Sachin Tendulkar the greatest batsman of this era: Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis

Posted: 24 Dec 2012 08:15 AM PST

Sachin Tendulkar the greatest batsman of this era Wasim Akram and Waqar YounisFamed Pakistan pace duo Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis Monday paid rich tribute to Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, labelling him “the greatest batsman of this era”.

Tendulkar, 39, announced his retirement from one-day internationals on Sunday after scoring 18,426 runs in 463 matches with 49 centuries — all three world records for most runs, matches and hundreds.

“I don’t say that a batsman like him will not come but he was the greatest batsman of this era and to maintain the zeal and fitness for 23 years was a big achievement for him,” said Waqar, who retired in 2004.

“I also feel proud that I played against him and found him a great player and a nice gentleman.”

Wasim said Tendulkar’s records spoke volumes about his achievements.

“It will be tough to match them in the years to come,” Wasim told AFP. “He was a special talent and a very special cricketer.”

Tendulkar made his Test debut against India’s arch-rivals Pakistan in Karachi in 1989 and Wasim recalled mocking the young batsman with his bowling partner.

“Sachin was really 16 at the time when he came to Pakistan in 1989 and Waqar and I thought, ‘What will this 16-year-old do against us?’” he said.

“I hit him on the mouth but he showed a lot of gumption and courage to score a fifty in the fourth Test in Sialkot and after that innings we realised that he is a special talent.”

As the leading batsman for cricket-mad India, Tendulkar carried the weight of a nation’s expectations on his shoulders, but Wasim said he handled the burden well.

“Sachin always played under a lot of pressure from the billions of Indian fans and the kind of consistency he showed proved that he handled those pressures and huge expectations admirably well,” said Wasim.

Saeed Ajmal is the x-factor for Pakistan against India: Ramiz Raja #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Saeed Ajmal is the x-factor for Pakistan against India- Ramiz RajaFormer captain and noted commentator Ramiz Raja feels off-spinner Saeed Ajmal’s presence is the “x-factor” that Pakistan will have against India in the upcoming five-match limited overs series (T20 and ODI), which starts in Bangalore on Tuesday.

“India have the advantage of coming into the series having played against England while Pakistan will be a bit ring-rusty but Saeed Ajmal is the x-factor that they have and India doesn’t,” Raja, who is an expert on ‘Star Cricket’, told PTI during an interview.

“Ajmal has been Pakistan’s ‘Go-To’ man for some time now.

He is someone who knows how to pick up wickets and also has a lot of variation in his bowling,” Raja further explained.

Talk of Ajmal and comparisons with India’s Ravichandran Ashwin are bound to crop up, but Raja felt that the burly Tamil Nadu boy needed to work on his variations.

“I saw him trying too many things during the Test matches against England. He was trying to come round the wicket.

Surprisingly, when he played the T20′s, I didn’t find him coming round the wicket.

“Although he (Ashwin) was being repeatedly hit over the mid-wicket region, he didn’t try anything different. His bowling was very disappointing during England T20 Internationals as he got only one wicket,” the veteran of 57 Tests and 198 ODIs explained.

Raja felt that Ashwin needed to concentrate more on bowling rather than batting.

“Ashwin shouldn’t forget his primary role in the team. He is an off-spinner who needs to pick wickets.”

On similar lines, he said that it’s time that Shahid Afridi realized he is a “batting all-rounder not a bowling all-rounder.”

Pakistan will play their first T20 game against India at the Chinnaswami Stadium in Bangalore on Tuesday. Sachin Tendulkar recently announced his retirement from ODI team just ahead of the Pakistan series. Looking at the current India team its hard to say they are favorites. They lost the series at home against England. And also Pakistan have a much better pace and spin attack compared to India. Indian batsman have a big task on their shoulders. Indian batting will be tested against the Saeed Ajmal doosra or teesra and Pakistan bowling attack. Both teams are here for win and the people watching the match wants their country to win anyhow. Jackson Bird to debut, Australia announce squad for Boxing Day test against Sri Lanka #AusvsSL

Jackson Bird to debut, Australia announce squad for Boxing Day test against Sri LankaAustralian quick Jackson Bird will make his debut in the Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka, selectors said on Monday, while skipper Michael Clarke was given more time to prove his fitness.

Lanky right-armer Bird will line up alongside strike bowler Peter Siddle with Mitchell Starc controversially rested as part of Cricket Australia’s rotation policy.

Mitchell Johnson replaces the injured Ben Hilfenhaus and spinner Nathan Lyon retains his place as Australia look to make it 2-0 in the three Test series after winning the opener in Hobart last week by 137 runs.

Australian coach Mickey Arthur said Bird was in great form and deserved his chance.

“He brings line and length,” Arthur said. “He brings pressure, he swings the ball out, he brings some nice pace, he’s got all the attributes for a good quick bowler.”

Bird built a strong case for selection with 80 wickets in his 14 Sheffield Shield matches for Tasmania at 17.54 and has snared 14 of those in two matches at the MCG at 12.07.

“I’m going to open the bowling so I’m looking forward to that,” Bird said.

“I feel like I’m ready for Test cricket.”

Starc misses out despite bowling superbly in Hobart with Arthur saying he was being rested ahead of a gruelling 2013 schedule.

“Mitch is our one quick bowler who stars in all three forms of the game,” he said. “We’ve got such a lot of important cricket coming up and Mitch will be integral to that.

“It’s tough on Mitch. Hopefully he misses one Test to make sure that we don’t have another injury.”

Clarke was named to captain the team after batting in the nets Monday, but concern remains over his fitness after he strained a hamstring in the Hobart Test.

Clarke faced throw-downs from assistant coach Stuart Law in the nets under the watchful eye of Arthur and then took a break before batting again against bowlers including Johnson.

Arthur said the skipper would also train on Tuesday with a decision on whether he plays left as long as possible.

“He’s clearly improving. He went far better today than he did yesterday,” Arthur said of a player who has reclaimed the top spot in the latest ICC Test batsman rankings.

“If I was a betting man I’d bet on Michael Clarke leading the team out on Boxing Day. It will be a consultation between Michael and Alex (team physio Alex Kountouris).”

In a column for the Sydney Daily Telegraph, Clarke said he was confident of padding up on Wednesday.

“I love playing at the MCG in the biggest Test of the year but I have never done it justice,” he said.

“I’m still searching for my first hundred there and will be doing everything in my power to make sure it comes this week.

“That has included working overtime with our team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris to make sure my hamstring is right for Boxing Day.

“I only suffered a minor twinge while batting in Hobart and remain confident that I will be fine to play,” he added.

Clarke has had an extraordinary season, scoring 1,489 runs at 106.35 and is just 55 runs adrift of Ricky Ponting’s Australian record of 1,544 in a calendar year.

If he fails to recover, his place will go to Usman Khawaja, with Shane Watson assuming the captaincy.

Australia (probable): David Warner, Ed Cowan, Phil Hughes, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (c), Michael Hussey, Matthew Wade, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird.

Preview India vs Pakistan, 1st T20, Bangalore, 2012Five years after their bilateral cricket ties snapped due to the Mumbai terror attack, India and Pakistan are set to slug it out in what promises to be a high-voltage limited-over series starting with the first Twenty20 international at Bangalore on Tuesday.

The two-match T20 and three-match ODI series has been squeezed in between India’s ongoing full series against the England cricket team, which has taken a break to go home for Christmas and New Year holidays.

India and Pakistan, which last played a bilateral series in 2007, squared off in multi-national events several times after 2008 but for the first time, a Pakistani cricket team will be hosted for a series after the attacks.

The Indian team is going through some testing times as they renew rivalry with Pakistan since the side has been struggling for success.

India did well in the T20s against England after being humiliated in Tests but bowling remains a persistent headache for them in all the formats.

The likes of Alex Hales, Michael Lumb and Eoin Morgan put the Indian attack on sword during the short T20 series and the Pakistan batsmen would be looking to exploit this weakness of the hosts.

Except for a spirited show put up by Ashok Dinda, none of the Indian bowlers made an impact on the English batsmen.

Parvinder Awana, Ravichandran Ashwin and Piyush Chawla have all struggled to get wickets.

This may prompt skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to give a chance to either Abhimanyu Mithun or Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Surprisingly, Yuvraj Singh was the most successful bowler with six wickets and he also batted stupendously for India.

India would want the Chandigarh boy to continue with his good touch against a very tricky opponent.
Flamboyant Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and skipper Dhoni himself have had some runs under their belts and they would like to continue in the same vein against Pakistan.

It will be interesting to see if Dhoni gives a chance to Ambati Rayudu, considering his past performances in this format of the game.

But it will be a tough test for Indian batsmen against Pakistan’s formidable pace attack, led by Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir.

Not only the pacers but Pakistan have an extremely good spin attack in the form of Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi and captain Mohammad Hafeez to choke the strong Indian batting.

Afridi’s dwindling form has been a worry for the Pakistani captain which at times muzzles the team’s batting prospects. However, Hafeez has tremendous confidence in his all round abilities.

Pakistan have landed in India after making wholesale changes to their bowling. They have made six changes to the squad that went to Sri Lanka for the T20 World Cup.

Fast bowler Junaid Khan, who was dropped from World T20 squad, has been included for his ability to do well in the death overs.

Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Amin and M Irfan have also made a comeback while Asad Ali and Zulfiqar Babar are the other inclusions.

India and Pakistan met last time in the 2012 T20 World Cup which the former won by eight wickets.

In 2007 T20 World Championships, India won both the clashes. In the league stage, the match ended in a tie and India won via a bowl-out. In the final, India defeated Pakistan by five runs to win the trophy.

Teams:

India (probable): Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni (c & wk), R Ashwin, Piyush Chawla, Ashok Dinda, Parvinder Awana

Pakistan (probable): Mohammad Hafeez (c), Nasir Jamshed, Kamran Akmal (wk), Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Sohail Tanveer, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan.

Guptill: ‘I had a good hit at the nets and was feeling good and relaxed. Hoping for more of such knocks, we have a must win game coming up and hopefully we can do as well as we did today. It’s similar to the situation we had last summer back home, going into the final game with the series level. It’s make or break for us.’

Guptill is the Man of the Match

McCullum: ‘Credit to the strength of the team to fight back and lift the spirits. Guptill was brilliant, I’m proud of the way he batted. We bowled pretty well, it was a good surface and the outfield was fast. We needed a couple of partnerships and we got that. Nicol’s contribution at the top was important as well. The other day, we were over-aggressive and put under pressure early on. Today we stuck to our plans and that was good to see. It’s good to bounce back after being under pressure, this isn’t a one-off game for us. We have to carry it into the next match and the rest of the series.’

du Plessis: ‘I thought we had enough runs on the board but there was too much dew. It was tough for our spinners. We had a couple of catching opportunities but it’s not the easiest catching conditions here, it was difficult. I’m very happy with the batting. It happens though, when someone scores a hundred like that, there’s nothing much you can do. It’s a learning experience for me, I’m enjoying the challenge. We didn’t play a bad game. We were just outplayed by a superb knock. 9 times out of 10, when someone scores a hundred, that teams wins.’
