Virat Kohli should replace MS Dhoni as skipper: Sunil Gavaskar #IndvsEng

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 08:41 AM PST

Virat Kohli should replace MS Dhoni as skipper Sunil GavaskarBatting legend Sunil Gavaskar feels young Virat Kohli is the future of Indian cricket and he is ready to take up the captaincy job from incumbent Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the aftermath of the series defeat against England.

England broke the 28-year-old jinx by defeating India 2-1 verdict in the Test series after the fourth and final match ended in a draw at Nagpur on Monday.

Gavaskar said it is time the selectors look to the future as Dhoni seemed out of sorts in this series.

“Till the fourth day of this Test I said there is no alternative to Mahendra Singh Dhoni, but now that Virat (Kohli) has come up with a 100 under trying circumstances I think he has discovered a good part about himself. I think he is ready to take on the mantle,” the former India skipper said.

“I think this is something to be looked at in a positive manner because that’s where the future is,” Gavaskar told NDTV.

He also criticised the Indian team for the humiliating defeat but Dhoni’s name came up for special mention for his ordinary and unaggressive captaincy in this series.

“If India were looking for a win they should have shown the intent by declaring at the overnight score. England batted exceedingly well but our bowlers were ineffective and our batters didn’t do as much as they were expected to do. It was a team failure,” he said.

“You don’t put a forward short-leg and a silly point to just get wickets. You also put them to pressurise the batsmen and get his wicket somwehere else. When you crowd a batsmen with fielders in his peripheral vision pressure automatically come on him and that’s what he (Dhoni) didn’t do,” Gavaskar said about Dhoni’s reluntance to deploy a more attacking field during England’s second innings.

MS Dhoni praises England, blames pitch for series loss #IndvsEng

MS Dhoni praises England, blames pitch for series lossIndia captain MS Dhoni has said England deserved the series win after the fourth and final cricket Test ended in a drab draw on Monday.

England won the series 2-1, their first win on Indian soil since 1984-85.

Dhoni, asked if England deserved the series win, said: “I think so, we struggled in the batting department but their spinners were right on the mark, James Anderson was very good, testing the batsmen.”

Dhoni, however, criticised the pitch conditions saying it was difficult to pick wickets.

“As the game progressed there wasn’t much for the spinners or fast bowlers. If you got your head down it was hard to take wickets. I think it got better, coming on to the bat and easier to play strokes,” he said.

“We tried a few combinations that didn’t really work (in the series), we had some part-timers but we needed someone like (Ravindra) Jadeja to keep the lid on the batsmen. (Cheteshwar) Pujara’s batting was a positive and (Gautam) Gambhir got back in the runs.”

A smiling England captain Alastair Cook couldn’t hide his happiness and praised his team for an incredible performance.

“Special day, special tour. Today, it was a flat wicket to bat on but (Jonathan Trott) Trotty and (Ian Bell) Belly did it so calmly. We were quite surprised with the pitch at the start, how low and slow it was, but it got better. We knew if we didn’t give anyway any soft dismissals it would be hard to bowl us out and I’m proud the lads fronted up,” said Cook.

England, who lost the first Test match in humiliating fashion, came back with great vigour first to level the series and then take the lead with a comprehensive win in Kolkata.

“After Ahmedabad, the heavy defeat, it’s been a fantastic response. In my first series as captain, I couldn’t have asked for more, it’s a very proud moment. Our bowlers have been brilliant and all the batsman contributed. It’s always nice when it goes well, can’t praise the team, the squad enough, the backroom staff but also the fans, the Barmy Army and the India supporters as well.”

England seal historic series win over India after 28 years as Nagpur test ends in draw #IndvsEng

England seal historic win over India after 28 years as Nagpur test ends in drawEngland on Monday broke a 28-year-old jinx by achieving a historic Test series win on Indian soil, leaving the hosts embarrassed with a 2-1 verdict in their favour after the fourth and final match ended in a draw.

The last time an English side had defeated India in their own den was way back in 1984-85, under the captaincy of David Gower.

The day belonged to centurions Jonathan Trott (147) and Ian Bell’s unbeaten 116 even as the story remained the same for a hapless India who toiled without much success before the match was called off on the final day with England scoring 352 for four.

The hosts needed to take quick wickets to entertain hopes of a win but that did not happen as Trott and Bell batted off the first session to ensure the series triumph for the hosts.

The English players broke into wild celebrations the moment the two sides mutually agreed to a draw at the Green Park stadium. There was a feeling of bonhomie and the tourists hugged each other even as gloom descended on the Indian dressing room.

Bell and debutant Joe Root (20) were at the crease when the stumps were drawn for the final time in the series.

It was a remarkable turnaround from the visitors after the humiliating defeat in the series opener in Ahmedabad a month ago.

England staged a strong comeback in the next match in Mumbai where the hosts were crushed by 10 wickets, and the script was pretty similar in Kolkata — the venue for the third Test — where the visitors cruised to a seven-wicket victory at the Eden Gardens.

This is also the first time in the last eight years that India have suffered a Test series defeat at home. Australia beat India 2-1 in 2004-05.

Cook: ‘It’s a special day, a special tour for us. Today was really good. Trott batted very calmly and it was a fantastic effort. We thought that batting would become more difficult later in the game but it actually got better. The batsmen fronted up and took on the challenge. Everyone in this squad can be really proud of what they have achieved. I can’t ask any more from any member of this team. The way they came back after the loss in the first Test was just superb. It’s nice when it goes well. I want to thank the back-room staff. I want to thank all the fans who came to watch us, not only the Barmy Army but the Indian public as well.’

Alastair Cook is the Man of the Series.

Anderson: ‘We really wanted to show the people what we can do and we have. Reverse swing has been a key part in the series. We worked on it in the nets and executed it well. We get a lot of rest as well with the spinners bowling long spells. We have really enjoyed the tour here. I’d like to thank the fans who have travelled to cheer us. For fast bowlers going into the last spell at the end of the day, it’s been a great help.’

James Anderson is the MoM for his four wickets.

MS Dhoni: ‘We struggled in the batting department. I think our spinners were right on the mark. I think the difference between the two sides was JAmes Anderson. I think he bowled really well. The batsmen have to take responisbility for not putting enough runs on the board. We have to be on tour toes on a track that turns. Cook batted really well. As this game progressed, there was not much for the bowlers. The third day evening was the best for the spinners to bowl. I think this Test match would have certainly been a draw. We needed two or three more days for a result. We are still trying to get the bowling combination. We wanted a part time bowler to bowl a lot of overs. We brought in Jadeja to do something like that. Pujara batted really well. So did Kohli and Gambhir.’

Australia on top as Sri Lanka chasing 393 to win in 1st test #AusvsSL

Australia on top as Sri Lanka chasing 393 to win in 1st testAustralia lead Sri Lanka by 328 runs heading into the final day of the first Test, setting the tourists a challenging victory target before restricting them to a second-innings 65-2.

Australia captain Michael Clarke helped his side to 278-9 and a target of 393 before Shane Watson and Mitchell Starc removed the Sri Lanka openers before close of play Monday.

Kumar Sangakkara (18) and Mahela Jayawardene (5) were the unbeaten batsmen, intent on staying at the crease rather than scoring. Jayawardene faced 25 balls before his first run.

The highest successful run chase in 10 previous Tests at Hobart was Australia’s 369-6 against Pakistan in 1999. Sri Lanka has never won in Australia and has never successfully chased more than 352.

Clarke retired with a right hamstring injury and Cricket Australia said he will be evaluated by medical staff, but the skipper led his team onto the field for the start of Sri Lanka’s second innings after tea, taking a fielding position at first slip.

The fifth-day pitch at Bellerive Oval should firmly favor the home bowlers, who have already extracted plenty of movement and seen the ball stay low. Sangakkara in particular was fortunate to see a low-bouncing delivery from Watson that entirely beat him miss his stumps.

Watson snared Dilshan, who scored a crucial first-innings century to keep Sri Lanka in the match, for just 11 with his first ball — finding an outside edge that went to Matthew Wade behind the stumps.

It was 47-2 when Starc beat Karunaratne with a perfect Yorker, just as he bowled Dilshan in the first innings.

The pace then slowed to a crawl as the experienced Sangakkara and captain Jayawardene added just 18 runs in the remaining 13.5 overs before stumps.

The imposing target was set up by a pair of crucial partnerships in the Australia batting lineup. Openers David Warner and Ed Cowan resumed the day at 27-0 and took the score to 132-0 before Warner became the first of Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath’s five victims, caught behind for 68.

Cowan departed for 56 soon after with the run rate dropping as three middle-order wickets fell for 35 runs after lunch.

Clarke and Mike Hussey picked up the pace with an aggressive 57 runs from 56 balls, Clarke making 57 from 46 balls before retiring hurt.

Hussey enjoyed a 38-ball 31 before running out of partners at the other end.

Herath finished with figures of 5-96 to move ahead of England’s Graeme Swann as test cricket’s leading wicket taker for 2012. Herath has needed just nine tests for his 60 wickets, three fewer than Swann has played.

Sri Lanka must now hit its highest ever winning total if it is to record a first win from 11 attempts on Australian soil. The West Indies made the highest successful run chase against Australia with 417-8 at St. John’s in 2003.

Jonathon Trott, Ian Bell takes England closer to historic win over India #IndvsEng

Jonathon Trott, Ian Bell takes England closer to historic win in IndiaEngland inched closer to securing their first Test series victory on Indian soil in 28 years by reaching 240/3 in their second essay before lunch as the fourth and final Test dragged towards a tame draw in west India on Monday.

At lunch, the visitors had advanced from their overnight second innings score of 161 for 3 to take an overall lead of 244 over the home side. The English lead India 2-1.

Jonathan Trott was unconquered on 106, his eighth 100 in 38 Tests and first of the current series, after commencing the day at 66 while Ian Bell was not out on a fluent 61, his second half century in India.

Trott has played for five hours, faced 248 balls and hit 14 fours, while Bell has batted for 213 minutes, struck 10 fours in 160 balls and the duo has added 146 runs for the unfinished fourth wicket off 329 balls.

With only two more sessions left to bring down curtains on the rubber and the visiting team batsmen hardly troubled by the toothless Indian attack on a slow pitch, England were almost past the finish line to win their first series in India since the 1984-85 triumph by David Gower’s men.

Incidentally, just like Alastair Cook and his men have done in this rubber, Gower’s outfit too rebounded after losing the opening Test. In the current rubber, England lost the Ahmedabad Test before bouncing back to square the series at Mumbai and then clinch an unassailable 2-1 lead at Kolkata in east India.

When play started on Monday morning, England stuck firmly to the task of batting India out of the game on the final day of the series and clinch the four-match rubber.

The visitors, in contrast to the run-crawl on Sunday, were a lot more positive in their approach with Ian Bell, in particular, playing some superb carpet drives and a glorious pull shot off Ishant Sharma on the wicket of low bounce.

He was the more aggressive partner Monday morning in his fourth-wicket century stand with the 31-year-old South Africa-born Trott that was raised when Bell off-drove R Ashwin fluently to the rope.

Trott, unbeaten on 66 last evening, was also intent in looking out for runs as the 100-run stand came up in 137 minutes and 220 balls before the 200 of the innings was reached 50 minutes into the day’s play in the 94th over.

The first hour of play produced 45 runs in 18 overs as the two batsmen looked absolutely at ease against all the home team bowlers.

Bell on-drove Ashwin to reach his 35th Test 50 in 177 minutes and 130 balls that included nine fluently hit fours and then crossed his previous best score in the country, 57, at Mohali six years ago.

Trott, who had survived a confident appeal from the Indians for a catch at the wicket off Ishant Sharma yesterday when on 43, sauntered to his 100 with an on-driven 13th four off Piyush Chawla. It came in 278 minutes and of 232 balls.

The tourists added 79 runs in 31 overs before lunch to virtually seal any chances of India securing a dramatic victory on the last day.

Senior India batsman Sachin Tendulkar was off the field in the second hour of play and Ashok Dinda fielded for him.
