MS Dhoni praises Yuvraj Singh after India crush England in 1st T20 #IndvsEng

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 11:10 AM PST

MS Dhoni praises Yuvraj Singh after India crush England in 1st T20India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he was worried when England were cruising at one stage and lauded his bowlers, especially Yuvraj Singh for turning the tide for them in the first Twenty20 match.

England were off to a flying start, reaching 76 in just eight overs.

“The pressure was on the bowlers and it was important from the eighth over onwards that we were on top. Yuvraj was brilliant. I thought he bowled really well at the right time. I was a bit worried because they got off to a flying start but Ashwin bowled well in the first three overs,” Dhoni said after India won the match by five wickets.

Yuvraj took three wickets and conceded just 19 runs in his four-over quota.

Dhoni said Yuvraj kept his cool under presssure and the win was morale boosting after crushing Test series defeat.

“Every bowler apart from Yuvraj bowled one bad over but overall it was a good performance. In the shorter formats, we have done quite well and it builds the confidence,” he said.

England skipper Eoin Morgan said that not putting enough runs on the board hurt them badly.

“We lacked some discipline with the batting, Alex Hales did well but we lacked about 15-20 runs. We never seemed to get going, we lost wickets. We didn’t get the early wickets but we always though we were in the game, and it’s tough defending that score,” Morgan said.

The visiting captain was confident that his side will regroup and comeback.

“We’re a young side and we’ve shown a lot of promise, we’ll have to pick ourselves up.”

Yuvraj, adjudged man of the match, said batting with straight bat helped him.

“When it comes to T20 I like to express myself. I try to hit everything straight and see how it goes,” the left-hander said.

“Chasing was a good idea because of the dew and the ball comes on later in the day. I just need to keep playing, keep hitting the ball straight. I want to play as much as possible, train harder, work harder,” he added.

Asked about his bowling success, Yuvraj said, “I tried to bowl a bit slow, I thought that might help, tried not to give any loose balls.”

Yuvraj Singh all round effort helps India beat England in 1st T20Yuvraj Singh produced a brilliant all-round display as India finally brought about some cheer for their fans with a comfortable five-wicket victory over England in the first Twenty20 International on Thursday.

Scorecard | India vs England 1st T20 Highlights

Yuvraj took three for 19 from his four overs to restrict England to a manageable 157 for six and then blasted 38 off 21 balls to set up an easy chase as the home team reached the target with 13 balls to spare.

After the humiliation in the Test series, Indian team saw a change in fortune in the shortest format to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

The turning point during India’s chase was the eighth over when Yuvraj launched into inexperienced left-arm spinner Danny Briggs hitting him for 18 runs which included two huge sixes over the deep mid-wicket region and a boundary.

Yuvraj also got another six in the 10th over bowled by Luke Wright before being dismissed trying to hit a fourth six.

Such was the impact of Yuvraj’s innings, the other Indian batsmen didn’t need to do anything special in order to reach the target. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina chipped in with useful contributions of 24 not out and 26 respectively. Dhoni hit Stuart Meaker for successive boundaries and then took a double to finish with flourish.

Credit should also be given to openers Gautam Gambhir and Ajinkya Rahane as they helped the hosts race to 41 within the first four overs taking full advantage of the Powerplay.

While Gambhir hit three boundaries in his 16 while Rahane hit two sixes in his 19. Although they didn’t score many but they set the momentum.

The second and final T20 International will be played on Saturday.

Gambhir and Rahane’s dismissals for the addition of three runs in four balls left India at a shaky 44 for 2 and they were 52 for 2 at the end of six overs of Powerplay.

Earlier put in to bat, England made a blazing start with opener Alex Hales making a whirlwind 56 in 35 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes.

He waded into the Indian new ball bowlers with great gusto before Yuvraj applied the brakes with a haul of three wickets in a space of 10 deliveries.

Coming on to bowl when England had raced to 76 for 1 in 8 overs, Yuvraj made a big impact as he packed off one down batsman Luke Wright (34 in 21 balls with 3 fours and a six), Hales and rival captain Eoin Morgan (5) in quick succession to after Ravichandran Ashwin had captured the wicket of the other opener Michael Lumb in his second over.

Hales and Wright put on 68 runs for the second wicket before both departed and the England innings stuttered a bit before Jos Butler gave it the final impetus with a quick-fire unbeaten 33 in 21 balls with three sixes.

Bengal speedster Dinda came back for his second spell and captured two wickets in his third over which was the penultimate of the innings, by dismissing Samit Patel (24) and Tim Bresnan (0) to finish with two for 18 after Ashwin had conceded 15 runs in his last over.

Ashwin was carted for a six each by Patel and Jos Butler, who cracked 33 not out in 21 balls with 3 sixes, two of those off Awana’s last over. Awana and Chawla leaked plenty of runs.

Earlier, Hales – the 23-year-old Nottinghamshire opener playing his 13th T20 international for England and fourth against India, carted Dinda to the mid wicket fence twice with glorious pull shots when the home side medium pacer pitched short.

Nine runs came off the first over and then after Ashwin bowled a maiden to the other opener, left handed Michael Lumb – the second over of the innings – Hales smashed debutant Awana with two powerful leg-side hits for four, again pulling with disdain after stepping out against the Delhi bowler to loft him to the on.

Ashwin drew first blood with his first ball of his second over when Lumb, having been kept quiet in his first over, tried an ill-advised cross-batted heave and was trapped right in front.

With both the medium pacers proving expensive in their opening overs, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni brought on Ravindra Jadeja only to see the left arm spinner crashed over long on for a six by Hales and then pulled to long leg for a four as the score jumped at an alarming rate for the home team. England finished the Powerplay period at 51 for 1.

Though the field was spread out, Hales and one down batsman Luke Wright picked gaps with ease against the clueless Indian bowling attack.

Chawla was hit for three fours by Wright in his first over and then the batsman smashed Virat Kohli for a straight six.

Hales then completed his 50 off just 26 balls with seven fours and two sixes before England placed themselves in sight of a huge total at 89 for one in 10 overs.

Yuvraj, brought on to stem the run flow, struck in his second over when he had Wright stepping out to hit an aerial shot which was taken by Rahane at long-off.

Yuvraj then sent back danger man Hales and England captain Eoin Morgan in the space of four balls to stem the flow of runs.

Yuvraj Singh: ‘When it comes to T20s I just want to express myself. I just tried to bowl it a bit slowly. I told that to the other bowlers as well. Chasing was a good idea because of the dew. Last game of the Ranji Trophy I did well. I knew I was batting well. I don’t need a break and need to train harder.’

Yuvraj Singh is the Man of the Match

MS Dhoni: ‘The pressure was on the bowlers. We all know that with the new ball it is easy to score in the subcontinent. The game changes after the 8th or 9th over. Yuvraj was brilliant. The fielding was good. I was a bit worried at the start, they were scoring easily. Ashwin bowled well in the first three overs. Each and every bowler apart from Yuvraj bowled at least one bad over. Jinks gave us a good start. When Yuvraj went in, it was important that he score a few runs. We have done quite well in the shorter formats, but its more about the longer formats. Dinda did well, but we need to improve the death bowling.’

Morgan: We were disappointed with our batting. Our middle order failed to click. The positivity wasn’t there. We continually lost wickets. The start we got, we could have gotten a good score. We always thought we were in the game. The young side showed a lot of promise.

Raina: ‘I think we had a good start. The openers batted well. Virat and Yuvraj batted well. Me and MS did a good finishing job. We wanted to win the toss and field as we thought the dew would make a difference. Dinda bowled well in the death overs.’

Pitch Report: ‘This is the first international match played at this venue. The square boundaries are shorter than the straight boundaries. This pitch is very hard and there is a good covering of brown grass. There will be some extra bounce and that will help the batsmen. The pitch might not break up and it may not assist the spinners much.’

Inzamam-ul-Haq advises Shahid Afridi to just relax and enjoy his batting #PakvsInd

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 12:15 AM PST

Inzamam-ul-Haq advises Shahid Afridi to just relax and enjoy his battingShahid Afridi has been advised to ‘just relax and enjoy his game’ by the newly-appointed batting consultant Inzamam-ul-Haq who wants the flamboyant all-rounder to stop thinking about any outside pressures concerning his current form.

“Inzi bhai (Inzamam) told me to stop thinking about any outside pressures and just relax and enjoy the game, especially my batting. When he first came to the camp, I thought he would be telling me about the technique and batting but he didn’t say anything regarding that,” Afridi said.

Afridi was picked only for the two Twenty20s against India this month, but left out of the three one-dayers. But the all-rounder has scored two half centuries in 50-over practice matches in Lahore, including 91 off 64 balls today to catch the attention of the national selectors and team management.

“Inzi bhai said there is nothing wrong with my batting and I only need to get my confidence back and the best way to do it is to go and play my natural game.

“I have stopped thinking about what will happen next. I just want to go and do my best and enjoy my game. I have been under pressure for a while now and I want to get over it,” said the 34-year-old.

Afridi, who has played 349 one-dayers the third most for a Pakistani, said the coming tour to India will be decisive to his career.

“It’s a very important series for both teams and as a senior player I want to go and contribute my bit to the team’s performance,” he added.

Pakistan’s limited-overs captain Misbah-ul-Haq also told reporters at the Gaddafi stadium that Afridi can be retained for the three ODIs in India if he strikes form in the two T20 International matches.

“If he maintains his form and if we require him, we will definitely consider him to remain for the ODIs as well,” Misbah said.

Misbah said Inzamam has helped the batsmen how to be mentally strong while playing against India.

“Inzamam brings a wealth of experience with him and is basically telling the players how to deal with pressure and how to react in certain situations. He has focused on telling the players what to expect in India,” he said.

“Inzamam has been paying individual attention to the batsmen including Afridi and I think his presence is already helping them,” Misbah added.

Misbah said he has told the players not to read too much into India’s recent Test series defeat to England.

“We need to be careful and not underestimate them.

Definitely they will be under pressure because of the Test series defeat but they have the ability to bounce back in their own backyard in limited overs cricket,” he added.

He also said that the team was not totally dependent on off-spinner Saeed Ajmal to win in India.

“He is a quality bowler but we are not solely depending on him to win us the series. India has lot of depth in their batting and to beat them all our bowlers have to put in a team effort.”

Meanwhile, former Pakistan captain, Wasim Akram has also joined in the chorus against the dropping of Afridi from the ODI team.

“I don’t understand what the selectors are thinking. If they consider him out of favour they shouldn’t have picked him for the T20 matches as well,” Wasim told reporters here.

“Afridi is a senior player and someone of whom the opposition is always worried about. In India, you need experienced players to handle the pressure and tension,” he said.
