Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik guides Pakistan to 5 wicket win over India in 1st T20Pakistan on Tuesday snatched a thrilling five-wicket victory over India in the first Twenty20 International to record their first win in shortest format against the hosts, whose bad streak continued close on the heels of their disastrous series against England.

Scorecard | Highlights 1st T20 India vs Pakistan

India’s batting woes saw them end on a meagre 133 for nine in 20 overs which the Pakistan chased down with two balls remaining, after suffering early jitters due to a brilliant opening spell by debutant Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Pakistan needed 10 off the final over and Shoaib Malik hit a straight six off the fourth delivery off Indian bowling’s weakest link Ravindra Jadeja to clinch the issue.

Skipper Mohammed Hafeez played a classic knock of 61 off 44 balls which included six fours and two sixes and added 106 runs for the fourth wicket with veteran Malik who contributed 57 off 50 balls with three fours and three sixes. The stand proved to be decisive in the end.

Debutant Bhuvneshwar had reduced Pakistan to 12 for three taking all the wickets in his first two overs when they started the chase.

The UP seamer started by bowling outgoing deliveries to left-hander Naseer Jamshed and then got one to nip back which crashed into his off-stump.

He then removed Ahmed Shehzad with a delivery that was fuller and moved a shade to find the edge which was taken by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The best was saved for Umar Akmal who got a ball that came back sharply to send his middle-stump for a walk. Skipper Dhoni decided to use him in a single spell and he ended with brilliant figures of 4-0-9-3.

Down in the dumps at 12 for three, skipper Hafeez and senior player Malik came together and slowly built a partnership.

The duo were watchful in the beginning but once they settled down, they played some lovely strokes. Virat Kohli came in for some punishment. Both Malik and Hafeez hit Yuvraj’s lomg hops for a six each over deep mid-wicket to ease the pressure off.

The 50 run partnership came off 53 balls and Pakistan were well on their way to victory.

Hafeez completed his half century with a big straight six off Jadeja. When Hafeez was finally out off Ishant Sharma’s bowling Pakistan needed less than 20 runs to win.

Earlier, Indian batting suffered a sensational collapse as they were restricted for a paltry 133 for nine after being put into bat by Mohammed Hafeez.

Indian openers Ajinkya Rahane and Gautam Gambhir made a solid start putting on 77 for the first wicket but everything went haywire from then on as they lost nine wickets for an addition of 47 runs.

Such was the plight of Indian batting that save Gambhir who scored 43 (5×4, 1×6) and Rahane who smashed 42 off 31 balls, all the other frontline batsmen failed miserably. Only Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina managed double-figure scores with contributions of 10 runs each.

While Pakistan bowlers led by off-spinner Saeed Ajmal did a splendid job in the back 10, the Indian batsmen showed lack of application and their running between the wickets was also pretty poor.

Umar Gul was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers grabbing three for 21 after conceding 13 in his first over while Ajmal chipped in with two for 25 keeping things under check during middle overs.

However, India had started on a positive note with Rahane taking on tallest international cricketer Mohammed Irfan (7 feet 1 inch) and Sohail Tanveer with consummate ease. Gambhir was a bit scratchy at the other end as he found it difficult to get going.

The shot of the Indian innings was Rahane’s six over extra cover off Ajmal’s delivery. After settling down, Gambhir also hit Gul for a six over mid-wicket.

It was Shahid Afridi who gave Pakistan the first breakthrough when Rahane tried to repeat the lofted shot over extra cover only to be holed out by Umar Akmal at long-on. India’s slide started after this first wicket.

Gambhir who was just looking good for a big score then failed to make it for a second run after he had run the first one slowly.

Yuvraj Singh started with a big heave over deep mid-wicket that went for a six while Kohli also helped himself to a boundary off Hafeez’s bowling.

Irfan came back for his final over and Kohli found the awkward bounce generated by Irfan difficult to handle and was caught behind to a rising delivery. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was fooled an Ajmal delivery that turned a shade to kiss the side of the off-stump.

From 77/0, India were 108 for four and soon it became 115 for five with Yuvraj being caught in the deep. Raina became Ajmal’s second victim as his leg-stump was uprooted.

Rohit Sharma was out by a brilliant direct throw from Shoaib Malik while Ravindra Jadeja was beaten for pace and bounce by Umar Gul as he was caught behind. Ishant Sharma was yorked and suddenly India were 124 for nine.

Hafeez: ‘It was a great effort. We wanted to start the series well. Irfan was a surprise package and he did well, so did Gul and Ajmal. We selectd Irfan because he is tall and he can bowl quick, he did that today. We knew that we had a good bowling attack, they just proved it today. Malik played a good knock with me. Once the new ball went, we had a chance to go after the bowlers. We took risks at the right time and it worked. This is a gift for the whole nation.’

Hafeez is also the Man of the Match.

Dhoni: ‘We should have got more runs. We got a fantastic start from the openers but we couldn’t capitalise. We lost regular wickets and that hurt us. We should have got 10-15 runs more. 145 would have been a safe score, but we also had to bowl full and not bowl short. It was a gamble to finish the pacers early. Malik and Hafeez were going well so we needed wickets. They were also going at a very fast pace so we had to take a gamble. The pacers did well, they left 10 runs for the last over which I thought was good.’

Shoaib Malik: ‘Honestly, the way they started their bowling, it was too good. I forgot the bowler’s name (Kumar), he was just too good. Our bowlers are world class. They have been performing for a couple of years and hope they continue. When you play against India, there is always pressure. I scored some runs, so my family will be happy. (When asked whether one family member will be happy or sad)’

Hafeez: ‘Looking forward to do well here. We always love to tour India. The pitch will help the seamers, so we will bowl first. We had a coulpe of practice sessions. Conditions are not too different from Pakistan. Umar Amin is not playing. I can’t remember the rest of the team.’

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: ‘We were looking to bowl first as well. Dew will be a factor tonight. We’re playing Pakistan in India after a long time. Bangalore is a good stadium to start the tour, there will be a lot of people and the noise doesn’t go out of the ground. Ashwin, Awana, Chawla are not playing. Bhuvneshwar and Ishant are playing.

Pitch report: It looks pretty flat, there is some grass, but it’s all rolled in. Sunny Gavaskar says it is a flaky pitch which has a little bit of cracks. Spinners might get a bit of grip and turn. 160 will be a good score on this. Dew will be a factor tonight.

Tight security for India-Pakistan 1st T20 at Bangalore #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Posted: 25 Dec 2012 04:50 AM PST

Tight security for India-Pakistan 1st T20 at BangalorePolice were out in full force in Bangalore on Tuesday as part of a massive security operation ahead of Pakistan’s first cricket tour of India for five years.

The tour begins with a Twenty20 international which will be played under lights at Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy stadium later Tuesday.

Iron barricades were lined up and riot control vehicles on duty as security men patrolled the stadium in the heart of Bangalore, the capital of the south-eastern state of Karnataka.

“We have completely sanitised and secured the stadium. We are confident that the match will be played without any disruptions,” a security officer on duty told AFP.

Police were seen carrying out heavy frisking at the imposing stadium gates with as many as 200 surveillance cameras mounted on mastheads for constant monitoring of all activity in and around the ground.

A crack police force, including Indian army commandos, were guarding the luxury ITC Gardenia hotel, where both teams are staying.

The teams are set to play another Twenty20 match in the western city of Ahmedabad followed by three one-day matches during the short series, which is the first since the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The Islamist attacks which killed 166 people led to a complete breakdown in relations between the two countries before efforts were renewed last year to bring their fragile peace process back on track.

Hardline Indian nationalist organisations including Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Shiv Sena have both threatened to hold protests outside all the venues, slamming the Indian government’s decision to host Pakistan.

New Delhi has defended the move by stressing the need to move the “clock forward”.

Cricket has been used in the past to mend diplomatic ties between the two nations, which have fought three wars since they gained independence in 1947.

In a show of diplomatic bonhomie, the prime ministers of both nations symbolically shook hands as they watched their teams in the semi-final of last year’s World Cup in the northern Indian city of Mohali.

But the prospects of a diplomatic dividend this time round appear slim and there has been no announcement of a visit by a Pakistani leader for any match.

The local press on Tuesday lamented the lack of buzz that usually marks the build-up to India-Pakistan encounters.

The Indian Express newspaper noted that the series had been put together more as a “neighbourly gesture than anything else, leaving the tour in many ways fighting for context”.

Preview: Australia vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Melbourne (MCG), 2012 #AusvsSL

Posted: 25 Dec 2012 02:14 AM PST

Preview Australia vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Melbourne (MCG), 2012A last-gasp victory over Sri Lanka in Hobart gave Australia a sorely needed boost after disappointment against South Africa, but a mounting injury toll has tempered the hosts’ Christmas cheer in the lead-up to the second test in Melbourne. Captain Michael Clarke, in white-hot form with the bat, remains a doubt to play the Boxing Day test after suffering a hamstring strain at Hobart, while front-line seamer Ben Hilfenhaus has been ruled out with a side strain.

Top young talents Pat Cummins and James Pattinson have already been lost for the series, and have been joined in the casualty ward by fellow quicks John Hastings and Josh Hazlewood. Six months out from the Ashes, Australia’s hopes of using its home summer to hone a battle-hardened attack lie in tatters. Australia’s selectors have compounded the angst, however, with a controversial rotation policy that has seen injury-free bowlers rested for fear they might break down, drawing howls of criticism from former players and pundits.

The in-form Mitchell Starc is the latest casualty of that policy, and despite taking a five-wicket haul to help Australia seal the Hobart win, will cool his heels in the Melbourne Cricket Ground dressing room when the test starts Wednesday. “We’ve got to be very mindful of the fact that we’ve got such a lot of important cricket coming up,” Australia head coach and selector Mickey Arthur told reporters on Monday.

“And Mitch will be integral to that. It’s tough on Mitch but hopefully he misses one test to make sure we don’t have another injury.” Paceman Starc’s enforced break and Hilfenhaus’s absence mean Australia will bring an overhauled pace attack for a third consecutive test. The mercurial Mitchell Johnson earns a recall after being dumped following the third and final test against South Africa in Perth.

Although the Proteas’ batsmen bullied Australia in the series-sealing victory at the WACA, the 31-year-old Johnson was the pick of the hosts’ bowlers and will hope for a big haul to remain in favour ahead of tours to India and England. Johnson, however, may have to wait his turn behind debutant Jackson Bird, who will open the bowling against Sri Lanka’s formidable batting lineup in front of a bumper crowd at the MCG.

The 26-year-old Bird has played only 17 first-class matches, but is the leading wicket-taker in the domestic Sheffield Shield, and has enjoyed good form for his adopted Tasmania state in his two matches at the MCG. He is likely to share the new ball with fiery paceman Peter Siddle, who took nine wickets in a man-of-the-match performance at Hobart and is the only pace bowler retained from the first test.

Sri Lanka have their own pace bowling problems, with their raw attack struggling in Hobart, but they will again pin their hopes of a breakthrough first test win in Australia on their batsmen and spinner Rangana Herath. With the team having lost the coin toss and the benefit of batting first, Sri Lanka’s batsmen frustrated the Australian bowlers for nearly four sessions on a deteriorating wicket at Hobart, only to collapse after tea and surrender the test within the last hour.

They will hope to have better luck with the toss at the MCG, where the drop-in pitch traditionally rewards batting sides who survive a torrid first session on day one, before offering something for the spinners on days four and five. The Sri Lankans have additional motivation in their first Boxing Day test in 17 years, with master batsman Kumar Sangakkara needing only 40 runs to reach the magical 10,000-run milestone in tests.

The 35-year-old would become only the 11th cricketer to reach the landmark and second Sri Lankan after captain Mahela Jayawardene. “I think Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela have played a huge part with the youngsters,” middle order batsman and captain-in-waiting Angelo Mathews told reporters. “We would like to get (Sangakkara) 100 this time. It’s a very special game for us.” Australia skipper Clarke had a short session batting in the nets on Monday and would be given until the last minute to prove his fitness, the team’s coach Arthur said.

Should he fail to recover, vice captain Shane Watson will take the reins, with six-test top order batsman Usman Khawaja replacing Clarke in the order.

India-Pakistan series hit by media coverage dispute #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Posted: 24 Dec 2012 11:42 PM PST

India-Pakistan series hit by media coverage disputePakistan’s first cricket tour to India in five years faced a media blackout Monday after international news agencies, including AFP, suspended coverage over a decision to bar their photo counterparts.

News outlets said they would not be filing any text or pictures after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to accredit the international picture agencies Getty Images and Action Images as well as two Indian agencies.

The five-match series is due to start on Tuesday with a Twenty20 international in Bangalore.

“It is regrettable that the politically-charged Pakistan tour will be affected by the BCCI’s failure to recognise the long-standing importance of photographic news agencies in the flow of sport and news images every day,” said the News Media Coalition, which represents a group of media organisations including AFP.

Other international agencies who are members of the coalition, such as Thomson Reuters and the Associated Press, will also halt text and photo coverage.

It is the second time in as many months that a series involving India has been hit by a coverage suspension, with a similar dispute embroiling England’s recent tour.

As well as the suspension of coverage by the agencies, English newspapers and leading websites refused to use images supplied by the BCCI and instead used file pictures.

“As a direct result of the BCCI stance, great sporting moments from the cricket tours to India are going unrecorded and therefore lost forever. England’s games were the hidden series and the Pakistan tour is heading for the same fate,” said Andrew Moger, executive director of the NMC.

The World Association of Newspapers is backing the suspension, saying the BCCI was “denying the ability of editors to select from the best of photography for the benefit of readers”.

A BCCI spokesman declined to comment but did refer reporters to a statement issued for the England tour which said there was “no intention to censor or limit bona fide news reporting” and emphasised that news agencies had been accredited.

The photo agencies however had been refused as the BCCI deemed “their primary businesses involved the commercial sale and licensing of images rather than the supply of images to news publications for bona fide editorial purposes.”
