig was 66. He breathed his last at a Sydney hospital after being brought in a “critical condition”.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer in October this year after undergoing treatment for what was initially thought to be bronchitis in May.

He underwent tests after the World Twenty20 Championships in Sri Lanka and it was revealed that there was a small lesion at the base of his right lung.

“On his return to Australia he had fluid removed from the right lung and testing revealed he had lung cancer,” the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ reported.

Greig’s son Mark told a newspaper that his father’s cancer had progressed to “stage four”.

While commentating during the coverage of the first Australia-South Africa in November, Greig spoke about the disease.

“It’s not good. The truth is I’ve got lung cancer. Now it’s a case of what they can do,” Greig had said.

Born in Queenstown, South Africa, Greig qualified to play for England due to his Scottish parentage. His father was a Scot.

In his 58-match Test career, Greig scored 3,599 runs and picked up 141 wickets. In 22 ODIs that he played, Greig scored 269 runs and managed 19 wickets.

Greig was a leading international all-rounder for England.

Considered a controversial figure, he helped Kerry Packer start the World Series Cricket by signing up many English as well as some West Indian and Pakistani cricketers.

The move ended up costing him England’s captaincy. The best performance of Greig’s captaincy career came in 1976-77, when England toured India for a five-Test series.

The team had not won there for 15 years but went on to score one of their most convincing triumphs when they clinched the first three Tests by huge margins.

Greig turned into a successful commentator following the end of his playing career in 1977 and was forthright with his views. He was one of the bitterest critics of BCCI’s opposition to the Decision Review System.

Die Malediven – Das Pardies auf Erden

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 08:32 PM PST

Yuvraj big hits made all the difference: MS Dhoni #IndvsPak

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 11:08 AM PST

Yuvraj big hits made all the difference MS DhoniYuvraj Singh’s big hits at the death overs helped India score 10 runs in excess of what would have been expected, feels skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni after the hosts registered a nerve-wracking 11-run win over Pakistan in the second T20 international on Friday.

“Yuvi was at his best, those big sixes and fours really helped us in the end. We got 10 runs more than what we would have been happy with,” said Dhoni at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Yuvraj creamed three sixes off Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal in the 19th over, which helped India post a competitive 192 for five.

Dhoni praised his bowlers for finding their mojo just in the nick of time to restrict the arch-rivals to 181 for seven.

“A lot depends on the youngsters bowling the last overs, I think they held their nerve nicely. They were feeling the pressure but they responded really well and executed the yorkers. When they wanted to bowl slower ones they did that,” he said.

Dhoni said Gautam Gambhir and Ajinkya Rahane laid a solid platform for the rest of the Indian batsmen with their 44-run opening stand.

“While batting we got off to a very good start from Gautam and Jinks. Overall it was a good competition between the two sides,” he added.

Dhoni’s counterpart, Mohammad Hafeez blamed his bowlers for not following the basics right.

“When we were bowling, we didn’t follow the basics, we bowled short of length,” he said.

Hafeez, who was adjudged the man-of-the-series, admitted that the 97-run partnership between Yuvraj and Dhoni made all the difference.

The Pakistani skipper said the batsmen should have scored more runs in the 7-10 overs while chasing the target.

“In the first six overs, we played very well but in the seventh-tenth over we didn’t score as much as we should have. We wanted Umar Akmal to have more time in the middle but overall it was a good game.”

Man-of-the-match Yuvraj Singh said today’s knock came as a sigh of relief for him as he was finding it difficult to middle the ball in the nets a day before the game.

“Yesterday, I was batting in the nets and I couldn’t middle a single ball, so I was trying to spend time in the middle there,” he said.

Yuvraj said had Dhoni and he stayed at the crease till the end, India would have ended breaching the 200-mark barrier.

“We thought 160-170 was a good total but if MS and me stayed till the end we knew we could score more,” he said.

Yuvraj Singh, Ashok Dinda level T20 series for India against Pakistan #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 07:27 AM PST

Yuvraj Singh, Ashok Dinda level T20 series for India against PakistanYuvraj Singh’s career-best T20 knock and Dinda’s late fightback helped India clinch a thrilling 11-run victory over Pakistan to level the two-match Twenty20 series.

Scorecard | India vs Pakistan 2nd T20 Highlights

Defending 192, India held the nerve in the end as Dinda removed Mohammad Hafeez and Kamran Akmal in one over to restrict Pakistan to 181/7 in 20 overs at Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad.

Skipper Hafeez led Pakistan chase from the front as he smashed 23-ball fifty, smacking five fours and three sixes. Dinda ended Hafeez’s scintillating 55-run knock to bring India back into the match.

India got a huge breakthrough when pacer Dinda dismissed Umar Akmal to break 62-run third wicket stand between Hafeez and the former.

Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuvraj Singh removed Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shehzad respectively to give Pakistan double jolt in quick succession.

Jamshed and Shehzad started off well, adding 74-run stand for the first wicket to lay the foundation for Pakistan.

Earlier, Yuvraj’s career-best T20 knock could not have come at a more opportune time as it lifted India to a defendable total after being pegged back by three quick strikes.

Ever since Yuvraj arrived on the wicket, Pakistani bowlers bled runs as the left-hander plundered seven huge sixes and four boundaries in his 36-ball blitzkrieg to entertain a jam-packed house.

With skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (33) he added 97-runs for the fourth wicket as India put on board its highest total against Pakistan in T20s.

Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal bore the brunt of Yuvraj’s fury as the Indian creamed four sixes off him with three coming in a row in the 19th over, which yielded India 22 runs.

Yuvraj was out in the last over off paceman Umar Gul, who was the most succesful bowler for Pakistan with four wickets at the expense of just 37 runs.

Earlier, India openers provided a fiery start, adding 44 runs inside five overs, but neither Gautam Gambhir (21) nor Ajinkya Rahane (28) could build on that.

The two openers were in good touch, driving and cutting elegantly. Rahane found boundries on the off-side despite facing a packed off-side field and also flicked confidently.

Gambhir was in much better form than Bangalore and his drives off Sohail Tanvir was a treat to watch but Gul removed both of them in space of two overs.

Gambhir departed after hitting Gul for three consecutive boundaries as he was foxed by a slower one. Gul returned and effected Rahane’s dismissal with a catch in his follow through when the diminutive batsman miscued a pull shot.

Young fast bowler Mohammad Irfan was again impressive as he welcomed Yuvraj with a toe-crushing yorker.

The two quick wickets pegged India back, free-flowing runs stopped and pressure was on Yuvraj and Virat Kohli to wriggle the side out of the tight situation.

Kohli (27) too departed after getting his eye in when a confusion between him and Yuvraj resulted in his run out.

Dhoni arrived and meant business straight away, dispatching one from Shahid Afridi with a lofted drive to the fence. Yuvraj too started the fireworks, hitting a massive six off Afridi over mid-wicket to bring up India’s 100 as India reeled off 17 runs in the 13th over.

Ajmal too got the same treatment by Yuvraj as one of his deliveries vanished in the crowd. Dhoni and Yuvraj continued in the same vein till the end and ensured the India have enough runs on the board to defend.

Dhoni: ‘A lot depends on the youngster or the bowler who is bowling the last over and they held their nerve nicely. The youngsters were feeling the pressure but executed their yorkers and the slower ones when the field was set for it. First of all we don’t know whether there will be dew or not on this so one does not know what is a good score. The good thing was Yuvi getting those sixes and fours. The last venue we had the wicket supporting the bowlers and you come here and it is a flat wicket but that’s what the format is all about.’

Hafeez: ‘The boys really worked hard to win the series, but during the 2nd stage of the innings we didn’t follow the basics. The partnership between MS and Yuvraj was the difference. The 7th to 10th over we didn’t bat well and we couldn’t finish it off, but still a good game of T20 Cricket. The crowd was exceptionally good and really enjoyed playing here today.’

Hafeez is the Man of the Series for his back to back fifties.

Yuvraj Singh: ‘Yesterday I was batting in the nets and I couldn’t hit a single ball out of the ground and it was disappointing. But today I did. The yorker from Irfan reminded me of Wasim Akram. Tried to bat through and was hitting the ball well late on. If me and MS always have a partnership and we got a really good score and that helped us win the game. Enjoyed the support over here and hopefully come back and play here. India Pakistan is amazing, we always have had great matches against them and there’s lot of passion when both countries play.’

Yuvraj Singh is the Man of the Match for his 36 ball 72.

New Zealand announce 15 member ODI squad for South Africa tour #NZvsSA

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 12:27 AM PST

New Zealand announce 15 member ODI squad for South Africa seriesNew Zealand Cricket (NZC) today announced a 15-player One Day International squad for the tour of South Africa.

The squad includes eleven players who featured in the recent Twenty20 series against South Africa together with BJ Watling, Adam Milne, Kane Williamson and Kyle Mills.

National Selection Manager, Kim Littlejohn, said: "We believe we've selected a strong squad with a good blend of experienced performers and some very talented younger players who can play high quality limited overs cricket

"We're keen to show consistency in selection for our short-form side and retain the nucleus of the squad who competed in the T20 series along with four players from the last ODI series against Sri Lanka.

"There is healthy competition for places in our starting line-up at present and we are working on developing a larger group of players who can compete at international level."

BLACKCAPS Coach, Mike Hesson, said: "Uncapped players Corey Anderson, Ronnie Hira, Mitchell McClenaghan, Colin Munro and Jimmy Neesham get their chance after excelling in domestic cricket and showing plenty of promise during the recent T20 series.

"They have all had valuable experiences playing against strong opposition and are maturing all the time as cricketers.

"We are confident these young players, in combination with our established senior players, will be highly competitive against South Africa.

"The decision to leave Doug Bracewell out of the ODI squad is in-line with our policy to sensibly manage player workloads. He has a big role to play in the Test series against South Africa and will benefit from the opportunity to freshen up ahead of the home series against England."

Andrew Ellis and Tim Southee were not considered due to injury.

New Zealand Squad: Brendon McCullum (c), Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Roneel Hira, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Rob Nicol, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson

India-Australia 3rd Test shifted from Kanpur to Hyderabad #IndvsAus

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 11:33 PM PST

India-Australia 3rd Test shifted from Kanpur to HyderabadThe BCCI on Friday shifted the third match of the upcoming India-Australia Test series from Kanpur to Hyderabad, citing construction work at the original venue which was criticised for being under-prepared by a Cricket Australia inspection team.

“The Tour, Programme and Fixtures Committee of the BCCI has decided to shift the third Test of the forthcoming AIRTEL Test series between India and Australia from the Green Park, Kanpur to the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad. This change is as per the rotation policy of the Board,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale said in a statement.

“The change was necessitated because the ongoing construction activity at the Green Park, Kanpur, would not have been completed in time for the Test,” it added.

The BCCI’s decision came after a Cricket Australia inspection team expressed dissatisfaction with Green Park’s facilities.

“Neither the ACA or Cricket Australia is keen on playing in Kanpur. We’ve made that known to the BCCI (Indian board) but we haven’t received a definitive response yet,” the Australian Cricketers’ Association chief Paul Marsh had stated.

“The change-room facilities are not up to international standard and there are various issues with the outfield and the pitch. The main thing is there are certain facilities they haven’t got that we would expect to be in place for international cricket,” he added.

India will take on Australia in a four-match Test series, and the other three matches will be played in New Delhi, Mohali and Chennai.

The revised match-schedule is as follows:

First Test — Delhi (February 22 to 26)

Second Test — Mohali (March 2 to 6)

Third Test — Hyderabad (March 14 to 18)

Fourth Test — Chennai (March 22 to 26).

Sri Lanka, trailing by 304 runs on the first innings, surrendered for just 103 for seven off 24.2 overs with Kumar Sangakkara retiring hurt and Prasanna Jayawardene and Chanaka Welegedara unable to bat because of injuries.

Paceman Mitchell Johnson was the dominant player with six wickets and an unbeaten 92 to be named man-of-the-match.

Sri Lanka somehow have to regroup amid their casualty ward of injured players for the third and final dead rubber Test starting in Sydney next Thursday.

Their remote hopes went out the door when star batsman Sangakkara retired on 27 after he was struck on the glove by a menacing lifter from Johnson.

Sangakkara immediately sought treatment from the physio and left the ground with noticeable swelling around his left index finger, indicating a possible fracture.

He was the second Sri Lankan player to suffer a hand injury in the Boxing Day Test with wicketkeeper Jayawardene receiving a hairline thumb fracture when also struck by Johnson in the first innings.

With paceman Chanaka Welegedara already ruled out of further involvement in the Melbourne Test with a hamstring injury, the Sri Lankan second innings ended at seven wickets down to complete a wretched Test for the tourists.

Facing a 304-run innings deficit after the Australians were dismissed for 460 with Johnson left stranded on 92, Sri Lanka virtually hoisted the white flag with the loss of four wickets in the first six overs.

Sangakkara, one of two 10,000-Test run-getters in the Sri Lankan batting lineup, was the last remaining hope along with vice-captain Angelo Mathews at lunch.

But it all unravelled in the middle session with Sangakkara’s unfortunate exit and Mathews chopping the firebreathing Johnson on to his stumps for 35.

Dhammika Prasad clubbed spinner Nathan Lyon for successive sixes and went after a third before miscuing up in the air for an easy catch to Phil Hughes for 17.

Shaminda Eranga was last man out, caught close in by Ed Cowan off Peter Siddle for a duck and the misery was all over for Sri Lanka.

The tourists had a dreadful start with four wickets tumbling in the first six overs, including out-of-form skipper Mahela Jayawardene for a duck.

Opener Dimuth Karunaratne hesitated going for a second run off the third ball of the innings and David Warner pounced, with Johnson knocking down the stumps at the bowler’s end and the Sri Lankan opener well short of his ground.

Fellow opener Tillakaratne Dilshan went next ball, spooning a rising Johnson delivery off his hip to Cowan at bat-pad for a duck leaving Sri Lanka at two for one.

Jayawardene, who has struggled for runs away from home in the last three years, lasted just six balls before he edged Jackson Bird on to his stumps in the second over of the innings.

Jayawardene, one of only 11 players to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket, has now gone 26 innings in away Tests without making a half-century.

Thilan Samaraweera was next to go leg before wicket to Bird for one as the tourists lurched to 13 for four in the sixth over.

Earlier, Australia lasted just 5.4 overs before they were all out for 460 in their first innings.

Johnson was left stranded short of his second Test century on 92 not out off 150 balls.
