Wasim Akram hails Bangladesh decision to tour Pakistan #PakvsBan

Wasim Akram hails Bangladesh decision to tour PakistanLegendary paceman Wasim Akram Tuesday hailed Bangladesh’s decision to tour Pakistan next month, saying it was an important step on the road to reviving international cricket in the country.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Monday said it has agreed in principle to tour Pakistan to restore international cricket, which has been suspended since militant attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009.

BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus told AFP in Dhaka that Pakistan had proposed a one-day international and a Twenty20 game to be played in Lahore on January 12 and 13.

“It’s a welcome decision and I hope that the tour takes place as agreed because Pakistan badly needs international cricket and one series will convince other countries to tour,” Wasim told reporters.

Bangladesh had accepted an invitation to tour Pakistan in April for a short limited-over series but the Dhaka High Court blocked the tour on security grounds. Officials have said they see no judicial bar this time.

“Pakistan badly needs international cricket and I fear that if this suspension continues for another two (or) three years then it will affect the standard of Pakistan cricket,” said Wasim, Pakistan’s all-time top Test wicket-taker.

“I think the overall security situation in Pakistan is improving and if we put in place the best arrangements for the Bangladesh series then other teams will also follow suit,” he said.

But the Pakistan Cricket Board has been cautious over the prospects of Bangladesh touring, with president Zaka Ashraf telling local media negotiations were under way, but if a series took place, it would be in January. (AFP)

James Anderson, Jonathan Trott rested for ODI series against IndiaEngland have rested fast bowler James Anderson and batsman Jonathan Trott from the next month’s One-Day series against India and replaced them with Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler.

The visitors have also included young batsman Joe Root in the Twenty20 squad for the upcoming two-matches series.

“Woakes and Buttler get their chance as two of the stars of the tourists’ Test series victory are given a rest,” the ECB said in a statement.

The first T20 games is scheduled for Thursday in Pune and Saturday in Mumbai. The tourists will returned to their homeland for the Christmas break and then return to India in the new year for five ODIs, starting January 11.

Anderson had originally been selected only to play the first three matches of the five-ODI series.

Woakes, who is currently playing domestic cricket in New Zealand, has played six ODIs, taking seven wickets at 29.14 and scoring 72 runs.

Buttler, the 22-year-old Somerset batsman, only has one ODI cap under his belt. In that match, against Pakistan in Dubai, he collected a second-ball duck.

Root was added to the T20 squad that was weakened by the injury to Stuart Broad, who will be replaced as captain by Eoin Morgan.

Australia crush Sri Lanka by 137 runs in 1st Test to take 1-0 series lead #SLvsAus

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 12:54 AM PST

Australia beat Sri Lanka by 137 runs in 1st Test to take 1-0 series leadMitchell Starc claimed five wickets as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 255 runs Tuesday, giving Australia a 137-run win over Sri Lanka in the final session of the first Test.

A dogged Sri Lanka had 36 overs to survive after going to tea at 186-4, but lost its remaining six wickets for just 26 runs as Peter Siddle tore through the middle order before Starc claimed a second-innings 5-63. Man-of-the-match Siddle mixed up line and length on the cracked Bellerive Oval pitch to remove Angelo Mathews and Thilan Samaraweera within eight overs of the evening session, leaving Starc to take the last four wickets.

Australia’s first win in four Tests this southern summer gives it a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Sri Lanka has now lost nine of 11 tests in Australia. Starc and Siddle, who came close to being the first man to take 10 wickets in a Test at Bellerive Oval, will be Australia’s key weapons in the second Test in Melbourne starting Dec. 26.

Ben Hilfenhaus joined the long list of injured pacemen during Sri Lanka’s first innings, leaving Australia a bowler light for almost the whole match. For much of final day it looked as though Sri Lanka stood a chance of saving the match through the efforts of Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Samaraweera.

Chasing an unattainable 393 to win after Australia’s 450-5 declared and 278-9, Jayawardene and Sangakkara were concerned only with survival and barely looked for scoring shots but still took their career partnership tally to 5,628 runs at an average of 56.28. Already the fourth most prolific partnership in Test history, Sangakkara and Jayawardene resumed on 65-2 and took their third-wicket stand to 65 before the captain edged Siddle to his Australian counterpart Michael Clarke, who seemed untroubled by a right hamstring injury he sustained Monday.

It was 144-3 at lunch and Sri Lanka scored just 42 runs from 24 overs in a rain-affected second session for only the loss of Sangakkara, who was trapped lbw by Siddle. Sangakkara successfully referred an earlier lbw decision, but there was no reprieve this time, departing for a 226-ball 63 that means he now averages 57.25 in Australia — where Sri Lanka has never won a test.

The draw still looked a strong possibility against a tiring bowling attack, but Mathews needlessly played at a ball outside his off stump and edged through to Matthew Wade. Wade, who earlier handed the wicketkeeping gloves to Phil Hughes while called on to bowl an over just before tea, took the catch to dismiss Mathews for 19 from 61 balls. Wade’s over was a maiden.

Samaraweera’s gritty innings ended in an lbw to Siddle after 49 runs from 140 balls and Sri Lanka’s tail was suddenly exposed. Australia pushed all nine fielders into close attacking positions to pressure the inexpert batsmen. Mitchell Starc had Prasanna Jayawardene (21) caught by Mike Hussey, who scored a first-innings 115 not out. Starc then got rid of Nuwan Kulasekara for 9 with an outswinger that nicked through to Wade.

That made it 247-8 with Starc bowling to four slips and two gullies and he proceeded to bowl Rangana Herath via his boot for 8 to wrap up the match, finding some extra bounce for an edge from Shaminda Eranga through to Wade. But it wasn’t all good news for Australia, with Siddle finding himself at the center of a ball tampering allegation.

Sri Lanka team manager Charith Senanayake said the tourists approached match referee Chris Broad to complain about Siddle allegedly lifting the seam on the ball. “It’s unofficial, but it’s on video and the whole world has seen it so let’s see what action they will take,” Senanayake said.

India-Pakistan ODI and T20 series won’t be called off: BCCI #IndvsPak

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 12:30 AM PST

India-Pakistan ODI and T20 series won't be called off BCCIThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Tuesday shot down Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) demand of cancelling the Indo-Pak limited-overs cricket series in the wake of visiting Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik “insulting” India, insisting that the matches would be held as scheduled.

“There is no question of calling off the tour. All the arrangements have been made and the tour was planned much earlier. Politics should not be mixed with sports and the tour will go on,” senior BCCI official and IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla told PTI.

On Monday in the Indian Parliament, the BJP had accused Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde of remaining silent by not responding appropriately to Malik, who triggered controversy by equating the 26/11 Mumbai attacks with the Babri Masjid demolition and describing LeT terrorist Abu Jundal as an operative of Indian intelligence agency.

New Delhi has rubbished Malik’s assertions.

Senior BJP leader Yashwant Singh said, “The Indo-Pak cricket series (commencing on December 25) should be cancelled.

“What kind of goodwill we are creating by playing cricket matches after Malik’s visit,” he told reporters outside Parliament House.

“…our Home Minister has shown weakness by not responding to Rehman Malik in kind. He should have immediately responded, if he (Malik) used hard words, he (Shinde) should have used hard words,” Sinha said.

“If you (Malik) insulted India, you (Shinde) should have said we don’t accept it. He (Shinde) should have contradicted the Pakistani Interior Minister’s statement then and there.”

India are scheduled to play two Twenty20s and three one-dayers against Pakistan starting December 25.

No viable alternative to replace MS Dhoni as India captain: Rahul Dravid

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 12:02 AM PST

No viable alternative to replace MS Dhoni as India captain Rahul DravidMitchell Starc claimed five wickets as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 255 runs on Tuesday, giving Australia a 137-run win over Sri Lanka in the final session of the first Test.

A dogged Sri Lanka had 36 overs to survive after going in to tea at 186-4, but lost their remaining six wickets for just 26 runs as Peter Siddle tore through the middle order before Starc The clamour for Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s removal as India’s captain might be becoming shriller by the day but former skipper Rahul Dravid feels he is the man to take the team forward as there is no viable alternative in sight.

“At the moment I don’t really see a viable alternative. I really think Dhoni can be the man to take India forward if he has the energy, passion and the enjoyment to do it. That’s again the key,” Dravid told ESPNCricinfo.

“It’s really going to come down to a lot of these players actually sitting back themselves, once the emotion has gone back, and calmly reassessing where they’re at, and their roads to the future and the joy and enthusiasm they have to take Indian cricket forward. If Dhoni has it, I believe he is the right man to do it but that’s really up to him to decide,” he said.

Dhoni’s captaincy in the series, which India lost 1-2, came under severe criticism from former players such as Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth, who felt the time has come to replace him.

Analysing India’s meek surrender in the series, Dravid said the team is in transition but should have shown more intensity.

“Any time you lose a Test series at home, because India haven’t lost a lot at home, you could consider it a low point.

You’ve got to accept a little bit that this team is in transition as well, you have to give a bit of leeway for that.

I think India will be disappointed, they would have expected to beat England at home,” he said.

“At the start of the series, and especially after Ahmedabad, you got the feeling that India felt they could have won the series. It hasn’t panned out that way. From that point of view, I guess you can only go up from here.

“India have lost a couple of series away from home, against England and Australia badly. There was always a feeling that, you know, India might not necessarily have been playing well abroad but India will always do well in India, and all of us I guess believed that as well. That has shown to be slightly not so true, and it’s time to introspect,” he added.claimed a second-innings 5 for 63.
