Pakistan have an edge over India in fast bowling: Sohail Tanvir #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Posted: 23 Dec 2012 09:30 AM PST

Pakistan have an edge over India in fast bowling Sohail TanvirPakistan enjoy a clear advantage over India in the fast bowling department as the hosts don’t have a permanent pace attack, said visiting team seamer Sohail Tanvir.

“Pakistan have an edge over India in fast bowling as India lack good quality fast bowlers. Indian pacers are busy cementing their place in the team and they lack in confidence. India does not have permanent pace attack and we will try to take advantage of that,” left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir told reporters on Sunday.

Tanvir was of the view that an Indo-Pak is not just about good cricket but also about passion.

“Hopefully we will get to see exciting contest on the field. However, I am not talking about the result because both teams are good and balanced,” said Tanvir on the eve of the first of the two Twenty20 Internationals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Tanvir was also full of praise for Pakistan’s spin department led by Saeed Ajmal but rued the fact that the pacers performances get unnoticed because of the tweakers.

“With the arrival of Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez in Pakistan team and playing together in matches after matches, the performances of fast bowlers goes unnoticed,” he argued.

Tanvir said the experiences of playing in India would help him perform better in the series.

“I have played in India and performed really well. I cherish 2007 series in India where I bowled well and got many wickets in Tests and ODIs. My performance also was good in the IPL. I get inspired by these performances which help me in giving my best,” Tanvir said.

Tanvir said youngsters have a wonderful opportunity to put up a good show in the high-profile and become star players.

“Whoever performs against India becomes a star,” he added.

Tanvir said that any India-Pakistan series is full of pressure and the visitors are looking upto senior cricketers like Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul to deliver the goods.

“They (Afridi and Gul) are talented and hopefully they will deliver,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tanvir’s pace partner Umar Gul said Pakistani bowlers are well prepared to tackle the strong Indian batting line-up.

He said they have watched videos of the just-concluded India-England series to chalk out strategies against Indian batsmen.

Asked whether Pakistan would fancy their chances in the series in the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, who retired from ODIs today, Gul said, “It does not matter whether Sachin is playing or not because the India team is formidable without the star batsman.

“We hope to play good cricket against India. We are a balanced team, boasting of good spinners, pacers and batsmen.”

Words are not enough to sing Sachin Tendulkar’s praise: Pakistan cricket team #IndvsPak

Posted: 23 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST

Words are not enough to sing Sachin Tendulkar's praise Pakistan cricket teamThe visiting Pakistan team was caught off guard Sunday by the dramatic announcement of Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar to retire from One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

“We will miss Sachin sadly though we have been looking forward to play against him in this series,” Pakistan T20 and ODI captain Mohammed Hafeez told reporters here after a three-hour practice session ahead of their first T20 tie Dec 25 at the Chinnaswamy stadium in the city centre.

The Pakistan team landed in this tech hub late Saturday to play two T20s and three ODIs over the next two weeks five years after their last visit to India.

“As a nation and players, we feel sad that Sachin has retired from ODIs ahead of this series, as he had his debut in international cricket on Pakistan soil (1989). The world will miss his artistry on the field as he has been a great entertainer of the game,” Hafeez reiterated.

Echoing Hafeez, Pakistan pacer Sohail Tanvir said it was an honour and privilege to bowl against such a great batsman and a wonderful human being.

“I enjoyed bowling to him because the margin of error was so less that he could dispatch even good deliveries to the fence. Words are not enough to describe his achievements for India. He deserves the highest respect from the cricketing world,” Tanvir said.

Clarifying that absence of Sachin would not make much of a difference for the team, Hafeez said though India had other great players, Sachin was Sachin and in that sense, none could equal him in many respects.

“We admire the man for his sheer domineering character who rattled all types of bowlers around the world. We all can praise his efforts to excel in international cricket. There is no doubt that he is a genius. We wish him good luck for the future,” Hafeez said.

Tanvir also wished best of luck for Sachin and hoped he would hit many more centuries for India in Tests though he was out of form in the recent games against England in the home series.

Paying glowing tributes to Sachin, Pakistan speedstar Umar Gul said it was a challenge to bowl against Sachin and a delight to pick his wicket every time as he had an excellent reading of the ball.

“India should be proud of having a great cricketer like Sachin, whose presence in the team over the last two decades had inspired a generation of players and contributed in nurturing young cricketers like Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina. I am sure many more like them have learnt a lot from him,” Gul recalled.

Pakistan’s young batsman Umar Amin, who has been in and out of team, admitted that he would have loved to play against Sachin in this series if he had not retired and continued to play in the shorter version of the game.

“I played against India in 2010 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, but unfortunately Sachin wasn’t there. I would like to say only one thing that if cricket is religion then Sachin is god,” Amin asserted.

Criticism might have prompted Sachin Tendulkar to retire: Sunil Gavaskar

Posted: 23 Dec 2012 08:37 AM PST

Criticism might have prompted Sachin Tendulkar to retire- Sunil GavaskarFormer India captain Sunil Gavaskar says consistent criticism might have played a part in influencing Sachin Tendulkar’s decision to quit One-day cricket and it would have been fantastic had he gone after after completing 50 ODI centuries.

Tendulkar had been struggling for runs for quite some time, leading to debates how long he should continue playing and today he announced that he will no longer play ODIs.

“I think he really cares for Indian cricket. May be whatever he saw, read and heard might have prompted him to make a call. But I feel, he knows his body well,” Gavaskar said.

“He is finishing on 49 ODI hundreds. I would have loved to see him get 50 centuries. That would have been fantastic,” Gavaskar told NDTV.

On being asked that quitting ODI format would at least give Tendulkar a chance to play 200 Tests, Gavaskar said it should not be looked that way.

“We are looking too far ahead. If he plays the next four Tests, that will take him to 198 and the next two tests will be later in the next year. It’s almost a year down the road.”

Gavaskar also said that since Tendulkar had already cut down on his appearance in ODIs, people are used to his absence but still losing him is a big loss.

“I think the public, the team, the captain and the selectors are used to not seeing Tendulkar around in ODIs but the fact that he is not there is a big loss,” Gavaskar said.

Asked if it was Tendulkar, the batsman or Tendulkar the fielder who has taken the retirement call, Gavaskar said,”It’s Tendulkar the cricketer.”

“Officially he may have announced it today but mentally, he might have done in March after the Asia Cup.”

For Gavaskar, the hurricane knock that Tendulkar played against Australia in Sharjah was his best.

“It has to be the Sharjah one when India had to qualify for the final and not only India need to win the match but score certain runs in certain overs. That was when the real pressure was,” Gavaskar said.

Tendulkar had made 143 off 131 balls with nine fours and five sixes in April 1998.

Gavaskar also felt that it would be World Cup win that Tendulkar would cherish the most in his life.

“It’s always going to be the World Cup win. There may be many personal achievements but it’s entirely different feeling. For me also the 1983 World Cup win is the greatest moment of my career. I did not contribute much and it felt on top of the world and Tendulkar did contribute. It has to be right up there,” he said.

BCCI announce squad for India-Pakistan ODI, T20 series, Yuvraj Singh returns ODIUnder-fire Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday retained captaincy while all-rounder Yuvraj Singh returned to India’s ODI team for the first time since last year’s World Cup triumph after he was picked in the 15-member squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan.

Yuvraj, who was recalled to the Indian Twenty20 squad for the World T20 within months of recovering from a rare germ cell cancer, played his last ODI against Sri Lanka in the final of the 50-over World Cup last April.

Since senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar announced retirement from one-day cricket, the selectors have picked Ajinkya Rahane.

Out-of-form Zaheer Khan, who was dropped after the first two Tests against England, did not find favour with the selection panel headed by Sandeep Patil. Virender Sehwag, who had opted out of the two T20 matches against England, was also called back into the one-day side for the three-match series.

Also returning to the ODI squad will be Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Amit Mishra and Ashok Dinda while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shami Ahmed will be playing in their debut series.

The core of the squad remains pretty much the same with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin and Suresh Raina retaining their places.

The team for the T20 matches against Pakistan was also announced after the selection meeting. The squad is more or less the same with only Abhimanyu Mithun making for Delhi pacer Ishant Sharma.

ODI squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Amit Mishra

T20 squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Capt), Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Ashok Dinda, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Parvinder Awana, Piyush Chawla, Ambati Rayudu.

Toss to play crucial role in India-Pakistan series: MS Dhoni #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 11:30 PM PST

Toss to play crucial role in India-Pakistan series- MS DhoniGearing up for what promises to be a high-voltage limited-overs series against arch-foes Pakistan, India cricket captain MS Dhoni said the toss will play a crucial role in the clashes as both teams are quite similar.

“Winning the toss will be crucial because dew may have an impact. If you see both the sides, they are quite same. Their ability to play spinners is quite same. I think it will be nice couple of games,” he said after second and final twenty20 match against England here last night.

The Twenty20 matches against Pakistan are scheduled on December 25 and 28 in Bangalore and Ahmedabad respectively, while the ODI series starts in Chennai on December 30.

The second one-day game against Pakistan will be held in Kolkata on January 3 followed by the last game on January 6 in Delhi.

On playing Pakistan and the importance of the series, Dhoni said, “tell me one series which is not big for us.

Whether we play England, Pakistan, Australia or any other series. For us it is all the same.

“That is how we look at it and don’t really look into who we are playing because that can only increase the pressure.

We keep it very simple, whoever the opposition is. We look at the format and try to execute our plans.”

The three-match series against Pakistan will be followed by the five-match ODI rubber against England that commences on January 11 at Rajkot. The tourists will return to India after taking a break for Christmas and New Year.

The other four games are to be held at Kochi (January 15), Ranchi (January 19), Mohali (January 23) and Dharamsala (January 27).

This will be followed with a series against Australia at home in February.

On the non-stop cricket schedule, Dhoni said, “As an individual, if you feel that playing a series or the next few games you may get injured, which may take you out of the game for six to eight weeks, then it is better off to tell BCCI that you need some rest because you won’t be available if you play a few games so it’s crucial.

“I am not worried about too many series happening because I am someone who loves to play cricket. Maybe a few years from the other end will be shortened because of the amount of cricket we play.

“But it is a good thing because you are always playing the best bowlers in the world and the momentum keeps you going. I am not worried about too many games.”

Sachin Tendulkar announces retirement from ODIs

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 10:21 PM PST

Sachin Tendulkar announces retirement from ODIsOne of the game’s all-time greats, Sachin Tendulkar, on Sunday announced his retirement from one-day cricket, bringing to an end a glorious 23-year-old career in the format during which he rewrote numerous batting records.

“I have decided to retire from the One-Day format of the game. I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of being part of a World Cup wining Indian team. The preparatory process to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right earnest,” the 39-year-old said in a statement released by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) on Sunday.

“I would like to wish the team all the very best for the future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their unconditional support and love over the years,” he added.

Tendulkar, considered the most complete batsman in modern cricket and one who was considered next only to the legendary Sir Don Bradman, retires from the ODI format at the top of the run-getters’ list.

Tendulkar goes out after amassing 18,426 runs in 463 one-dayers at an average of 44.83. The diminutive right-hander has an astonishing 49 hundreds in the format, including a double hundred — the first in this form of the game.

Tendulkar made his ODI debut against Pakistan way back in 1989 and interestingly he is quitting the scene just ahead of another series against the arch-rivals.

The Mumbaikar, who made himself unavailable for Twenty20 after playing just one game in 2006, will now remain active in only the Test arena.

The brightest moment of his ODI career came last year when he finally became part of a World Cup winning Indian team after five previous appearances.

Speculation over Tendulkar’s future had grown after his continuing failures in the past one year.

His last ODI hundred came in the Asia Cup in Bangladesh in March this year — a feat that completed an unprecedented 100 international tons.

He was stuck on 99 tons for quite a while after scoring two hundreds during India’s successful World Cup campaign.

Tendulkar also has an mammoth tally of 96 ODI 50s to his credit.

Despite the recent slump in his form, Tendulkar’s overall tally of runs is unlikely to be matched anytime soon given that the distant second-best in the list, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, has already retired from the game with 13,704 runs under his belt.

Sri Lanka’s retired great Sanath Jayasuriya occupies the third spot in the overall chart with 13,430 runs.

Besides his batting, Tendulkar was an effective partnership-breaking bowler and finishes his ODI career with 154 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls.

Tendulkar’s Test records are as awe-inspiring. The right-hander has 15,645 runs at an average of 54.32 in 194 Tests that he has played so far. The tally includes 51 hundreds and 66 half-centuries.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, Javed Miandad advices Pakistan players to control nerves and play natural game #IndvsPak

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 07:30 PM PST

Inzamam-ul-Haq, Javed Miandad advices Pakistan players to control nerves and play natural gamePakistan’s national team players on Saturday received some valuable tips from former skippers Inzamam-ul-Haq and Javed Miandad, who advised them to play their “natural game” and control the “nerves”, during the tour of India.

The team today arrived in New Delhi en route to their flight to Bangalore for the first bilateral series with India since 2007.

“I have told them to forget about technical issues when it comes to batting. Just go and play your natural game and shut out the pressures that come naturally with the big crowds in India,” Inzamam said.

Inzamam, who is Pakistan’s most capped player with 120 Tests and 378 One-day International appearances, worked with the players as batting consultant during a conditioning camp ahead of the tour.

Inzamam paid specific attention to the problems faced by flamboyant all-rounder, Shahid Afridi, who has scored two half centuries in the practice matches.

“Once you start feeling the pressure you start to struggle. That is the beauty of Indo-Pak cricket contests,” he said.

He recalled that when he went to India as captain in 2005 he told the players to relax and enjoy the game and the results were positive.

“I remember most of the batsmen got runs including myself, Younis (Khan) and (Mohammad) Yousuf.”

He said the pressure of playing in India can only be handled by working as a close knit unit.

“A tour to India is different from other tours. The expectations to win are very high from our own people and defeats and poor performances are not forgotten easily.”

This will be the first bilateral series between the two countries since the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.

Miandad, who played 124 Tests, said that the present Pakistan team didn’t have any outstanding talent as was the case in the past.

“The tour is significant from every angle. I have advised the players to stick together and enjoy the tour and play positively. We have a sent a good team and they should click, but people must remember that victory and defeat are part of the game,” he said.

Chief selector, Iqbal Qasim maintained that Afridi has every chance of being retained for the One-day series provided he does well in the T20 matches.

“I think his being dropped for the One-day series has been a wake-up call for him. It was not an easy decision to drop him because he is such a popular figure in Pakistan cricket.

“But already he is back in form and doing well and that is a good sign for us. If he does well we have told the team management they can request us to retain him for the ODI series.”

India vs Pakistan 2012: BCCI barred photo agencies from covering India-Pakistan series #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 06:30 PM PST

BCCI barred photo agencies from covering India-Pakistan seriesAfter the Test series against England, the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) has now barred international photo agencies from covering the much-awaited India-Pakistan limited overs series, starting December 25 in Bangalore.

The News Media Coalition (NMC), which champions freedom of the media, has condemned the BCCI’s high-handed attitude on the issue.

“The imminent Pakistan cricket tour of India promises to be a casualty of the ongoing international media dispute with the BCCI, the sport’s national governing body based in Mumbai,” Andrew Moger, Executive Director of NMC said in a statement.

“Now the high-profile Pakistan tour accompanied by the much-anticipated meeting between the Indian and Pakistani leaders will become embroiled in the press freedom dispute.

News organisations around the world are angry that the BCCI has locked out major suppliers of photographic news material.

“International news agencies, which decided not to report on the England Test series or provide any photographic coverage, are planning to avoid the story of the Pakistan cricket tour,” he said.

“It is regrettable that the politically-charged Pakistan tour will be affected by the BCCI’s failure to recognise the long-standing importance of photographic news agencies in the flow of sport and news images every day,” Moger added.
