West Indies crush Bangladesh by 75 runs in 4th ODI to level series #BanvsWI

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 10:15 AM PST

Darren Sammy hit a fighting half-century and then grabbed three early wickets to help the West Indies beat Bangladesh by 75 runs in the fourth one-day international in Dhaka on Friday.

Scorecard | 4th ODI Highlights Ban vs WI

The 28-year-old scored an unbeaten 60 to take the tourists, after they were put into bat, to 211-9, and his impressive bowling was central to an attack that saw the home team out for 136 in 34.1 overs at Shere Bangla stadium.

The victory meant the five-match series is now level at 2-2, setting up a high-stakes final showdown on Saturday.

Sammy rocked the home team by dismissing Anamul Haque (one) with the fourth delivery of the second over and then had Naeem Islam (nought) caught out on the next ball to leave the home team reeling at 3-2.

Pace partner Kemar Roach (2-29) then struck further blows on the home team by bowling Tamim Iqbal (one) and Nasir Hossain (two) in the third over.

Sammy then piled on the pain, taking the wicket of Mominul Haque (one) in the sixth over to leave the hosts at 13-5.

Mohammad Mahmudullah, who remained unbeaten on 56, added an invaluable 74 runs for the sixth wicket with skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (27) but once the partnership was broken by Sunil Narine all was lost for the home team.

Mahmudullah hit seven boundaries in his fighting 78-ball stay at the crease. Veerasammy Permaul and Dwayne Smith also chipped in with two wickets apiece.

Earlier, Bangladeshi spinners Mahmudullah (3-46), Elias Sunny (2-21) and Abdur Razzak (2-47) derailed the West Indian innings in the middle overs after the tourists were cruising along well at 71-1.

Dashing West Indian opener Chris Gayle once again failed, dismissed for 16 after he looked set for a big score when he hit paceman Mashrafe Mortaza for a six and four in the sixth over.

He fell in the same over, caught by Sohag Gazi.

Kieran Powell (26) and Marlon Samuels (27) took the score to 71 when the Bangladeshi spinners struck thrice in as many overs, with Sunny taking wickets of both the batsmen in his successive overs.

Off-spinner Mahmudullah then took over, dismissing Kieron Pollard (two), Devon Thomas (10) and Permaul (one) to derail the West Indies.

In between these three wickets, Sammy and Bravo added an invaluable 43 for the seventh wicket.

Bangladesh won the first two matches by seven wickets and 160 runs respectively — both in Khulna — while the West Indies clinched the third in Dhaka by four wickets.

# Jonathan Trott and Alastair Cook have added 173 for the second wicket – England’s highest for any wicket at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

# The above stand is England’s second highest for the second wicket against India on Indian soil, behind the 241 between Graeme Fowler and Mike Gatting at Chennai in 1985.

# With 165 for the first wicket by Nick Compton and Cook, England have provided the third instance when they shared 150-plus partnerships for the first and second wicket in the same innings against India. Their first two occasions were – 157 for the first and 211 for the second at Birmingham in 1974 and 178 for the first and 241 for the second in the 1984-85 Chennai Test.

# Besides three instances against India, the only other occasion for such an happening for England in Tests being 188 for the first and 329 (unbroken) for the second against Australia in the 2010-11 Brisbane Test.

# Ravichandran Ashwin’s tally of 183 runs is his second instance when he has conceded 175 runs or more in a Test innings. In the 2011-12 Adelaide Test, he had conceded 194 (53-6-194-3) in Australia’s total of 604 for seven wickets declared.

# Ashwin, for the third time in a Test innings, has delivered 50 or more overs in an innings – once each against Australia, England and West Indies.

# Ashwin is the first Indian bowler to concede 175 runs or more in a Test innings at Eden Gardens.

# Jonathan Trott (87) has recorded his first half-century in the present series.

# England (509/6) have recorded their first total of 500 at Eden Gardens. Besides England, only West Indies have registered 500-plus against India at this venue – 614/5d in 1958-59 and 530/5d in 1987-88.

# Cook faced 1160 deliveries in the present series – the third highest by an England player in a Test series against India in India. # Cook’s brilliant 190 off 377 balls is his third highest innings in Tests – his highest two knocks being 294 against India at Edgbaston in 2011 and 235 not out against Australia at Brisbane in 2010-11.

# Cook has registered two sixes in a Test innings for the second time. Against Bangladesh at Chittagong in March 2010, during his innings of 173 off 283 balls, he had recorded two sixes. For the first time in Test cricket, Cook was run-out.

# Cook took his runs’ tally to 1234 (ave.53.65) in 14 Tests this year – the second most run-aggregate, next only to Michael Clarke’s 1358 (ave.104.46) in nine Tests.

# Cook’s captain’s knock of 190 is the second highest by a visiting batsman at Eden Gardens, next only to Rohan Kanhai’s 256 for the West Indies in 1958-59. # Cook’s above aggregate is the third highest by an England player against India on Indian soil – the best two being Ken Barrington’s 594 (ave.99.00) in five Tests in 1961-62 and Mike Gatting’s 575 (ave.95.83) in five Tests in 1984-85.

# In seven Tests on Indian soil, Cook has averaged 77.36 – 851 runs, including four hundreds and three fifties.

Indian batsman will manage to save the Kolkata test against England: Pragyan Ojha #IndvsEng

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 07:55 AM PST

Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha on Friday said that there’s not much help from the 22-yard strip at the Eden Gardens and the Indian batsmen will be able to eke out a draw under current circumstances.

“I think the pitch wasn’t doing much. It was a straight wicket and the outfield is very fast. The batsmen don’t have to do much,” the left-arm spinner said at the post-match conference.

About their chances of a return in the Test, he put up a brave face.

“Our guys are quite confident of saving the match. We have a good record on this ground. The way the wicket is playing, I’m quite confident that we would do well. The first session is very important. If we get early one or two England wickets, then the the tail would open out. It’s a very good batting wicket though.”

Ojha conceded that after a certain point of time, he stopped attacking and concentrated on the flow of runs.

“I had to bowl to my field without giving them easy runs.

Yesterday, I was trying a bit more for early wickets. Then I spoke to myself that I should not be giving easy runs. It’s not about getting defensive. It’s just about not giving easy boundary balls.”

He tried to defend the shoddy show by Ravichandran Ashwin.

“We are putting tremendous effort. Myself and Ashwin are trying very hard.”

Bowling coach Joe Dawes’ role has often come under scanner but the youngster said that the Queenslander’s inputs have been useful.

“Joe always keeps working with us. He talks about the angles and variation with the crease. He’s good enough He’s got some knowledge.”

Moin Khan, Inzamam-ul-Haq slams MS Dhoni’s behavior towards Aleem Dar #IndvsEng

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 06:00 AM PST

Pakistan’s former captains Moin Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq have criticised Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for arguing with umpire Aleem Dar during the ongoing Test series against England, saying his behaviour was “unacceptable” and the ICC should have taken him to task.

“I am not at all surprised that the ICC has not reacted to the way Dhoni engaged in an argument with Aleem Dar during the series as the ICC can’t afford to upset the powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),” Moin said.

“…the way Dhoni questioned Aleem Dar’s umpiring and argued with him it is unacceptable,” he added.

Moin said since the BCCI was financially very strong and influential in world cricket, the ICC did not reprimand Dhoni.

Dar was also criticised by former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne in one of his tweets and described as a poor umpire for a bad decision he gave during the series.

Dar has reacted to Warne’s tweet by telling a Pakistani channel that he was doing his job and Warne was doing his in his new role as a television commentator.

Moin said the ICC needs to ensure that a uniform set of rules applied for all Test nations.

“Dhoni has in the past also argued with umpires and got away with it,” he noted.

Inzamam advised the Indian captain to stop blaming the umpiring for his team’s struggling form in the ongoing series.

“I think Dhoni is a very experienced captain and player and he needs to focus on areas where his team is going wrong against England. He needs to speak to his players about their weak points in the series,” Inzamam said.

The former batsman said that if the ICC had a clear policy on the matter, it must be followed rigorously for all captains.

“I myself have been penalised for questioning umpires decisions and here Dhoni did it openly and argued with Dar and yet no punitive action has been taken against him.”

The former captain credited his teammate and former leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmad for playing a key role in England’s reversal of form in India.

“I think Mushie has a big role to play in the way the English spinners have bowled in the Tests and the way the visiting batsmen are tackling the Indian slow bowlers. Mushie has worked for a long time with the English team as their spin consultant and now this move is paying dividends for the England team,” he said.

Inzamam believed that the present England team had learnt from their drubbing at the hands of Pakistan earlier this year in the United Arab Emirates.

“They have improved their skills against the spinners and on these pitches they believe they can win the series.”

Shane Watson to bat at Ricky Ponting’s spot in tests

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 05:30 AM PST

Shane Watson said on Friday he will be given the first chance to fill the vacancy in Australia’s batting order left by Ricky Ponting’s retirement and bat at number four in next week’s first Test against Sri Lanka.

Recalled Phillip Hughes is expected to bat at first drop in a re-jigged Australian top order for the Hobart Test, starting next Friday.

On the same day skipper Michael Clarke, speaking to reporters in Sydney, suggested the Test batting line-up was still undecided, vice-captain Watson confirmed in Brisbane that he would drop down one spot to number four in the Australian order.

“(Coach) Mickey Arthur talked to me at the end of the last Test to say the way it was looking, they were going to move me down to four,” Watson told reporters.

“It’s taken me a few days to get my head around that, but it means I can bowl a few more overs.

“In the last Test match, I know Michael (Clarke) in the second innings was a bit hesitant to bowl me a few times towards the latter part of their innings, just to give me the chance to be as fresh as I could going into bat.

“The ultimate is to be able to contribute with both bat and ball throughout the whole Test match and not be held back.

“Batting at four will give me that extra time to freshen up.”

In contrast, Clarke said the top order had yet to be finalised and that he was open to a move up the order.

“I’ll speak to Mickey Arthur about that when we get into camp in Hobart,” Clarke said.

“As for where I bat, the number I bat doesn’t bother me. It’s about fitting in with what’s best for the team.”

Hard-hitting batsman David Warner, one of four openers in Australia’s new-look top six, said moving Watson to number four would be the optimal outcome for the Test side.

“As Shane said, (it would be great) if we can get the most out of him bowling. It’s going to be fantastic for him to get that little extra rest,” Warner said.

“Me and Ed (Cowan) are in a good space at the moment. They’ve told us where we’re at,” the 26-year-old added when asked whether Arthur had assured him Australia’s opening partnership won’t change.

“We always look forward to batting with each other, and we’re playing down in Hobart which is Ed’s home ground.”

England dominate on Day 3 of Kolkata Test, leads by 193 against India #IndvsEng

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 04:47 AM PST

Captain Alastair Cook continued to torment India with a monumental knock of 190 as England put themselves in the driver’s seat by taking a mammoth 193 runs first innings lead in the third Test on Friday.

Scorecard | Day 3 Highlights 3rd Test

Cook produced another magnificent effort before was run-out in a freak manner while Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen also made significant contributions with scores of 87 and 54 respectively with England reaching a massive 509 for six at the end of the third day’s play.

At stumps, Matt Prior on 40 and Graeme Swann on 21 had added 56 runs for the undefeated seventh wicket partnership to compound India’s misery.

On yet another frustrating day for Indian bowlers, Pragyan Ojha was the leading wicket-taker with his 3/140, while Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin managed a wicket each as senior most pacer Zaheer Khan bowled 29 wicketless overs.

Cook’s marathon effort spanned over eight hours and 12 minutes and he added 173 runs with Trott for the second wicket after being involved in a 165-run opening wicket stand with Nick Compton.

Resuming the day at 216 for one, England slowly built on their lead as the day progressed while Cook’s master class century brought the best from Trott who signalled his return to form with a responsible knock after two ducks in the first two Tests.

With two days left in the match, England seem to be in a position from where they can push for a 2-1 lead in the four-match series. The Indians, on the other hand, will have to bat out of their skins in the second innings to save the game.

The inept Indian bowling and equally poor fielding did not help the cause as England gained heavily.

In their pursuit for an unassailable 2-1 lead, England remained in course for a big lead with two more days to go in the third Test at Eden where India never lost a Test since 1999.

Cook was dropped by Ishant Sharma off his own bowling when the English skipper was on 156 as the Indians appeared clueless throughout day. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni didn’t show any pro-active approach and none of his plans seemed to click.

Cook, who on Thursday became the leading English centurion with 23 tons, got the second reprieve when he offered the simplest of return catch failing to check his shot.

Sharma tried to latch onto it on his follow-through but ultimately dropped a dolly and was finding it hard to believe.

Cook had no trouble negotiating the Indian bowlers otherwise as he notched up his seventh 150 plus score in Tests clobbering Zaheer through mid-wicket.

The in-form English skipper also went past 500 runs in the series, only the third Englishman to do so in a series in India after Ken Barrington and Mike Gatting.

Throughout his fluent innings, Cook also ensured an out-of-form Trott reach his 13th Test half-century.

For the Indians, the lack of enthusiasm and team spirit was clearly evident from their body language.

As he was approaching his third double century, Cook slowed down a bit while India kept attacking Pietersen at the other end.

India finally brought an end to the England skipper’s marathon innings when Cook was run out in a freakish way by a direct throw from Virat Kohli just before the tea-break.

Brendon McCullum replaces Ross Taylor as New Zealand Skipper

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 12:45 AM PST

Ousted New Zealand cricket captain Ross Taylor said on Friday he was distressed at being axed in favour of Brendon McCullum and needed a break from the game after a “very challenging” time.

After a week of intense speculation about Taylor’s future, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed the 28-year-old batsman had been dumped as skipper and would sit out the upcoming tour of South Africa.

“It was felt that the workload for a young captain was a lot,” NZC chief executive David White told reporters, adding that Taylor rejected an offer to remain Test captain while handing limited overs duties to McCullum.

Despite presiding over a string of poor results, Taylor remains New Zealand’s best batsman, averaging 43.45, and his absence from the Test squad for South Africa further weakens a side missing injured spinner Daniel Vettori.

Taylor said coach Mike Hesson told him he was no longer wanted as captain before last month’s two-Test series in Sri Lanka, where the Black Caps fought back for a creditable 1-1 draw after losing heavily in the first Test.

“Obviously, the news and the timing was distressing,” he said in a statement. “It has been a very challenging and pressured time and I don’t believe I can give 100 percent to the game at this time.”

Taylor, who White said could play in a home series against England in February, did not rule out an international comeback under McCullum.

“I am determined to contribute to the Black Caps team in the future and help whoever is in charge to win,” he said.

Opener McCullum, 31, is widely seen as offering more attacking tactical nous than the conservative Taylor.

Hesson defended his treatment of Taylor over the captaincy, saying “there’s no good time to deliver news like that” but conceded “it’s been a very unfortunate week… and not the result anyone wanted”.

The handling of the issue has sparked fury in New Zealand cricketing circles, with batsman Jesse Ryder tweeting that it “angers me watching Ross Taylor getting dumped on”.

Retired allrounder Scott Styris also took to the micro-blogging site saying “any goodwill/public support from fans and supporters towards the Black Caps after their brilliant win in SL (Sri Lanka) has now gone!”

TVNZ reported on Thursday that batting great Martin Crowe resigned from his post as NZC talent scout in protest at the organisation’s actions.

Fairfax Media columnist Ben Stanley wrote after Friday’s announcement that the episode had been “an absolutely appallingly executed operation by a national sporting body and its board”.

Stanley added that the South Africa tour beginning later this month, which pits eighth-placed Test nation New Zealand against the top-ranked Proteas, was now “looming as a potential massacre”.

New Zealand lost seven of 13 Tests under Taylor’s captaincy, winning four and drawing two.

Two of the wins were against lowly Zimbabwe, with the highlights of his tenure a rare Test victory over Australia in Hobart in December last year and the series-levelling second Test victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo last month.

Over the same period, the Black Caps have lost one-day series to South Africa, the West Indies and Sri Lanka, with their sole series win against Zimbabwe.

Test squad for South Africa tour: Brendon McCullum (c), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Daniel Flynn, James Franklin, Peter Fulton, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Bruce Martin, Jeetan Patel, Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling.

PCB chief Zaka Ashraf satisfied with security arrangement for India-Pakistan series #IndvsPak

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 12:22 AM PST

Satisfied by the security arrangements being put in place for the Pakistan cricket team in India, PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf said the much-anticipated series this month would also help improve the bilateral ties between the two countries.

“We are not worried about any security issues because we are certain that the Indian board and government will provide the best possible security for our players,” Ashraf said.

A PCB delegation, including a senior police official of the interior ministry, is currently in India visiting the venues of the two Twenty20 matches and three ODIs in December-January to inspect the security arrangements and coordinate other issues with the Indian authorities.

Ashraf said he was confident that the players would be able to focus totally on their cricket and give good results despite the threats being reported in the media.

“I don’t see this series as just a cricket series I see this series as something bigger. I would like it to eventually help improve relations between the two countries,” Ashraf said.

“I want to see not only regular bilateral cricket relations with India but also better relations on other levels as well,” he added.

The PCB chief was also quietly confident that eventually efforts being made to convince other boards to send their teams to Pakistan would pay off.

“I don’t want to take names but we are presently in talks with two or three boards trying to convince them it is safe for them to send their teams to Pakistan for a proper international series,” he stated.

Ashraf said even the ICC was keen to see international cricket return to Pakistan.
