PCB appoints Inzamam-ul-Haq as batting coach for India tour #IndvsPak

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 09:15 AM PST

PCB appoints Inzamam-ul-Haq as batting coach for India tourFormer Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has been roped in as a batting consultant of the national cricket team for the upcoming tours of India and South Africa.

The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf told reporters today that since a decision is yet to be taken on who will be the permanent batting coach of Pakistan, Inzamam had been persuaded to share his experience and skills as a consultant.

“Inzamam will be working with the players, giving them tips and motivating them in the conditioning camps we are having for the series in India and then for the tour of South Africa,” Ashraf said.

He also added that given Inzamam’s standing in Pakistan cricket and his track record his presence should be a big motivating factor for the players as they prepare for the tour to India.

Inzamam, who played 129 Tests and 388 One-Day Internationals before retiring in 2007, has also expressed his interest in working as a batting coach but Ashraf clarified that the former skipper would not be accompanying the team abroad but would only work with the players in the camps.

He said the board had received some very good CVs for the position of batting coach and those were under consideration.

“We have taken no decision on whether to appoint a foreign or local batting coach,” Ashraf said.

Pakistan’s former batting greats like Inzamam, Zaheer Abbas and Salim Malik have all shown interest in the job apparently placing the board in an uncomfortable position as neither have done any coaching courses but their position in Pakistan cricket makes it difficult for the PCB to reject them.

Speaking about the Indian series, Ashraf said that the delegation that had gone to India for a inspection tour of the venues had come back satisfied.

“It should be a smooth tour with no security concerns and hopefully the matches will produce some very good cricket as everyone is looking forward to this first bilateral series between the two countries in five years,” said Ashraf.

Ashraf shot down a question about the omission of prominent allrounder, Shahid Afridi for the one-day series in India.

“The teams for the T20 and ODIs have been picked on merit and performances by the national selectors. To me every player in the team is a Shahid Afridi. I also personally enjoy his cricket but the selectors did what they felt was necessary to select a balanced and strong outfit.”

Ashraf also said that the board would be sending several VIP guests including former players, ministers, political party heads to India as the series was significant in many ways.

India vs England Day 1 Statictical Highlights 4th Test Nagpur 2012 #IndvsEng

India vs England Day 1 Statictical Highlights 4th Test Nagpur 2012Statistical highlights of the first day’s play of the fourth and final cricket Test between India and England.

# Jonathan Trott is averaging 24.90 against India as compared to his overall Test average of 47.91.

# Piyush Chawla, at Nagpur, is playing in his third Test — his last Test was against South Africa at Kanpur in April 2008.

# The leading wicket-taker in the series, Pragyan Ojha has failed to take a wicket on the first day of the Test.

Ojha, with 19 wickets at 27.68 runs apiece, is all set to become the first bowler to take 20 wickets in the current series.

# By facing 1192 balls, amassing 549 runs at an average of 91.50 in the present series, Cook has set a record for facing the most balls by an England batsman in a Test series in India.

# Cook has surpassed Dennis’ Amiss’ tally of 1176 balls in the five-Test series in 1976-77. Amiss had totalled 417 runs (ave. 52.12), including a hundred and two fifties.

# Ishant Sharma (2/32) has registered his best bowling figures in five Tests this year.

# Kevin Pietersen is the fourth batsman after Alastair Cook (1236), Michael Clarke (1358) and Hashim Amla (1064) to complete 1,000 runs in 2012, aggregating 1047 at an average of 45.52 in 14 Tests.

# This instance is the fourth when Pietersen has totalled 1,000 runs in a calendar year — the first three occasions being 2006, 2007 & 2008.

# Pietersen’s 29th fifty in Tests (73 off 188 balls) is his sixth against India. His strike rate of 38.82 is his second lowest when he has registered a 50-plus in an innings — his lowest strike rate being 38.63 while hitting 51 off 132 balls against the West Indies at St.John’s in 2008-09.

# Pietersen’s record against India is brilliant in Tests — 1575 runs (ave.60.57) in 16 Tests. He became the third batsman after Cook (549) and Pujara (412) to manage 300 runs or more in the current rubber – 332 at an average of 55.33 in four Tests.

Nagpur is most difficult wicket I have played on: Kevin Pietersen #IndvsEng

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 06:45 AM PST

Nagpur is most difficult wicket I have played on Kevin PietersenEngland batsman Kevin Pietersen said that the slow-paced pitch prepared for the fourth and final Test is the toughest he has played on as far as scoring runs in concerned.

“It’s toughest wicket I have played Test cricket on in terms of scoring runs. I don’t have a clue what the pitch will do later. Its playing pretty similar to what it did at the start of the day,” said Pietersen after the first day’s play on Thursday.

Pietersen, whose 73 in 198 minutes off 188 balls is the top score in the tourists’ end-of-day first innings score of 199 for five, said his team was in a reasonably good position but the runs doesn’t mean anything until the game is over.

“Like I said after the runs in Mumbai, it doesn’t mean absolutely nothing until the game is over.

“I think we are in an okay position. I don’t know what that pitch will do later but it’s slow. I think the key today was to try to bat as long as possible because I don’t think that wicket is getting any better,” said Pietersen.

The England batting stalwart sounded happy that his team had two seam bowlers to bowl on this pitch, as he thought it was very difficult to score runs off Ishant Sharma, the home team’s lone pacer in the playing XI.

“I think we are in a position of strength, if I am allowed to say that, as we have two seamers. I found Ishant incredibility difficult to play today,” said Pietersen.

Jadeja, on the other hand, had claimed that the Indian team’s strategy of playing four spinners, including himself as a frontline bowler, would pay dividends in the second England innings as they can use the bowlers’ footmarks to extract spin more and more.

Asked whether the pitch could be termed a good Test match wicket, with shot-making so difficult, Pietersen said he could understand the Indians’ thinking as they were keen to win this game to square the series 2-2.

“Obviously Indians think that’s the kind of wicket they have to prepare to take the series back. We have had incredible challenge in last 2-3 years as a team and this is another one. As for viewers, I don’t think they will have any interest in what I have to say as they must have switched off 4-5 hours ago!,” he said.

Pietersen praised Jadeja, who made his Test debut, and leg spinner Piyush Chawla, brought into the team as replacements for Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, respectively.

“They are good bowlers and good cricketers. If you look at the numbers, Jadeja has got incredible stats form this year’s Ranji…I saw them when I was waiting to bat. He has had a blinder of a year. Jadeja’s intensity in the field is good, Chawla as well.
“(But) for me, it’s a case of worrying about our dressing room,” he said.

Asked about the absence of Decision Review System in the series, Pietersen sidestepped the issue saying it was the Indian cricket board’s call.

“BCCI have their own reasons why they don’t want DRS. It has nothing to do with me or the England team,” he remarked.

Ishant and Pietersen sparkles, England 199/5 at stumps Day 1 of Nagpur Test #IndvsEng

Ishant and Pietersen sparkles, England 199-5 at stumps Day 1 of Nagpur TestKevin Pietersen led the way for England, playing an anchor’s innings on a flat and dry wicket as the visitors were 199/5 in 97 overs at the close of the first day’s play in the fourth and final cricket Test match against India at the VCA Stadium here Thursday.

At stumps, Matt Prior and debutant Joe Root were batting on 34 and 31, respectively, on a very slow day where England scored runs at a rate of 2.05 runs per over on a turning pitch.

Scorecard | Day 1 Highlights Nagpur Test

Earlier, disaster struck England, who elected to bat, as pacer Ishant Sharma clicked for India in the morning session clinching both the openers.

Playing in his fourth Test, Nick Compton (3) poked a good length ball by Sharma that rose and the delivery went to wicketkeeper and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had to stoop low to take the catch on the second ball of the fifth over, giving the hosts their first success of the day.

In-form batsman and England skipper Alastair Cook (1) was rather unlucky to get out leg before wicket. On a delivery, angling away from the off-stump, the ball struck Cook’s pads to which Indians appealed and the finger was raised by Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharamsena.

Replays, however, showed that the ball was hitting him outside the line of the stumps.

From 16/2, Jonathan Trott (44) and Pietersen (73) struck a 86-run partnership to take England out from a spot of bother. Trott and Pietersen hit seven and 10 boundaries, respectively, in their innings before the former was bowled by another debutant Ravindra Jadeja in the 50th over.

Ian Bell (1) also fell soon after as he was lured into a drive by leg-spinner Piyush Chawla and was caught at short cover by Virat Kohli.

Pietersen was the last wicket of the day after which Root and Prior held the innings together for the next 30 overs and scored another 60 runs.

Faf du Plessis to lead South Africa in T20s against New Zealand #SAvsNZ

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 04:30 AM PST

Faf du Plessis to lead South Africa in T20s against New ZealandFaf du Plessis will lead South Africa in the three-match Twenty20 series against New Zealand later this month to free regular limited overs skipper AB de Villiers from the burden of captaincy, the cricket board said on Thursday.

De Villiers remained part of the 15-member squad, which includes four uncapped players, for the Twenty20 matches in Durban (Dec. 21), East London (Dec. 23) and Port Elizabeth (Dec. 26).

“AB de Villiers remains our first-choice captain in this format,” selection convener Andrew Hudson said in a statement.

“But AB is one of the players we need to rotate in the interest of his workload across all three formats and we want to have one captain for the entire series,” he added.

For the two-test series against the Kiwis starting on Jan. 2, South Africa stuck with the same squad which beat Australia earlier this month to retain the number one ranking.

Opener Henry Davids of the Titans and the Lions duo of stumper-batsman Quinton de Kock and left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso were among the new faces in the Twenty20 side.

Lions all-rounder Chris Morris played for the Proteas in a Twenty20 series in Zimbabwe in July but the games were unofficial so he too would fancy winning his first official cap.

“We could not consider JP Duminy, Colin Ingram and Albie Morkel because of injury while we decided to rest Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla,” Hudson said.

Johan Botha was not considered due to his commitments in Australia.

Twenty20 squad: Faf du Plessis (captain), Farhaan Berhadien, Henry Davids, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, Rory Kleinveldt, Richard Levi, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Aaron Phangiso, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Test squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Jacques Kallis, Rory Kleinveldt, Morne Morkel, Alviro Peterson, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Jacques Rudolph, Dale Steyn.

Dhoni is still the right choice as captain: Wasim Akram #IndvsEng

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 04:00 AM PST

Dhoni is still the right choice as captain Wasim AkramFormer Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram feels that MS Dhoni should continue as the India captain but he should be more flexible in his tactics.

“I am positive that Dhoni is the right choice to remain as captain, but he has to be more flexible in his tactics. You cannot throw the ball to a novice like Ravichandran Ashwin, like Dhoni did in Kolkata, and expect him to produce miracles,” said Dhoni.

“If the team management feels that a policy of split-captaincy would release the pressure on Dhoni, then maybe there is a need for change. But personally I would still have Dhoni over next-in-line Virat Kohli, who is too young to lead Team India.”

Akram feels that India and Dhoni are lacking an alternative plan when they run into tough situations.

“India and Dhoni, in particular, are lacking a Plan B when situations get tough, where they have seemed content in containing rather than attacking,” Akram wrote in his column on ESPNStar.com.

Akram also feels that Indian selectors have taken the right choice by dropping senior pacer Zaheer Khan from the fourth Test against England.

“The on-going transition within the Indian squad has seen pace spearhead Zaheer Khan axed from the side after picking up just four wickets in three Tests versus England so far. Despite skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni publicly backing Zaheer, saying he was bowling in the right areas, it has been his alarming lack of pace that has left the English batsmen untroubled.

“It seems to me that Zaheer’s main problem stems from his fitness levels. His run-up is slow and lethargic while his follow-through is almost non-existent. Zaheer’s stock delivery is the reverse-swinging one, but for it to be effective he will have to run-in a lot faster. He is 34 years old and not getting any younger,” he said.

Akram also had words of praise for the English side, especially their captain Alastair Cook.

“Their skipper Alastair Cook has led from the front, showing tremendous temperament at the Test level, that someone like Kohli should learn from. Credit must also be given to their bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed whose tips have helped English bowlers make optimum use of the SG ball, especially when it comes to reverse-swing. The chips are seemingly down for the Indian side, with England favourites heading into Nagpur,” he said.

Preview: Australia vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Hobart, 14-18 Dec 2012 #AusvsSL

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 11:45 PM PST

Preview Australia vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Hobart, 14-18 Dec 2012Sri Lanka are putting their faith in the remnants of their “golden generation” as they target their first ever Test win in Australia in the three-match series starting on Friday.

Thirty-somethings Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thilan Samaraweera, who form the core of Sri Lanka’s batting, are shaping as Sri Lanka’s best chance of breaking their 10-Test, 25-year winless record.

Sangakkara, 35, the international cricketer of the year, would not be drawn on whether this will be his last trip to Australia, but he said an elusive Test win was a prime motivator for the team elders.

“When you do get older, you do look for achievements where you haven’t really tasted victory so, here and in India, (there are) Test matches still to win,” Sangakkara said in Hobart.

“That’s a great motivator for guys like Dilshan, Mahela, myself and Samaraweera. “We’re the older brigade. But whether we get it or not, the key is to really contribute to the side.”

Since being hammered in their first Test in Australia in early 1988, Sri Lanka have lost another seven matches and drawn two, most recently in Cairns in 2004. They have also never won a Test in India.

Sri Lanka’s hopes appear to rest on their batsmen providing enough runs to upset Michael Clarke’s Australia, the world number three Test side, who are embarking on their first series since the retirement of Ricky Ponting.

Their bowling has been hit by the Test retirements of Lasith Malinga, Chaminda Vaas and the 800-wicket Muttiah Muralitharan. Unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis, with 62 wickets from 16 Tests, was passed over for the tour.

Dilshan, 36, admits he is unlikely to have another chance to win a Test in Australia and acknowledges time is running out for him and his team-mates.

“Definitely. For me I think this is my last tour (in Australia) in Test cricket. This is a real challenge for everyone,” he said.

“We’ve never won a Test match here. If we can win a Test match it’s great for the team and the country.

“It’s never easy when you’re playing Australia because the conditions are different. But we’re looking forward to a great run with them in this series.”

Much of Sri Lanka’s hopes are pinned on the batting of veteran trio Jayawardene, Sangakkara and opener Dilshan, who urged the top order to make runs or risk being whitewashed in the series.

“Definitely in the top order someone has to put their hands up and put some big runs on the board, to help the middle order and the tailenders,” the opener said.

“That’s our target. The top order should make some runs this series. It’s really important that Mahela and Sanga come into form. They’re two experienced guys in the side.”

However, Sri Lanka’s lead-in form does not augur well with just four victories in their last 20 Tests. Their last away series win was in Bangladesh in 2008, and their current Test ranking is a lowly sixth.

Australia are coming off a 309-run drubbing by world number one South Africa this month, and Hobart will be the first chance for their new-look batting line-up after the record-breaking Ponting retired with 13,378 Test runs.

Phil Hughes returns to the Australian squad at the ground where he was dropped after their shock loss to New Zealand a year ago, with a likely role at number three instead of opening the innings.

“This is the ground where things probably didn’t pan out perfectly on a personal note,” Hughes said this week. “Twelve months down the track, I feel like I’m in a better place now.”

All-rounder Shane Watson has said he will be given the first opportunity to fill Ponting’s vacancy in the batting order at number four against Sri Lanka.

“(Coach) Mickey Arthur talked to me at the end of the last (Perth) Test to say the way it was looking, they were going to move me down to four,” Watson told reporters.

The series continues in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground followed by Sydney, starting on January 3.

Teams:

Australia (Probable): Ed Cowan, David Warner, Phil Jacques, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (c), Matthew Wade (wk), Michael Hussey, John Hastings, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon.

Sri Lanka (Probable): Tharanga Paranavitana, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene (c), Thilan Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Dhammika Prasad, Shaminda Eranga.

Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle returns, Johnson dropped for first test against Sri Lanka #SLvsAus

Posted: 12 Dec 2012 11:15 PM PST

Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle returns, Johnson dropped for first test against Sri LankaPaceman Mitchell Johnson has been left out of the Australian team for Friday’s opening Test against Sri Lanka with Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle returning to bolster the side.

The 31-year-old left-armer, who has 196 wickets in 48 Tests, missed out despite taking six wickets against South Africa in Perth last week.

Australia go into the series opener against Sri Lanka in Hobart with a three-prong pace attack of Hilfenhaus, Siddle and left-armer Mitchell Starc, supplemented by Shane Watson’s swing and spinner Nathan Lyon.

Recalled Phil Hughes will bat at number three with Watson at four while skipper Michael Clarke and veteran Mike Hussey stay at five and six in the first Test match since the retirement of Ricky Ponting.

“Mitchell Johnson will be 12th man tomorrow,” Clarke said Thursday.

“Obviously, it was a tough decision, trying to cut 12 down to 11 and especially the way Johnson played in Perth, but for this Test match this is the 11 we have selected.

“Mitchell Starc has been in the queue for a while now and I thought he came in and did a good job in Perth,” he said.

“Mitchell Johnson bowled very well in Perth but we’ve gone for this attack in this Test match in these conditions against the opposition we’re playing,” he added.

Questioned whether the demotion would dent Johnson’s confidence after only returning to the Test side in Perth after a 12-month absence, Clarke said: “Mitchell will be fine, he’ll work hard and wait for another opportunity and try to grab it with both hands.”

He added that Starc had earned his place.

“The reason that Starc is there is because he’s been next in line in the queue for a while,” he said.

“He’s performed really well in the shorter form of the game for Australia. He got one Test in Perth and got six-for (6-154 in the South Africa second innings) and 68 not out with the bat so that’s not a bad start as well.”

Australia - David Warner, Ed Cowan, Phil Hughes, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (c), Mike Hussey, Matthew Wade (wk), Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Ben Hilfenhaus, Nathan Lyon. Mitchell Johnson (12th man)

Mahela Jayawardene to step down as Sri Lanka skipper after Australia tour #SLvsAus

Mahela Jayawardene to step down as Sri Lanka skipper after Australia tourMahela Jayawardene says he will give up the captaincy after Sri Lanka’s current Test and one-day tour of Australia, with Angelo Mathews seen as his likely replacement.

The 35-year-old said it was time for a younger leader and nominated Mathews, his vice-captain, as ideal to assume the role.

Jayawardene’s second stint as captain began in January, when he was called in to replace Tillakaratne Dilshan and he committed to a 12-month tenure, which expires at the end of the current tour.

“I took over the captaincy for 12 months and that ends after this series,” said Jayawardene, who is lining up for his 136th Test against Australia in Hobart on Friday.

“I don’t want to continue captaining Sri Lanka after this tour so this will be my last. I hope I don’t get any SOS calls later on.

“We need to move on to a younger leader and it’s much easier for Sri Lankan cricket if we get a new guy in while the senior players are still around so we can help him out.”

“The selectors are quite happy in going in that direction,” he added.

Jayawardene, who has scored 10,640 Test runs at 50.18, said Mathews, at 25, was the obvious choice to replace him as captain.

“Angelo is the one everyone has earmarked for the job and I think he’s good enough,” he said.

“If Angelo gets the opportunity it’ll be much easier in the transition because he’ll have Kumar Sangakkara, Dilshan and myself around him in tough situations so we can build him through that period and after that he’ll be on his own.

“I think this is the right time. We don’t have much cricket next year, not many big tours, so it will be a nice easy start for Angelo if he takes over.”

Toss: England have won the toss and elected to ba

Cook: ‘We’ve played really well. We have to continue that. It’s going to be a lot of hard work. We have to forget the last 2 Tests and concentrate on this Test. Finn is out. Bresnan replaces him. Root replaces Samit.’

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: ‘We won the last 3 tosses but lost the last 2 games. In the last few years, we have done well when we are pushed to the corner. We were looking to bat first. Looks a decent surface – it’ll slow down as the game goes and there will be some reverse swing as well. Piyush Chawla and Ravindra Jadeja come in place of Zaheer and Yuvraj.’
