Marlon Samuels guides West Indies to first win in the ODI series #BanvsWI

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 10:03 AM PST

Marlon Samuels smashed 126 after Sunil Narine took four wickets to guide West Indies to a four-wicket win over Bangladesh in the third one-day international on Wednesday, cutting the hosts’ lead to 2-1 in the five-match series.

West Indies reached 228 for 6 with three overs remaining at Shere Bangla National Stadium after Bangladesh was sent in to bat and were bowled out for 227 in the final over.

Samuels’ fourth ODI century included 17 boundaries and two sixes, and he smashed 24 runs in the 45th over from medium-pacer Rubel Hossain to ensure victory. Kieron Powell scored 47 to offer support for Samuels after opener Chris Gayle had been removed for 4 to prolong his poor run of form.

Samuels also perished to Mashrafe Mortaza, caught by Mahmudullah near the boundary.

In Bangladesh’s innings, Mahmudullah scored 52 and Mushfiqur Rahim made 38 as the home side struggled against a disciplined bowling performance by the visitors.

Narine claimed 4 for 37 from 10 overs to restrict Bangladesh’s scoring, while left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul took 2 for 40 and Darren Sammy captured 2 for 46.

Bangladesh recorded their biggest ever ODI win last weekend, beating West Indies by 160 runs. Narine removed openers Tamim Iqbal for 22 and Anamul Haque for 33. He also claimed the wickets of Naeem Islam for 4 and Mashrafe bin Mortaza for a duck. The fourth match is on Friday.

Sammy: ‘We knew how important was it to win this game, they played some real good cricket. Superb knock by Marlon, pleased with the bowling of Narine. He showed his really well today and showed how dangerous he could be. The batsmen need to carry on after getting a start. It was nice to see Powell doing that today.’

Rahim: ‘It was a difficult wicket. The settled batsmen got themselves out. Many guys chipped in, but we needed to click as a team. The bowlers bowled really well, but credit to the Windies.’

Gautam Gambhir banks on Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma’s reverse swing #IndvsEng

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 07:49 AM PST

James Anderson’s successful execution of reverse swing has made Indian opener Gautam Gambhir believe that his senior colleague Zaheer Khan will perform even better as he is a bigger exponent of the art.

Anderson got the ball to reverse consistently in the post tea session that saw England claiming three wickets to leave India tottering at 273 for seven at the end of day one of the third Test here.

“We have got Zaheer and Ishant who can reverse the ball really well. If they are on song, it’s going to be difficult for England as well,” said Gambhir after the first day’s play.

“Zaheer Khan is a master of reverse swing. If he gets going I think it would be worrying for England. Hopefully, Zaheer and Ishant can do the job for us and play a big role for India. This is a wicket which will have something for everyone. It has carry, and sometimes the ball remains up and down,” he added.

Praising Anderson (3 for 68), Gambhir said the English pacer was hiding the ball well as he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar with reverse swing.

“He didn’t give loose deliveries. It was reversing and he was hiding the shine as well. It really gets difficult when someone hides the ball as you’re not able to see the shine of the ball and don’t know which way it would go. Ultimately you have to play the ball late,” explained the opening batsman.

Gambhir said that the match is currently evenly poised and if India were able to post a total of 330 plus tomorrow, it could turn out to be a good contest.

“I think we have lost two wickets more. The way Ashwin was batting, we could have continued a bit more. But it’s part and parcel of the game. It was an even day… can’t really say it can go England’s way. If we can put 330-350 on the board it would be a good contest,” he said.

Gambhir conceded that Virender Sehwag’s run out for 23 was disappointing from the team’s point of view.

“I thought that was not a situation for a third run. The ball was in his hand and I thought it would be risky going for a third. But after watching replay I thought there was a third run. We lost an important player. He was hitting the ball well. If he could have continued and we had a bigger start, we would have been a different position.

“When that kind of a dismissal happens, it starts playing on your mind because you’ve done all the hard work putting 47 runs on the board and he was playing well. Things would have been different if he had continued playing. It’s disappointing from the team’s point of view,” he said.

Insisting that it was important for the players to convert their good starts, Gambhir said, “Unfortunately that’s missing. That happened in Mumbai and now here. Me and Sachin could have continued…we would have been in a much better position if one of us had got a hundred.

“But it’s just day one. Firstly, we have to put runs on the board and try put them under pressure.

“When you win the toss, 300 is first thing that comes on to your mind. I won’t say it’s a good total but a decent one. If we can get 300 and above and our bowlers bowl well, it’s going to be a good Test match.”

Asked about Tendulkar’s return to form, Gambhir said, “Every run is important. You play a team sport. I never discuss about individuals. I’ve always maintained it’s not about individuals. It’s about what team does. It’s about what we collectively put on board. It will not help if one gets 100 and the team ends up at 250-260. It’s a team sport.”

After a series leveling win at Mumbai, England will be looking to continue their domination. Indian spinners failing at home is a big set back and they really need to work around. Indian batting collapsed in the 2nd Innings which is another point of concern for Indian team. A lot of question is being raised on Sachin Tendulkar as well. England on the other hand will be looking to continue the momentum at Kolkata as well. With series wide open both team have equal opportunity to turn the series. James Anderson shines, India 273/7 at stumps on Day 1 of third Test #IndvsEng

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 05:01 AM PST

Sachin Tendulkar marked his return to form with a patient 76 but England claimed the honours on the opening day by reducing a jittery India to 273 for seven in the first innings of the third Test on Wednesday.

Scorecard | Day 1 Highlights 3rd Test

Tendulkar played a composed innings under pressure facing 155 balls and hitting 13 boundaries in the process. His partnership of 79 for the fifth wicket with Yuvraj Singh was the highlight of the Indian innings as most of the other top order batsman failed to capitalise on starts.

He missed a century when he was forced to edge one off seamer Jimmy Anderson and the catch was taken by wicketkeeper Matt Prior diving to his right.

Anderson got the ball to reverse consistently in the post tea session which saw England get three wickets after getting two each in the first couple of sessions on a Eden Gardens track which appeared good for batting.

It was Tendulkar’s first half-century since the Sydney Test as he appeared relieved after getting to the mark with a boundary of pacer Steven Finn.

Electing to bat on flat wicket that had little to offer, India had a promising start from Gautam Gambhir (60) and Virender Sehwag (23).

But Gambhir could not convert his fine start for yet another time, while Virat Kohli’s poor form in the series continued as he could manage only six runs.

Anderson (3/68) rocked the home team at the fag end of the day with the second new ball. He bowled a perfect off-cutter that breached Ravichandran Ashwin’s defence.

At stumps, skipper Dhoni was unbeaten on 22 (from 59 balls) along with Zaheer Khan who was yet to open his account. This is the first time that floodlights were used in a Test match at the Eden with the last 40 minutes being played under artificial lights.

Sammy: ‘We will bowl. Looks like there is a bit of moisture on the surface. WE are confident about our abilities. We need to back our ability and excecute our plans.’

Rahim: I would have bowled first due to the dew factor. They are capable of coming back, but we are confident about our abilities. Abul misses out due to injury and Rubel comes in.’

Pitch Report: Similar sort of surface at Dhaka. It is very dry and should support the spinners as the match progresses.

Mohammad Yousuf ignored for Pakistan tour of India #IndvsPak

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 12:11 AM PST

Senior Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf’s Twenty20 and ODI career appears to be over after chief selector Iqbal Qasim made it clear that he would not be considered for the tour of India.

“Yousuf is not under consideration for the tour to India,” Qasim told reporters when asked about the selection process for the coming tour that includes two T20 matches and three one-day internationals.

“As far as Yousuf is concerned we are not sure about his form and fitness right now and he will not be considered for the Indian tour,” the former Test spinner said.

Yousuf has not played any first-class cricket since mid last year and was recently named to lead the Lahore Lions side in the ongoing national T20 championship.

But before the first match, Yousuf pulled out of captaincy in favour of Pakistan’s T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez and after the first game for Lahore, has not played in the next two matches.

Sources close to the former captain said he himself sees the writing on the wall and would now try to play in some first class matches before the tour to South Africa that begins from January 22.

Dhoni: Looks like a good wicket. The first hour will help the pacers, not ony today but everyday because it’s winter now. We have to wait and see how it behaves, can’t tell for sure how the pitch will behave on this soil. We had a good break and we’re fresh now. Ishant in place of Harbhajan is the only change.

Cook: We would have batted first as well but if we start well like how we did at Mumbai, we have a great chance. The morale is high after such a good win but that’s gone now. It’s a fresh start. Bell and Finn replace Bairstow and Broad.
