Pakistan tour of India on schedule, confirm Zaka Ashraf #PakvsInd

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 10:29 AM PST

The PCB has said that the incident involving the captain of the national blind team in India will neither affect relations between the two cricket boards nor the forthcoming One-day series in India.

PCB chairman, Zaka Ashraf dismissed speculations about some conspiracy behind the incident where the blind cricket team captain, Zeeshan Ashraf drank detergent water thinking it to be mineral water.

“It was a mistake that led to the unfortunate incident and no acid was given to Zeeshan, that is incorrect. A waiter accidentally left a bottle of detergent on the breakfast table,” he said.

“If one person has made a mistake it should and will not affect cricket relations between the two countries and our tour to India is on schedule,” Ashraf insisted.

Pakistan’s national team is due to tour India from December 22 to play two T20 matches and three One-day Internationals, and it will be the first bilateral series between the two nations since 2007.

A high-level security delegation of the board also returned home Saturday after a week-long visit to India to inspect the match venues and other arrangements, including security for the Pakistan team.

The delegation has expressed its satisfaction over the security and other arrangements being made for the tour.

“The delegation has given us a report and they are satisfied that our team will be well looked after in every aspect so the tour is on,” Ashraf said.

Nadeem Sarwar, the media manager of the board, who went with the delegation to India, said that they had done a comprehensive inspection of arrangements at every venue.

“We are sure there will be foolproof security for our players as all the match venues have the ability to do this.

The visa policy has also been made clear now so everything is on track,” Sarwar said.

He also said that the Indians were also making top arrangements for the series, which is a highly anticipated one in India as well.

Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh made scapegoats for India’s debacle against England: Sunil Gavaskar #IndvsEng

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Sunday said that veteran pacer Zaheer Khan’s omission from the squad for fourth Test was on expected lines but Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh have made “soft targets.”

“If you ask me, Zaheer’s exclusion was expected but I believe that Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh has been made scapegoats,” Gavaskar commented about the squad for the final Test match in Nagpur.

“If you look at Harbhajan’s performance in Mumbai, he got to bowl some 20-odd overs (21) and also got two wickets. If India lost in Mumbai, it was a collective failure. Yuvraj also got into 30′s. If you want to drop them then why not some of the others who have also not performed. Both Yuvraj and Harbhajan are soft targets,” Gavaskar told ‘NDTV’ on Sunday.

The legendary opener also seemed peeved with “attitude of some of the players”.

“I think a good idea would have been if chairman of selection committee (Sandip Patil) would have gone to the dressing room and spoken with the players who haven’t played some good shots to get out. Also with the bowlers. The defeat should hurt them. But sadly, I saw some of the players joking around and playing football as if nothing has happened. That’s not a good attitude.”

About the selection of Parvinder Awana, Gavaskar said,”I don’t know his domestic performance but if he has done well in domestic cricket, I have no issues. But IPL can’t be a yardstick for selection in national team. India cap should be earned the hard way.”

Gavaskar however feels that calling for Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s head will be a knee-jerk reaction.

“A captain is as good as his team. I don’t think we have any alternative of Dhoni at the moment. If you want to change the captain for the heck of it, then it’s different,” he concluded.

Darren Sammy defends under-performing Chris Gayle

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 09:30 AM PST

Captain Darren Sammy was left defending under-performing opener Chris Gayle after the West Indies slid to a 2-3 defeat in the five-match One-Day International series against Bangladesh at Dhaka.

The left-handed Gayle, one of the finest limited overs batsmen in the contemporary game, managed just 72 runs from five innings in the series as the Caribbean side’s batting struggled throughout.

Sammy contended, however, that the team’s performances did not centre around one player.

“I would like to see all my players perform. Things don’t always go the way you want them to. Obviously Chris is a very experienced player and I know he will come back good anytime,” Sammy told a media conference on Saturday night.

“Credit to the Bangladesh team for the way they bowled at him throughout this series. They had a plan and they stuck to it. The team doesn’t revolve around one person, it’s a collective set of people to go out there and do what is necessary for us to win.”

He added: “I don’t blame people, I’ve always said that cricket is a team sport. We’ve got to pull together as a team. It’s not every day the same people will perform and today we got a performance from (Kieron) Pollard and (Darren) Bravo and Kemar (Roach) got five wickets. We just need more performances from the team and that would make us more successful.”

The West Indies entered the series with their batting as their strength but failed to live up to expectations. They were dismissed in the opening ODI in Khulna for 199 to lose by seven wickets and crashed for a paltry 132 in the second game, chasing 293 for victory.

Even when they chased a moderate 228 to win the third game, they needed Marlon Samuels’ century in order to triumph after the batting struggled again, and they mustered just 211 off 50 overs in the fourth game before their bowlers defended well.

Saturday, Pollard emerged from poor form to slam a stroke-filled 85 while Bravo, perhaps the most consistent batsman in the series, scored 51.

The pair added 132 for the fourth wicket to repair the innings after the Windies had slumped to 17 for three.

“The difference between the two teams is that we lost. We have not played our best cricket but we still put ourselves in a position to win the series,” Sammy pointed out.

Alastair Cook credits Mushtaq Ahmed for success against India #IndvsEng

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST

England captain Alastair Cook Sunday gave credit to the coaching staff, especially spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed, for the team’s resounding victory in the third cricket Test against India at the Eden Gardens.

“We are very lucky that we’ve got people like Mushtaq, David Saker and Andy Flower around. We really have a great coaching staff. Mushtaq has been great in these conditions. Having played all his cricket in these conditions, he has nuggets of advice which he acquired playing here (subcontinent). He has so much to give and we have so much to learn not only from him but all the coaching staff,” Cook told mediapersons here after England won the match by seven wickets.

While the former Pakistan leggie is the spin coach, Zimbabwean great Andy Flower is the head coach. Saker is their bowling coach.

He said it was due to collective team effort that his side managed to turn things around after losing the first Test and take an 2-1 lead in the four-match series.

“Lot of hard work has gone into for the results that we have. We were able to take to the middle what we have been doing at the nets,” he said.

He termed his bowlers’ performances as “outstanding” and “exceptional”.

“Our bowlers have been outstanding in this match, especially the first innings. Restricting (India) to 300-odd on that wicket was really really a great effort.”

Praising the bowlers for their display in the Indian second innings, Cook said taking six wickets in the post-lunch session on Day four was an example of “highly skilled bowling”.

“The bowlers were exceptional,” he said.

On the side’s batting performance, Cook said: “We thought of staying long on that wicket and we could do that exactly. The way we performed was satisfying. That the batsmen did well and the bowlers were superb.”

Cook said his team will go for a win in the last Test in Nagpur.

“Without doubt, we will go into the last match for a win. We cannot have the mentality to go into the match hoping for a draw.

“I firmly believed that we were doing the right things especially in the build to the series. And the results have proved that we are doing the right things. We got to keep doing the right things in the last match as well. It is great to be contributing like this and I hope to continue,” he said.

Cook also called his bizarre run out as an embarrassment.

“I had a brain failure… I was running and the ball came like that. My immediate reaction was what I did. In realisation it is more embarrassing than anything else,” added Cook.

The visiting skipper was run out on 190 in the first innings when he took evasive action letting the ball hit the stumps.

Big Bash League 2012-13: Travis Birt guides Hobart Hurricanes to 8 wickets win over Brisbane Heat

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 04:21 AM PST

The Heat posted a respectable score of 6-172 which was anchored by quality knocks from Joe Burns (44) and Dan Christian (49) in the middle overs.

Fireworks from Heat captain Shane Watson early in the innings, and Sri Lankan import Thisara Perera at the end provided valuable runs to the total and plenty of entertainment for the Brisbane crowd.

Doug Bollinger (0-47) had a day to forget with the ball, but Michael Hogan (2-29) and Evan Gulbis (3-22) picked up a handful of wickets between them without leaking too many runs.

The Hurricanes responded with a steadily-built, controlled innings. By the time Tim Paine (28) was caught by Cameron Gannon off James Hopes’ bowling in the sixth over, Tasmania had 50 runs on the board and were looking comfortable in the chase. His opening partner Jon Wells (38) stuck around until the 11th over, accumulating handy runs in the process.

Owais Shah (36) and Travis Birt (57) put together a match-winning stand of 91 to take the game away from the Heat.

The Heat players thought they had finally seen the back of Birt in Perera’s first over, when goalkeeper Chris Hartley dived forward to claim a caught behind. The umpires were unsure whether the ball had carried and replays proved inconclusive, so Birt continued at the crease.

No matter what the Heat attempted, they were unable to stem the tide, as the Hurricanes cruised to victory with six balls and eight wickets to spare.

Where it was won
The Hurricanes only scored one run in their first over, and six in their second, but with each wicket-less over at the start of their innings, they gained confidence and momentum. By the time Paine fell in the sixth over, a solid foundation had already been built for the remainder of the chase.

Where it was lost
There was a moment in the middle of the Hurricane’s innings when it looked like they were being restricted by the Heat bowlers and the pressure was beginning to build. Then in the 13th over, Shah smacked 16 off a perfectly respectable Cutting over. When Birt belted 22 off Hopes’ next over, the tide had well and truly turned against the Heat.

Who killed it
Dan Christian’s innings in a losing side was the perfect blend of restraint and flair. He held up one end as Joe Burns cut loose, before taking charge himself to smash 49 runs, including four fours and two sixes. His presence through the bulk of the Heat innings was crucial to them posting an impressive total.

Wow moment
The very first delivery of the match was gasp-worthy. Doug Bollinger got the attention of the Gabba crowd for all the wrong reasons as he hurled down a ball so short and wide that it flew through the slips cordon to the boundary and cost his side five runs.

Where to next
The Heat are off to Adelaide to take on the Strikers on Thursday night. The Strikers have one of the most balanced-looking sides in the comp, with plenty of depth in their bowling stocks especially, so it will be vital to select the right starting 10.

The Hurricanes, meanwhile, will face the Melbourne Stars at the MCG next Friday. Hobart fans will be hoping they can dish out further punishment to Warney and his chargers.

MS Dhoni says he will not quit captaincy #IndvsEng

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 02:59 AM PST

Despite two successive humiliating defeats on home soil, under fire Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday refused to step down from captaincy, saying it was not the right time to run away but take responsibility and turn the team’s fortunes.

“The easiest thing for me to say right now is to say, ‘I quit captaincy’ and be a part of the side. But that’s like running away from the responsibility,” he said after India were handed a seven-wicket defeat by England at the Eden Gardens on Sunday to trail the four-match series 1-2.

“Of course there are others who will decide. There is BCCI and the administrative people who also want to look into that”, Dhoni said at the post-match press conference.

Dhoni, whose Test form has also come under the scanner, said it was his responsibility to get the team together and prepare for the next match.

“For me, my responsibility is to get the team together and be prepared for the next Test match. This is where experience will count. You have got the right mix of experienced and fresh guys”, he pointed out.

“As a leader, this is a challenge that has been thrown up to me or towards me. It’s always good to lead a side when everybody is doing well. That’s a time when you don’t need a leader. Leading a side is when the team is not doing well.

“You would try to gel the team well and back the senior guys and try to move in the right direction.”

Asked whether he’s still the best person to lead the Test side, he said “the selectors are there to decide.”

The back-to-back defeats came in the aftermath of India’s eight successive away defeats in England and Australia last year, which Dhoni described as the lowest phase of his career.

“I think England, Australia series were the lowest part. Because we were not really able to compete. We know what the faults are over here and we should be able to rectify those,” he said.

The series of embarrassing defeats have come incidentally after Duncan Fletcher took the coaching job before the England away series as India slipped from No 1 to No. 5.

But Dhoni said it’s not the time to play the blame game. “It’s wrong to question the coach. We have won quite a few series. The ODIs performance has been really good, in between we’ve won a Test series,” he explained.

“Yes, we have struggled in Australia and England series and this is a series we’ve not done well and lost two matches. We should not really look for excuses and play the blame game, putting it on the coach. Ultimately, it’s the 11 players who turn up on the field.”

Dhoni said Fletcher has got excellent technical knowledge and has guided the players in the right direction.

“He has been doing what the coaches do. He has got excellent technical knowledge about batting. He guides the players in the right direction,” he said.

“But ultimately once you cross the rope, you’re on your own. That’s the time when you’ve to get up and retaliate to the opposition, that’s where we’re lacking as of now,” he added.

Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan dropped from India squad for 4th Test against England #IndvsEng

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 02:18 AM PST

Stung by two successive defeats, the national selectors today cracked the whip by axing veteran pace spearhead Zaheer Khan and batsman Yuvraj Singh from the squad for the fourth and final Test against England starting on Thursday.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who did not play the last match, also found himself in casualty list as the selectors opted for a leg-spinner in Piyush Chawla and infused young blood by picking Delhi paceman Parvinder Awana and Saurashtra all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Barring Yuvraj and Zaheer’s omissions, there were no major changes to the squad announced by BCCI Secretary Sanjay Jagdale after a meeting of the Sandeep Patil-led selection panel.

The selectors also announced the team for the two Twenty20 matches to be held in Pune (December 20) and Mumbai (December 22) in which Uttar Pradesh all-rounder Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Awana were the two new faces.

Squad for Nagpur Test: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin Piyush Chawla, Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Dinda, M Vijay, Parvinder Awana.

MS Dhoni blames batsman for team India debacle in 3rd Test against England #IndvsEng

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 11:40 PM PST

Embarrassed and dejected after being outplayed for the second successive time by England, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday held his batsmen responsible for the debacle, saying that they failed to convert starts into substantial innings.

England won by seven wickets in the third Test on Sunday to take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series, which India were expected to dominated given their formidable home record.

But the home team has completely fallen apart in the last two Tests and is currently looking down the barrel ahead of the series-decider in Nagpur starting December 13.

“We need to give bowlers a few more runs. We haven’t scored consistently over 300. On this wicket we should have scored 450 or above. The batsmen who got starts didn’t make it matter,” a livid Dhoni said at post-match presentation ceremony.

“In the second innings, it was like a landslide we couldn’t stop,” he added referring to the collapse that saw the team fold up for 247, leaving England with a victory target of just 41 runs.

Dhoni, however, tried to put up a brave face by stating that the team would make a strong comeback in the fourth Test in Nagpur.

“We have everything to play for in Nagpur. Everybody needs to pull up their socks. Of course the better team won here. They bowled in the right areas they fielded well… They played well but we need to retaliate,” he said.

In contrast, his opposite number and man of the match Alastair Cook had a huge grin on his face after being the hero of England’s win with a first innings personal score of 190.

“Everyone performed. To keep India to 300 on that wicket was a great effort. Credit to all the hard work we have put in. It was a tough morning session yesterday,” said Cook, who has been played the sheet-anchor role to perfection during the series.

Humble about his fantastic run with the bat, Cook said luck has played its part in his superb form.

“We knew we needed to strike early, that’s what Graeme Swann did. It is nice to contribute to the team success. To score runs out here you need to bat long period. I needed some luck also,” he said.

Cook said the team would party hard to celebrate the win but will recover in time to turn up fresh for Nagpur.

“We have to recover well, this win has taken a lot out of us. We will try to win the series in Nagpur, we can’t be complacent,” he said.

A listless India succumbed to their second successive humiliating defeat on home soil has England overcame a few hiccups to clinch the third Test with an emphatic seven-wicket victory and take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match series on Sunday.

Scorecard | Day 5 Highlights 3rd Test

Needing 41 runs to win the match after dismissing India for 247 in the second innings, the visitors lost three quick wickets to add a tinge of excitement to an otherwise lop-sided contest before cruising home with more than two sessions to spare.

Captain Alastair Cook (1), Jonathan Trott (3) and Kevin Pietersen (0) were out cheaply but Ian Bell (28 not out) held his nerve to take the team to the victory target at the Eden Gardens.

Bell took a single off R Ashwin to bring about England’s moment of triumph, triggering of scenes of celebrations in the dressing room as the players hugged each other and took a round of the stadium.

With another resounding victory, England kept themselves on course for their first series win on Indian soil in 28 years since David Gower-led team won a series 2-1 in the 1984-85 series.

Though the Indian bowlers took three wickets in the second innings, they looked completely ineffective in the first innings unlike the English bowlers who exploited the conditions far better.

After the humiliating 10-wicket defeat in Mumbai, the hosts once again seemed clueless in their own den with neither batting nor bowling clicking, raising questions on whether some players need to be changed.

The two teams will now travel to Nagpur for the fourth and final Test beginning December 13. England just need a draw to record a historic series triumph while India have no option but to win to level the series and save the blushes of a series defeat in their own den.

Cook: ‘It was a great performance for four and a half days. Everybody from 1-11 performed well. The Indian openers started off well but the bowlers stood up and credit to them for all the hard work put in. It was a tough morning session yesterday and we did not get our bowling right. It is nice to contribute to the team’s success and luckily I have had a bit of luck in this series. We will enjoy the win today but we have to recover well and play well in Nagpur. We appreciate the support of the Barmy Army. We will go all out for the win at Nagpur.’

Alastair Cook is the MoM for his knock of 190 in the first innings.

Dhoni: ‘We need to give the bowlers some more runs. We have not scored over 300 consistently. On this wicket, we needed to score over 450. In the second innings, we lost a lot of wickets and we lost the match. We got off to a good start with Gambhir and Sehwag batting well. Nobody could soak up the pressure. We have to play well in Nagpur. We need to pull our socks up. England bowled well in the right areas and they played good cricket.’
