Marlon Samuels helps West Indies beat Bangladesh in one-off T20 #BanvsWI

Posted: 10 Dec 2012 10:11 AM PST

Marlon Samuels smashed 85 off 43 balls Monday to help West Indies defeat Bangladesh by 18 runs in the lone Twenty20 match at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Bangladesh lost only one wicket to reach 179, but batted too slowly to get the victory. West Indies piled up 197 for 4 after captain Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bat first.

Samuels hit nine sixes and three boundaries in aggressive batting, backed by Darren Bravo who smashed 41 off 28 balls.

The tourists lost aggressive opener Chris Gayle (6) early but Samuels and Bravo took charge to steer West Indies to a strong position.

Bangladesh’s aggressive opener Tamim Iqbal remained unbeaten on 88 off 61 balls that included 10 boundaries and two sixes.

Mahmudullah provided support, making 64 off 48 balls. Anamul Haque added 22 before being caught by Darren Sammy off Kemar Roach. That was the only Bangladesh wicket to fall.

Rubel Hossain struck early, removing both openers Gayle and Dwyne Smith (24). But he proved very expensive and finished with 2 for 63, including 29 runs in the 20th over he bowled.

Sohag Gazi and Ziaur Rahman claimed one wicket each.

Pakistan announce squad for India tour, Afridi dropped for ODIs #IndvsPak

Posted: 10 Dec 2012 09:40 AM PST

Pakistan cricket selectors on Monday left out Shahid Afridi for the three one-day internationals against India while retaining the enigmatic all-rounder for the two Twenty20s against its archrival.

Chief selector Iqbal Qasim says Afridi has to prove his form in the two Twenty20s “if he wants to be considered for the future one-day internationals.”

The selectors also dropped opening batsman Imran Nazir and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq from both formats of the game after they figured in this year’s World Twenty20.

The series begins with Twenty20 games at Bangalore on December 25 and Ahmedabad on December 27. The one-day games are scheduled to be played in Chennai on December 30, Kolkata on January 3 and New Delhi on January 6.

Twenty20 squad: Mohammad Hafeez (captain), Nasir Jamshed, Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal, Umar Amin, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan, Sohail Tanveer, Umar Gul, Asad Ali, Zulfiqar Babar, Ahmed Shahzad

One-day squad: Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Nasir Jamshed, Haris Sohail, Kamran Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan, Umar Gul, Zulfiqar Babar, Imran Farhat, Umar Akmal, Anwar Ali.

Bangladesh vs West Indies T20 Post Match Presentation Mirpur 2012 #BanvsWI

Sammy: ‘We wanted to finish the year on a good note. It was good to see the way the guys batted, especially Marlon. He reminded me of the World Cup finals. We knew that Bangladesh will give it a go but they had to score at over 10 runs per over. We always knew that 190 was enough on this track. Gayle has bowled well for us in this series. Roach has also bowled well. It was good that we held our nerves and won in the end. The ODI series and the T20 was very competitive and we enjoyed our stay, now we’re looking forward to go back to our families.’

Samuels: ‘I knew that I just had to stick in there. Someone had to bat around me and Bravo did that wonderfully. We came here as the champions and we were relaxed. Once I get in, I can get the job done so I back myself. I’m going down under for the Big Bash next.’

Marlon Samuels is the Man of the Match.

Rahim: ‘Probably the last over changed the game but you can’t blame Rubel. When Marlon hits, he hits them continuously. He did it to Malinga in the World Cup final too, so credit to him. Haque and Tamim Iqbal played really well in the first 4 overs and we got a flying start but lost our way a bit in the middle. It’s nice to see the top order scoring runs. I thought WI played really well. They have the strength to hit whenever they want. We have to work hard and take confidence from this series.’

Rahul Dravid questions skill, ability and talent of Indian players #IndvsEng

Posted: 10 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST

Former India captain Rahul Dravid was scathing in his criticism after India’s abject surrender in the Kolkata Test, questioning the “skill, ability and talent” of the players who are representing the country.

“People talk about attitude and say (the players) don’t care because there is too much money in the Indian Premier League. That’s one side of things but the main thing is their lack of skill and ability, which is more worrying for me. It raises questions as to the talent and quality of players coming through,” Dravid told ‘BBC Test Match Special’.

“One of the challenges India face is that our domestic cricket is not of the quality to allow players to seamlessly move into international cricket.”

There is a lot of anger among the cricket-crazy Indian fans and the veteran of 164 Tests and 13,288 runs feels that it is absolutely justified.

“A lot of people are upset not just by losing but the manner of the defeats. India won three tosses and had the wicket in their favour in Mumbai and the best of the batting conditions here in Kolkata but they just haven’t been able to capitalise or put up a fight,” said Dravid, who had retired from international cricket last March.

Dravid along with Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble and Virender Sehwag formed the core of a solid Indian Test team that reached the pinnacle of success winning in Australia, England, Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand.

“England have put a mirror up to the Indian cricket team and shown them the challenges that they face. Successful teams have a group of players who come through together and peak at the same time.”

The ‘Wall’ feels that ‘A’ tours are becoming increasingly more important.

“I think having ‘A’ tours and the academy system is becoming more and more important and I think England have been pretty good with that in the way that the academy travels every winter to different parts of the world. I think that is something India can learn from England,” Dravid said.

“It is about recognising that the Indian team is in a bit of transition and working out how to bring through young players who have the skill, technique, temperament and desire to play Test cricket.”

Dravid also admitted that Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha didn’t deliver as per expectations.

“India have been outbowled in the spin department and that’s a worrying sign because spin has been our strength.”

Although he is thoroughly disappointed with the Indian team’s effort in the field and their general fitness standards, he was blunt in stating that it can’t be used as an excuse.

“India have been poor in the field and their physical fitness is disappointing me. That’s not an excuse. You can’t demand runs, but you can at least demand accountability in terms of intensity and effort.”

There is always a possibility that the Indian team would come back stronger and level the series in the final Test in Nagpur but the 40-year-old feels that there is a need for long-term planning.

“Irrespective of what happens in Nagpur, the lessons need to be learned from the series if India wants to be a consistently successful team and challenge again for the number one ranking,” he concluded.

Pakistan should not tour India: Ehsan Mani #PakvsInd

Posted: 10 Dec 2012 07:30 AM PST

Former ICC president Ehsan Mani has criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board for agreeing to tour India for a short one-day series later this month.

“I think the PCB is wrong to have agreed to this. If it is a political decision, then the PCB should have asked the politicians to make sure that India reciprocated by coming and playing against Pakistan even if it was at a neutral venue,” Mani said in an interview.

Mani who was Pakistan’s representative in the ICC before becoming its president in 2003 said he couldn’t understand how the PCB agreed to play in India when the nation owes Pakistan two series which it has cancelled out on.

He said from a reciprocity point of view, it is totally wrong that Pakistan should be going to India.

“My opinion is Pakistan should not be going to India at all. India or the BCCI went out of its way after the Mumbai attack to isolate Pakistan cricket at the ICC,” Mani said.

He pointed out that BCCI knew well that by refusing to play Pakistan even at a neutral venue, they were going to cost the PCB a huge amount of money.

“This short series will enable BCCI to earn over USD 100 million, probably as much as USD 150 million. All we’re doing is to help India make a lot of money out of us, with no assurance of a reciprocal tour,” he noted.

“It is sort of trying to get the headlines. I don’t see any benefit to Pakistan cricket in terms of getting cricket back to Pakistan by playing this series. Certainly, I am not in favour of it.”

Mani was also critical of the way PCB was being run. “The biggest stakeholders of cricket in Pakistan are the cricket associations and the affiliate members of the PCB. They have no say in who will run Pakistan cricket.

The person who is enforced on them by the president of Pakistan, who is the Patron, means that person has no accountability to the stakeholders – he’s given a total free hand to do what he wishes with no accountability,” he explained.

Mani said since there were no accountability, the person who heads the board works for his own benefits.

He also pointed out that while there was no financial crisis in the PCB, it was worrying to see the pace at which the Board has been increasing its expenditure since Zaka Ashraf took over.

“Since Zaka Ashraf has come in the expenditure of the Pakistan Cricket Board has increased by Rs 30 million a month. What is this money being spent on? When I say expenditure, I am just talking about the payroll cost.

“It’s not coaches or anything – its cronies. That is the big damage that is being done to Pakistan cricket. Money spent on people like big government employees who manage to give jobs for political gains. These are the sort of issues that have to be tackled,” he said.

Nasser Hussain questions Indian players’ commitment towards Test cricket #IndvsEng

Posted: 10 Dec 2012 07:00 AM PST

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has questioned the “attitude” of some of India’s “God-Like” cricketers, and also doubted their hunger to succeed in the longer version of the game.

He handpicked some of Indian cricket’s big names and questioned their commitment towards Test cricket in the wake of the India’s back-to-back defeat in the ongoing four-Test series against England.

“India have big questions to answer in the aftermath of the Kolkata Test and the biggest surrounds the attitude of their near God-like top names,” Hussain wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.

“When the likes of MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir and the rest went back to their hotel rooms after that defeat in the third Test, how much were they hurting? How much hunger for the long-haul form of the game with its mental and physical demands have these multi-millionaire players still got?

“Are they thinking, deep down, ‘Never mind’, and prioritising instead the fun, glamour and huge financial rewards that come from the Indian Premier League?”

“(Coach Duncan) Fletcher will want to look into the eyes of Dhoni, Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and even (Sachin) Tendulkar to see how much hunger they have,” he wrote in his piece.

Hussain feels India desperately need a win in the last Test in Nagpur, begining December 13 to redeem their battered reputation to some extent.

“That is the crux of the issue now for India. The last thing their cricket needs, really, is a win in Nagpur and a share of this series because all that would do is paper over the cracks.

“India left Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh out of their squad for the final Test but it is attitudes as much as personnel that need to change,” he said.

Anil Kumble hopeful of team India leveling the series against England #IndvsEng

Posted: 10 Dec 2012 06:18 AM PST

Former India skipper Anil Kumble on Monday said that he is hopeful that India can level the four-match Test series at Nagpur.

“I am hopeful that India can still do well in Nagpur, a centre where they have done well in the past and draw level,” Anil was quoted as saying by Times of India.

He also said that it was not fair to judge the team based on a couple of losses.

“It is not fair to judge the Indian team by results in a couple of Test matches (Mumbai and Kolkata). Besides one must give due credit to England under Alastair Cook who have played well in Indian conditions,” Kumble said.

According to Jaideep Shenoy's report, Kumble was in Adyar near Mangalore on Monday at the inauguration of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore-KSCA Cricket Academy.
