Preview: Bangladesh vs West Indies, 3rd ODI, Dhaka, 05 Dec 2012 #BanvsWI

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST

After winning the first two one-dayers comprehensively, hosts Bangladesh will be hoping to wrap up the series when they take on West Indies in the third ODI at Mirpur on Wednesday.

By all means, the one-day series has been a disappointment for the visitors and West Indies would be hoping to fightback at Mirpur to stay alive in the five-match series.

On the other hand, Bangladesh are on a dream run and playing some brilliant cricket. They will surely hope to carry the momentum. The bowlers have managed to keep the West Indian batsmen including Chris Gayle at bay. The emergence of four newcomers in the side have also helped them alot. Opener and newcomer, Anamul Haque was the difference between the two sides in the last ODI as he despatched West Indies bowlers all across the park and also notched up his maiden century in his debut series.

Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim has also shown good form so far as he played a match winning knock in the first ODI and Bangladesh will be hoping that once again their batting click as a unit at Mirpur. In the bowling department, Rubel Hossain and Shafiul Islam are both capable seamers and have plenty of experience to trouble West Indies batsmen once again.

West Indies who were World Twenty20 winners a few months ago and have been in good from in Tests have struggled in the first two ODIs. Chris Gayle has failed to give them solid start and rest of the batting have also struggled. Windies dressing room will be hoping that swashbuckling opener finally finds his from on Thursday. Only bright thing for West Indies is Darren Barvo.

The Windies bowlers have also struggled so far with their ace spinner Sunil Narine not able to find his feet in the subcontinent conditions. Narine’s position is surely under threat, with Veerasammy Permaul’s spin offering more control.

Probable XIs
Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Anamul Haque, 3 Naeem Islam, 4 Nasir Hossain, 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim, 7 Mominul Haque, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Sohag Gazi, 10 Abdur Razzak, 11 Rubel Hossain/Shafiul Islam

West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Dwayne Smith, 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Devon Thomas, 9 Andre Russell, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Sunil Narine/Veerasammy Permaul

The inspection was a closed-door one and neither the PCB officials nor the TNCA officials were available for any comments.

MS Dhoni expects Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir to shine in Kolkata Test #IndvsEng

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 06:45 AM PST

Ahead of their crucial Test match against England at the Eden Gardens here, Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni Tuesday said he was hoping for a big contribution from his openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.

“We all know about the ability of our openers. If both of them can score in the same innings it will be a big plus for us. We don’t want to put extra pressure on them but back them for the game they are used to play,” Dhoni told mediapersons here on the eve of the match.

“The first innings in any Test match is very crucial as it sets up the game. We have seen the game change a lot in the last two days in India. So it is very important to be at par in the first two-three days and assess the pitch and the wear and tear it suffers,” he said.

Dhoni also said he was expecting young guns Cheteswar Pujara and Virat Kohli to come good in the game. With the team enjoying a week’s break following their humiliating ten-wicket loss in the second Test at Mumbai, Dhoni said it has helped the players recharge themselves.

“It has allowed the bowlers to get back to their best, while the batsmen had the time to reflect on what went wrong in the last game,” he said.

Describing the Eden crowd as “cricket lovers”, Dhoni said the game will witness a big crowd.

“The pitch here is good for stroke making, the outfield is quick and the cricket lovers will enjoy the game. People of Kolkata are cricket lovers and I am looking forward to a big crowd here,” added Dhoni.

The four-match Test series is currently tied at one win each.

With the four-Test series levelled at 1-1 after India’s ploy to prepare a turning track backfired in Mumbai, the hosts will seek to bounce back as they go into the third cricket Test against England here tomorrow with intense pressure on their under-performing star players to deliver before its too late.

After India’s humiliating loss in the second Test, the build-up to the Eden match was marked by a pitch row that began with a desperate Dhoni insisting for a rank-turner, which led to the local curator Prabir Mukherjee calling the Indian skipper “immoral and unethical”.

To resolve the matter, the BCCI sent East Zone curator Ashish Bhowmick to “assist” Mukherjee. The pitch for the match has drawn a lot more attention because of the controversy and it remains to be seen whether the hosts can put everything behind them and focus on the game.

India have never lost a series to England since 1984-85 when David Gower’s team had returned home with a 2-1 win but over the last one year Dhoni and Co. have lost much ground beneath their feet as they have slipped to number 5 in the world rankings from being number one at one stage.

While India’s pride will be up for stake, England would look to prove that they are not inept against spin and can win a series on Indian soil as well.

Aided by skipper Alastair Cook’s super show with two centuries from two Tests, and the most-destructive Kevin Pietersen showing in the last Test what he is capable of, England had buried India at their own den at the Wankhede, sealing a 10-wicket.

On a pitch that turned from ball one, England showed great resilience to bounce back after their first Test defeat in Ahmedabad, while Indians struggled in all the departments of the game.

The three-pronged spin attack did not yield desired results and in batting department, barring Cheteshwar Pujara, all big names failed miserably.

The opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir’s inconsistency combined with Sachin Tendulkar’s prolonged slump form — 153 runs from last 10 innings – has not done India any good.

However, Tendulkar has managed to remain unmoved by the critics and instead chose to slog at the nets for hours. A century here will certainly change things for him as well as for the team.

Even Virat Kohli has been unusually quiet in this series so far. Despite having a great year, he hasn’t scored a big knock in the last four innings.

India would hope that the promising right-hander comes out of his recent slump sooner than later. Kohli can take heart from 107-odd runs he had scored against Sri Lanka in a 2009 One-dayer here.

India’s bowling had also came a cropper in last the two Tests.

The spin department led by veteran Harbhajan Singh completely flopped. Harbhajan himself looked a shade of his past, while the duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha seemed pedestrian as compared to England’s Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann, both of whom shared 19 of 20 wickets on offer.

Pacer Zaheer Khan seemed to have lacked match fitness as he not only failed to pick a wicket, but also could not use the reverse swing.

Harbhajan, who is eyeing 100th Test cap, has been the most destructive Indian bowler at Eden Gardens with 46 wickets (including six five-wicket hauls) from seven Tests at 21.76.

But he is down with flu and it looks unlikely that he will be in the playing eleven tomorrow since the team management may opt for two seamers and two spinners.

It will be a tricky situation for Dhoni to chose the bowling combination, especially after drawing severe criticism for his selection of three spinners and a pacer at Wankhede.

Englishmen’s frailty for the away going deliveries means that Ojha, in all likelihood, would make the cut, while Ashwin is likely to retain his place.

Local lad Ashok Dinda may be hoping to earn his maiden Test berth but with the experienced Zaheer around, and Ishant Sharma in the ranks, he may be warming the bench.

By all means India would be desperately making vast improvements in order to bounce back into the series, something they have done with aplomb in the past.

The historic Eden Gardens too will inspire the Indians, who have scored more than 600 in their last three Tests, winning two and drawing one with their last loss here coming more than a decade back — against Pakistan in the Asian Test Championship 1998-99.

As per the wicket, it has always known to have assisted some seam movement early on before getting slow and low from day two. This time too it seems to be no different.

The wicket on offer would be the one that a fortnight ago hosted a Bengal-Gujarat Ranji match and Gujarat forced out a draw with their No 8 and 9 batting out the last day with a century-plus partnership.

England may include pacer Steve Finn, who is raring to go after overcoming a thigh injury, which forced him out of the first two Tests.

Finn took 4-50 in 16 overs during the England Performance Programme’s victory over the DY Patil Academy XI last week and England might pick him to trouble Indian batsmen with pace and bounce early on.

The 23-year-old fast bowler may cost a struggling Stuart Board a place in the side.

“If I’m picked as part of a two-man seam attack, I might be used in a strike-bowling capacity,” Finn said.

In Panesar and Swann, the Englishmen have the house in order in the spin department. Their success will depend heavily on the duo’s consistent performance, even as India would look to dominate spinners as they have done in the past.

As far as batting is concerned, middle-order batsman Ian Bell has returned after going on a paternity leave and he may replace Jonny Bairstow.

Australia, in their quest to conquer the ‘final frontier’ in 2001, were jolted in Kolkata when the venue had provided the perfect turnaround courtesy a VVS Laxman-Rahul Dravid epic show. Down 0-1, India had gone on to win the series 2-1 with back-to-back victories at Eden Gardens and Chepauk.

The historic series, now a part of a cricketing folklore, will certainly serve as an inspiration for the beleaguered Dhoni’s men.

Kolkata pitch may not assist spinners initially: MS Dhoni #IndvsEng

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 05:02 AM PST

India cricket captain MS Dhoni, who had asked for a turning track for the Test match against England at the Eden Gardens beginning Wednesday, said the wicket would not assist the spinners in the first two days and the pacers are likely to get some help from the pitch initially.

“The wicket looks good. We will have to see how the pitch behaves. It depends a lot on the clay content. It won’t help the spinner much initially,” Dhoni said Tuesday in the customary match-eve press meet.

“Fast bowlers this time of the year get some help initially. The role of fast bowlers will be very crucial in this game,” said Dhoni.

India pacers Zaheer Khan, Ashok Dinda and Ishant Sharma were seen slogging hard at the nets bowling to different batsmen.

The India skipper also defended his demand for a spinning track, saying the host team had the right to exploit the home advantage. “When we come to India, we want to play on turning tracks. We want to play on wickets that suit the subcontinent.”

Dhoni did not agree that the 10-wicket defeat in the second Test at Mumbai on a spinning wicket nixed his theory.

“We want to play on turning tracks irrespective of the result. Home advantage is a big part of the game. If you don’t take home advantage, then what is the use of playing around the world, in different conditions?” argued Dhoni.

“It is not that England or Australia have not lost games under seaming and swinging conditions. But they still go with pitches that suit them which are fast and seaming wickets. It is not about whether you lose or win a game, it is about playing in conditions according to your strength. That is what home advantage is all about.”

Dhoni’s insistence on a square turner from Day One of the Eden Test had triggered a controversy when the ground’s veteran curator Prabir Mukherjee called it “immoral and illogical” and threatened to quit. But he was persuaded to continue by Cricket Association of Bengal chief Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Ross Taylor could be axed as New Zealand skipper

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 04:30 AM PST

Ross Taylor is expected to be axed as New Zealand captain when the Black Caps’ squad to tour South Africa is announced this week following a string of disappointing results, reports said Tuesday.

Coach Mike Hesson had lost faith in Taylor and was set to replace him with opener Brendon McCullum, Wellington’s Dominion Post reported.

Taylor, who took over as skipper in June last year, faced heavy criticism when New Zealand threw away a commanding position and crashed to a 10-wicket defeat in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle last month.

While the 28-year-old steered the Black Caps to a series-levelling win in the second Test in Colombo, scoring 142 in the first innings, the New Zealand Herald said several senior players favoured a change of leadership.

It cited a source as saying that ongoing speculation over the captaincy “makes it harder for everyone — it is almost untenable at the moment.”

McCullum was Taylor’s main rival when spinner Daniel Vettori stepped down as captain last year and is seen as a more attacking option than the incumbent.

New Zealand have lost seven of 13 Tests under Taylor’s captaincy, winning four and drawing two.

Two of the wins were against lowly Zimbabwe, with the highlights of his tenure a rare Test victory over Australia in Hobart in December last year and the 167-run victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Over the same period, the Black Caps have lost one-day series to South Africa, the West Indies and Sri Lanka, with their sole series win against Zimbabwe.

Brian Lara was the most feared opponent, says Ricky Ponting

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 03:20 AM PST

Newly retired Ricky Ponting says while India's Sachin Tendulkar was the best batsman he played against, West Indian Brian Lara was the opponent he feared most.

Ponting pulled stumps on his Australian record-equalling 168-Test career at the conclusion of the third Test loss to South Africa in Perth on Monday.

In 17 years of Test cricket, which produced 13,378 runs at 51.85 and made him the second-highest run-scorer in Test history behind Tendulkar, Ponting said the pair stood out as his highest quality opponents.

"I am on record before as saying I felt Sachin was the best player I played against," he said.

"He has so much success against us in our conditions and their conditions.

"But I probably lost more sleep on the eve of games against Lara, because I knew that he could single-handedly win games for his team.

"The way I judge players is their ability to win games by themselves, and Lara could certainly do that and probably did it more than what Sachin did for India."

Lara scored 11,953 runs at 52.88 in 131 Tests, while Tendulkar has 15,562 runs at 54.60 in 192 Tests.

Ponting also nominated fellow 37-year-old Jacques Kallis, who took the catch that ended his final innings on Monday, as another modern great.

Kallis has scored 12,980 runs at 56.92 and taken 282 wickets at 32.57 in his 158 Tests.

"You have to put Kallis in that bracket as well, you put his wickets on top of what he has done with the bat," Ponting said.

"He is averaging 57 in Test cricket, and that is remarkable considering the amount he has had to bowl."

Ponting also nominated India's Harbhajan Singh as one of the bowlers that gave him the most trouble in Test cricket, along with Pakistan's Wasim Akram and West Indian Curtly Ambrose.

"Harbhajan got me out a lot of times and caused me a lot of grief," he said.

MS Dhoni sticks with turning tracks at home despite criticism #IndvsEng

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 02:49 AM PST

Despite facing criticism from all quarters for openly asking for rank turners, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today remained adamant about his demand for designer tracks.

“When it comes to the subcontinents, it’s about the spinners who play a crucial role. Whatever the result maybe we should stick to those kind of wickets which is our speciality,” Dhoni said while addressing the media on the eve of India’s third cricket Test against England.

“We will stick to the turning tracks. That’s what our strength is. That’s what home advantage means,” he reiterated.

“As I said when you come to India, you want to play on the turning tracks. Irrespective of the results — we lost the last game — we want to play on a wicket that suits the sub-continent conditions. That’s what it is.”

“It’s a big part. The concept of playing around the world and the challenge attached with it goes down the drain.

Sometimes we see that even five days are not enough to get a result. I feel the challenges are when you play on tracks that assist the spin. It does not matter if you lose a few games or win the series.”

After their loss in Motera, England bounced back on turning wicket of Wankhede to thrash India by 10 wickets and level the series 1-1.

But Dhoni said it did not matter if they lose or win but sticking to the home conditions was important.

“It’s about providing the different conditions where all the teams want to do well.”

Asked whether they reassessed the situation after English batsmen tamed the Indian spin attack in Mumbai, Dhoni said: “Not really. We will stick to tracks that offer turn. It’s like Australia and England winning games in there conditions but they stick to the speciality there. It’s the same for sub-continental teams.”

Hinting at two-pace attack, Dhoni said, “I don’t think there will be much help for the spinners initially. At this time of the year, fast bowlers get some swing at the start of the play and towards the end. Fast bowlers will be really crucial.”

The India captain maintained that first innings lead will be crucial.

“It’s important to take a first innings lead. It sets up the game. It’s very important to be at par in the first two or three days as we have seen the games changes in the last two days. Then we see what kind of wear and tear.”

Asked on the inconsistent form of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, he said: “We have a side that relies a lot on the openers. But we don’t want to put any extra pressure on them, we want them to enjoy the game. Viru is someone who loves to express himself. It takes a matter of time.”

Facing criticism of late for his own form, the World Cup winning skipper said, “Especially when you have led the side for three years, you would get into the situation. You see both the sides of the coin. The most important thing is to choose the middle path. It’s the most difficult thing to do as emotions get in. The bottomline is to stay in the middle.”

Asked whether the extra burden of wicketkeeping has bogged him down, he said:”It’s very demanding but I don’t really think it affects your game a lot. It’s important to back what your strength is.

On slump in his batting form, he said, “In India, you get a lot of support when you do well and the people will try to pull you down when the team is not doing well. I am not really bothered. I am just trying to do to the best of my potential.”

Australian media lashes out on teams monumental failure against South Africa in 3rd Test #AusvsSA

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 12:30 AM PST

Australian media blasted the national team’s “monumental failure” in the third Test against South Africa while lamenting the end of former skipper Ricky Ponting’s illustrious career.

South Africa thumped the Australians by 309 runs in Perth to hold on to their number one Test ranking and ruin an emotional farewell for Ponting, who bowed out after a 17-year Test career.

Set an improbable 632 runs to win, Australia were dismissed for 322 with a day to spare. Ponting, the second highest runscorer in Test history, was out for just eight after he was given an honour guard by the South Africans.

“Champions contemptuously put the Australians in their place,” said The Australian newspaper.

“Perth was a monumental failure at a critical moment and a timely reminder that Michael Clarke’s side is number three — better on a good day and worse on a bad one like this,” said their cricket writer Peter Lalor.

“Never was the gap between one and three writ more large than in this game.”

The Sydney Morning Herald said: “Proteas use momentum to absolute advantage”, while bemoaning Australia’s “missed opportunity” to grab the number one world ranking. The first two matches in the three-Test series ended in draws.

“It was disappointing enough that Ricky Ponting’s last hurrah was an unremarkable scratching together for eight runs,” the newspaper added.

“For the ambitious Clarke, though, the whole debacle will be viewed as a missed opportunity to crown his captaincy with a return to the top of the Test charts.”

While the team’s failure to win the series came in for some stinging criticism, there was praise for Ponting in his 168th and final Test, finishing his career with 13,378 Test runs at 51.85, including 41 centuries.

“In the blurring of an eye, and 13,378 runs, it was over,” The Australian said.

“Ponting might have mistimed his final shot but not his departure,” the newspaper said. “Better sweet sorrow at parting than a welcome overstayed.”

The Herald, likewise, dedicated column inches to Ponting’s farewell but also looked to the future, questioning what should now happen to the team’s batting order.

“One of the most pressing issues for Australia after the South Africa series is an inconsistent top order that only once in five innings reached 100 by the time the third wicket fell,” it said.

Sydney’s Daily Telegraph also highlighted top order failures, saying: “Batting drought bad news for Ashes,” referring to the series with England next year.

“Had the next generation been more productive, he (Ponting) may not have lasted so long, reinforcing the most pressing problem, a lack of batting depth heading into next year’s Ashes,” the paper’s Malcolm Conn wrote.

Steven Finn ready to challenge India in 3rd Test at Kolkata #IndvsEng

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 12:05 AM PST

England pacer Steven Finn, who sat out the first two Test matches against India due to injury, on Monday declared himself available for the third match beginning Wednesday at the Eden Gardens.

“If I am needed on Wednesday, then I will be ready to go. I feel in good rhythm. I am in a good place,” said Finn, who bowled six overs in two spells at the nets Monday without discomfort.

Finn, who has 66 wickets in 16 Test matches, suffered a thigh strain in the first warm-up game of the tour and there was concern he might miss the entire series. However, he recovered in time for the Kolkata test.

“If I am picked as part of a two-man seam attack, I might be used in a strike-bowling capacity. In the subcontinent you need to have a degree of patience and use your skills wisely,” said Finn.

With fellow pacer Stuart Broad yet to get a wicket in the series and bowling coach David Saker describing his form as an “issue”, Finn might find favour of the selectors in the upcoming match.

“India has a great batting line-up and to get the wicket of somebody you have admired as you grew would be quite a big thing,” said Finn on his aspiration to get the prize wicket of batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar.
