Bangladesh beat West Indies by 2 wickets to win the series by 3-2 #BanvsWI

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 11:38 AM PST

A spirited Bangladesh led by all-rounder Mohammad Mamhmudullah edged out the West Indies in the fifth and final one-day by four wickets in Dhaka on Saturday, taking the series 3-2.

Mahmudullah took 2-38 to help the home team bowl the tourists for 217 in 48 overs and then scored a polished 48 to help the home team chase down the target for the loss of eight wickets with six overs to spare.

Bangladesh won the first match by seven wickets and the second by 160 runs — both in Khulna. The West Indies levelled the series with a four wicket win in the third and 75 runs in the fourth.

Both teams will now play a Twenty20 international in Dhaka on Monday.

It was Mahmudullah and captain Mushfiqur Rahim (44) who set the home team on the victory path through their 91-run stand for the fourth wicket after paceman Kemar Roach (5-56) had derailed them in early overs.

Roach struck thrice in his first five overs, removing Tamim Iqbal (eight), Anamul Haque (nought) and Jahurul Islam (10) to leave the home team in disarray at 30-3.

Mahmudullah hit seven boundaries in his 45-ball knock while Rahim smacked as many boundaries in his 56-ball knock.

But the West Indies staged a comeback through Sunil Narine (3-38) as the spinner removed both the batsmen in the space of 12 runs.

Nasir Hossain (39 not out) and Mominul Haque (25) added 53 for the sixth wicket as Bangladesh survived a late order slump to reach the target. Nasir hit Andre Russell for the winning boundary to send the packed crowd into jubiliation.

Earlier, Kieron Pollard hit a return to form with a robust 74-ball 85 and Darren Bravo notched a sedate 108-ball 51 during their 132-run fourth wicket stand to lift the tourists to 217 after they were put into bat.

Bangladesh had removed Kieran Powell (11), Marlon Samuels (one) and Chris Gayle (two) by the eight over.

Paceman Shafiul Islam, who replaced injured Mashrafe Mortaza in the squad, dismissed Gayle for a fifth failure in as many matches to finish with 3-31 in his nine overs.

Pollard, who like Gayle was a big flop in the last four matches, hit a six for his first scoring shot as he batted with aggression. He hit five boundaries and eight towering sixes to take the attack to the Bangladeshi bowlers.

He was finally dismissed in the 32nd over, bowled by spinner Haque. The Pollard-Bravo stand for the fourth wicket is a new record in all West Indies-Bangladesh one-dayers, beating the 92-run stand between Jimmy Adams and Shivnarine Chanderpaul in Dhaka in 1999.

Bravo hit three boundaries and a six before he was caught off Mahmudullah who finished with 2-38.

Devon Thomas chipped in with a useful 25 to take the West Indies past the 200-run mark.

Indian selectors likely to axe non-performers ahead of India-England 4th Test #IndvsEng

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST

With India on the verge of conceding a 1-2 series lead to England in the ongoing four-Test rubber, the national selectors are likely to ring in some changes in the squad for the fourth and last Test in Nagpur, starting December 13.

The five selectors, under chairman Sandeep Patil, will meet at the team hotel on Sunday to pick the squad for the Nagpur Test.

Yuvraj Singh’s spot is likely to be up for debate with talented Manoj Tiwary and Rohit Sharma seen as a possible replacement for the stylish left-hander.

Bengal batsman Tiwary scored an impressive 93 against England XI during their warm-up match against India A. He also smashed a fine 191 against Gujarat in a Ranji Trophy game which should attract the eyes of the selectors in tomorrow’s meeting.

Rohit Sharma is another name which is doing the rounds after the right-hander scored eye-catching 112 and 79 in the ongoing Ranji Trophy games.

Many of the top order batsmen have not shown the desired consistency in the series. Virat Kohli has been woefully out of form but the selectors are likely to persist with him.

If the problems with the famed Indian batting department were not enough, the selectors will also look to fix the issues in the home team’s bowling attack, which looked toothless in the last two Tests in comparison to the English bowlers’ fine showing.

The pace duo of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma looked lacklustre in the ongoing third Test at the Eden Gardens here and their selection will definitely be under scrutiny.

Zaheer, who took just as wicket after bowling 30 overs in England’s first innings during the ongoing third Test, looked unfit and was also criticised for not taking starts while fielding.

But all said and done, what might go in Zaheer’s favour is his experience.

Comeback man Ishant was equally out of sorts, claiming just one wicket in his return Test after more than 10 months.

Bengal pacer Ashok Dinda is a sure selection and in all probabilility, he might even make his Test debut in Nagpur.

In the spin department, Pragyan Ojha’s place in the side appears to be guaranteed after returning as the best bowler for India with four wickets.

Even though, Ashwin has drawm some criticism for his bowling in the last two Tests, the off-spinner may just make the cut after saving India from the ignominy of an innings defeat in the ongoing Test with an unbeaten 83-run knock in the second innings.

The selectors might also be forced to give a look to Amit Mishra and Piyush Chawla as the English batsmen are susceptible against leg-spin.

Mishra, who has 13 wickets from four Ranji matches, has a slight edge over Chawla having claimed 4-67 in the warm-up match between India A and England XI just before the start of the series.

Sunil Gavaskar disappointed with team India’s approach and attitude #IndvsEng

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 10:34 AM PST

Former skipper Sunil Gavaskar on Saturday criticised the Indian cricketers for their lacklustre “approach and attitude” towards preparations and said this was precisely the reason behind the home team’s disastrous performance in the ongoing Test series against England.

“We have been outplayed totally in all aspects of the game. Indian players need to look at their approach and attitude towards the preparation ahead of a game,” Gavaskar said.

“Talent wise there is no question, but I am disappointed with the approach of the Indian cricketers in the last one year.

“Taking 5-6 days break after the humiliating defeat in Mumbai was not acceptable. The Indian team should have shown a little more seriousness,” the batting legend told NDTV.

Gavaskar’s scathing comments came after India produced a pathetic batting display in the second innings of the third cricket Test at The Eden Gardens to stare at yet another humiliating defeat.

At stumps on the fourth day, India were 239 for nine in their second innings, giving them a lead of 32, and Gavaskar felt it is time the national selectors take some tough calls.

“It is difficult to ignore what happened in the last Test. The selectors will have a hard time to pick the team for the last Test in Nagpur.

“If the same set of players is not providing results, then the selectors should take a call,” he said.

“The Indians have nothing to talk about their performances so naturally they are defensive,” he added.

Gavaskar was full of praise for the English batsmen, especially captain Alastair Cook, for their brilliant show against Indian spinners and that too, in sub-continent conditions.

“England has worked very hard. Cook showed in Ahmedabad that spin can be tackled,” Gavaskar said.

“They (English batsmen) have applied themselves. The English batsmen saw how Cook had talked spin in the second innings in Ahmedabad and learnt from there.”

Apart from the 76-run knock in India’s first innings in the ongoing Test, Sachin Tendulkar has hardly anything to show in the series. But Gavaskar refused to put the blame on any individual and termed it a “collective failure”.

“Why pick on him (Tendulkar)? Who has scored runs? It’s a collective failure. He has given us 23 glorious years of his career,” he said.

Rahim: ‘The boys executed the plans well. There are a lot of areas to work on. The batting was poor in the last two matches but our bowling was good. Fielding needs to improve. I am glad that Nasir Hossain, Mominul and Gazi took Bangladesh through after the loss of early wickets.’

Rahim is the MoS for his fine captaincy.

Mahmudullah: ‘I was a bit worried when I got out. However, Mominul and Nasir Hossain batted well. I was just playing my natural game and I put away the bad balls. I am happy with my performance in this whole series and I am happy that we won this series. The crowds were fantastic’

Mahmudullah is the MoM for his 48 and for picking up 2/38.

Sammy: ‘I would like to congratulate the Bangladesh team for winning the series. They played some good cricket. We have not played well in this series. The guys battled it out under tough conditions. This loss has now dented our Christmas celebrations. A total of 240 was much more challenging on this track. The batting of Kieran Powell and Kieron Pollard was heartening. Kemar Roach bowled well but there was no support. The crowd have been fantastic and it is good to play in Bangladesh.’

Ashwin fights back as India on the brink of suffering another humiliating defeat #IndvsEng

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 04:45 AM PST

A spineless India were on the verge of a second successive humiliating defeat in their own backyard against England who were within sniffing distance of an emphatic victory in the third Test on Saturday.

Scorecard | Day 4 Highlights 3rd Test

After conceding a mammoth 207-run lead, India’s famed batsmen put up a pathetic display but R Ashwin (83 batting) and the tailenders delayed the inevitable as the hosts reached 239 for nine at close on the penultimate day.

Ashwin, who flopped as a bowler, provided some resistance as the last two wickets added 80 runs after being at a precarious 159 for eight at one stage, forcing the game to stretch into the fifth day with India having a slender lead of 32.

With one full day left, England were on course for a huge win and take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series.

India got off to a good start with Virender Sehwag (49) and Gautam Gambhir (40) putting on 86 runs but the innings completely came apart after the lunch break with wickets falling with embarrassing ease on an Eden Gardens track, which gave some assistance to the bowlers.

While the Indian bowlers looked completely ineffective, the English bowlers exploited the conditions far better and raise hopes of their first series win on Indian soil in 28 years.

After the humiliating 10-wicket defeat in Mumbai, the hosts once again seemed clueless in their own den with neither batting nor bowling clicking against an English side which was the one expected to struggle on the sub-continental dustbowls.

Steve Finn (3/37), James Anderson (2/38) and Graeme Swann were (2/70) were the wicket-takers for England.

Barring Ashwin, none of the Indian batsmen showed the stomach for a fight out as they perished to poor strokes. Cheteshwar Pujara (8), Sachin Tendulkar (5), Yuvraj Singh (11), Virat Kohli (20) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (0) were the big guns who failed to fire on a track in which England posted 523 in the first innings.

Rahim says that he would have bowled well as the wicket is a little dry. The team has a couple of good spinners. Naeem Islam and Mashrafe Mortaza are not playing. The bowlers bowled well and the batsmen have to stand up. He states that the fielding has got to be right on the mark.

Sammy says that WI would have batted first. He hopes that the team can post a better total than the one they posted yesterday. Andre Russell replaces Dwayne Smith.

BCCI chief N Srinivasan unhappy with Eden Gardens pitch for India-England 3rd Test #IndvsEng

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 01:02 AM PST

With India in an unenviable position in the Eden Gardens Test, Indian cricket board chief N Srinivasan Friday expressed his unhappiness about the track during a meeting with Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) chief Jagmohan Dalmiya.

“Srinivasan very informally said that things could have been different. He seemed somewhat unhappy,” a senior CAB official said.

“He said he was all for good cricket but the home advantage has to be kept in mind. He also said when the Indian team goes abroad it has to contend with unfavourable tracks,” the official said.

“We also discussed about the coming Pakistan tour in which Eden would host the second ODI,” he said.

Another source said Srinivasan spoke to Eden curator Prabir Mukherjee and advised him to cut down on his interaction with the media.

Ahead of the match, there was a controversy when Mukherjee slammed Indian skipper M.S. Dhoni for demanding a square turner. Later, the Board of Control for Cricket in India deputed its East India curator to supervise the preparation of the track.

The Eden pitch, far from a rank turner, has not been a happy hunting ground for the Indian spinners so far.

In reply to India’s first innings score of 316, England are now 509/6 with two days remaining in the match.

While the visitors are seemingly in a position where they cannot lose, India need to gear up for a grim battle to save the match.

With the four-match series locked 1-1, the winner in the Eden match will take an unassailable lead.
